GPS Lock Taking Too Long? Try Google Location Server supl.google.com

post thumbnail

If you’re waiting too long for a GPS lock, try the location server supl.google.com instead. When I was using the Nokia N900 in Amsterdam, I was able to geotag photos in seconds. I became very suspicious when I came back in the US and it took much longer. I shrugged it off until a tip from the Maemo community suggested to replace Nokia’s location server with Google. I’m happy to report that I now get a GPS lock in seconds!

Why I Don’t Like Nokia’s Friend View

I already have Twitter, Jaiku, and Facebook. So why should I use Nokia’s Friend View? According to Nokia’s overview, it is a location and micro-blogging service that helps you stay in touch with your close friends. My problem with that is that my most of close friends don’t have Nokia handsets.

Tip: Search on Google Maps Then Navigate on Nokia Maps

I get frustrated whenever Nokia Maps cannot find places I search for. I end up opening Google Maps instead which finds them every time, but it doesn’t have turn-by-turn voice navigation that I want from Nokia Maps. I’m glad that the two apps share bookmarks or favorite places to fix that problem.

Nokia E71 Manual Gives Bad Shortcuts For Nokia Maps

I was confused with what button shortcuts to press on the Nokia E71 to center in my location and zooming. On phones with numeric keypads like the Nokia N95 8GB or the Nokia N82, 0 is for centering, while * (asterisk) and # (pound sign) are for zooming. The Nokia E71 manual also says the same thing. However, there are quicker ways to get the same results and these should have been mentioned on the booklet instead.

How To: Send Google Earth Location From Computer To Nokia Maps On Phone

I’ll show you how to get info from Google Earth to Nokia Maps. Part of the reason I needed to do this was finding tickets hidden by Nine Inch Nails around Los Angeles. Read more for the guide and backstory.

How To: Send Locations From Google Maps on Computer To Nokia Maps On Phone

Hiking Breakneck Ridge With Nokia N82 and Sports Tracker

Today I went hiking with Sheila at Breakneck Ridge which is about an hour north of New York City. I brought along the Nokia N82 to record our hike with Sports Tracker and take pictures with the 5 megapixel camera. I was really glad I had the Nokia N82 because the ‘shortcut’ we took led us to a poorly marked trail and an omfg snake. Read on for more details.

Hiking Mt. Beacon with Nokia N95 8GB and Sports Tracker

This past weekend, my hiking class went up Mt. Beacon and I had my Nokia N95 8GB with Sports Tracker to track the hike. We were scheduled to go up on Breakneck Ridge but the instructor told us the the trails might be slippery that day. I absolutely hated this Mt. Beacon because the flies rained on us all the way to the top. Check out the embedded map and the data provided by Sports Tracker.

Using GPS and Nokia Maps 2.0 on Nokia N95 8GB to Find My Parking Spot

I just started using Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta on the Nokia N95 8GB to remember my spot via GPS and help me find my car in case I forget. What sucks about living near two big hospitals is that it is really hard to find parking during the day. It’s not a problem at night, but I often have to park 5-6 blocks away if I get home early.

Hiking Week 2: Just A Walk Around the Lake

Last week, I told you that I’m taking a hiking class and I was really looking forward to this week’s hike to Bear Mountain which was supposed to be 5 miles and 1,000 feet vertical rise. Due to weather, the instructor told us it would not be safe and had an alternate hike, instead. Nevertheless, I had the Nokia N95 8GB running Sports Tracker to show you my walk.
