Nokia Research Shows Off Indoor Mapping

post thumbnail

Nokia Research wants to take what’s been done in navigation outdoors and bring it inside. Imagine using your phone to navigate through malls, exhibit halls and other large buildings. According to EE Times, Nokia gathered about 30 companies including chip makers and service providers on Tuesday at the Sunnyvale offices to show off their research. They want to create a formal group to set global standards for such indoor navigation services by 2013.

Nokia Maps was released as a web app last week. Devices with HTML5 browsers can use it. That means iPhone, iPod touch and iPad with iOS4 or Android phones with Android 2.2 and Android 2.3. I made a video to show you how it looks on the iPhone 4.

Check out maps.nokia.com for new updates. Three more cities got added to 3D view, but the coolest update is probably the heat map. You can now check out where the hot spots are for shopping, nightlife, food, and tourist attractions. They’ve also added an option to book a hotel directly from the map. I made a screencast to show you how it looks on my browser.

Sygic Mobile Maps Now Available on Nokia N900 for Europe & USA

post thumbnail

Initially launched for Europe a few days ago, I noticed Sygic Mobile Maps for the Nokia N900 now support the US as well. It is the first turn-by-turn voice guided navigation application on Maemo. I’m a little surprised that Sygic was able to deliver their app before Nokia implemented voice navigation to their built-in Ovi Maps.

Must-Have App: Maps Booster by Skyhook Wireless

post thumbnail

My Nokia phones need to find my position accurately and quickly since I use location services like geotagging photos, checking-in on Foursquare, or navigating with Ovi maps. Fortunately there’s a revolutionary app called Maps Booster that helps your Symbian phone find your location really fast no matter what other applications need it. That’s right… I said revolutionary. If you don’t believe me, watch Steve Jobs explain the awesome technology behind the app.
