Meet @NokiaCareUS – Official Nokia Support on Twitter for North America

We just got word that a whole team of folks will be working on the ~~@NokiaUSCare~~ @NokiaCareUS twitter account to answer questions you have about Nokia products or the Ovi Store. The account was created last June but they just tweeted about the launch today. This could be the fastest way to let someone at Nokia know about the issues you’re experiencing.

Update: Name was changed to @NokiaCareUS.

At the time of publishing this post, the ~~@NokiaUSCare~~ NokiaCareUS twitter account has 11 followers and only following the @NokiaUS account. They will be serving North America.

I’ve reached out for more info and will update this post once I get a response. Have a question about your device or the Ovi Store? Why don’t you try asking them now?

Witter For Nokia N900 Updated to 0.1.1-9 – Twitter App Steadily Improving

Daniel Would is developing a Twitter app for the Nokia N900 named Witter that is steadily improving at each update. It’s still in early development, but Witter is already very functional. You can tweet, reply, retweet, and Twitpic in addition to viewing the timeline, mentions, trends, and direct messages.

The main thing I noticed in the current update is the addition auto-refresh. Daniel also included the option to change the refresh interval.

It may not look very pretty right now because there are no graphics within the app yet. However, keep in mind that it is built from scratch and users have the opportunity to try the it out and give feedback to the developer before it goes public.

Some things I would like to see in the update:

Word-wrap tweets
Friends’ avatars
Easier way to reply (users need to long-press in current version 0.1.1-9 )
Better Time Display Format (seconds, time zone designator, and year is unnecessary)

Nokia Messaging for Social Networks Beta2 App Review

I’ve been using the second beta to Nokia Messaging for Social Networks the weekend before today’s official announcement. If you need a reminder, the first beta was released at Nokia World, supporting only Facebook. The new version adds new options for Facebook and adds support for Twitter. Read on for some of my feedback.

The Nokia Messaging team listened to the user feedback from the first release. The major addition is Twitter support. Product Manager Davis Fields explained, “We’ve added much more to this release including Twitter, all delivered live to the homescreen on your Nokia.” Clicking on a tweet or a friend’s Facebook update opens the full client displaying the relevant page so you can quickly respond.

Feedback

Nokia would like its users to try out the beta give them some feedback. You can download the app at messaging.nokia.com. This beta supports the Nokia N97 N97 mini, and the 5800.

My feedback. It’s great that they’ve added Twitter, but it’s definitely very basic. Pressing on most of the options usually ended up with a coming soon message. You can update, view mentions (hidden below the “what’s happening” form), and favorites (also hidden).

During a pre-briefing, we were told that this will not replace full-featured Twitter apps like Gravity, and the final software will be more targeted towards new users. I sort of disagree since I think new users will probably have a better Twitter experience using the Gravity application.

One bug I noticed that needs to be fixed immediately is the Twitter reply. It does not register the original tweet, hence not showing the “in reply to” submessage.

I also found this beta to be very slow at times even on my fast wifi connection. For example, my friends’ Facebook wall and photo albums take too long to load while there’s a considerable waiting time for the Facebook calendar to load as well. I’m not sure whether to blame the hardware I’m using which is the Nokia N97 mini or the beta software.

I really can’t complain too much since Nokia Messaging for Social Networks is still in beta. I’ve provided my feedback and Nokia is hoping to hear from you, too. I’m looking forward to the upcoming releases to see more improvements.

How To Install Power Twitter on Nokia N900 Web Browser

Power Twitter is a browser add-on that adds inline YouTube, Flickr, TwitPic, all sorts of playable/viewable media to the twitter.com interface. It also features link expansion to preview the link’s page title. Power Twitter makes the official Twitter page better, so read on to find out how to install on the Nokia N900.

If you don’t have a Nokia N900 yet, you can still see how Power Twitter works by installing it on Firefox on your computer.

You can also watch this video in HD on Youtube. Subscribe to the channel to preview the latest videos before they get published on the blog.

Steps

1. Install Greasemonkey-webaddon. It’s currently in the Extras-Devel repository.

2. Restart the Nokia N900. I’m not sure if it’s necessary, but I had to restart my device in order to install the script on the next step.

