You can’t wait for the Nokia N97 or the E75? Why not get a really cheap N95 8GB or E71 for now? They are currently being sold on Dell SB at a 25% discount, but use the stackable coupon 2J0TX0Z5NW22MB to bring the discount total up to 33%. This makes the N95 8GB and E71 on sale for $365 and $270 respectively. Act fast because the deal expires in 24 hours.

I’ve already forgotten about the Nokia N95 8GB, but this is certainly the lowest yet for the Nokia E71.
When Nokia started to ship their Nseries devices with high Megapixel Cameras, a new era of photography was started, and a whole new crowd of photographers carrying mobile phones instead of professional cameras, stated to appear. I was among this new generation of photographers and my specific interest was pointed at nature. Here’s a quick guide on Nature photography which might help other Mobile Nature photographers.

I always loved to snap the beauty of my surroundings, scenery, little creatures, and even the plants they have lot to show off in detail. So I started this with my Nokia N80 and then went on to the Nokia N95 8GB, and now with the Nokia N82. When I started doing Nature photography, especially animals, my readers kept asking me again and again, how to shoot them without scaring them. Read on for my tips.

Limitations. First of all we have to understand that what we use here is a Mobile phone but not a professional SLR. We have to have some measure on our limits. Since we cannot facilitate the shooting with an optical zoom, when doing mobile photography there are certain types of shots that we cannot afford. We cannot snap any subjects which are relatively small in size and far away from our position, like birds on top of trees. But with the Macro mode available in Nseries cameras there is lot to explore, plenty of set ups can be discovered even in a small background. So these are the simple tips I follow in photographing the Nature.

Yield the best of natural light

Natural light is the best lighting you can have, no matter what type of camera you use, so same applies for the mobile phones. With the Natural light you can always have different shades thus you get different effects for the same subject when shoot in different angles.

Early morning is the best time to shoot, as you get perfect amount of light from the rising sun and you always get the lush freshness in the environment giving life to your photographs. Also you can try doing some shooting in the evening too, but in the middle of the day there is certain amount of warn-off effect in every aspect of nature due to the heat and also the light from the sun is too bright, may result the images to show a white washed effect. This depends on what country you live.

Using Macro Mode

For close-ups macro mode can really change the look of an image. It results in great amount of tiny details that sometimes even we don’t notice with our naked eyes. On N80 there is a mechanical macro switch with fixed focus which gives easy triggering but lacks the autofocus feature. But on latest Nseries devices you can use the Macro mode with autofocus, so you have a range of distance to get close to your subjects.

Shooting in the Macro mode require some practice. If you are new you won’t get the best at the first shot, but after trying several times you will learn how far you should be away from your subject to collect most of its details.

Turn off the Camera Sound

The camera sound is the most annoying thing to deal with, when it comes to photograph animals. There is no use at the end, how silent you approach the target, if the camera sound chase off your subject in the first click. So we have to mute it. In some phones activating the silent profile or turning off the warning tones would do the job, but for the others you gotta hack it to mute the camera sound.

Be Patient

In nature photography you must maintain certain level of discipline and you gotta be patient. You have to train yourself to stay still and maintain silence if you want to get close to animals. You also need to be quick because you will need to move swiftly along with the subject without making much noise. If the subject notices your presence, you can still carry on, but the most important thing is you shouldn’t pose any threat. Wild animals are very cautious and vigilant. They will get scared if you try to interfere with their surroundings.

Try to show them that you are not there to chase them away, and also never try to touch them or make them move with force. Always keep in mind that if you are dealing with untamed wild animals, you you have to keep your distance. Especially if you are fascinated with snakes.

Final Thoughts

So as you read this little guide, you will see there isn’t much specifically written related to mobiles. The Nseries cameraphones are getting closer and closer to professional cameras, though it still has a long way to go. Take a look at more of my Nature photos above with the flash slideshow. Head to the blog if it’s not visible in your RSS reader.

