Mobile Review came through with a very early preview of the Nokia N900, an upcoming device running the new Maemo 5 OS. I wrote that Nokia needed a facelift and they responded with the N900. I think this is the freshness that Nokia’s high-end users like me are looking for.

Mobile Review came through with a very early preview of the Nokia N900, an upcoming device running the new Maemo 5 OS. I wrote that Nokia needed a facelift and they responded with the N900. I think this is the freshness that Nokia’s high-end users like me are looking for.

Eldar Murtazin’s preview of Noka N900 is worth reading entirely but I’ve broke it down for a shorter read.

Specs

Side-slider form factor similar to the Nokia N810.

5MP camera with lens cover similar to Nokia N97.

1320mAh battery

32GB internal memory + microSDHC slot for extra storage.

Responsive 800×480 pixel resistive screen

UI

There are lots of UI screenshots provided by Mobile-Review, but here are some of my favorites.

Music Player

Customizable Home Screen

Nokia Maps

Applications menu

Multitasking

Impressions

Here are some of the stand-out impressions from Mr. Murtazin.

For simplicity sake, it runs the next version of Maemo and it differs dramatically from the Nokia N810.

Variety of visual effects, smooth transitions and decent reaction time of the touch screen which is a significant improvement over the Nokia N97.

Browser is pretty stable, and it supports flash, video and applets.

Phone’s GPS department seemed well-tuned.

Context menus are made in the form of pop-ups which are easy to dismiss. All you need to do is press on any area of the screen outside the menu and it’ll be closed in an instant.

True mobile powerhouse… that comes wrapped in a very eye-candy and functional UI at that

Available late in 2009 for 550 Euro (subject to change).

Are you excited as I am about this device?

I am heading to Germany, but don’t expect less posts here. What’s great about blogging is that I can be anywhere. I have been sponsored by Nokia/Maemo to join them at the Maemo Summit on the 19th and 20th. I will be learning more about the platform, the Nokia Internet Tablets like Nokia N810 or N800, where they’re heading, and what it means to customers like us.

I’m looking forward to the summit and will gather as much information as I can to blog here.

Fortunately, I will also have some free time to tour Berlin so I am really excited! If you have any recommendations of places to see and visit let me know in the comments below. I installed a German translator on my phone to help me out while I’m out and about. I’ll also report back how useful it is.

Mobility Rocks!

By the way, I am writing this post on my Macbook Pro at JFK airport using my Nokia N95 8GB’s internet connection via Joikuspot while I wait for my flight. Since I don’t want to arrive in Berlin with a drained battery, the phone is also charging while connected to my laptop’s USB port using the Nokia CA-100 cable.

The inclusion of filters, RSS reader, Tray Icon and a few other plug-ins make it the first application installed on my N810. Email is a must have on any mobile device and while I could get by using Modest, Claws-mail puts it to shame. Now if only Maemo allowed users to select their default applications life would be truly grand indeed.

Pidgin. You can’t have a mobile device without talking about Instant Messaging (IM). This is usually the second application I install on my Tablet. With support for nearly everything IM network known to man, Pidgin is very robust and easy to use. I particularly love the meta-contacts feature (creating a combined contact for friends with logins on a multitude of networks). Pidgin also has a number of great plug-ins you may find useful, such as LED notification. Linux users will feel right at home with Pidgin on Maemo, as it is nearly identical in every way.

Xournal. My newest favorite application that as quickly earned a fond place in my heart. I love its simplicity and yet the powerful features it offers. Xournal truly is a pen and paper replacement.

Maemo WordPy. Maybe not a must install for all users, its one handy application for anyone using Wordpress or Blogger. With included support for Flickr upload and inclusion into posts WordPy is a handy application for veteran and new bloggers a like. Given the portability of the Internet Tablet, this is one application any blogger will find useful. Drafts can only be saved locally if planning to re-edit later as it does lack the ability to access any posts already published or saved online but this one of the few draw backs. Another great addition to this application would be a spell checker. The small keys on the N810 lend themselves to easy and frequent typos if not careful, as I will testify.

Mauku. Mauku is a must for users of Jaiku. The recent update has the added benefit of gestures making navigating simpler including access URLs, both Jaiku and Internet. Twitter fans will be jealous of this application. If you want to try the latest and greatest of Mauku change the Innologies Package Repository components field from user to unstable (this is at your own risk).