3. Install Power Twitter script for Greasemonkey from powertwitter.me.

4. Open twitter.com with the Nokia N900’s browser. There should now be a link to the Power Twitter settings on the lower right corner. Login with your Twitter account and check/uncheck options based on your preference.

Hahlo is an Awesome Twitter (Web) App on the Nokia N900

I’ve been using Dabr on the Nokia N900 for my Twitter needs, but I stumbled upon a better web app called Hahlo. There’s no need to download anything since it’s accessible through the web browser. I’m surprised at the features it offers like auto-refresh, inline photos, inline replies, tweets near me, OAuth login, and more.

You don’t even need to read this review since you can quickly head over to the site from your current browser to see for yourself. I’ll highlight the 6 things I love about Hahlo.

#1 If a tweet is a reply to another, pressing “in reply to” shows the reply on the same page.

#2 Tweets with photos like twitpics or flickr are shown.

#3 I can choose how often my timeline automatically refreshes and new tweets become highlighted for a moment.

#4 Access to more options like tweets near me, trends, and advanced search.

#5 It’s customizable. Settings allow you to hide/show or turn on/off features.

#6 Options to retweet, reply, favorite, or direct message by clicking on a tweet.

Hahlo is a great example of how we really don’t need to install applications to get what we want. The browser is a powerful all-in-one app. It looks great on the Nokia N900.

How To Auto-Tweet Videos Uploaded to Youtube From Your Nokia Device

I use Youtube a lot and I just discovered users can automatically notify their Twitter followers when new videos are uploaded. This is possible thanks to Youtube’s AutoShare feature. It’s great because it also simplifies the process of sharing videos on Twitter directly from your phone. I’ll show you how.

Step 1. Activate Autoshare on Youtube. You can find it in Accounts – Sharing.

Step 2. Upload videos from your Nokia phone via Pixelpipe. Here’s more information about this step if you haven’t heard of it yet.

Step 3. That’s it! After the video is uploaded and processed, your Twitter account will automatically announce it for you. I only have one complaint. I wish Youtube didn’t add “I uploaded a Youtube video,” on the tweets. It limits the length of our titles.

Make sure to subscribe to the channel to preview videos before they get published on the blog.

Goodbye Twitpic! Tweet Photos With Flickr Twitter Beta

Watch out Twitpic! Flickr now allows its users to automatically send out a tweet whenever they upload photos through email. If you follow me on Twitter, then you probably notice I prefer to include photos with my tweets. I’ve been doing this with Twitpic on Nokia phones, but I no longer need it thanks to Flickr Twitter beta.

Setup

You’ll need to authorize your account here: www.flickr.com/account/blogs/add/twitter
Click on “Head over to Twitter” then “Allow.”
Note the email address. You can simply send an email over and it will work, but I suggest bringing this info over to Pixelpipe so you can tweet from your Nokia phone using Share Online.

Why Flickr over Twitpic?

If you already use Flickr, you no longer need to use another service like Twitpic to tweet your photos.
Twitpic lets you view a resized photo plus the original size, while Flickr allows 6 size options.
Flickr shows other useful info like the camera used or geotagged locations. Twitpic supports neither.

I Love Gravity – v1.17 Introduces Twitter Groups

Mobileways updated Gravity, a Twitter app on the S60, to version 1.17 on May 4th. I love this app even more now that it supports Twitter groups. If you follow a lot of people on Twitter, groups make it easier for you to organize the tweets you read. Many people like Gravity for several reasons, but this functionality makes it a must-have app for S60 Twitter power users.

Groups is one of the most demanded features for Twitter, allowing members to focus on different sets of people they’re following. For example, you could create groups for celebrities, colleagues at work, friends in real life, family members, and so on.

Twitter itself does not provide a Groups feature so users rely on third party applications to implement it. Tweetdeck is a popular desktop application because of this function and Gravity just implemented it with their latest update.

I wrote in my original review of Gravity that that it kept closing randomly while using it. I don’t see that problem anymore after several updates. You can do this directly from the application itself, which is impressive. The application costs $9.95.