I’ve also started a Mobile Photography section over at Symbian Stories dedicated to mobile photographers. Submit your photos and I will post all the photos I receive (If they are good enough). Every Friday there will be a blog post with the best 3 photos.

You can click on the photos and check the properties to make sure I am telling the truth. I think the Nokia N85’s picture looks better than the N96, but the Nokia N82 is still definitely Nokia’s photo flagship.

One of the features the Nokia N85 has over the Nokia N95 8GB and the Nokia N96 is its OLED display. It reproduces sharper and brighter colors with better battery consumption. I want to show you how much better the Nokia N85 is at light time-out and power saver time-out.

Nokia N96, N85, N95 8GB at full brightness

Usually when you don’t touch any buttons after 15 seconds, the screen brightness dims. After 30 seconds, the phones go into power saver. Take a look at the differences at how these 3 phones handle these time-outs.

Light Time-Out

After 15 seconds of inactivity the screen dims and the image above shows how the three phones appear. You see a hint of some image on the Nokia N95 8GB and Nokia N96. Tilting the phones gives you more visibility. Those who already own these phones know what I’m talking about. Now take a look at the Nokia N85. Even at lower brightness, you still see whatever is displayed on-screen.

Power Saver

After 30 seconds of inactivity, the phones go into power saver. You see a hint of the date and time on the Nokia N95 8GB, while the screen on the Nokia N96 does not have an option to display date or time defaulting to just turning off the display. You can tilt the Nokia N95 8GB to see the time better, but it is permanently illuminated on the Nokia N85.

Thoughts

This is just a minor detail, but it’s one of many details of improvements the Nokia N85 has over the Nokia N96 and Nokia N95 8GB.

One more thing. Take a look at the pictures again. The phones all hold the same calendar appointments and To-do list, but did you notice that the FP2 devices (N96 + N85) actually display the to-do notes instead of displaying “2 to-do notes not done.”

Full reviews of Nokia N85 and Nokia N96 coming soon so stay tuned.

I’ve been playing with the Nokia N85 for a little while, looking for changes from my previous phones like the Nokia N95 and Nokia E71 running the older S60 3rd edition FP1. I’ll list the first 3 new settings that stood out.

Transitions and Animations

The menu transitions and animations are off by default. The setting to turn it isn’t that obvious to find and buried through numerous submenus. To turn it on, go to Tools – Settings – General – Personalization – Themes – General – Options – Theme Effects – ON. Whew! I can’t believe how hard that was to find!

Access Point Priorities

New to Feature Pack 2 is the ability to prioritize access points. In plain english, it means the phone can automatically use your Wifi connection before using your network’s data when trying to access the internet. You can set this up at Tools – Settings – Connection – Destinations – Internet – Options – New access point. You can add your home, office, or work wifi as priorities before the phone can start using the carrier.

Power Saver on Nokia N85 vs Nokia N95 8GB

Power Saver Date Display

Currently only on Nokia N85, you can illuminate the time and date permanently during power saver, instead of using backlight dim on the other phones. On most phones, you have to press a button to see the time. You can see it is more visible on the Nokia N85. This setting can be found at Tools – Settings – General – Personalization – Themes – Power Saver – Date.

If you are in a area well covered with 3G internet speed, you might want to force your Nokia phone to stay on the fast 3G connection instead of automatically switching to the slower EDGE. Some people might prefer to do this if their phone disconnects when the phone is trying to switch between the two. I’ll show you how to do it.

Nokia N95 8GB NAM Using 3G Only

The trick (not a trick… more like a setting) is to change the network mode to UMTS, instead of Dual Mode. You can access this at Settings -> Phone -> Network -> Network Mode -> UMTS. I live in New York City and we’re blanketed with 3G coverage so I’m fine leaving it on UMTS only.

Thanks to Erick from Mobile World Innovation for pointing this out to me. Is this something that you have been using all along? Do you recommend this setting? Let me know.

I have some free time before the Maemo Summit gets started so I made a quick video in front of the Reichstag building with my thoughts on Berlin and bicycles. A lot of people here use them and I noticed one major difference from New York City. The bike lanes are mostly on sidewalks… not the roads!

