Mi Fan Festival 2019 makes cheap Xiaomi devices even cheaper

Xiaomi earlier today announced Mi Fan Festival 2019, a customer-focused event that’s only available to India residents.

Of note are discounts on Xiaomi products. including smartphones, speakers, USB cables, and more. Highlights include the Pocophone F1 for 4,000 rupees (~$58) off , 55-inch Mi LED TV 4 Pro for 9,000 rupees (~$130) off, and Redmi Note 6 Pro for 5,000 rupees (~$72).

Mi Festival 2019 also features a flash sale that sees the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Pocophone F1, Mi Soundbar, 32-inch Mi LED TV 4A Pro, and other products on sale for one rupee. The products are available each day of the sale at 2:00 PM local time, though quantities are expected to be extremely limited.

Accompanying the flash sales is a mystery box sale that offers boxes of product bundles for 99 rupees ($1.43). The bundled products are worth up to 2,400 rupees ($34.68), so would-be customers are saving quite a bit with the bundles.

Update: Pocophone F1 is getting a new Armoured version with 6GB of RAM

Xiaomi Pocophone F1.

Update, December 25, 2018: As anticipated, the surprise launch from Pocophone is a new version of the F1. Joining the original Armoured Edition version with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the new version features the same Kevlar finish, but with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The new version will sell for 23,999 rupees in India, via Mi.com and Flipkart; sales start December 26.

It’s not clear whether the new Armoured version of the F1 will be released in other markets. Seeing that the global Pocophone Twitter account had nothing to say about the new model, don’t get your hopes too high.

Original post, December 24, 2018: Pocophone (aka Poco in India) has taken the world by storm this year. The Xiaomi offshoot ranked first in our recent reader survey about the best new smartphone brands of 2018, by a huge margin. That’s largely on the strength of its high-powered debut device, the Pocophone F1, which is almost unbeatable in its price range.

Now Pocophone is ready to unveil something new. Check out the teaser:

We don’t know yet what this #NewPOCO thing is, but don’t get your hopes high for a Pocophone F2. The F1 is too early in its lifecycle to get a successor. Plus, Pocophone will probably want to wait for the new Snapdragon 855 to become available before it pushes out another cheap powerhouse.

According to Ishan Agarwal, Pocophone may actually be teasing new color versions of the F1. You may know Agarwal from some recent high-profile leaks, like the mystery new OnePlus or the McLaren 6T before it. He thinks – though he doesn’t claim to know for sure – that Pocophone will bring the Kevlar finish down to the lower-end versions of the F1, as well as release new gradient colors at the same price as the existing ones.

There’s a chance Pocophone will surprise us with a brand-new device, but it doesn’t make much sense to do it on Christmas day.

It’s also possible we’ll just get a software update. Pocophone previously said it would try to update the F1 with HD Netflix support by the end of the year.

Poco Launcher out of beta, try it out on your non-Pocophone now

  • The launcher included with the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is now available as a stable release.
  • You can download the Poco Launcher from the Google Play Store and use it on any compatible Android device.
  • The Poco Launcher is unexpectedly popular, with 500,000 installs even before it went stable.

The Xiaomi Pocophone F1 surprised us all by offering some notable flagship specs — including a Snapdragon 845 and a 4,000mAh battery — for the very reasonable starting price of about $300.

However, what’s even more surprising is how popular the launcher is on the device. It’s popular enough that a beta listing on the Google Play Store earned half-a-million downloads and some pretty decent reviews with them.

Today, the Poco Launcher is officially out of beta, and anyone can download and install it from the Google Play Store. Click the button at the bottom of this article to check it out.

What makes the Poco Launcher so special? It’s likely because it is simple and elegant — two words you most likely wouldn’t use to describe Xiaomi’s usual skinning of Android through its love-it-or-hate-it MIUI. The Poco Launcher is very close to stock, and it’s zippy, minimalism approach will make stock Android fanboys very happy.

If you haven’t experimented with Android launchers yet, now would be a good time to try some out. They can totally change the user experience of using a smartphone.
