<p>Facebook (FB) announced on Wednesday that they&#8217;ve made <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=297991732130">FB chat available everywhere</a> using the Jabber technology, an open messaging protocol supported by most instant messaging (IM) software. Guess what? The <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/11/13/nokia-n900-review/" title="Nokia N900 Review">Nokia N900</a> supported Jabber out of the box since it was launched! I&#8217;ll show you how you can add FB chat on the N900 without the need to install additional app or plugin.<span id="more-4523"></span></p>
<p><strong>Step 1.</strong> On your Nokia N900, go to <em>Settings &#8211; VoIP and IM accounts</em> and click the <em>New</em> button. Select Jabber as the service.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/jabber_nokia_n900.jpg" alt="Jabber Nokia N900" height="269" width="448"></p>
<p><strong>Step 2.</strong> Find your Facebook Chat username on this <a href="http://www.facebook.com/sitetour/chat.php" title="Facebook Chat">link</a> by clicking on one of the clients. You just need to know the Jabber ID and your Facebook password.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/facebook_chat.jpg" alt="Facebook Chat" height="294" width="375"></p>
<p><strong>Step 3.</strong> Type your username and password from step 2, then sign in. You don&#8217;t need to change anything else. </p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/jabber_nokia_n900_1.jpg" alt="Jabber Nokia N900 1" height="269" width="448"></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! You can now chat with your Facebook friends directly from your Contacts book without having to download apps or plugins. You can change your availability status directly from the status area on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>.</p>

<p>I previously shared an easy guide to <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/12/21/video-how-to-install-deb-files-on-nokia-n900/" title="Video How to: Install .deb Files on Nokia N900">install .deb files on the Nokia N900 using Red Pill mode</a>, but that functionality has been removed on the latest firmware updates. Another method to install .deb files requires using X Terminal, but it could be overwhelming at first. I think I understand it better now, so here&#8217;s a guide to help you install those files on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/11/13/nokia-n900-review/" title="Nokia N900 Review">Nokia N900</a>, too.<span id="more-4405"></span></p>
<p>Before you continue, use common sense and only install .deb files from trusted sources! Some developers provide these type of files for users to test their applications. In this guide, coder <em>Chris Burris</em> allowed me to use his upcoming FourSquare app dubbed BarrioSquare as an example. Check out the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/barriosquare">BarrioSquare group page</a> to join the testing.</p>
<h4>The Download</h4>
<p>Let me first show you how I downloaded the .deb files. I simply clicked on the download link from a webpage and the browser asked where I want to save it to. I chose the default, which says, <em>Location: Nokia N900</em>.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_download.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 Download" height="269" width="448"><br />
<em>Browser asks to download the .deb file</em></p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_barriosquare.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 Barriosquare" height="269" width="448"><br />
<em>Browser asks where to save the file</em></p>
<h4>The Installation</h4>
<p>1. First, <a href="http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/rootsh/" title="maemo.org - Downloads: Rootsh">install rootsh</a> to enable root access.</p>
<p>2. Open X Terminal on the Nokia N900, type <em>sudo gainroot</em> and press enter. This will not work if you skipped the first step. </p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_gainroot.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 Gainroot" height="269" width="448"></p>
<p>3. I find it easier to go into the same folder where the .deb is located. The <em>cd TheNameOfDirectoryHere</em> command changes your location to that directory. Therefore, if you downloaded the file in the default folder, type <em>cd MyDocs</em></p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_x_terminal.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 x Terminal" height="269" width="448"></p>
<p>4. Check if the .deb file is in your current folder by typing <em>ls</em>. This command lists the contents of your current folder. You know you&#8217;re in the right folder if you see the .deb file on the list.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_xterminal.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 Xterminal" height="269" width="448"></p>
<p>5. Now that we&#8217;re in the same folder as the .deb file, we can install it using the command <em>dpkg -i TheNameOfFileHere.deb</em></p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_x_term.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 x Term" height="269" width="448"></p>
<p>6. That&#8217;s it! That&#8217;s how you install .deb files on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>. You should also note that some .deb files (like BarrioSquare) will not install without other files preinstalled. These are called dependencies. Read developers&#8217; full instructions to see whether dependencies are needed.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_n900_barriosquare_1.jpg" alt="Nokia N900 BarrioSquare 1" height="269" width="448"></p>

<p>Google announced on Tuesday that they are rolling out the ability to upload and store <a href="http://googledocs.blogspot.com/2010/01/upload-and-store-your-files-in-cloud.html" title="Official Google Docs Blog: Upload and store your files in the cloud with Google Docs">any type of file in Google Docs</a> over the next few weeks. It&#8217;s cool that <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/11/13/nokia-n900-review/" title="Nokia N900 Review">Nokia N900</a> users will be able to take advantage of this service directly from their device by using the Petrovich and Pixelpipe apps.<span id="more-4228"></span></p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/petrovich_nokia_n900.jpg" alt="Petrovich Nokia N900" height="269" width="448"><br />
	<em>Upload files other than pics or vids with Petrovich</em></p>
<p>The Petrovich app on the N900 allows you to send a file of your choosing via Bluetooth, E-mail, or a “Sharing service”. Add Google Docs as one of your <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/03/nokia-n900-demo-pixelpipe/" title="Nokia N900 Pixelpipe">Pixelpipe</a> pipes and you&#8217;ll be able to store any type of files on Google&#8217;s servers.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s break it up in simple steps:</p>
<ul>
<li>Install <a href="http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications/petrovich/" title="Maemo software | Nokia &rsaquo; Petrovich">Petrovich</a></li>
<li>Install <a href="http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications/pixelpipe-media-gateway-for-nokia-share/" title="Maemo software | Nokia &rsaquo; Pixelpipe Media Gateway for Nokia Share">Pixelpipe</a></li>
<li>Add <a href="http://pixelpipe.com/destinations/add" title="Pixelpipe - Sign In">Google Docs</a> to Pixelpipe</li>
<li>Take note of the routing tag. Default is &#8220;@gdocs&#8221;</li>
<li>Open Petrovich on Nokia N900</li>
<li>Select the file you want to upload and choose &#8220;Share via Service&#8221;</li>
<li>Type title or description, then add the &#8220;@gdocs&#8221; tag.</li>
<li>Make sure the account showing is Pixelpipe.</li>
<li>Click Share.</li>
<li>That&#8217;s it!</li>
</ul>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/petrovich_nokia_n900_1.jpg" alt="Petrovich Nokia N900 1" height="269" width="448"><br />
	<em>Nokia N900&#8217;s Share feature makes this possible</em></p>
<p>Google says, &#8220;you&#8217;ll have 1GB of free storage for files you don&#8217;t convert into one of the Google Docs formats (i.e. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations), and if you need more space, you can buy additional storage for $0.25 per GB per year.&#8221; File size limit is 250MB. This feature is not enabled for me yet, but it will be available in the next couple of weeks. Will you be using it with the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>?</p>

