When the Nokia N78 comes out, its price will be close to the Nokia N82. You need to decide what is more important to you because these two devices are not that similar in features. I’ll explain some important features and let you decide which phone wins over your wallet.

Nokia N78 Pros

The Nokia N78 runs on a newer OS with nicer fades and animations as well as other improvements. You can review Neil’s video demo of the Nokia N78 to see what I mean.

The Nokia N78 features a 1200mAh battery compared to the Nokia N82’s 1050mAh. I’ll assume a bigger battery means longer battery life.

The Nokia N78 is thinner than the Nokia N82.

The Nokia N78 has an FM transmitter useful for long car journeys.

Nokia N78 has a North American variation that will work on AT&T’s fast 3G data. Nokia N82 users in the US are stuck on slow EDGE speed.

Nokia N78 Cons

The Nokia N78 features only a 3 megapixel camera with VGA video capable of 15 frames per second. The Nokia N82 comes with 5 megapixels and 30 fps videos.

Nokia N78’s LED flash is not as bright as Nokia N82’s Xenon flash. Take a look at my Nokia N95 LED flash vs Nokia N82 Xenon flash video.

Nokia N78 does not have a TV-out compared to the Nokia N82. You won’t be able to quickly show off your videos and photos to your friends on a TV with a cable.

Thoughts

Did I miss anything? In the Nokia N78 vs Nokia N82 battle, which one is your winner and why?

I just started using Nokia Maps 2.0 Beta on the Nokia N95 8GB to remember my spot via GPS and help me find my car in case I forget. What sucks about living near two big hospitals is that it is really hard to find parking during the day. It’s not a problem at night, but I often have to park 5-6 blocks away if I get home early.

Remember It

Right after parking, I add the current location to Places.

Add your spot to Places

Find It

When I need to find my car, I just go to favorites and select Walk to on the parking spot. As you walk, trail crumbs also follow you (see the white dots).

This works great on other Nokia phones with built-in GPS. To name a few: Nokia N82, Nokia N95, and the upcoming Nokia N78 and Nokia N96.

The Nokia 6220 Classic recently passed FCC approval, but this phone completely flew right by me. I did not know this phone had 5 megapixels, xenon flash, GPS, and the latest S60 version. It’s got some improvements over the Nokia N96, N78, and N82 so I’m confused why it’s not part of the Nseries?

The Nokia 6220 classic showed up on the FCC pages yesterday. Here are the documents for your viewing including the user manual.

External photos

FCC ID label

Internal photos

Test report

Manual

For taking pictures, I’ll assume that it will take just as good photos as the Nokia N82 which is part of the Nseries (hence the N letter) featuring the first Nokia with xenon flash. Check how much better the xenon flash on the Nokia N82 versus LED flash on the Nokia N95. The Nokia N96 doesn’t even have Xenon flash. The Nokia 6220 classic also even improves over the Nokia N82 by having built-in geotagging. If a GPS signal exists, all the photos taken by the Nokia 6220 will have its location embedded within the photo’s exif data.

For videos, the Nokia 6220 is capable of shooting VGA (640×480) at 30 frames per second, just like the Nokia N95, N93, N82, and other Nseries phones that I’ve used on my videoblogs.

The Nokia 6220 classic even sports a TV-out, something the Nokia N81 doesn’t have.

So why is the Nokia 6220 Classic not part of the Nseries? It’s got pretty good specifications on paper. Is it because it can’t connect to wifi? I think that’s the only important missing component on the phone.

Since the Nokia 6220 Classic just passed FCC aproval, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing these in stores. It costs around 325 Euros before subsidies and taxes. Will people buy it? Did you know about this phone? This one definitely snuck through me.

Eldar Murtazin gives a comprehensive Nokia N78 review at Mobile Review. He writes about the hardware and software aspects of the N78 as well as how it will affect the sales of the Nokia N82. It is a long, but very interesting read and I recommend you to check it out.

I did not really pay attention to the Nokia N78 when it was announced at Mobile World Congress while I was there, and after reading this review, I’m still not interested. Mainly, I can’t go back to 3.2 megapixel camera when I currently have 5 megapixels on my Nokia N95.

Position. Mobile-Review’s thoughts on positioning of the Nokia N78 was interesting. Eldar mentions that the Nokia N78’s position is complex. People will buy the Nokia N82 for the camera, so who will buy the Nokia N78? The Nokia N78, in theory, will be perfect for those currently holding on to their highly popular Nokia N73. But Eldar suggests that Nokia maintains a 70-80 Euro price lower than the Nokia N82 or else the sales of both phones will go down.

It is simple. If the ‘record location’ option is on and a GPS position is acquired, the camera will save the location information within the pictures’ Exif data. No need for other applications like Shozu or Location Tagger.

An icon on the screen tells us if location is unavailable and changes when location is found. I don’t think the built-in geotagging feature will be exclusive to the Nokia N78 and we should probably expect this feature in the upcoming phones with built-in GPS.

According to the Nokia N78 user manual, the GPS receiver is located at the top left corner to shorten the time of locking in the position. We won’t know for sure how accurate the GPS is or how it affects battery life until we get our hands on one.

Viewing the location of the photos can be viewed on the phone as well according to the manual, but Flickr also does a fine job at showing off your geotagged photos.

If you look at the fifth page of the Nokia N78 (RM-236) SAR test, it’ll say

…some reports are duplicated from RM-235…The difference between RM-236 and RM-235 is that RM-236 has had WCDMA900, WCDMA2100, and WLAN2450 components removed

I’m assuming RM-235 is the phone code for the Europoean Nokia N78 and the RM-236 is the variation missing the 3G and Wifi components. RM-235 is not currently on the FCC site.

Update: Upon closer look, the mystery phone is a flip phone with 1500mah battery. Thanks Ying.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the only Nokia Nseries phone that currently works with AT&T 3G are the Nokia N75 and the Nokia N95 NAM. Having another phone working with US 3G means more options.
