Nokia just published their second quarter financial results. The report is 35 pages long and you can read it directly here. 10.2 million smartphones were shipped. 4 million of that were Nokia Lumia devices. The remainder 6.2 million units were Symbian and Meego phones.

10.2 million smartphones in the second quarter this year was actually lower than the previous quarter. Nokia said the decline was due to lower Symbian volumes sold, but was partially offset by higher volumes of Nokia Lumia devices.

Symbian and Meego phones add up to 6.2 million units. The report did not include specific numbers for each of the OS.

In addition to the 10.2 million smartphones, Nokia shipped 73.5 million feature phones. This was a 4% increase from the previous quarter. Nokia reported the increase was due to the continued ramp up of their latest generation of feature phones, such as the Nokia 100 and Nokia 101,
which they sell for below EUR 50.

For comparison, Apple shipped 35.1 million iPhones in the same quarter.

Commenting on the Q2 results, Stephen Elop said:

We shipped four million Lumia Smartphones in Q2, and we plan to provide updates to current Lumia products over time, well beyond the launch of Windows Phone 8. We believe the Windows Phone 8 launch will be an important catalyst for Lumia. During the quarter, we demonstrated stability in our feature phone business, and enhanced our competitiveness with the introduction of our first full touch Asha devices.

Nokia expects the next quarter to be challenging due to product transitions, but I’ll continue to root for them. Will you?

The Jolla team consists of a substantial number of MeeGo’s core engineers and directors. Together with international investors and partners, Jolla will design, develop and sell new MeeGo based smartphones.

Nokia Lumia 910 showed up in Remote Device Access where developers can virtually play with devices. WPCentral thinks it’s a variant of the Nokia Lumia 900 that will come out for T-Mobile.

The timing is perfect since the Nokia N9 just received a firmware update to PR1.1. This update includes

NFC tag reading to instantly interact with NFC tags

Music controls on lock screen

Photo and video shooting with color filters: black & white, sepia, vivid, negative, solarize

More powerful multitasking with improved memory handling

Swype for fast typing

Faster MfE synch, synchronizing only active folders

Noice cancellation reduces background noise so that your friends hear you better

Close apps easily with swiping down, this now on by default

New indicators for standby screen like charging and calendar

The Nokia N9 Developer page explained the current height is too small and fixing this is important especially for non-european languages using non-latin script.

Here’s a screenshot of Techmeme with the Nokia N9 running PR1.1. Thanks @DhruvBhutani!

Here’s a demo of Foursquare for the Nokia N9. It’s pretty good! The main screen shows a navigation drop down, specials nearby, map, search, and list of places to check in. I like that this app gives you the options to broadcast to Twitter and/or Facebook. Video after the jump.

Another great feature is the option to include a photo with check-in. A gallery opens up and you select a photo to include with the check-in. It’d be better if there’s an option to open the camera from within the app to add a new photo. I hope to see this in an update.

The drop down list lets you go to Places, Friends, Shout, Explore, Profile, and Notifications. I think this app is on to a great start. I hope it gets more improvements in future updates.

Foursquare for MeeGo is free at the Nokia Store. Check it out and let us know what you think.

I’m currently gathering my thoughts for the upcoming review of the Nokia N9, but I wanted to show you a cool app right away. It’s called ScreenshotMee. It lets you take screenshots on the Nokia N9 by just putting your hand over the phone. It’s free at the Ovi Store (yea.. it’s still called Ovi).

You can also watch this video in HD on Youtube. Subscribe to the channel to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog.

The app is simple and requires no timer like the other options available at the store. There’s a sensor near the earpiece to the top right. It might be a little hard to see, but it’s definitely there. When you’re ready to take a screenshot, cover the sensor. If you like what you see, click save. Press on the ‘make new’ button to try again. That’s it! ScreenshotMee is a really simple app that I’d recommend if you end up getting the Nokia N9. Look for it at the Ovi or Nokia Store.

I asked Sheila what her first impressions of the Nokia N9 were. She said it smelled funny. That surprised me! I usually comment first on the size and the feel of the device in my hands. I’ll have to check when I get back home.

I’ll be home in a few days to play with the Nokia N9. I’ll have a review up soon. In the meantime, let me know if you have any specific questions about the device.

By the way, I’m meeting with Nokia tomorrow. I’ll be touring their test center in San Diego. I hope to see some cool thing things and report back as soon as I can. Stay tuned!

Listen up, Malaysia and Singapore! Nokia N9 ninjas are invading your streets this month. I don’t know what these ninjas can do, but there will be some swiping for sure. This promotion from Nokia might sound funny, but you’d want to take it seriously. There will be winners of the Nokia N9 at the end of the month. Read on for more details.

Click here for the Nokia N9 Ninjas in Malaysia.
Click here for the Nokia N9 Ninjas in Singapore.

