Rumor: Nokia N85 Is The Next Video Flagship

The Nokia N96 is not even out yet, but several people are already excited about a rumored Nokia N85 scheduled for summer 2009. Combining info from different sources, we get an almost clear idea of what it may look like.

Nokia N85 is not about photo. It is all about video experience. It comes with 5 megapixel camera. It is smaller than the Nokia N96, but with WQVGA resolution (4??x240 pixels resolution). The most interesting claim is that it looks like a Nokia N93 packed into a different form factor. Sources: Teo from Symbian-Freak, Eldar from Mobile-Review, David from Electronic Pulp.

The photo above was found in Nokia’s patent applications last December. Is that the Nokia N85? That form factor looks really interesting! A lot more exciting the Nokia N96.

Rumor: No Nokia N93/N93i Successor Up To 2010

A reliable source said that there are no phones with the Nokia N93’s form factor in the future up to 2010. I’m a little surprised because I imagined Nokia’s next video flagship phone to be another flip-and-swivel attention grabbing phone like the Nokia N93.

No more transforming flip phones like the Nokia N93i?

I have not owned any other phone that received more attention than the Nokia N93. It is unusual, but that’s what made it cool. It is thick and heavy though compared to the newer Nseries phones. I’m a little disappointed hearing about this, but sliders like the Nokia N96 and candybars like the Nokia N78 seem more practical.

Sighting: Nokia N93s Used For Surveillance in Bourne Ultimatum

I just watched Bourne Ultimatum and noticed that the Nokia N93 made several appearances in the movie. The Nokia N93’s were used by the CIA agents to transmit live footage to headquarters. That was cool! And yes, it can be done in the real world with by installing Comvu Pocketcaster on your Nokia NSeries phone.

While it’s not exactly what was used in Bourne Ultimatum, the same idea exists in using PocketCaster. It lets you broadcast live video from your phone. However, you are going to need a fast connection like WiFi or 3G to be able to transmit the videos.

Vlog: Riding with the Nokia N95

For the third episode of MarkTV, I attached my Nokia N95 to the sunroof and recorded my drive on Grand Central Parkway. It’s been a while since the last episodes, so to reintroduce you to the show, MarkTV shows you what I can do with my Nokia phones. Try doing this with your iPhone… oops, the iPhone can’t even do videos! Check out the blooper at the end.

You can also view this video in DVD-like quality.

Materials used: GPS mount and Nokia N95. That’s it. Instead of mounting to my dashboard, I used the glass surface of my sunroof and pointed the camera of the Nokia N95 towards the front. I got the idea of doing this from watching YouTube user chipko’s videos using his Nokia N93 showing his drive. Pretty cool!

I’ve made several videos already, but I am calling this episode 3 because I want to continue with this format and style from now on. To check all my created videos, just check the “MarkTV” category on my blog. They can also be seen in my YouTube and Blip.TV accounts.

P.S. About the iPhone comment… I don’t hate it. I actually loved it after playing with one yesterday. No way in hell it will replace my Nokia N95, though.

Vlog: Can The Nokia N95 Stand on its Own?

I decided to see for myself if the Nokia N95 can stand on its own after watching Carol Chen’s aka Cybette’s video. I didn’t really try doing it before, so I was surprised that my N95 was actually able to stand still on its side and Cybette’s couldn’t. See the video to find out why.

I was cringing when I saw her N95 drop on its side and the front with the “thud” sounds. I was more careful with mine, making sure I don’t drop it too fast. My video response is below, which is by the way taken with the Nokia N93.

This video was really to practice video-editing, playing with Final Cut. I hope you didn’t think it was too geeky doing this test (but I know that’s already too late!).

Review: Nokia DT-22 Universal Tripod

I will review the Nokia Universal Tripod DT-22. Now that our phones can handle exceptional pictures and video, it is almost a necessity to have something that will keep our phone steady to capture precious or random moments. Others have used homemade do-it-yourself tripods, but the DT-22 makes sure your expensive cameraphone is officially secure in place (and look better).