<p>Thanks to <a href="http://intr.overt.org/blog/?p=94" title="Wubble : N900 Bluetooth DUN package now in extras repository">Philip Langdale</a>, we can now tether our <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/11/13/nokia-n900-review/" title="Nokia N900 Review">Nokia N900</a> with other devices over bluetooth. He has released the <a href="http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/bluetooth-dun/" title="maemo.org - Downloads: Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking">Bluetooth Dial-Up-Networking (DUN) package</a> that many people have been waiting for. Since I use a Mac, I&#8217;ll share my guide on using the Nokia N900&#8217;s internet connection with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. <span id="more-4129"></span></p>
<p>First, install Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking. This is available in Application manager under the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/27/maemo-extras-nokia-n900-applications/" title="A Guide to Maemo Extras for More Nokia N900 Applications">Extras repository</a> or simply install it from <a href="http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/bluetooth-dun/" title="maemo.org - Downloads: Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking">this page</a>. Reboot the N900 after installation.</p>
<p>Open Network Preferences on the Mac and click on the &#8216;plus&#8217; sign to add a service. Select Bluetooth DUN as the interface, name it whatever you like and click the create button.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/system_1.jpg" alt="System 1" height="445" width="448"></p>
<p>Select the service you just added and click Advanced.. </p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/bluetooth_n_900.jpg" alt="Bluetooth n 900" height="311" width="448"></p>
<p>Under the Modem tab, select Nokia as vendor, and GPRS as the Model. Type in your provider&#8217;s access point network and hit OK then Apply. I use T-mobile in the USA so my APN is internet2.voicestream.com. The Nokia N900 does not show your APN so you might have to call your provider or insert the SIM card into another phone that tells you the APN (S60 phones show it in connection settings).</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_bluetooth_tether.jpg" alt="Nokia Bluetooth Tether" height="253" width="448"></p>
<p>Make sure Bluetooth is ON with the Nokia N900 first. Click on &#8220;Set up Bluetooth Device&#8221; and follow the directions to pair the Mac with the Nokia N900.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nokia_tether_bluetooth.jpg" alt="Nokia Tether Bluetooth" height="291" width="448"></p>
<p>Mac will ask you to confirm if the number displayed is also showing up on the Nokia N900. Click Pair on the Nokia N900 and Continue on the Mac.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/bluetooth_tether_nokia.jpg" alt="Bluetooth Tether Nokia" height="151" width="448"></p>
<p>If the pairing is successful, you will see this screen. I didn&#8217;t have to fill out username or password. Just click Continue.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/bluetooth_tether_nokia_1.jpg" alt="Bluetooth Tether Nokia 1" height="388" width="448"></p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/bluetooth_tether_nokia_2.jpg" alt="Bluetooth Tether Nokia 2" height="203" width="403"></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! To use the internet connection from your <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a> on the Mac, just click on the phone icon on the top right corner and then Connect.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/tether_nokia_n900_bluetooth.jpg" alt="Tether Nokia N900 Bluetooth" height="281" width="396"></p>
<p>I hope this guide helps you out. Let me know if you have any questions setting it up.</p>

That means click, wait for list to load, then another click to go back to the previous page. I don&#8217;t like it. If you feel the same way, a workaround is to press the backspace on the keyboard to load the previous page bypassing the history list. <span id="more-3990"></span> </p>

<p>I don&#8217;t think the history list should appear when pressing the back button on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a> web browser. I recommend making it available as another option like a long-press in Safari, or a drop-down in Firefox. Do you agree?</p>

<h4>Steps</h4>
<p><strong>1.</strong> Install Greasemonkey-webaddon. It&#8217;s currently in the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/27/maemo-extras-nokia-n900-applications/" title="A Guide to Maemo Extras for More Nokia N900 Applications">Extras-Devel repository</a>.</p>
<p><strong>2.</strong> Restart the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>. I&#8217;m not sure if it&#8217;s necessary, but I had to restart my device in order to install the script on the next step.</p>
<p><strong>3.</strong> Install Power Twitter script for Greasemonkey from <a href="http://powertwitter.me/" title="powertwitter.me">powertwitter.me</a>.</p>
<p><strong>4.</strong> Open <a href="http://twitter.com/" title="Twitter">twitter.com</a> with the Nokia N900&#8217;s browser. There should now be a link to the Power Twitter settings on the lower right corner. Login with your Twitter account and check/uncheck options based on your preference.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/powertwitter.jpg" alt="Powertwitter" height="279" width="448"></p>
<p><strong>5.</strong> That&#8217;s it! Thanks to Alan &#8220;Qole&#8221; Bruce for the tip.</p>

<p>Lately, I&#8217;ve been using <a href="http://posterous.com/" title="Posterous - The place to post everything. Just email us. Dead simple blog by email.">Posterous</a> to post photos and non-Nokia related articles on my personal site. I&#8217;m really liking how it works with the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/06/23/nokia-n97-review-hardware/" title="Nokia N97 Review of Hardware">Nokia N97</a> and the <a href="http://email.nokia.com/" title="Nokia Messaging: Home">Nokia Messaging app</a>. Combined together, they make a great mobile blogging tool.<span id="more-3577"></span></p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/posterous.jpg" alt="Posterous" height="214" width="448" /></p>
<p>In short, Posterous lets you write blog posts by simply writing an email to post@posterous.com. You can set it up to autopost your entries to your other existing online presence like Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and even another blog.</p>
<h4>Multiple Photos</h4>
<p>My favorite feature is how Posterous handles multiple photos. Just attach several photos in the email, and they will automatically create an embedded photo gallery within the post. When it comes to <a href="http://twitter.com/thenokiablog/" title="">Twitter</a>, it&#8217;s great to automatically share photos you&#8217;ve taken, but will your followers like it if you tweeted 10 related photos in a row? Probably not. Posterous auto-tweets one time with a link showing the gallery of the multiple photos. I think this is the best way to share multiple photos on Twitter! Here&#8217;s a <a href="http://twitter.com/thenokiablog/statuses/4550566501" title="">sample tweet</a> for <a href="http://markguim.posterous.com/got-an-awesome-new-tripod" title="Got an awesome new tripod - Mark Guim">this post</a>.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/multiple_photos.jpg" alt="Multiple photos" height="317" width="448" /><br />
	<em>Auto photo gallery by Posterous</em></p>
<h4>Autoposting</h4>
<p>Another great feature of Posterous is autoposting to other services like Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, or other blogs. Posterous takes it to another level by enabling you to autopost to only some of those services with each post. You can select which of those services to post by simply changing the email address.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/auto_post_to_everywhere_posterous.jpg" alt="Auto Post to Everywhere Posterous" height="205" width="328"/></p>
<h4>Integration with Nokia Messaging</h4>
<p>Since Posterous works via email, I like how it integrates with the <a href="http://email.nokia.com">Nokia Messaging</a> app. On the gallery, you can select the photos to upload, then click on the Nokia Messaging option. If you don&#8217;t want photos on the post, just write an email without any attachments.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/gallery.jpg" alt="Gallery" height="373" width="210"/> <img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/nokia_messaging.jpg" alt="Nokia Messaging" height="373" width="210"/> <img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/nokia_messaging_1.jpg" alt="Nokia Messaging 1" height="373" width="210"/></p>
<h4>Finishing Thoughts</h4>
<p>I suggest trying out Posterous if you haven&#8217;t yet. You won&#8217;t regret it. It definitely makes our Nokia phones even more powerful. This is perfect for mobile blogging as well as instant sharing of photos. I love it on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n97-white/" title="">Nokia N97</a> because of the Qwerty keypad for quick typing. I can&#8217;t wait to try it out on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n900/" title="">Nokia N900</a>.</p>

