Nokia Shifting Device Assembly to Asia

In order to increase the Nokia’s competitiveness in the mobile device market, they have announced to transfer production to factories in Asia. About 4,000 jobs from its factories in Hungary, Mexico, and Finland will be cut through the end of 2012.

Nokia Closes Romanian Factory Early, Employees Receive Nokia 500

About 1,830 employees in Nokia’s Romanian production unit will be laid off by the end of November, a month earlier than planned, due to lack of orders. This is part of the Finnish company’s attempt to reduce costs and streamline the workforce. A parting gift includes a Nokia 500 phone.

Nokia Contractor to Replace Workers With 1 Million Robots

Foxconn, the Taiwanese contract manufacturer for a number of well-known companies including Nokia, is hiring 1 million robots in 3 years to cut labor expenses and increase efficiency. They currently have 10,000 robots and the total number will jump to 300,000 next year. Foxconn currently employs 1.2 million human workers, some of whom will be replaced by the robots.

Fire at Nokia’s Paint Unit in Chennai

A major fire broke out at one of Nokia’s factories in Chennai. The fire started from the paint unit according to the Economic Times. Fortunately, there were no reports of any casualties and that the situation was under control. We don’t know if this will cause delays in production, but the factory exports to more than 50 countries in South East Asia, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