Note: All the pictures below are taken with the Nokia N95 and the Nokia N93.

The Nokia DT-22 Universal Tripod consists of two parts: the legs and the adapter. Together, they make a portable tripod easy to carry around. If you already own bigger tripod, the adapter can be attached for more flexibility.

The adjustable legs let you choose the perfect height. It is also great for adjusting on uneven surfaces. The legs also have a twisting lock and a pop-out to make sure the legs don’t fall unexpectedly. For added stability, the bottom of the legs consist of rubber so the tripod doesn’t slide on slippery surface.

The adjustable adapter ensures compatibility with several devices. When I first heard about the DT-22, I thought it was only made for the Nokia N93. From a previous post, I tried putting my Nokia N95 on and found out it fits just fine. On the bottom of the packaging it clearly says, “For the N95. N93, N80, N73, N72, N70, and other compatible devices.”

The Nokia DT-22 tripod is very useful! Don’t you hate it when you want to take a picture of your friends, but one will always be missing because someone has to take the picture? Using a tripod for video blogging is also great. Just lay the tripod on your desk and you are ready to be the next LonelyGirl15!

It is hard to find because not many sellers have it in stock. If you take a lot of pictures and videos on your Nokia Nseries phone, make sure to buy one now before they are totally gone.

Vlog: From Computer to Nokia N95 to TV

I made a video showing one of the many capabilities of the Nokia N95. I transferred a TV episode I had on my 24-inch iMac to the Nokia N95, then connected it to the TV-out with my television. If you haven’t done this yet, you will be surprised at the quality of the video. I’m sorry the limited lighting on this video did not portray it accurately.

The episode was converted to the N95 using my conversion guide. The video was filmed with a Nokia N93. Notice that the telephone number was blurred out? I did that with Final Cut Pro… I’m slowly learning more about editing video!

The Nokia Blog’s Nokia N93 Goes to eBay

I just put my Nokia N93 up on eBay. This post will be proof to potential buyers on that I am the owner of this eBay listing. I also used the Nokia tripod DT-22 to take all of the pictures in macro mode. Any photographers know that a steady hand is not enough for taking good pictures of objects within a few centimeters. Tip: If you are taking close-up pictures for eBay using your Nokia N95 phone, select macro mode in the camera with the shutter set to 10 seconds and place it securely on a tripod or other placeholders. This will ensure sharp pictures because there is no possibility of camera shake.

I will show you how you can convert your favorite movies and TV episodes from your computer to watch right on the Nokia N95’s default movie player. The Nokia N95 supports H.264 playback. H.264 in simple words: high quality videos at small file sizes. Enough techno blabber! Find out how right now!

There seems to be a lot of new Nokia N95 owners, so this guide comes in perfect timing. It will make third-party programs like SmartMovie obsolete. This is also quick and pretty simple. Here we go:

Download the latest Quicktime.

Open the movie or TV episode in Quicktime. If the file does not play on your computer, it means you are missing a codec or component. For the purpose of this guide, I will not get into that part of the topic.

Go to File -> Export. Select “Movie to MPEG-4″ then click Options. Copy the settings in the screenshot below.

Then click Video Options.. and copy the settings in the screenshot below.

That’s it! Just hit OK and save. Depending on your computer and the size of the file, it may take some time. For my sample, I converted a 350MB TV episode to 240MB. Transfer it to your “My Movies” folder in your memory card when it finishes.

Summary of video settings:
File Format: MP4
Video Format H.264
Data Rate: 700 kbits/sec
Optimized for: Download
Image Size: 320 x 240 QVGA
Turn On: Aspect Ratio using Letterbox
Key Frame: Automatic
Restrict Profile(s) to: Main AND Baseline
Encoding Mode: Best Quality (Multi-pass)

You can play around with the settings yourself, but these are the settings for the best quality that the Nokia N95 can playback for you. I also tested these settings in my Nokia N93 and it also worked fine.