Note: Video below might not be visible in RSS readers.

I’ve been exploring around Berlin Mitte, seeing plenty of historical places accessible just by walking. I didn’t realize until recently how easy it is to use the public transportation here, so I’ll be going further away tomorrow to check other areas.

There’s one thing I absolutely hate here though. Internet access not very easy to get. The hotel I’m staying at and the cell phone carriers charge a lot of money. While a T-mobile dealer sold me a SIM that’s supposed to be 5 Euros/day flat rate, it stopped working only after a few hours! I’ll try to be nice when I see him tomorrow.

When I read that the Rugby Ralph Lauren store in Union Square New York City were using QR codes, I had to check it out myself. QR codes are basically barcodes that compatible phones can read and redirect to a website URL. The cool thing about this is that the barcode reader comes pre-installed with the latest Nokia phones like the Nokia N95 8GB I was carrying.

The only QR codes I found at the Rugby Ralph Lauren store were at their doors. It read:

We are pleased to present shopping right from your phone. visit m.rugby.com or scan our QR code to shop new styles and check out the news room, Rugby’s blog.

Scanning the barcode forwarded me to their online store in mobile format. You can add stuff to the cart and checkout directly from the phone. I guess it’s useful if you happen to pass by the store after business hours and see something that you wanted at the window.

If you want to see where the QR code takes you, click on the photo above to enlarge it and use use the scanner. According to Nokia, the Nokia N82, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB, E66, E71, E90 or 6220 Classic have the Nokia barcode reader preinstalled on your device.

I personally wouldn’t take my credit card out right there on the sidewalk at night, but maybe I’m not seeing the main purpose? I was hoping the store had QR codes inside that forwarded me directly to specific clothes. It should give me an option to save the cart where I can purchase later when I get home if they didn’t have my size at the store. That would have been more useful for me.

Do you think the QR codes implemented by the Rugby store is useful? Let me know in the comments below.

In my latest video, I show that you can use bluetooth headsets with Nokia phones for videos. I used a Jawbone with the Noise Assassin paired to a Nokia N95 8GB running Qik for video streaming. I think this is a great mobile setup for press or bloggers without an assistants who intend to do interviews.

Note: Video below might not be visible in some RSS readers.

My purpose was to show that bluetooth headsets can work as wireless microphones for our video powerhouse Nokia phones like the Nokia N95 8GB or the upcoming Nokia N85 or Nokia N96. This demo is a little extreme since you want your subject closer the camera for interviews… not two rooms away like I showed in the video.

On our way back, when looking at Google maps, I noticed a round structure nearby. I thought it must be something worth taking a look so we walked towards it. Using the GPS on the Nokia N95 8GB, Google maps showed us our location and the arrow of the direction we were walking towards.

A while back, I wrote about a treasure hunt involving tickets to a nine inch nails concert. I didn’t get tickets that time, but a new opportunity arose the Friday before the show. On the morning of July 18, the nine inch nails google earth kml file was updated. 25 more question marks appeared on the map. I frantically gathered myself and figured out how I would try to get to the closest locations.

Tickets found with the help of Nokia N800 and Nokia N95 8GB

I didn’t follow my own directions in getting the GPS locations from Google Earth to the N95 8GB NAM. I saved the locations as the default kmz file type, not the kml file needed for conversion. But I was in such a rush to figure out what I did wrong, I tried inputting the GPS coordinates manually. I checked google earth again and noticed the closest question mark went down. Time was slipping away fast.

Note: Thanks to commenter Zephrem, who found an open source application that converts all types of GPS data from one type to another. It is called ‘gpsbabel’ (gpsbabel.org) and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. This really would have come in handy that day.

Here’s a problem with the S60 GPS Data application. If you give it a destination, you can’t save it. If you try to save, it records your current position. I intended to input the coordinates and then export the location to Nokia or Google maps. But this method ended up failing.