Nokia S60 Phone + Vitalist + Twitter = The Gtd Triumvirate

The term triumvirate (from Latin, “of three men”) is commonly used to describe a political regime dominated by three powerful individuals as cited in Wikipedia; in this case, the triumvirate is composed of our beloved Nokia S60 phone, Vitalist, and Twitter.

Doing the Gtd should be silly simple and most importantly 100% reliable because if our systems are not reliable they will inevitably fail us in their purpose; what’s their purpose, making our lives easier. We have all experienced this type of situation at some time in our work and personal lives; we’re urgently looking for those “important” documents that are mission critical to the success of some project and we know we had the information somewhere but we you just can’t seem to pinpoint the exact location of the papers (Gtd Filing System).

So what happens next, you fail at that moment to comply with your boss’s request, thus looking unorganized, inefficient, and not really putting the forth effort that you need. If we extrapolate further, we can make an argument that since we are human beings and its in our nature to only remember the negative things that happen to people, then come review time, you may suffer the inevitable consequence of leaving a sour taste in your boss’s mind for all those moments you could have delivered but didn’t and maybe getting passed over on a position or not getting the expected bonus, etc. Getting things done is a real and we as human beings get judged on everyday on our results and not our efforts, nobody remembers who lost the 1972 Super Bowl but we all remember the Dolphins. So how can we get a rock solid mobile system? Easy, setup your own Gtd Triumvirate.

Vitalist

Vitalist is a Web 2.0 to-do list manager that is based on tenets of ‘Getting Things Done’. Vitalist has everything you want and no excesses, its interface is simply a joy to use, its maneuverability is unparalleled, and it simply just works. Vitalist is easy to setup and free to use but they do have several plans to choose from for those who require more power. I, myself, have a premium account which gives me access to unlimited categories, unlimited projects, unlimited contacts, and basically everything else.

Top Features

It has a mobile site that is easily accessible through your favorite mobile browser ie. Web from Nokia S60, Opera Mini, and Skyfire
It has iCal support which makes it a breeze to import that calendar as ‘read-only’ into guess what, yes Google Calendar and of course other calendars that have ical integration.
They have never been down or had any weird server issues ever as long as I’ve been using the service.
They have a Twitter integration, guys and this rocks, I’ll explain later.
You can receive reminders for your next actions via email and sms as well as a daily digest.
iGoogle gadget supports, very nice feature

As you can see this application is very capable of handling even the most demanding Gtders.

Twitter

Twitter, the phenomenal micro-blogging client that has revolutionized the world from all things casual to even major news coverage is a vital part of this Gtd Triumvirate. The Twitter integration from Vitalist is an amazing and ground breaking option that not only augments Vitalist’s usability but also give us an important way of feeding tasks (next actions) into our Vitalist Inbox.

Since Twitter has a plethora of internet and mobile clients, this integration creates a strong synergistic relationship with Vitalist. How does the Twitter option work? Simple, you simply input your Twitter id in the settings of Vitalist and that’s it, you can start direct messages to “d vitalist” and all your tweets will magically appear in your Vitalist Inbox, isn’t that cool.

Some notable Twitter desktop clients are Twhirl, Tweetdeck, and Twibble, the latter having an amazing Java mobile client as well, that is fully compatible with the S60 hardware. In the end your personal preferences will guide you as to which client suits your needs, but it’s great to know that we have tons of options when it comes to this Twitter integration with Vitalist. Another major player joining the Twitter mobile platform is the much anticipated release of MobileWay’s Gravity, a native twitter s60 mobile client that will surely bring tons of functionality.

Through our S60 browser, we can easily access Vitalist Mobile making it really convenient to check our next actions, someday maybe, and projects and as an added bonus you can also use Google Calendar Mobile to access your Google Calendar on the go, create a bookmark call it “Calendar” and map it to one of your soft keys and voila you have 1-click access to your calendar which works via edge, 3G, and wifi and boom you’re always connected.

Bonus Power Gtd Setup

If you want to map your different “Google Calendar” calendars to your native s60 calendar, you can use a GooSync premium account along with SBSH Calendar (previously called Papyrus) to color code your calendar; to be continued… . . .

Final Thoughts

So go happy Gtding and don’t forget we’re always getting things done in some way, shape, or form. It’s important to have a nicely integrated system that will not fail us when we need it.