Videoblogging Encoding Settings for the Nokia N95, N93, and N93i

I will show you how you can optimize videos from the Nokia N95, Nokia N93, and Nokia N93i for videoblogging. These Nokia phones are also camcorders that shoot DVD-like quality. That means high quality video-recording that fits in your pocket. However, if you are new to videoblogging, you will find out that even just 6 minutes of video from your Nseries phone can go more than 100MB of space, the max limit in popular video sharing sites, YouTube and blip.TV.

Other bloggers have recommended how to shoot videos with your Nseries phones, but I’ll share what you can do AFTER for sharing your videos with friends, family, or whoever you want on the web.

I can be technical and explain how amazing H.264 encoding is and how it helps increase the quality of your videos while decreasing the file size, but I’ll stick to what’s more important: the settings. Lowering your file size will make it faster to upload your videos to YouTube or blip.TV and enable you to fit more footage.

After editing your movie (I’ll write a more detailed HOW TO: Make movies with Your Nokia Nseries guide later on), choose export in whatever movie editing software you have and select these settings in the software used:

The Quick Way

Export: Movie to Quicktime Movie
Use: LAN/Intranet

…or the Advanced Way

Save the original movie file or your movie from iMovie, Final Cut, or your preferred software with these settings:

Format: Quicktime
Compression Type/Codec: H.264
Frame Rate: 29.97 fps
Size: 640 width x 480 height
Key Frames: Every 150 Frames
Frame Reordering: Yes
Multi-Pass: Yes
Data rate: 1405 kbits/sec
Optimized for: Streaming
Audio Format: AAC
Audio Sample Rate: 48.000 kHz
Audio Channels: Stereo (Mono for the Nokia N95)
Audio Bit rate: 128 kbps

Using the settings above, an original 5 and a half minute video from the Nokia N93 with a file size of 117MB was converted to only 65.7MB, but I’ll still show you that the video also improved. Look at the comparisons below.

Large file size is probably the most common concern uploading to the web, but I just showed you how you can optimize your videos so that you can decrease the file size, fit more footage, and even improve the quality of your videos!

If you would like to share videos longer than 10 minutes it is recommended to decrease the resolution of the video. You should not have videos longer than 10 minutes though because the regular audience will not have the patience to sit and watch the whole thing. As a general guideline for H264 encoding, it is recommended:

For a frame size of 640 x 480, choose a data rate of 1,500 Kbps.
For a frame size of 320 x 240, choose a data rate of 700 Kbps.

With my current Nokia N93 capable of DVD-quality video, I like to keep my videos at the original resolution of 640×480 so my readers can see the phone’s capabilities.

I do not have the Nokia N95, but I’m sure the file size will even be lower because it only records in Mono audio: one channel audio. I would love to test one out for encoding videos.

Sighting: Nokia 5300 in New Fall Out Boy Music Video

The Nokia 5300 makes a few appearances in Fall Out Boy’s latest music video of their latest single, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs. The Nokia 5300 will now be getting more popular because I’m expecting this video to be playing a lot on MTV. Also worth mentioning this video on YouTube received plenty of honors already. Check it out.

You can see the Nokia 5300 appear at 0:40, 1:40, and 2:04. It’s funny that some people commented that it looks like a 4 minute advertisement for Nokia.

It’s not uncommon to see Nokia phones in Music Videos. The Nokia 5300 was also spotted with Danity Kane. Now we just have to tell Pharrell to update his Nokia N93 to a Nokia N95.

My buddy Ninong Brown held my Nokia N93 and his Nokia N80 together to video my embarrassing 1-round KO loss playing Wii Boxing. You can compare the two videos to really see the evolution of video in Nokia’s phones. Without a doubt you already know which one is better, but find out by how much.

For this video test, both videos are unedited. I only cut out what happened afterwards (I lost again). I kept all original encodings the same.