Game On

I ended up calling a friend. He loaded up google earth while I drove to the next location. He directed me along the twisting roads of Beverly Hills to a park entrance. The clue read “Weight limit 3 tons”. At one point, the Nokia N95 8GB NAM lost its signal. I kept driving around frantically looking for signs that said 3 tons. I found 3 or 4 signs that read 3 ton limit along the road before my signal came back. Turns out I wasn’t there yet. My friend directed me further down the street to the entrance of a park that had the sign I was looking for. I looked behind it and found an envelope with a question mark on it. I let out a big laugh of triumph as I went over the letter and eyed my tickets for the show. A private dress rehearsal for the upcoming Lights in the Sky tour.

My friend asked me to find another pair for him, so I drove forward to the next closest location. The clue for this location read “Behind the mirror in the men’s bathroom. Be discreet.” I drove down Sunset Blvd towards Hollywood to find a place that he described with a red awning. I had to bum a quarter off a guy to park nearby. On my way to the destination, I tripped and sprained my ankle. The place turned out to be a very seedy looking gentleman’s club. Worse, it was closed.

nine inch nails tickets in the strip club

We decided to try the next location. This one read “you’ll know it when you see it”. On my way back to the car, I saw a meter maid and freaked out. To my relief, he only said I was parked a little too far forward and I he wouldn’t give me a ticket. I got the next place and had to climb a steep hill. I found a Christmas tree knocked over and little else. Seemed like someone got there already. I decided to go back to the gentleman’s club and hope someone might show up. On my way there, I ran out of gas. Luckily I had a spare gallon in the trunk.

There were nine inch nails tickets somewhere near that tree

I went back to the club and sat out back. I followed the nine inch nails fan forums with my Nokia N800 tethered to the N95 8GB NAM. Fans from outside of LA were excited while those in LA were frantic. They dug through mud, swam under bridges and wandered through cemeteries for tickets. There was a lot of confusion, since some of the question marks didn’t go down right away, so people kept looking at locations that may have already been pilfered.

Finally, this guy smoking a cigar showed up. Figuring he was the owner, I asked him if he was. Turns out he was a friend of the owner and that he would be meeting him there soon. I hated talking to him, he was a super macho jerk. Then the owner showed up. Very slimy looking dude. I explained to him my situation and he went in and fetched the tickets. I gave him many thanks and drove off quickly.

I then drove over to Santa Monica to give my friend her tickets. Then I went home. I spent the rest of the day following the excitement at the fan forums.

The Show

On the way to the show, I used google earth to find a market to get some snacks. Strangely, it missed a market that was across the street. As I waited in line, security came out and said no cameras. People asked about camera phones and they said they’re okay. Strangely, they never checked people for cameras, a few people ended up sneaking their cameras in anyway.

The show was phenomenal. The stage set up was incredibly impressive and the light show was spectacular. There were two giant screens that moved up and down, a large array of rotating lights set above another giant screen for a backdrop. The performances were great, a wonderful mix of new songs and old favorites.

Photos

The pictures I took barely capture the excitement. I tried fidgeting with the settings and ended up just using landscape mode. This mode works great since it wastes no time trying to focus. I made sure to time my pictures when there was plenty of light on stage. I also had a problem with a bouncer. Since I was standing so close to the stage, he kept giving me warnings about no cameras. Trying to be sneaky with my shots took a bit of effort. I really wanted to shoot video to QIK, but I had no chance with that bouncer around.

I suspect that the Nokia N82 has a better standby mode than the N95 8GB NAM. I often left the N95 8GB in standby so I could be ready to take another picture whenever I got the chance. The battery was very low after the show and I didn’t take many pictures. The N82 would be able to take 4 times as many. I had a great time and hope you enjoy the pictures I took.

We went to Red Bamboo restaurant for lunch today in Soho. I had my Nokia N95 8GB to take pictures of the fake-meat vegetarian food they offered.
Click on each photos to see the larger versions. You get to see the picture quality better.