<p><a href="http://labs.boingo.com/blog/?p=310" title="boingo labs blog &raquo; Blog Archive &raquo; Boingo IAP Remover for Nokia N97">Boingo released a patch</a> that will let users remove their access point from the Destinations folder. You may already know that <a href="http://www.boingo.com/" title="Boingo Wireless | Wireless Internet. Wi-Fi Access. One Click Log On">Boingo</a> lets you access wifi hotspots around the world at an affordable price. One problem with the application is that it adds access points in the Destination folder that can&#8217;t be removed if you no longer want to use the service. Here&#8217;s how to fix it.<span id="more-3022"></span></p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/boingo_remover.jpg" alt="Boingo Remover" height="308" width="448"></p>
<p>The <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/06/23/nokia-n97-review-hardware/" title="Nokia N97 Review of Hardware">Nokia N97</a> comes pre-loaded with three months of free Boingo Wi-Fi. If you were curious what the app does and decided to open it, Boingo automatically adds an Access Point to your destinations. If you choose not to activate the service, the app or access point shouldn&#8217;t affect your other connections. However, there are people (like me) who rather not have it there if I don&#8217;t use it.</p>
<ul>
<li>From the main menu on your device, select Settings>Connectivity>Destinations>Internet and confirm that Boingo is listed as an access point.</li>
<li>Download the <a href="http://labs.boingo.com/wp-uploads/2009/08/boingoiapremover-n97-v1-02_signed.sis" title="">Boingo patch software</a> to your device.</li>
<li>As soon as the installation is complete, the patch software automatically launches and removes the Boingo IAP.</li>
<li>You will see a confirmation message that the Boingo IAP is being removed.</li>
<li>To check that the Boingo IAP has been removed, navigate again to the Destinations menu.</li>
</ul>
<p>I tried this out myself and can confirm that it works.</p>

<p>My latest discovery on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/06/23/nokia-n97-review-hardware/" title="Nokia N97 Review of Hardware">Nokia N97</a>, which probably works on other S60 devices, is timed profiles. I totally didn&#8217;t know this feature existed until yesterday. Timed profiles lets you set a profile (General, Silent, Office, etc) until a certain time. When the time is reached, it goes back to the previous profile.<span id="more-2853"></span></p>
<h4>Setup</h4>
<p>I usually change profiles by pressing the power button on top of the phone and never see the timed option. It is available through its option panel. Look for Profiles on your phone. On the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-n97-white/" title="Nokia N97 Unlocked Phone">Nokia N97</a>, it is under settings &#8211; Profiles. </p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/nokia_n97_timed_2.jpg" alt="Nokia n97 Timed 2" height="310" width="175" /> <img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/nokia_n97_set_time.jpg" alt="Nokia n97 set Time" height="310" width="175"/></p>
<p>When you click on a profile, you are asked to activate, personalize, or have it timed. That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re looking for. Enter the time you want and press OK. You&#8217;re all set. The phone will automatically revert to the previous profile when the time is reached.</p>
<p><strong>Reasons.</strong> I can think of a couple of situations that make this handy.</p>
<ul>
<li>Put the phone on silent while I&#8217;m sleeping so I don&#8217;t hear calls or email alerts.</li>
<li>Put the phone on offline mode when I&#8217;m sleeping so I save battery.</li>
</ul>
<p>Let me know if you use timed profiles and how you incorporate it with your schedule.</p>

<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/nokia-n97-fcc-photos.jpg" alt="Nokia n97 fcc Photos" height="296" width="448"><br />
	<em><a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/17/hands-on-with-the-nokia-n97-and-nokia-e75/" title="Hands-On With The Nokia N97 and Nokia E75 | The Nokia Blog">Nokia N97</a> found on the FCC early May</em></p>
<h4>Steps</h4>
<p>Go to the FCC database search accessible by <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/fcc/">thenokiablog.com/go/fcc/</a></p>
<p>Enter <em>Nokia</em> as the applicant name, type a desired <em>Grant Date</em> range, then hit search.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/fcc-oet-generic-search-report.jpg" alt="FCC OET Generic Search Report.jpg" border="0" width="448" height="135" /></p>
<p>On the search results, click on <em>Grant date</em> column to sort the results from most recent to later.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/oet-search-results1.jpg" alt="Oet Search Results1" height="312" width="195"></p>
<p>Under <em>Display Exhibit</em> column, take a look at each of the <em>Detail</em> links. <em>Test reports</em> usually hints at some technical specs of the device, while the <em>external photos</em> show&#8230; photos. </p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/oet-list-exhibits-report1.jpg" alt="Oet List Exhibits Report1" height="174" width="448"></p>
<h4>The Hunt</h4>
<p>Finding Nokia devices on the FCC site usually mean they are about to be available in stores within weeks. Be the first to publish this information, and expect a surge of traffic to your site if the big sites like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/" title="Engadget">Engadget</a> or <a href="http://gizmodo.com/" title="Gizmodo, the Gadget Guide">Gizmodo</a> decide to link back to you.</p>
<p>Found anything interesting today?</p>

<p>We will be using Google to find these photos. It&#8217;s simple. Ready? Just search this:</p>

<li><a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=site:flickr.com+%22Taken+with+a+Nokia+N97%22" title="Search for Nokia N97 photos">site:flickr.com &#8220;Taken with a Nokia N97&#8243;</a></li>
</ul>
<p>You can replace the device to whatever upcoming phone you want to check out and you might get lucky.</p>
<p>When you are at a photo page, scroll down and look for the camera information on the right column. It looks like this:</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/nokia-n97-flickr.jpg" alt="Nokia N97 Flickr.jpg" border="0" width="277" height="150" /></p>
<p>Some photos show up as being &#8220;taken with a Nokia&#8221; without a model number or name. I suspect those are very early prototypes. Let us know if you find anything interesting!</p>