You can tell that the video on the Nokia N93 is a LOT better but we all already knew that. What’s the purpose of this test? The videos were taken in a real life situation. Phones are so much more convenient to carry than bulky digital camcorders. If we see something we like to share, all we have to do is flip out our phones. Both were capable enough to do that, but the Nokia N93 comes out as the winner. It’s just too bad that you see me get KO’d.

From Nokia N93 To Nokia N95: Upgrade or Not?

The Nokia N95 is just around the corner and after reading a few articles, there are a few things that make me think twice before doing an upgrade. I’ll list down what’s important to me and conclude whether or not it is recommended for other N93 owners with similar interests upgrade to the Nokia N95.

Thanks to Paul Whitaker, I noticed that the Nokia N95 only supports mono audio. While this is not a dealbreaker for me, going to the N95 from the N93, I will be losing the stereo recording. Since I upload most of my videos on YouTube, the audio are converted to mono anyway so other YouTube users will not be affected. However, watching the original videos on a computer with 2 speakers, or a TV, we lose audio depth. You can find out more about mono vs. stereo by BCAE.

Sample Nokia N95 photos have been showing up with purple hue. They say that firmware updates will fix this, but after hearing the same thing about how Nokia will fix the noise on Nokia N93 pictures, I will not get my hopes up. Fortunately, the pictures can be fixed with software on our computers.

Nokia N95 has GPS… the Nokia N93 doesn’t. However, My-Symbian revealed in their Nokia N95 review that the built-in GPS receiver will initially only work with the included Nokia Maps. This is disappointing to me because I think TomTom is better, faster, and more usable than Nokia Maps.

Unfortunately, no other existing S60 3rd Edition GPS software is able to take advantage of the built-in receiver because all of them are ‘hardcoded’ to communicate with Bluetooth GPS devices via the Serial Port Profile.

Conclusion. So should I still upgrade to the Nokia N95? While the 3 factors above mention a few negative things, they are not that bad. Mono and Stereo are hardly noticeable through basic speakers, picture colors can be easily fixed, and I can stick with Nokia Maps until TomTom ports their software to use the GPS receiver on the Nokia N95. Nevertheless, I will be checking Fonegrabber or the Nokia N95 Price Check page for a trusted seller to have it in stock and still be one of the first few to buy it.

I’m sure I’m not the only Nokia N93 user feeling this way. Do you have a Nokia N93 and plan to upgrade to the Nokia N95? Let me know the reasons why or why you won’t upgrade.

Chasing the Storms with the Nokia N93

Nokia has given eight snowboarders the Nokia N93 to help them chase the perfect powder day – the type of day that happens once a year that keeps you energized on your mission to chase the storm. They launched the website, The Storm Chasers, to document their tour. They posted some videos up already with their phones.

I asked one of the chasers, Max Jenke, some questions. He told me about how the partnership with Nokia started. A few years ago Endeavor Snowboards produced some limited edition Nokia N Gage snowboards for the team. He says,

the industry marketing manager wanted to use a local company to help him make some promotional stuff. we had creative control on the project – they just wanted some great looking product. most of the guys in the company snowboard, so i think they were really stoked

I know it’s hard to capture footage while snowboarding, but with the Nokia N93, it makes it easier because of its size. I tried taking a video of my ski trip last month, but I took it slow. The team on the other hand are not afraid to use the phones to the limit.

our guys definitely put them to the test. but these have definitely held up more than the N90s that we had last year

Max says that the team are expecting to get the Nokia N93i and the Nokia N95 very soon. I can’t wait to see them use it action.

Vlog: Playing Taboo With The Nokia N93

My friends are always amazed at the video quality on my Nokia N93. We were playing Taboo on one of our game nights. Even under indoor lighting, the video looks great. I hope the Nokia N95 meets my video expectations when it comes out. Check out the video.