Appetizers

For appetizers, we had salmon roll and buffalo wings. Both are made of fake meat… even the salmon. It tasted just like… salmon. The wings were definitely not close to looking like the real deal. They were still delicious, though.

Buffalo Wings

Entree

For the main entree, I had Thai Soy Beef Curry. It was spicy, but bearable. From rating of 1 for slightly spicy to 5 for volcanic spicy, it was around 2. It looks like beef, but you’ll know the difference when you start chewing. It doesn’t have that ‘meat juice.’ Nonetheless, I can’t complain about the taste. It was pretty good.

Sheila had Voodoo Sticks from the menu, which is grilled soy beef and peeper kabobs. She said it needed more seasoning. The portion is also smaller compared to our appetizers and the beef curry I ordered. We probably wouldn’t order it again.

Nokia N95 8GB Camera

I really enjoy using the Nokia N95 8GB’s camera. It’s a lot better than the Nokia E71, which is unfortunate because I love that QWERTY keypad. I don’t want to carry two devices, so it looks like I’ll be using the Nokia N95 8GB more often this week… until I start missing the E71 again.

It’s unbelievable what our phones can do. We know lots of people tweet what they’re doing on Twitter, but with the addition of a Nokia phone and the Qik service, you can SHOW people what you’re doing right now. This is possible by automatically letting Twitter know whenever you start streaming on Qik. I’ll show you how.

Example: automatic tweet from Nokia N95 8GB using Qik

What you need first: You’ll need a cameraphone (I’m using the Nokia N95 8GB as an example), a Twitter account, and a Qik account.

Setting It Up

Sign in to your Qik profile then click edit profile -> Networks. Twitter is the first one on the list. Click here if you can’t find it.

Click Edit this account then type your login info from Twitter.

On the message form, type what you want to show up as the first phrase on each ‘tweet.’ I chose live video for my account.

Check “Tweet all videos” so that videos automatically get announced on Twitter.

Click save changes. Done.

Setting it up

Using It

Open up Qik on your phone.

Optional, but I recommend setting a title for each stream. You can do this by Menu -> Stream Info -> Set Title.

When you’re ready just press “Stream.” Your twitter friends will be notified right away and can watch what you’re doing live instead of just reading about it.

Set the title on Qik. Here’s my tweet example for this post.

You are now ready to live stream and Tweet at the same time. Be careful with a live drunk tweet though… you might regret it in the morning.

During Day 1, the lady on the phone told me they don’t do repairs at the Flagship stores, but several others suggested I gave the store a call. So for Day 2, I gave the Nokia Flagship NY a call. Their telephone number is (212) 758-1980. The automated telephone system said, dial ‘305′ to get in touch with the care center. Nobody picked up the three times I tried, so I pressed ‘0′ to ask a sales rep. Continue following my experience with Nokia’s Warranty repair.

Common Nokia Store layout

The sales rep told me that they can take a look at the phone to see if they can fix it there. If not, they will send it out themselves for repair. That sounds good to me! I’ll be visiting the Nokia Flagship NY later this week so they can take a look at my Nokia N95 8GB. I’ll keep you updated.

Since there are only two Nokia Flagships in the United States, many will not have the same option as me. Continue reading to find what you need to do if your phone is still under warranty.

Go to https://www.nokiausa.com/A4410046 and follow the directions. At the end of the form, it will lead you to the instructions and address to send the phone to. Unlike my past experience with other companies’ warranty repair, Nokia does not provide a pre-paid box for shipping. You will have to pay for it yourself and make sure it is signed and insured.

For those who don’t know yet, there are faster ways to mark or select multiple images and videos on the Nokia/S60 Gallery. This is really useful for transferring files to your computer through bluetooth, or uploading multiple photos to Flickr and Ovi using the Nokia Share Online application.

After selecting the first photo, marking the rest is easier.

Fast Marking Option A

At the Gallery screen, go to one of the photos or videos you want to select, then press Options – Mark/Unmark – Mark. That photo is now marked (notice the check on the upper right corner).

Instead of going through the options again and again to select other files, press on the center key for each additional photo then Mark.