Make Announcements Using Ping.fm On Your Phone

I use Jaiku, Twitter, and Facebook to update other bloggers, friends, or family what I’m doing. The three services serve different purposes and audience for me, so I rarely update all statuses with the same information. However, there are some things I want to tell everyone about… like the time I popped the big question. Thanks to Ping.fm on my phone, I was able to announce my engagement.

In summary, Ping.fm allows me to update my status in all of the services I use with just one post. Having a mobile site (m.ping.fm) is one big plus! I used the Nokia N95 8GB.

Instead of texting or calling my close friends one by one, most found out through Facebook right away! Jaiku and Twitter is another way for the blog readers here and other bloggers to connect with me. I was very thankful for the congratulation messages.

Why I Don’t Like Nokia’s Friend View

I already have Twitter, Jaiku, and Facebook. So why should I use Nokia’s Friend View? According to Nokia’s overview, it is a location and micro-blogging service that helps you stay in touch with your close friends. My problem with that is that my most of close friends don’t have Nokia handsets.

Here’s a video of Friend View and how it works.

Most of my close friends are on Facebook and I notice that status updates are now frequently updated via mobile devices. My friends let me know what they’re doing using any phone.

On the other hand, I use Jaiku and Twitter to connect with other Nokia bloggers and readers. They are especially great sources for getting topic ideas. I don’t expect any of my close friends to be on Jaiku, but I am starting to notice a few slowly join Twitter!

So why Friend View? The only way it will be useful to me is that if my friends all have Nokia phones with GPS. I’ve convinced a few to get Nokia Nseries phones but really not enough people for the app to be useful to me.

Best Ways to Use Twitter With Nokia Phones

If you’re one of the millions of people using Twitter, I’ll tell you the best ways to use it with your recent Nokia or S60 phone. I’ll show you what applications to use and how you can show location, videos, and pictures with your tweets.

Application For Twitter

A common question I see is what application to install to use Twitter on their S60 Nokia phones. The answer is twibble. You can even use your phone’s GPS for twibble to include your location with your tweets. You can supposedly insert photos thru twibble, but I got errors trying. I’ll tell you more about tweeting with photos so keep reading. Download twibble mobile.

Using the S60 Browser For Twitter

If you do not like Twibble, a better way to send tweets ~~is accessing m.slandr.net through the browser.~~ Update: I now prefer to use dabr.co.uk because it seems to have more options and looks prettier. You can send tweets, view replies, and check direct messages here as well. This is for you if you don’t want to bother installing anything on your phone. Alternatively, you can use m.twitter.com to keep it simple and don’t need to see replies nor direct messages.

How to Add Photos with Tweets

Add twitpic as an upload site in Shozu. Take a photo, add a title for the picture, then send it to twitpic using Shozu. Here’s a sample tweet with a photo inserted through Shozu.

How To: Live Video Stream On Twitter Using Qik On Nokia Phone

It’s unbelievable what our phones can do. We know lots of people tweet what they’re doing on Twitter, but with the addition of a Nokia phone and the Qik service, you can SHOW people what you’re doing right now. This is possible by automatically letting Twitter know whenever you start streaming on Qik. I’ll show you how.

Example: automatic tweet from Nokia N95 8GB using Qik

What you need first: You’ll need a cameraphone (I’m using the Nokia N95 8GB as an example), a Twitter account, and a Qik account.

Setting It Up

Sign in to your Qik profile then click edit profile -> Networks. Twitter is the first one on the list. Click here if you can’t find it.
Click Edit this account then type your login info from Twitter.
On the message form, type what you want to show up as the first phrase on each ‘tweet.’ I chose live video for my account.
Check “Tweet all videos” so that videos automatically get announced on Twitter.
Click save changes. Done.

Setting it up

Using It

Open up Qik on your phone.
Optional, but I recommend setting a title for each stream. You can do this by Menu -> Stream Info -> Set Title.
When you’re ready just press “Stream.” Your twitter friends will be notified right away and can watch what you’re doing live instead of just reading about it.

Set the title on Qik. Here’s my tweet example for this post.

You are now ready to live stream and Tweet at the same time. Be careful with a live drunk tweet though… you might regret it in the morning.