Nokia Announces smart2go (Nokia Maps)

Nokia announced this morning in a press release and a webcast the Smart2Go application which is also known as Nokia Maps for free download. It will be the pre-installed navigation software that will come with the most anticipated Nokia phone of the year, the Nokia N95, but can also be used by ~~other Nokia S60 devices~~ Nokia S60 3rd Ed. devices. It will also be available for a diversity of other operating systems such as Windows Mobile 5 and Linux, in the future.While maps and routing is free, turn-by-turn navigation requires a subscription fee. How much is the navigation service? If you check the presentation slides, the sample prices for a navigation service in Germany is:

1 week: 6,49 Euro
1 month 7,99 Euro
1 year 59,99 Euro
3 years 69,99 Euro

Another cool tool is that while you can download maps directly to your phone, they also give the MapLoader application for your PC (grrr… no Mac support!!!) so you can manage all the maps in your computer before installing into your phone.I went to the smart2go website to try to download for my Nokia N93 but it is still not available. I am excited to use this software because it as almost like a preview to using the Nokia N95.

Nokia N95 Takes Better Pictures Than The Nokia N93

Steve Garfield took pictures with his Nokia N95 under poor lighting conditions and concludes that the N95 takes better pictures than the Nokia N93. Although he had problems with the focus and shutter time, he says it may be because he has a pre-production version. He also writes,

the N95 will make you very popular at parties. The meeting I was at was all about new software solutions in technology. One attendee told me that seeing the N95 was the highlight of his evening.

The Nokia N93i is Now Available

The Nokia N93i is finally available to the market. The first price a seller on eBay offered USD $945. That is about USD $100 less than how much the Nokia N93 initially sold but stil expensive. Keep in mind the suggested price for the Nokia N93i is 600 Euros (USD $775), so expect the prices to drop as more sellers get their shipment. Review: Using Vox with the Nokia N93

I will review the Vox application in my Nokia N93. The Nokia N93i will be the first Nseries device to have the application built in, but existing Nseries phone owners can use Vox now by running a configuration file. Vox members are able to upload videos and full size photos directly from the camera or Image Gallery application. However I can only think of one scenario when I’ll need to use this service.

I can cross out Vox for sharing pictures. I already have Flickr embedded in my Gallery that allows me to upload pictures and quickly tag them. I also already uploaded a lot of pictures in my Flickr account and do not need another image hosting company. If you have an Nseries phone like the Nokia N70, Nokia N80, Nokia N93, and Nokia N73 and still do not have Flickr installed, read the how-to over here.

For sharing videos, Vox becomes useful but falls just a little short. I quickly signed up for an account and tried uploading a short video clip from my ski trip. Surprisingly, once the upload finished from my phone, the video showed up in my Vox blog page right away! I’m so used to waiting for YouTube to process my videos before it becomes available to the public.

Even though Vox does not let their users easily copy and paste the video files, it’s easy to grab the code by viewing the page’s html source. One of my video uploads on Vox can be seen below. It’s a clip from my Nokia N93 at Silver Spurs in New York City. Probably the biggest burger I’ve eaten in my life.

Conclusion

Vox makes it a lot easier to upload videos directly from an Nseries phone, but they need to broaden their audience to existing bloggers. I do not like the fact that Vox does not make an html code easily accessible to copy and paste to other pages. Other services like YouTube and Blip.TV gives their users the code so they can easily embed the uploaded videos in their own blogs or in their MySpace profiles. I want to be able to quickly share the videos I uploaded in Vox here at the Nokia blog.

Vlog: Annual Ski Trip III at the Poconos

I took the Nokia N93 to the mountains for some video. In the last three years my friends and I have gone skiing, we had digital cameras to take pictures. This year, I had my Nokia N93 to capture movies that pictures cannot fully show. I did not want to lose or break the phone, so I only took it out at the easier slopes. I managed to get a few action shots… including Nelson wiping out.

While all the cool Nokia/Symbian bloggers like Darla Mack, Paul Whitaker, Stefan, Rafe, and Lonely Bob were warm at CES, I was busting my ass skiing and snowboarding in Camelback, Pennsylvania. I did not bring a laptop, but thanks to the WiFi connection, I was able to use the Nokia N93’s web browser to keep up to date.