Fast Marking Option B

At the gallery screen, go to the first photo you want to select, then hold the pencil key (or # if you don’t have the pencil like the Nokia N82), with one of the direction keys.

It will mark all the files in the direction you go to.

I just noticed the down key on the direction pad of the Nokia N95 8GB harder to press. There might be some dust or speckle in there not letting me press down normally. It started bothering me so I decided to call Nokia Warranty for repair. Follow my experience to see how Nokia treats customers asking for warranty repair. Today is Day 1.

I called the Nokia USA Care Contact Center at 1-888-NOKIA-2U (1-888-665-4228) and followed the automated menu for repair. A lady who I can understand clearly answered the phone. She requested for my name, address, email, and the IMEI number. For those who need to find this, just press *#06# on the main menu of your phone.

She told me I was still within my warranty and that I needed to read the instructions online how to send the phone to them. She gave me the Nokia USA site url and navigated me through the site with the links to follow until I get to this page: https://www.nokiausa.com/A4410046

Blank page on Nokia Repair page.

I see nothing on the page for instructions to ship the phone to them. She then tells me that the page is currently updating and that I should check later tonight. Nokia should really have at least put a note on there letting us know they are updating the page.

It’s afternoon right now, so I’ll check later to see if the page gets updated. I’ll continue to write how my experience goes. I’ve read some horror stories and some good ones, so I hope this goes well. Wish me luck.

Update: The page has been fixed.

I went to Botanical Garden in the Bronx with Sheila today and took some macro pictures using the Nokia N95 8GB. I was intimidated by most of the people inside carrying all these giant DSLRs with tripods and lenses that were longer than foot, but you know what… I’m satisfied with the pictures I took and I did not have to carry anything outside my pockets.

That’s me taking photos with the Nokia N95 8GB

You can view my macro photos on Flickr, but feel free to browse using the flash slider below. Note: It might not be visible to some RSS readers.

The pictures taken with the Nokia N95 8GB were pretty good in my opinion. The 5 megapixels Carl Zeiss lens performed well for a phone. Of course, we can’t compare the quality to a Digital DLR on enlarged printed photos, but when uploaded and shared on Flickr like what I usually do, carrying a DSLR or another standalone digital camera becomes unnecessary.

You might also want to take a look at other photo samples I’ve taken with my Nokia N95 8GB while cherry picking and during a visit to a Buddhist Monastery.

Bluetooth can be turned on/off by pressing the * key on some Eseries devices like the Nokia E66 and Nokia E71. This shortcut is not available on the Nseries phones. By hacking your Nseries S60 phone, there’s a patch that lets you change the ‘0′ shortcut that usually opens the web browser. I’ve changed it to open the bluetooth menu on my Nokia N95 8GB. By turning on bluetooth only when you need it, you can save battery life and prevent unwanted file transfers.

Prerequsites

The first thing you need is a hacked Nokia S60 phone. You can find out how to do this by reading How To Hack Your S60 Phone guide.

The instructions below include editing the original ChangeBrowserOnKey.rmp patch by FCA00000 and uploading it to your phone. The modified code is then shown afterwards for the bluetooth shortcut. If you don’t want to read about the modification, just scroll all the way down for the end result. Note: The code’s formatting might not appear properly on RSS readers.

All I did was change the code so that the bluetooth menu opens. You can change it to anything you want as long as you know the application’s UID code.

Original Code by FCA0000

Below is the original code from FCA00000. Unmodified, pressing 0 will open Opera Mini if you have that installed. Continue reading below to change it to bluetooth instead. Notice that lines starting with ‘;’ are comments.