<p>Want to change how your <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/07/22/nokia-e71-review-part-i-the-physical/" title="Nokia E71 review">Nokia E71</a> looks? Why not try a different colored keypad or faceplate? Here are photos and instructions which show you how you can do it yourself. Even though it&#8217;s simple, I have to warn you to only try this if you are prepared to risk ending up with a broken phone. <span id="more-2369"></span></p>
<p>For the extra faceplates and spare parts, many people seem to like <a href="http://cnn.cn/shop/nokia-e71-c-24_571.html" title="Nokia E71 Replacement faceplate">CNN.CN</a>. They include the Nokia E71&#8217;s faceplate, bottom cover and even a whole body replacement. The instructions below will show you how to remove just the faceplate and bottom cover.</p>
<p>I purposely omit the instructions that will enable you disassemble the phone further because the photos just look plain scary. </p>
<h4>Steps</h4>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/battery-cover.jpg" alt="battery cover.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Release battery cover.</p>

Remove battery cover.</p>

Unscrew four T4+ screws.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/open-the-two-clips.jpg" alt="Open the two clips.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Open the two clips.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/do-the-same-other-side.jpg" alt="do the same other side.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Do the same on the other side.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/lift-the-bottom-cover.jpg" alt="Lift the bottom cover.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Lift the bottom of top cover NOT the bottom cover!</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/remove-top-cover-as-shown.jpg" alt="Remove top cover as shown.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Remove the top cover as shown.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/press-out-the-qwerty.jpg" alt="Press out the Qwerty.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Press out the qwerty keypad.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/remove-bottom-cover.jpg" alt="Remove bottom cover.jpg" border="0" width="420" height="336" /><br />
Remove bottom cover.</p>
<h4>Result</h4>
<p>That&#8217;s it! Here&#8217;s a sample result from <a href="http://howardforums.com/" title="Howard Forums">HoFo</a> member <em>rapidstar</em> who replaced the keypad on his Grey Nokia E71 to white.</p>

<h4>Trying it?</h4>
<p>So now that you know how to do it&#8230; are you willing to open up your <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-e71/" title="Nokia E71">Nokia E71</a> to change its looks?</p>

<p>I&#8217;ll show you how I&#8217;ve been converting videos from my Mac, transfer, and watch on my phone without having to learn anything about codecs, bitrates, resolutions, and other tech terms we really shouldn&#8217;t care about. This is all possible thanks to <a href="http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/nokia-multimedia-transfer">Nokia Multimedia Transfer</a> for Mac.<span id="more-2312"></span></p>
<p>Using Nokia Multimedia Transfer software is pretty straightforward. For video transfers, you&#8217;ll also need to use iTunes as a milddleman to hold your unconverted movies or videos.</p>
<h4>Setup</h4>
<p><strong>Download.</strong> Head to <a href="http://nokia.com/mac">nokia.com/mac</a> to download Multimedia Transfer. Install it, then add your Nokia device.</p>
<p><strong>Prepare iTunes.</strong> Create a new playlist on iTunes to help you better organize the movies or videos you want to transfer over to the phone. Drag all the videos you want on your phone to this playlist.</p>
<h4>Multimedia Transfer Settings</h4>
<p>Under Device settings on Multimedia Transfer, <em>enable iTunes Transfer for selected folders &#038; playlist</em> and check the created playlist from the previous step.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/nokia-5800-settings.jpg" alt="Nokia 5800 settings.jpg" border="0" width="433" height="438" /></p>
<p>On the video tab, select <em>Transcode videos not natively supported by device</em>.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/nokia-5800-video-settings.jpg" alt="Nokia 5800 Video settings.jpg" border="0" width="448" height="379" /></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! Now all you need to do is start the transfer, or even turn on the option that automatically transfers the videos when you plug in your phone to your Mac. </p>
<p>If you have new videos to add later on, just drag them to the playlist on iTunes, then click transfer on Multimedia Transfer after connecting your phone.</p>
<p>As an example, I had a 350MB HD video that was converted into a 27MB file playable on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-5800/" title="Nokia 5800">Nokia 5800</a>. I did not have to find out about conversion settings or codecs, etc. Very simple!</p>

		</div>
<p>If you like uploading your photos and videos online before you even get home, you need to check out <a href="http://pixelpipe.com/" title="Pixelpipe">Pixelpipe</a>. I&#8217;ve talked about <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/tag/shozu/" title="Shozu Tag">Shozu</a> and <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/04/10/how-to-send-photos-videos-to-fb-twitter-flickr-etc-using-share-online-with-mobypicture/" title="Mobypictures">Mobypictures</a> before, but Pixelpipe really stands out as the winner. Not only does it work with Nokia&#8217;s own Share Online, but the also provide a lot of places you can simultaneously upload to. Now there&#8217;s no reason for me NOT to upload to <a href="http://share.ovi.com/" title="Ovi Share">Ovi Share</a>.<span id="more-2283"></span></p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/my-pixelpipe-destinations.jpg" alt="My pixelpipe destinations.jpg" border="0" width="448" height="145" /><br />
<em>My Pixelpipe pipes</em></p>
<h4>Usage</h4>
<p><strong>To setup:</strong> Go to pixelpipe.com/nokia from your handset to get your Share Online client configured.<br />
<strong>To use:</strong> In the Gallery with a photo selected (or mark multiple) choose ‘Options>Send>Post to web’. You can also select the &#8216;Post to…&#8217; icon to upload immediately after taking a photo.</p>
<h4>Pipes or Destinations</h4>
<p>You can choose from a lot of services you can upload your photos and videos. Take a look at this screenshot below.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/pixelpipe-services.jpg" alt="Pixelpipe services.jpg" border="0" width="325" height="1075" /></p>
<p><strong>Routing tags.</strong> Another cool thing about Pixelpipe is the use of on-demand filters. For example, if you signed up for 10 destinations, you can still upload a photo to certain services at specific momenst. You can set a <a href="http://pixelpipe.com/destinations" title="PixelPipe settings">&#8216;routing tag&#8217; for each service</a> and simply type these tags on the title before you you upload. If I want to upload my photo to Facebook and Flicker only, I&#8217;ll type &#8220;@fb @fl Photo Title Here,&#8221; so it will only upload to those two instead of all default destinations. </p>
<h4>Thoughts</h4>
<p><a href="http://pixelpipe.com">Pixelpipe</a> is really a must-have for anyone with Nokia device. Since it is patched with Share Online, there&#8217;s no need to install third-party apps that runs in the background like Shozu.</p>
<p>Pixelpipe is also similar to <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/04/10/how-to-send-photos-videos-to-fb-twitter-flickr-etc-using-share-online-with-mobypicture/">Mobypictures</a> that I previously liked, but it proves to be a lot better. The amount of destinations is a lot more to choose from. I can&#8217;t think of any negative things about Pixelpipe. You should go ahead and set it up on your phone!</p>

I like Shozu because of the one-click upload, but some people might like MobyPicture better. Moby is patched into Nokia Share Online so you can upload photos and videos to social media locations like Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter without a third-party app like Shozu running in the background.