The Nokia blog just added a new Nokia price check section. Readers who read the blog can now also check the lowest prices of the latest Nokia phones like the Nokia N93, Nokia N73, Nokia N91, etc. The prices are sorted from the lowest to highest Buy It Now prices taken from eBay. From experience, eBay usually have the lowest prices because of the massive amount of sellers competing with each other.

The Nokia blog’s Price Check section is automatically updated whenever a seller comes with a lower price. The list also goes though a filter to make sure the search results show the correct phone and not its accessories, like faceplates or leather covers. Jaymos World With The Nokia N93

Jaymos started a blog about his new Nokia N93 and his initial posts already got me hooked. He updated the firmware to version 20.0.058 after watching my review. With this firmware, he can now play games that needed pressing multiple buttons at the same time (not possible with previous firmware). He is also amazed of the portability and the video quality the Nokia N93 features.

You don’t see people on an everyday basis at work, in the clubs or wherever you may frequent with a camcorder or digital camera.

Alex Wrege used his Nokia N93 to capture the nice sunny weather at Fort Myers beach. Currently, you can’t have this kind of video quality from any other Nokia phones! I also can’t think of ANY other phone that can handle this kind of video quality, but I’m sure the European and Asian readers here at the Nokia blog can list a few. I really enjoy capturing videos with the Nokia N93 and editing with Final Cut afterwards. This phone has the potential to make anyone into a filmmaker. I’m starting to learn more about video editing as a hobby and I’m excited that the Nokia N93 makes it so much easier. Another video to add to my creations is captured during one of our game nights playing Jenga. Check it out.

Video was taken indoors at night, but the Nokia N93 was still able to capture excellent footage. While not great for professionals, it is perfect for home videos. So get rid of your huge cartridge-tape camcorders and get a digital camcorder that also works as a phone… the Nokia N93!

Vlog: Clipse Performance at Show Nightclub

The Nokia N93 is the perfect phone to carry around because it lets you capture unexpected events in video at very good quality. This past weekend, I was at Show Nightclub for some fun and drinks when suddenly Clipse took the stage to perform a few songs from their new album, Hell Hath No Fury. I’m not a huge fan of rap, but I’ve always liked the beats coming from Clipse’s producers, Pharrell & the Neptunes. I was not expecting anyone I know, but once I recognized the beats, I took the Nokia N93 out and swiveled into video mode right away.

Do you notice the sound quality? If you’ve listened to concert videos recorded by Nokia N93 owners a few months ago, the sound gives a “whooshing” noise in loud environment. For example, check this Aerosmith video taken 3 months ago. I’ve already updated the Nokia N93 firmware twice, currently version 20.0.058. I think Nokia fixed the audio recording in the latest firmware because I did not have any of the whooshing sound in the video. I’ll test it out some more.

I captured some videos with my Nokia N93 playing the new Cranium Pop 5. You’ve probably seen the commercial on TV. We wondered why rounds took so long, but we finally figured out the right way to play after reading more of the instructions. Check it out.

I filmed this with the Nokia N93 and edited with Final Cut Studio. Since winter break is coming and classes will be over in a couple of weeks, expect some more short videos from me.

I hope that the Nokia N95 is as good as the Nokia N93 at capturing videos because I love the video quality of my Nokia N93. Release dates for the Nokia N95 is blurry right now and Engadget notices it may come out as late as March ‘07. We’ll reserve that discussion for another post. Enjoy the video!

Jin Khang Ong from MobileBurn reviews the Nokia N93. He thinks the Nokia N93 is a fantastic phone, but is very bulky and has a slow camera interface. However, he still highly recommends it for its imaging and connectivity capabilities. His reviewed Nokia N93 firmware was from the version 11.0.034, but the latest version 20.0.058, which I recently reviewed, has improved the camera’s shot-to-shot time by 2.17 seconds.