; *** ChangeBrowserOnKey0 1.0 ***
; *** Change Browser On Key '0' ***
; Author: fca00000 , fca00000-at-yahoo-dot-es
; Date: 2008.06.01
; Firmware: tested on N80 v 5.0719.02 . Might work on preFP1+FP1
;
; When phone is in the StandBy screen, pressing key '0' opens the default browser.
; With this patch, you can open any other application.
; You need to know its UID. Then, swap bytes to little-indian to get xxDIUxxx. In other words: 0x12345678 becomes 78563412
; For example:
; FExplorer UID = 0xE00012DF therefore xxDIUxxx=DF1200E0
; Calculator UID = 0x10005902 therefore xxDIUxxx=02590010
; OperaMini UID = 0x101D3166 therefore xxDIUxxx=66311D10 In this case, be aware that it takes some time (5 seconds) to open.
;
; then, the patch becomes:
; SnR:sys\bin\phone.exe:398D00100000000000000000:xxDIUxxx0000000000000000
; SnR:sys\bin\phone.exe:398D00100100000035000000:xxDIUxxx0100000035000000
; As far as I know, nothing is broken. But I decline all responsability, of course.
; Anyway, here it is. Enjoy
; end of ChangeBrowserOnKey0
SnR:sys\bin\phone.exe:398D00100000000000000000:66311D100000000000000000
SnR:sys\bin\phone.exe:398D00100100000035000000:66311D100100000035000000

Modified Code For Bluetooth

Below is the code for bluetooth shortcut. Since the The UID for bluetooth menu is 10005951, convert it to little-endian which results in 51590010. See how the conversion is done? You convert ABCDEFGH to GHEFCDAB. The only modifications done are in the last two lines of the original code.

Copy and paste this code to a new text file and make sure to save it with a .rmp extension.

Transfer it over to the E:/patches folder. Create it if it is not already there.

Enable it on ROMPatcher (see: How to Hack S60 phones) and set it to autorun so you won’t need to reactivate it after reboot.

You had this problem a long time ago with the original Nokia N95-1 and should have fixed it by now. Hopefully Nokia removes the purple tint problem with a firmware update.

Another Nokia E71 vs Nokia N95 8GB Color Comparison

Here’s another look at the color problem on the Nokia E71 by comparing it with the Nokia N95 8GB below. It is so obvious that I don’t even need to ask anyone to guess on this one.

	Anti-aliasing OFF vs ON

All you need to do is install FontRouter LT (I suggest to your memory card). Reboot and you’re done. Others use FontRouter to change the font type on their phones, but I’ll save that for another post.

There’s no icon to access the FontRouter application and there’s no need to change anything. If you’re still curious, you have to access and edit the e:\data\fonts\fontrouter.ini with a file explorer like X-plore. Reboot after making any changes. The setting that forces anti-aliasing is:

With anti-alias on, texts are more pleasing to read.

This tip also works for other phones with anti-aliasing turned off, but I don’t know which exact models those are. I’m confused why the Nokia N95 8GB’s fonts got altered after the firmware upgrade since I’m sure people like anti-aliasing turned on by default.

A topic I haven’t talked about here on the Nokia blog is about hacking S60. I never really understood it or saw the point, but I tried it today to remove that useless search tool on the main display of the Nokia N95 8GB. In essence, hacking your S60-powered phones like the Nokia Nseries and Eseries devices lets you install unsigned applications and apply patches. The bad thing about it is the changes applied by the patch needs to be reapplied every time the phone is restarted.

There’s no option to remove the Search on the active display. I don’t use it and don’t really want it on my main screen. I rather use the Google Search app.

So here are the pictures before and after the hack.

Hack Your S60

Want to hack your S60 Nokia phone? Go to Symbian-Freak’s Modding forums for instructions on hacking S60 and using the ROMPatcher. I have not found any other useful patches other than being able to remove the search from the active display screen. Maybe more useful patches will come out in the future. The changes are gone and need to be reapplied if you restart your phone. Is it worth it? Eh.

Yes, the Nokia E71 is targeted for business, but that can’t stop us from watching videos on it! Using my video conversion guide, I converted the trailer of Hancock and sent the same file to both the Nokia E71 and Nokia N95 8GB for a video playback comparison. Let’s see how they look.

Video Formats: Web High resolution, Mobile, Youtube.