Setup

<p>I like Shozu because of the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/15/how-to-share-live-photos-twitter-facebook/" title="Vlog: How To Share Live Photos With Twitter and Facebook | The Nokia Blog">one-click upload</a>, but some people might like <a href="http://www.mobypicture.com/" title="Mobypicture - Share your adventures with your friends realtime">MobyPicture</a> better. Moby is patched into Nokia Share Online so you can upload photos and videos to social media locations like Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter without a third-party app like Shozu running in the background.<span id="more-2252"></span></p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/moby-loves-nokia.jpg" alt="Moby Loves Nokia" height="294" width="354"/></p>
<h4>Setup</h4>
<p>First, register a free account at Mobypicture. You can just use your Twitter credentials, but remember the PIN number that appears on your <a href="http://www.mobypicture.com/account" title="Mobypicture - Share your adventures with your friends realtime">account page</a>.</p>
<p>Point your phone to <a href="http://mobypicture.com/?nso" title="Mobypicture.com">http://mobypicture.com/?nso</a></p>
<p>You will be asked to download a configuration file for Share Online. Save it to your phone and open it.</p>
<p>After Mobypicture has been added as a provider in Share Online, you need to enter your username and PIN.</p>
<p>You might also want to check the settings to upload the original size for better quality.</p>
<p class="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mackarus/3429617948/" title="mobypicture (1 of 1) by mackarus, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3374/3429617948_e5b3dfd634.jpg" width="448" alt="mobypicture (1 of 1)" /></a><br />
	<em>Mobypicture on the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/go/nokia-5800/" title="Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Unlocked Cell Phone">Nokia 5800</a> using Share Online</em></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! After taking the picture, you can click Send &#8211; Upload or Post to web (depending on which Nokia you&#8217;re using), select Mobypicture, then give it a title before uploading.</p>
<h4>Thoughts</h4>
<p>Shozu is still the faster way if you want to immediately tweet and send photos online because of the one-click feature, but Mobypicture is a nice alternative. There&#8217;s no app running in the background that uses up RAM or battery. </p>
<p><strong>The Good</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>No app running in the background.</li>
<li>Built-in with Nokia Share online.</li>
<li>Nice mobile site.</li>
<li>Shows links to all the other destinations the photo/video was uploaded to.</li>
<li>Option to update Facebook status with the photo.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>The Bad</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>More clicks than Shozu</li>
<li>The URL&#8217;s posted on Twitter are too long</li>
</ul>

			</a>
		</div>
<p>I previously talked about using <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/29/review-spinvox-read-my-voicemail/" title="Review: Spinvox Lets Me Read My Voicemail | The Nokia Blog">SpinVox to read my voicemails</a>, but since I use a lot of Google&#8217;s products anyway, why not try the new <a href="https://www.google.com/voice/">Google Voice</a> as well? Its main purpose is one new number will ring all your phones at home, office, etc. However, I don&#8217;t want to give my friends a new number and I already carry my Nokia phone everywhere. I just want to use the voicemail-to-text service. I&#8217;ll show you how to set it up.<span id="more-2245"></span></p>
<p>I&#8217;ll assume you already have a free Google Voice account. If not, <a href="https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/">sign up</a> for an invitation.</p>
<p><strong>Step 1.</strong> From your browser, go to Google Voice settings, change to <em>Display my Google Voice number</em>, and check <em>Do not Disturb</em>. Take a look at the screenshot below for visual aid.</p>
<p><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/google-voice-inbox.jpg" alt="Google Voice Inbox" height="208" width="448"/></p>
<p><strong>Step 2.</strong> From your phone settings, Call forwarding &#8211; Voice calls:<br />
Change <em>If busy</em>, <em>If not answered</em>, <em>If out of reach</em>, and <em>If not available</em> to your new Google Voice number. It might ask for the amount of time you want the phone to ring before heading to voicemail. I chose 20 seconds.</p>
<p class="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mackarus/3425042832/" title="call forward (1 of 1) by mackarus, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3313/3425042832_439bcbfa75.jpg" width="448" alt="call forward (1 of 1)" /></a><br />
	<em>Call forwarding settings on <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/19/nokia-5800-review-of-hardware/" title="Nokia 5800 Review of Hardware | The Nokia Blog">Nokia 5800</a></em></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! Your callers will now be forwarded to Google Voice for voicemail if you don&#8217;t pick up or not available. You will receive transcripts of the voicemails in your email as well as given a link to listen. You can also listen the old fashion way by dialing the Google Voice number from your phone.</p>
<h4>Thoughts</h4>
<p>Google Voice needs to improve its transcription technology because it&#8217;s not very accurate. SpinVox does a better job at transcribing more accurately. On the plus side, the Google Voice website provides a familiar interface similar to Gmail which I really like. </p>
<p>What do you feel about voicemail-to-text services? Would you (or already) use voicemail transcribing from Spinvox or Google Voice?</p>

<p>If you find files you want to install on your Nokia phone with the word &#8220;unsigned,&#8221; then you might want to read this. Here are sets of instructions to get a developer&#8217;s certificate to sign the unsigned apps and install on your Nokia S60 phone.<span id="more-2229"></span></p>
<p>1. <a href="http://www.opda.net.cn/register.php">Register</a> an account at OPDA. It&#8217;s in Chinese, but check the photo below to make it easier for you.<br />
<img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/register.jpg" alt="Register" height="477" width="408"/><br />
2. Apply for certificate <a href="http://www.opda.net.cn/plugin.php?identifier=cert&#038;module=cert&#038;action=apply">here</a>.<br />
<img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/imei.jpg" alt="Imei" height="182" width="439"/><br />
3. Enter your IMEI in the first form. You can get this by entering *#06# into your phone.<br />
4. On the second box, enter last 9 numbers of your mobile number and place 13, 15 or 18 before them. EXAMPLE: If your phone number is +44 20 12345678, then you type 18012345678.<br />
5. Press the submit button.<br />
6. After a few hours, check the <a href="http://www.opda.net.cn/plugin.php?identifier=cert&#038;module=cert&#038;action=my">My Certificates section</a> for the cer and key files. You will need both to sign your apps.<br />
<img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/cer-and-key.jpg" alt="Cer and key" height="181" width="438"/><br />
7. Use <a href="http://www.gosymbian.com/SSIS_download.html" title="FExplorer - Download">SignSIS</a> to sign the unsigned app using the Certificate and key files you just downloaded. You don&#8217;t need to enter anything for the key box.<br />
<img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/signsis.jpg" alt="Signsis" height="381" width="300"/><br />
8. That&#8217;s it! Your app is now signed and can be installed. From now on, you only need to do step 7 when you find more unsigned apps.</p>
<h4>How About You?</h4>
<p>Is this how you sign your apps? Know a better method?</p>