Large Status Clock. As the name implies it is a clock for the status bar. There are a few settings that make it unique to typical clock applications such as the ability to change color as a preset alarm nears. Large Status clock fills one of the obvious voids in the Internet Tablet OS.

LoadApplet. This is the Task Manager of the Internet Tablet world with the added benefit of being able to take screenshots (all the screenshots seen here and Flickr are taken using LoadApplet).

OMWeather. Other Maemo Weather is a great applet that sits right on the desktop that it highly customizable for any number of cities around the world. Admittedly I have had some issues with this application from time to time which may or may not relate to the weather data but nothing a uninstall, reinstall and reboot hasn’t fixed. Despite these hiccups I do enjoy the ease of use for the most current weather data.

Others

There are a few other applications that I use but more for fun than anything e.g. Countdown Home. The best advise I can give you is to check the Maemo Garage or browse the Application Manager for that application that is going make the Internet Tablet that much better. Don’t be afraid to play, you can always flash should things go horribly wrong. Best of luck and happy application hunting.

What Are Your Favorite Apps?

We’d like to know your favorite applications for the Nokia Internet Tablet. Let us know your top applications in the comments below or write a blog post and send linkback or pingback!

This past year I’ve had the opportunity to travel a bit more than I had in recent years, giving me a real opportunity to change the way I’ve travelled in the past. By reducing travel clutter, I’m talking about all that paper your wasting printing travel itineraries, rental car or hotel confirmations and endless other items you might print for your trip. Our Nokia devices actually help us with this.

In recent years there has been a real push to do your part to help the environment. Saving the environment is great but let’s face it many won’t go out of their way to make an impact unless it either benefits them or is easier than the way they use to do things. Here’s a tip that does both.

In my travels nearly every hotel, rental car agency, airline, bus or train I’ve ever used suggest printing your confirmations, itineraries and other miscellaneous items. I’m here to tell you to stop wasting the paper and toner.

Nokia Devices and PDF Documents

First you’ll need to verify your device has a PDF reader. Most if not all S60 devices released in the last year or two has Adobe Acrobat Lite either pre-installed or available for download from Nokia or Adobe. Nokia Internet Tablet uses have Evince available for install, check application manager or Maemo Garage.

Next step is to install some kind of PDF creator. There’s the standard Adobe Acrobat Pro (version 8 or less) or Acrobat Standard (version 9). Wikipedia has a rather comprehensive list of PDF readers, creators and editors; one of these is bound to suit our purpose here.

Now that we have the necessary software, let’s start printing–electronically that is! Print those confirmations, itineraries and other necessary documents. Using whatever method suits you best, transfer those electronic documents to your S60-powered Nokia phones or the N8×0 Internet Tablets.

Email backup. Before our recent vacation, I not only put these documents on my Nokia N810 but also the wife’s Nokia N800. As an emergency back up plan you could even email yourself these documents for safe keeping in Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail or other locations. In a pinch you could gain access to these documents if some unforeseen disaster should befall your beloved devices.

Passport Copy. The uses of PDF isn’t solely limited to these temporary or one time use documents. For years, police have been advocating making photocopies of your entire wall’s contents in case of loss or theft. Going out of the country? Consider scanning your passport ahead of time. In the event your passport is lost, stolen or the victim of some horrible accident, the digital copy could easily be produce as evidence for the local embassy or consulate to help expedite get your safe return home.

Conclusion

When I started considering and looking at the possibilities, they truly started jumping out at me. Before I knew it, I was taking all sorts of documents to work to scan into PDFs on the Xerox machines. I started carrying with me important documents I might need in a pinch: everything from powers of attorney to medical histories. Be sure to take appropriate and prudent security measures with documents sensitive in nature. Even if you don’t plan on carrying around a single document, this method can still be helpful for quick and easy reference at home as well. It’s also convenient knowing I can access all these documents from my Nokia devices.

I arrived in Spain this morning and headed to a beautiful resort, Le Meridien RA in Calafell. I’m staying at a duplex with a balcony having an incredible view of the beach. Jeremiah from Nokia Users and I decided to preview Barcelona before meeting up with the rest of the bloggers at night. Knowledge deficit in the Spanish language led to getting lost in the train. We eventually found our way back to meet with the rest of the group, though. Take a look at my picture story with the Nokia N82.