The basic idea is to get a Shuriken-shaped card from a Ninja at the locations listed on the websites. You then have to bring these cards to participating stores to redeem a Shuriken magnet. Participants must then follow the instructions in the Shuriken magnet box.

Nokia will list the winners on the websites. Don’t worry if you’re not in Malaysia or Singapore. It looks like Nokia will be posting videos of them soon.

Unity technologies announced on Wednesday that they will bring Unity-authored titles to the Nokia N9. I’ve included a highlight reel of their games, so can see what you might be able to play on that beautiful Nokia N9.

“The N9 is an awesome entry into a very competitive market and we’re looking forward to providing Nokia with some of the best titles that Unity developers have created,” said Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason in the <a href="http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Unite-11-Unity-Technologies-to-Bring-Union-Games-to-Nokia-N9-Mobile-Platform-1566594.htm" title="Unite 11: Unity Technologies to Bring Union Games to Nokia N9 Mobile

Unity Technologies has more than 650,000 registered users worldwide — including Bigpoint, Cartoon Network, Coca-Cola, Disney, Electronic Arts, LEGO, Microsoft, NASA, Nickelodeon, Ubisoft, Warner Bros., large and small studios, indies, students and hobbyists — all using Unity to create games and interactive 3D. They are headquartered in San Francisco and has development offices worldwide.

There’s no word on when we’ll expect to see these games at the Nokia Store.
I wonder if all the new Nokia phones will have similar packaging. The packaging design is different from the previous Nokia devices I’ve tried. It reminds me of Apple and HTC.

The device and its new UI look beautiful. We’ll try to get a review unit as soon as possible and share our thoughts on it. Does this video convince you to buy this phone?

The MeeGo device was announced 3 months ago. As a reminder, the Nokia N9 features a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen, 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, and NFC for pairing with accessories.

“Since we announced the Nokia N9 in June this year, the feedback that it has gotten from discerning and avid smartphone users across the world has been nothing short of fantastic,” said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President of Marketing, Nokia in the press release. “With the innovations in industrial design, user interface, and the Qt developer experience, the Nokia N9 sets the bar for how natural technology can feel, and represents the first in a number of products from Nokia that will be brought to life in similar fashion.”

There are three colors: black, cyan and magenta. There are two storage options: 16GB and 64GB.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia N9 16GB and 64GB is approximately EUR 480 and EUR 560 before applicable taxes or subsidies, with pricing and availability varying from region to region and operator to operator.

A lot of us are complaining that our countries aren’t getting the Nokia N9. Perhaps a tweet from insider Eldar Murtazin might shed some light. He shared earlier today that Nokia has only produced 92,425 units of the Nokia N9 including prototypes. For comparison, Apple sold 3 million iPhone 4 units in just 3 weeks.

We don’t know if Eldar’s numbers are accurate, but the Nokia N9 certainly won’t be easy to get for all interested buyers. Nokia has already confirmed the Nokia N9 won’t be coming to America or the UK.

If you haven’t heard of Mr. Murtazin before, he also claimed that the upcoming Nokia Windows Phones won’t be special. This contradicts Nokia CEO Stephen Elop’s remarks that they had a special deal with Microsoft to customize Windows Phone software. We’ll see if either of these rumors are true.

We were very flattered when Nokia approached us with the task of creating a start-up sequence for their new N9 smartphone.

The Scobleizer was walking through San Francisco Airport and then ran into Reno Marioni, director of global social partnerships at Nokia. Scoble said Marioni had a secret device in his briefcase but wouldn’t show it to him. Scoble did end up looking at a Nokia N9, which he thought was, “damn nice.”

Scoble thought he was looking at a Nokia Windows phone, but a closer inspection of his Google+ photo reveals he was actually looking at a Nokia N9. He was shown the NFC capability, which lets you add data from all sorts of cards, stickers, or other physical objects.

Scoble has been really tough on Nokia lately, but said he, “might have to rethink Nokia’s chances.” I think Marioni forgot to tell Scoble that the Nokia N9 isn’t coming to the United States.

Aziz told us the left side of the banner is written in Kazakh language, while the right is the same message in Russian. Almost everything in Kazakhstan is done that way in 2 languages because Russian is used as a second state language.

At the bottom right corner, there are logos of two major electronics stores in Kazakhstan, Technodom and Sulpak. You can preorder the Nokia N9 online now on their websites. Technodom shows a release date of September 9th with the price of 99990 Kazakhstani tenges (680 USD).

As an organization Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout and each country decides which products to introduce from those available. These decisions are based on a local assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia’s product portfolio and are intended to provide the best local portfolio for the UK market. Although we are delighted with the very positive reception that the Nokia N9 has received, here in the UK there are no plans to offer the Nokia N9 at present.

So… any guesses to what market is next on the “not releasing the Nokia N9″ list?

After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world. At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available. Decisions are based on an assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia’s extensive product portfolio and the best way in which to address local market opportunities.