<p>Sharing live photos is one of <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2009/03/08/top-5-things-use-my-nokia-n85/">the top 5 things I do</a> with my <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/11/12/nokia-n85-review-part-1-the-physical/" title="Nokia N85 Review - Part 1 The Physical | The Nokia Blog">Nokia N85</a>. Some readers asked how it&#8217;s done so I&#8217;ll show you how to set it up. The main application that deserves the spotlight is <a href="http://www.shozu.com/" title="">Shozu</a>. Continue reading for the guide.<span id="more-2070"></span></p>
<p>Watch the video below for the guide. The great thing about videos is that you can pause and rewind to repeat an instruction. Head to the blog if it&#8217;s not visible in your RSS reader.</p>
<p><object width= "448" height="277"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Vq5Dtl5hhB4&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Vq5Dtl5hhB4&#038;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&#038;autoplay=0&#038;rel=0&#038;fs=1&#038;color1=0x3a3a3a&#038;color2=0x999999&#038;border=0&#038;loop=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="448" height="277"></embed></object></p>
<p><strong>Step 1.</strong> First, you&#8217;ll need to install Shozu on your Nokia phone. It&#8217;s free to download and accessible directly from your phone at <a href="http://m.shozu.com/">m.shozu.com</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2.</strong> Open up Shozu, click &#8220;Add sites,&#8221; then select Twitpic.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3.</strong> Enter your Twitpic unique email address. You can find this by logging on to <a href="http://twitpic.com/" title="TwitPic / Share photos on Twitter">Twitpic.com</a> with your Twitter credentials then going to <a href="http://twitpic.com/settings.do" title="TwitPic Settings">settings</a>. Twitpic will then be on the site list after saving.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4.</strong> Set Twitpic as the photo 1-click site. If it&#8217;s the only site on your list, you don&#8217;t need to do anything for this step. You can confirm by checking if there&#8217;s a number 1 on the right of Twitpic.</p>
<p><strong>Step 5.</strong> Under &#8220;send settings,&#8221; select &#8220;ask before sending&#8221; for photos. </p>
<p><strong>Step 6.</strong> You need to run in the background. You can set that under Advanced settings.</p>
<p><em>Optional Step 7.</em> At this point, you&#8217;re done if you just want to post live photos to Twitter. However, some of you would also like to send the same photos to Facebook or other services automatically. Go to the Shozu site on your computer and <a href="http://www.shozu.com/portal/selfprovisioning.do?operation=select&amp;type=cc_dest_type" title="ShoZu">add a CC site</a>. Now, whatever photos you send to Twitter also get sent to the additional sites of your choosing.</p>

<p>I live in Bogotá, Colombia, and the traffic is just insane. Usually most of the time the best way to go around for small trips is using a bicycle, which has been my ride for <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=_t&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;u=http%3A%2F%2Fpatton.blogdeldia.com%2Fitem%2F13&#038;sl=es&#038;tl=en">15 years now</a>. It was frustrating not being able to follow my trip on <a href="http://sportstracker.nokia.com/" title="">Sportstracker</a>, until I read about a <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/12/03/nokia-sports-tracker-bike-cradle">cradle ideal for sportstracker</a> here on The Nokia Blog. It was exactly what I needed but according to Mark, it was a prototype and no one knows if it will hit the streets someday. Therefore, I made my own one with the materials I found handy. <span id="more-1668"></span></p>
<h4>Ingredients:</h4>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3102810241/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3124/3102810241_99e83fbc62.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
	A cheap rear light support. (US$1, with rear safety light)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3102811735/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3113/3102811735_6a2aa09824.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
An old cyclocomputer bracket. I was very lucky: light support fits like a glove on this bracket.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3102812097/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/3102812097_8ee2777809.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="200" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3102814269/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3160/3102814269_b30208bdfb.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="200" /></a><br />
	An old inner tube. Just cut a 8&#8243; x 0.5&#8243; strip. Usually you can find this for free. </p>
<h4>Instructions</h4>
<p><strong>Step 1</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3103644162/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3081/3103644162_bc65e906c4.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
Glue rubber strip to metalic support. Reason for this is to avoid scratches due to vibration on your valuable Nok and also help to increase friction so it won&#8217;t fall. The press is just glue rubber to tin.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3103646108/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3113/3103646108_4e9bac4853.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
Install cyclocomputer bracket the way it&#8217;s supposed to. Don&#8217;t forget to put the rubber strip below it and fasten it very tight. This is important. </p>
<p><strong>Step 3</strong><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3103647902/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3264/3103647902_e5344a1e51.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
Insert metalic piece into plastic bracket. I want it to be removable, so I just insert it when I&#8217;m going to use sportstracker. </p>
<p><strong>Step 4</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3102818193/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3004/3102818193_c8f9107442.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
Secure your Nok with the rubber strip using a double knot. Try not to press camera and gallery keys on the right side, with some practice you&#8217;ll do it without thinking. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pattoncito/3103649846/in/set-72157611113948159/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3181/3103649846_a83403c11b.jpg?v=0" alt="" width="420" /></a><br />
And you&#8217;re ready to go. In this case I&#8217;m using Garmin Mobile XT to make my route.</p>
<p>To be honest, it&#8217;s really useful and secure. It also helps to keep keyboard open, as you may know GPS receiver is under it and it helps a lot to get a good satellite signal all time. </p>
<h4>Video</h4>
<p><embed src="http://share.ovi.com/flash/player.aspx?media=Patton.10166&#038;channelname=patton.Fusionistas" width="448" height="336" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></p>
<p>In this video, you can see the cradle in action. As you can see, it is stiff and almost immune to vibration. You can also see Sportstracker data live the way it should be, and also helpful with the Nokia or Google Maps apps. Of course, use your common sense and brains while using it. Like any cyclocomputer: don&#8217;t put all your attention on it all the time. I wouldn&#8217;t go to high crime rate areas or in a downhill competition, but it&#8217;s up to you anyway. </p>
<p>Now I&#8217;m thinking on how to made an external battery because as you may know using Sportstracker will makie your Nokia phone&#8217;s battery last for about 3 hours tops.</p>

<p>If you are in a area well covered with 3G internet speed, you might want to force your Nokia phone to stay on the fast 3G connection instead of automatically switching to the slower EDGE. Some people might prefer to do this if their phone disconnects when the phone is trying to switch between the two. I&#8217;ll show you how to do it.<span id="more-1132"></span></p>
<p class="center"><a href="http://flickr.com/photos/mackarus/2950244871/" title="Force 3G on Flickr - Photo Sharing!"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/force-umts.jpg" alt="Force Umts" height="293" width="448"></a><br />
	<em>Nokia N95 8GB NAM Using 3G Only</em></p>
<p>The trick (not a trick&#8230; more like a setting) is to change the network mode to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS" title="Universal Mobile Telecommunications System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia">UMTS</a>, instead of Dual Mode. You can access this at Settings -> Phone -> Network -> Network Mode -> UMTS. I live in New York City and we&#8217;re blanketed with 3G coverage so I&#8217;m fine leaving it on UMTS only.</p>
<p>Thanks to Erick from <a href="http://www.mobileworldinnovation.com/">Mobile World Innovation</a> for pointing this out to me. Is this something that you have been using all along? Do you recommend this setting? Let me know.</p>

I found something really useful other Mac users might love. I have been able to sync my iCal, Google calendar, and phone&#8217;s calendar using CalDav and GooSync. Read on to find out how.

