Nokia Messaging for Nokia N900 Missing From T-Mobile USA Users? (Updated)

Updated with Nokia’s response below. I updated my Nokia N900 to Maemo 1.2 and wanted to start everything from scratch. The first thing I wanted to set up was my email. To get push email on the Nokia N900, I needed to add my Gmail accounts through the Nokia Messaging option. To my surprise, it was not listed as an option after I updated.

Twitter user @JJKLEE suggested to replace my T-Mobile USA SIM card with another card to see Nokia Messaging as an email option on the Nokia N900. I inserted my AT&T SIM and there it was back on the list. I thought I was imagining things, so I put the T-mobile SIM card back on. Nokia Messaging disappeared again!

This could mean Nokia Messaging doesn’t like T-mobile USA… the only provider that can provide 3G for the N900 in the USA! The workaround is to insert a different SIM card, set up Nokia Messaging, then put the T-mobile card back on.

Anyone else experiencing this issue on their Nokia N900 with T-mobile or any other SIM cards?

Update: Davis Fields from the Nokia Messaging team confirmed the issue and assures us they are working on it. Here’s the note he sent:

We are aware (and currently resolving) the fact that you cannot create a new Nokia Messaging account using a US T-Mobile SIM. Should have a fix by next month – realize that’s not a great answer, but, would rather tell you what’s going on than leave you in the dark.

New Messaging Devices Nokia C3, Nokia C6, & Nokia E5 Officially Announced

Nokia announced 3 new affordable handsets designed around messaging and social networking – the Nokia C3, Nokia C6, and Nokia E5. I should get a cookie, because that’s what I guessed for the countdown. The C3 and C6 are expected in the 2nd quarter this year for EUR 90 and 220 respectively, while the E5 is expected in the 3rd quarter for EUR 180.

Nokia C3

The Nokia C3 is the first device to bring a full QWERTY keyboard to Series 40 and is the first in the range to enable access to social networks directly on the homescreen. It also comes with Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat, meaning first time users can set up email and chat accounts straight from the device, without the need for a PC. Main hardware features include 2.4 inch screen, 2 megapixel camera, Qwerty keyboard, and wifi connectivity. Complete tech specs are available here. It will come in Grey, White, and Pink. Nokia C6

The Nokia C6 is a Symbian^1 smartphone combining the benefits of a 3.2 inch touch screen with a full slide out keyboard. It also features a 5 megapixel camera, 3G connectivity, built-in GPS and more. Complete tech specs are available here. It will come in Black and White. Product video below.

Nokia E5

The Nokia E5 is designed for those that want to be productive in both their professional and personal lives. It is a Symbian S60 3rd Edition device that follows the Nokia E72. It features 2.4 inch display, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, Qwerty keypad, and more. Complete tech specs are available here. Nokia To Unveil New Messaging Solutions on Tuesday April 13th

If you head over to Nokia’s event page titled Everyone Connect, there’s a countdown that ends on April 13th, 4AM Eastern. Further investigation leads us to 2 clues that the countdown is about ‘new messaging solutions.’ That vague statement could mean new devices, services, or apps. We won’t know for sure until that clock reaches zero.

Clue #1

Within the page’s HTML code is a reference to an image not displayed on the page. It looks like this:

This image is stored in a sub-directory that you can access directly by clicking here.

Clue #2

Within the flash file is a message hidden from the main page. It says,

Please stay with us. We’ll be unveiling Nokia’s new messaging solutions shortly.

It will most likely appear right before the unveiling. The image in the flash file looks like this:

Based on the two clues, my guess is that Nokia will announce new affordable devices (maybe Cseries) with an updated version of Nokia Messaging. What do you think it’s about?

Video: The Nokia Messaging Musical

Have you seen the Nokia Messaging Musical video yet? It’s corny but worth watching if you have a few minutes to spare. It’s The Office meets Glee. Nokia users familiar with Nokia Messaging and others who don’t know the simple email setup email on compatible Nokia devices should watch this video.

I’m glad I can still understand some Tagalog. I’ll try to translate the non-english parts of the video. Please correct me if I get any of it wrong.

The main message of the video is that it’s easy to set up email on Nokia devices with Nokia Messaging. You enter your email address and your password, and that’s basically it. New emails gets pushed to your device through Nokia Messaging. The Nokia devices I spotted in this video are the Nokia E72, N97, N97 mini, and the N96.

Nokia Messaging for Social Networks Beta2 App Review

I’ve been using the second beta to Nokia Messaging for Social Networks the weekend before today’s official announcement. If you need a reminder, the first beta was released at Nokia World, supporting only Facebook. The new version adds new options for Facebook and adds support for Twitter. Read on for some of my feedback.

The Nokia Messaging team listened to the user feedback from the first release. The major addition is Twitter support. Product Manager Davis Fields explained, “We’ve added much more to this release including Twitter, all delivered live to the homescreen on your Nokia.” Clicking on a tweet or a friend’s Facebook update opens the full client displaying the relevant page so you can quickly respond.

Feedback

Nokia would like its users to try out the beta give them some feedback. You can download the app at messaging.nokia.com. This beta supports the Nokia N97 N97 mini, and the 5800.

My feedback. It’s great that they’ve added Twitter, but it’s definitely very basic. Pressing on most of the options usually ended up with a coming soon message. You can update, view mentions (hidden below the “what’s happening” form), and favorites (also hidden).

During a pre-briefing, we were told that this will not replace full-featured Twitter apps like Gravity, and the final software will be more targeted towards new users. I sort of disagree since I think new users will probably have a better Twitter experience using the Gravity application.

One bug I noticed that needs to be fixed immediately is the Twitter reply. It does not register the original tweet, hence not showing the “in reply to” submessage.

I also found this beta to be very slow at times even on my fast wifi connection. For example, my friends’ Facebook wall and photo albums take too long to load while there’s a considerable waiting time for the Facebook calendar to load as well. I’m not sure whether to blame the hardware I’m using which is the Nokia N97 mini or the beta software.

I really can’t complain too much since Nokia Messaging for Social Networks is still in beta. I’ve provided my feedback and Nokia is hoping to hear from you, too. I’m looking forward to the upcoming releases to see more improvements.

United States Turned On for Nokia Messaging

@nokiamessaging tweeted on Friday that the US has been turned on for Nokia Messaging. This means we can now set up our Nokia Messaging accounts directly from the phone. Previously, US residents had to press a button at email.nokia.com using a computer, then wait for an SMS on the phone.

I mentioned on the Nokia N900 review that Nokia Messaging was previously not an option as an account type in the email application, but it’s now there. All you need to do is login.

I was also able to set up Nokia Messaging on the Nokia N97 mini by first downloading the app from messaging.nokia.com. When I entered my email address, it told me that the email was affiliated with a Nokia Messaging account.

I’m glad that Nokia Messaging has been “turned on” for the US consumers. Don’t know what this service is about? Basically, it is designed to let you use any of your existing email addresses, but it “pushes” the new mails to your device instead of periodically “pulling” them from the server.