The resort the we are staying at is incredible. You can lie on the bed and see the beach through the high-ceiling window.

The wonderful morning went downhill when Jeremiah from Nokia Users and I decided to check out Barcelona, which was an hour away via train because all of the closer hotels were fully booked for the Mobile World Congress.

When we got to Catalunya, Barcelona, most of the stores were closed because of Sunday (so weird). I was looking to buy a pre-paid sim-card, but no luck. The street performers entertained us while we looked for free wifi hotspots on our Nokia N82, Nokia N810, and Nokia N95 to contact others to meet up.

When we couldn’t connect our phones to the internet, we used our little Spanish speaking skills for directions. We ended up taking the train the opposite way and wasted about half hour. Thanks to Jeremiah’s Nokia N95 showing that we were going the wrong way, we didn’t end up somewhere hours away from the hotel.

When we got back to the hotel, all the bloggers were there already. These included James from Nokia Creative, Norm from Symbian World, Vaibhav from The Symbian blog, Matthew from Darlamack, Amir from Phone Rush, Stefanos from Pestaola, and Neil from iGadget Life.
We concluded that we will see the Nokia N96 and Nokia N78 as well as an S60 touch device. However, I think Nokia will surprise us tomorrow. Only a few more hours to find out!

Hi all! Andrew here. Bringing you a review of the Nokia N810 tablet in case you were ever in the market for such a gadget. Having owned the N800, I can tell you that the N810 is no sidegrade, and definitely takes it a step up.

The first thing I noticed about the N800 when I first bought it was the beautiful touch screen. The N810 follows suit with an even brighter screen. Physically, the N810 is actually small enough to be pocket sized, it is smaller than its predecessor the n800 and now dons a full qwerty keyboard. This already takes away the Nokia N800’s greatest downfall (also making the Nokia N810 a great blogging tool).

Nokia N810 flat on a desk.

In terms of functionality, the Nokia N810 definitely delivers. The tablet being a device an internet communication device improves on the formula by adding a number of new additions. Like the previous tablets, it has an RSS reader can save all your favorite feeds. However, what one will first notice the first time they launch the browser is that we now have a Mozilla powered browser. Armed with the newest flash plugin and a fast wireless or bluetooth tethered connection, you can view just about any webpage, play java games, and more importantly, watch videos from Youtube and other embedded videos. All of this, in large widescreen glory.

Where the Nokia tablets really shine are with the software that the open source platform supports. Everything from PIM, messaging, to even emulators can be installed on the tablet, making it powerful multipurpose gadget. The keyboard also adds another dimension to the device, as now email, blog posts, instant messaging are no longer a chore as it is on full touchscreen devices (read : N800, iPhone, HTC Touch etc). The keyboard is satisfactory, the keys are wide apart, most people should be able to type with relative ease, however the keys are too soft in my opinion, and seem to not offer enough feedback. Also the top row of keys seem to be too close to the to the edge of the screen making it slightly annoying to type at times.

Like the previous versions of the Nseries internet tablets, this supports internet calls, webcam like video conferencing (the camera is now on the front face!), and GPS/Maps. The media player gets the job done and the speaker is clear and relatively loud. Wifi is a necessity with the N810 unless you wish to bluetooth tether it to your cell phone, which I have done in the past to fill in the gaps between where I had wifi.

All in all, if you are looking for a device that is compact, media rich and has an excellent browser (without being a phone or laptop) you owe it to yourself to check out the Nokia N810.

I use the Mobile Admin plugin for Wordpress to moderate incoming comments and respond while I am away from the Macbook Pro. Mobile Admin adapts the WordPress admin UI to be more friendly to mobile devices, specifically phones. With Mobile Admin, you can also write posts directly from the Nokia N95 or other phones. I think writing a post on the N95’s keypad will be time-consuming and choose not to do it.

Ewan MacLeod from SMS Text News currently asked a developer to create a Wordpress S60 client. I’ll be closely watching its progress and see how useful it may be for me on the go without the Macbook Pro.

I played with an Nokia N800 before and the Nokia N810 was definitely thinner. I’m interested in what else Ryan has to say about the tablet. It might tempt me back to giving it another try.