As an introduction, this solution is all possible thanks to CalDAV support in Google Calendar and Goosync support on S60 phones.

<p>I found something really useful other Mac users might love. I have been able to sync my iCal, Google calendar, and phone&#8217;s calendar using CalDav and GooSync. Read on to find out how.<span id="more-1033"></span></p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/sync-ical-ggal-nokia.jpg" alt="Sync Ical Ggal Nokia" height="137" width="448"></p>
<p>As an introduction, this solution is all possible thanks to <a href="http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=99357">CalDAV support</a> in Google Calendar and <a href="http://goosync.com" title="goosync">Goosync</a> support on S60 phones.</p>
<h4>CalDAV</h4>
<p>With CalDAV support in Google Calendar, you&#8217;ll be able to view and edit your Google Calendar events directly in Apple&#8217;s iCal. Any changes you make in iCal will automatically appear in Google Calendar the next time you sign in (and vice versa). If you use iCal while offline, changes you make will be saved and updated in Google Calendar when you get back online.</p>
<p><strong>Setup iCal.</strong> First you&#8217;ll need to <a href="http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=99358" title="Google Calendar CalDAV support - Calendar Help Center">enable Google Calendar in Apple&#8217;s iCal</a>. Google wrote a detailed how-to so I don&#8217;t need to write it here. </p>
<h4>GooSync</h4>
<p><a href="http://goosync.com" title="goosync"><img class="alignright" src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/goo-sync.jpg" alt="Goo Sync" height="60" width="190"></a><a href="http://goosync.com" title="goosync">Goosync</a> synchronizes the phone’s calendar with Google Calendar without the need of installing an application. I can enter plans on my Nokia N95 8GB’s built in calendar application and then sync it to Google Calendar. I signed up for the free account since all I need is to sync my calendar. You can opt to get the premium type for more features if you wish.</p>
<p><strong>Setup GooSync.</strong> Before you can synchronise your Google Calendar and Contacts you must first ensure your <a href="http://www.goosync.com/AuthenticationHelp.aspx" title="GooSync - Google Authentication Help">GooSync account is correctly authenticated</a> with your Google account. Follow the directions to authenticate which only takes about 3 mouse clicks.</p>
<h4>Finished</h4>
<p>That&#8217;s it you are done. The end result is iCal, Google Calendar and the phone calendar being synced together. You can now edit your calendar on your phone, Mac, or any computer connected to the internet.</p>
<p>The only problem is it requires manual sync on the phone. You need to initiate the sync. I haven&#8217;t found anything right now that allows us to automatically sync our phone with Google calendar.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll never catch me wearing the bulky and ugly <a href="http://europe.nokia.com/A4433270">Nokia BH-604</a> bluetooth headset outside, but I&#8217;m pretty happy using it indoors as a wireless headphone. It was sent to me as a prize for the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/05/29/i-won-2nd-place-in-show-your-s60-smarts-contest/" title="I Won 2nd Place In Show Your S60 Smarts Contest | The Nokia Blog">S60 Smarts Contest</a>.<span id="more-923"></span></p>
<p class="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mackarus/2851385906/" title="don't disturb by mackarus, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3062/2851385906_9c743097cc.jpg" width="448" alt="don't disturb" /></a></p>
<p>Let me give you an example how useful it is. Sheila was really sleepy, but I was wide awake. I wanted to finish watching a Smallville episode but didn&#8217;t want to disturb her. Solution? Use the Nokia BH-604 as a wireless headphone connected to the Apple iMac via bluetooth. Setting it up is too easy. Here&#8217;s how I did it with a Mac:</p>
<p>Put the BH-604 in pairing mode by holding the call button. A blue LED flashes. Under the bluetooth icon on the Mac, click &#8217;set up Bluetooth Device.&#8217;</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/set-up-bt-headset.jpg" alt="Set up bt Headset" height="261" width="365"></p>
<p>I chose to use it as a headphone for this computer because that&#8217;s really all I need it to be.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/bluetooth-setup-assistant-2.jpg" alt="Bluetooth Setup Assistant 2" height="132" width="360"></p>
<p>When asked for a pairing code, the default is &#8216;0000.&#8217; That&#8217;s it!</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/bluetooth-setup-assistant-4.jpg" alt="Bluetooth Setup Assistant 4" height="127" width="360"></p>
<p>So even though I won&#8217;t be wearing it outside, I&#8217;m fine using the Nokia BH-604 as a wireless headphone when watching movies on our 24 inch iMac. Audio quality is fine, but I don&#8217;t have anything to compare it to. Would I recommend the BH-604? No&#8230; I like the form factor of the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/08/20/nokia-ships-bluetooth-headsets-to-limited-edition-nokia-n96-buyers/" title="Nokia Ships Bluetooth Headsets To Limited Edition Nokia N96 Buyers | The Nokia Blog">Nokia BH-603</a> better.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re one of the millions of people using <a href="http://twitter.com/" title="Twitter: What are you doing?">Twitter</a>, I&#8217;ll tell you the best ways to use it with your recent Nokia or S60 phone. I&#8217;ll show you what applications to use and how you can show location, videos, and pictures with your tweets.<span id="more-833"></span></p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/twitter-nokia-e71.jpg" alt="Twitter Nokia e71" height="237" width="437"></p>
<h4>Application For Twitter</h4>
<p>A common question I see is what application to install to use Twitter on their S60 Nokia phones. The answer is twibble. You can even use your phone&#8217;s GPS for twibble to include your location with your tweets. You can supposedly insert photos thru twibble, but I got errors trying. I&#8217;ll tell you more about tweeting with photos so keep reading. <a href="http://m.twibble.de/" title="twibble mobile">Download twibble mobile</a>.</p>
<h4>Using the S60 Browser For Twitter</h4>
<p>If you do not like Twibble, a better way to send tweets <del datetime="2009-02-02T21:36:52+00:00">is accessing <a href="http://m.slandr.net/" title="Slandr Mobile Twitter | Login!">m.slandr.net</a> through the browser.</del> <strong>Update:</strong> I now prefer to use <a href="http://dabr.co.uk/" title="dabr.co.uk - Login">dabr.co.uk</a> because it seems to have more options and looks prettier. You can send tweets, view replies, and check direct messages here as well. This is for you if you don&#8217;t want to bother installing anything on your phone. Alternatively, you can use <a href="http://m.twitter.com/" title="Twitter">m.twitter.com</a> to keep it simple and don&#8217;t need to see replies nor direct messages.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/dabr.jpg" alt="Dabr" height="280" width="210"/> <img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/slandr-twitter.jpg" alt="Slandr Twitter" height="280" width="210"/> <img src="http://thenokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/twibble.jpg" alt="Twibble" height="280" width="210"/><br />
	<em>Dabr, Twibble and Slandr For twitter</em></p>
<h4>How to Add Photos with Tweets</h4>
<p>Add twitpic as an upload site in <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/04/29/how-to-upload-your-videos-and-photos-to-multiple-sites-from-your-nokia-cameraphone/" title="How To: Upload Your Videos and Photos To Multiple Sites From Your Nokia Cameraphone | The Nokia Blog">Shozu</a>. Take a photo, add a title for the picture, then send it to twitpic using Shozu. Here&#8217;s a <a href="http://twitter.com/thenokiablog/statuses/903213175" title="Twitter / Mark Guim: http://twitpic.com/9gj8 - T...">sample tweet with a photo</a> inserted through Shozu.</p>