For better comparison, I suggest watching the high resolution format. I honestly did not expect the video to play on the Nokia E71 but it surprisingly did. Here are the specs of the trailer that was played on both phones.

H.264

320×176 resolution

Stereo 44.1 kHz

23.98 FPS

Not bad, right? What’s cool is that I don’t have to tilt the phone to the side since the orientation of the Nokia E71 display is already in landscape.

This test, however is still not conclusive that the Nokia E71 is capable of playing all videos that plays well on the Nokia N95 8GB. The Nokia E71 struggles with 320×240 videos at 30fps unlike the Nokia N95 8GB. The Nokia E71 is more comfortable with 15fps. After finding this information out, I now have to make sure all my vlog mobile formats should be converted to 15fps from now on so Nokia E71 users can watch them on their phone.

Pictures do better when comparing sizes, so let’s take a look.

On paper, the difference is miniscule. On a picture, 0.34 inches difference is in fact, pretty big. Click on the images for larger view.

Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia E71, and Nokia N82 side by side.

You can see the biggest difference between the Nokia N95 8GB and the Nokia E71. I placed an American quarter on there for comparison as well. Don’t they appear to have the same width? This realization made me wish the Nokia N95 8GB featured a higher resolution.

Lawrence Farms Orchards was about an hour drive from New York City. I missed the cherry season last year so we made sure not to miss it this year. The farm had plenty of trees to pick from. Sheila had to pick a little faster because I was eating more cherries than putting them in the bucket! You can view the full Cherry picking Flickr set if you are unable to see the flash slideshow above.

Nokia N95 8GB vs. Nokia E71 Photos

The Nokia N95 8GB performed really well and the photos look a lot better than the current sample photos from Nokia E71. After looking at some current Nokia E71 sample photos online, I’m concerned about the purple/blue tint. It reminded me of the time I had the original firmware on the Nokia N95-1 taking pictures with blue or purple tint. I’ll explore more on this topic next week when I spend some time with the Nokia E71. Stay tuned.

I already use the applications except the Internet Radio, so I had to install it. It’s exactly what it sounds like: radio from the internet. There are lots of listed stations to choose from and the music is streamed through your phone’s data connection. The sound quality is automatically determined by the connection speed. Yet another cool app for our our phone!

As the cruise ported Montego Bay, there were really only a few places to tell the taxi drivers where to go: food at Margaritaville, shop in downtown, or bum at the beach. If you are traveling with family, prepare to spend money on small things such as beach entrance fees and taxis that charge per person.

The beach was clean and not bombarded with vendors. However, I was surprised the security guard was one of many that asked me if I wanted to smoke marijuana and sing with Bob Marley! LOL it’s like shopping for fake bags here in Chinatown New York City… the sellers find you.

Montego Bay was not bad, but I wouldn’t go back if given the choice. I would recommend future cruisers to do an excursion with the cruise ship instead of touring the island by yourself because there is little to see.

Video was taken with the Nokia N95 8GB and edited on iMovie 08. The Nokia N95 8GB captures 640×480 pixels resolution at 30 FPS.

What a relaxing vacation! I’m back from a week cruising the Caribbean. My first post back is a video from Stingray City at Cayman Islands captured with the Nokia N95 8GB. It is basically a shallow area in the middle of the ocean where tourists can swim with lots and lots of stingrays. Check it out.

We sailed to Stingray City on a catamaran sail 40 minutes away from the cruise ship. The sun was glaring, but the wind helped cool us off. I did not know anything about the place beforehand, but I was really glad we went on the excursion. I recommend anyone to visit this place. There were a lot of ships and tourists but plenty of stingrays swimming around.

I learned that the southern stingrays had poisonous tails, but they only use it as a last resort because once used, they’ll be defenseless for life. The stingrays live in the area because of the food that the tourist guides and fishermen bring them.

On my next vacation, I will make sure to bring an underwater kit for the Nokia N95 8GB so I can shoot some videos or pictures in the water. I tried using a ziplock bag, but it blurred the video and I was not sure of its effectiveness. If you have recommendations, please let me know.