	<em>Sample tweet using twitpic</em></p>
<h4>How to Add Videos with Tweets</h4>
<p>Another cool way to use Twitter with your Nokia phone is by adding live video streams. You can read about it on my previous post</p>

<p><strong>What you need first:</strong> You&#8217;ll need a cameraphone (I&#8217;m using the <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/tag/n95-8gb/" title="N95 8gb Tagged Posts | The Nokia Blog">Nokia N95 8GB</a> as an example), a <a href="http://twitter.com/" title="Twitter: What are you doing?">Twitter</a> account, and a <a href="http://qik.com/" title="QIK | Streaming video right from your phone">Qik account</a>.</p>
<h4>Setting It Up</h4>
<ul>
<li>Sign in to your Qik profile then click edit profile -> Networks. Twitter is the first one on the list. <a href="http://qik.com/profile/edit_networks" title="QIK | Streaming video right from your phone">Click here</a> if you can&#8217;t find it.</li>
<li>Click Edit this account then type your login info from Twitter.</li>
<li>On the message form, type what you want to show up as the first phrase on each &#8216;tweet.&#8217; I chose live video for my account.</li>
<li>Check &#8220;Tweet all videos&#8221; so that videos automatically get announced on Twitter.</li>
<li>Click save changes. Done.</li>
</ul>
<p class="center"><img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080818-m57694snxb9f83f35x3pkuc72y.png" alt="Editing my profile » QIK"/><br />
<em>Setting it up</em></p>
<h4>Using It</h4>
<ul>
<li>Open up Qik on your phone. </li>
<li>Optional, but I recommend setting a title for each stream. You can do this by Menu -> Stream Info -> Set Title.</li>
<li>When you&#8217;re ready just press &#8220;Stream.&#8221; Your twitter friends will be notified right away and can watch what you&#8217;re doing live instead of just reading about it.</li>
</ul>
<p class="center"><img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080818-8q5uxb52fp3qcn7mc71rsdkeg3.png" alt="Qik Set Title"/><br />
	<em>Set the title on Qik. Here&#8217;s my <a href="http://twitter.com/thenokiablog/statuses/891474600" title="Twitter / Mark Guim: live video<br />
	[qik] - Inside ...">tweet example</a> for this post.</em></p>
<p>You are now ready to live stream and Tweet at the same time. Be careful with a live drunk tweet though&#8230; you might regret it in the morning.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ll show you how to get info from Google Earth to Nokia Maps. Part of the reason I needed to do this was finding <a title="Los Angeles Times" href="http://theguide.latimes.com/blogs/soundboard/2008/07/10/nine-inch-nails-sends-fans-to-downward-spiraled-drainpipe/">tickets hidden by Nine Inch Nails</a> around Los Angeles. Read more for the guide and backstory.<span id="more-436"></span></p>
<h4>Backstory</h4>
<p>One of my favorite bands is Nine Inch Nails. Later this summer they start the <a title="tour.nin.com" href="http://tour.nin.com/" target="_blank">Lights in the Sky</a> tour. In June, they also put up a .kml file to be used with Google Earth. There&#8217;s info about installation on their flickr page below.</p>
<p class="center"><a title="NIN Tour on Google Earth on Flickr - Photo Sharing!" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/nineinchnails/2610205036/"><img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080716-jh5eaegenui9d4b5t3cai8w5a9.jpg" alt="NIN Google Earth" /></a><br />
<em>NIN tour Viewed in Google Earth</em></p>
<p>The .kml file is connected to a server. On July 4th at 2PM, Nine Inch nails updated the .kml file. Around 6PM, someone noticed something strange in the KML file. A question mark was placed in Burbank. The only info said &#8220;Under a Rock&#8221;. I inputted the street name into Nokia Maps and drove to the location. I couldn&#8217;t get the exact location, so I had to navigate by eye when I got nearby. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/drtran/sets/72157605987205335/">I found nothing there.</a> I found out later in the night someone got there about 10 minutes before me.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080716-ca6f7bfw6ucwn26gbrq4wrgy41.jpg" alt="under the rock" /><br />
<em>Someone found the tickets before me.</em></p>
<p>On July 8, another question mark showed in Griffith Park. The clue said &#8220;in the pipe&#8221;. I didn&#8217;t find out about this one until it was long too late. It took two hours to be found.</p>
<p>On July 12 at 4:15pm, another question mark popped, this time it was near Anaheim. The clue said &#8220;Campsite of Anza&#8221;. This place was 50 miles away. I figured I had 1 hour to get there, so I hopped in the car and drove. I didn&#8217;t get there until 5:40. Someone got there before me again.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t have my N82 with me that day (I sent it out for repairs). I could have routed myself around the traffic with Google Maps and found the exact location with Nokia Maps a little quicker if I did.</p>
<p>This whole ordeal made me wonder, how do I get info from Google Earth to Nokia Maps. In the past, The Nokia Blog has covered <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/07/12/how-to-send-locations-from-google-maps-on-computer-to-nokia-maps-on-phone/">Google Maps to Nokia Maps</a> and <a href="http://thenokiablog.com/2008/07/11/how-to-use-nokia-maps-to-send-current-location-to-your-friends/">Phone to Phone location sending</a>, but not Google earth to phone.</p>
<h4>Steps</h4>
<ul>
<li>Start off in Google Earth. Select your location and save it. Be sure to save as .kml and not .kmz.</li>
<li>Next, go to this website: <a title="GPS - Points of Interest Conversion and Search - Convert your files, search and download new poi - Tomtom ov2, Garmin asc, Google kml, Nokia lmx" href="http://poiconvert.free.fr/">http://poiconvert.free.fr/</a></li>
<li>For the source format, select .kml</li>
<li>Next upload your file.</li>
<li>Finally, select your output format. You can choose formats for TomTom (.ov2), Garmin (.asc) and Nokia Maps (.lmx). I can&#8217;t test TomTom or Garmin, so I&#8217;ll talk about Nokia Maps.</li>
<li>Send the .lmx file to your phone. I sent the file with bluetooth for ease of use. You can also plug in the USB cable and then transfer the file, then open it with a file explorer. You can also email the file to yourself as an attached file.</li>
<li>Open the .lmx file and Nokia Maps will start up and find the location.</li>
</ul>
