GSM Online from Poland just published a video walkthrough of the Nokia N8 covering probably everything except the web browser and camera. You should watch it because the last segment shows Nokia Messaging breezing through emails. It’s great to preview these Nokia N8 videos as we get closer to the release date. It seems to get more responsive in each new video that pops up.

GSM Online says the hardware they played with is the final retail version, but the software isn’t. They also say it acted pretty quick, but you can see that for yourself in the video.

Video: Ovi Contacts & Social Networks Integration on Nokia N8

Marcos Diaz Mathe, a film director, has uploaded a video showing the integration of contacts and social networks on the upcoming Nokia N8. There were some good close-up shots of the N8 in action so I’ve taken some screenshots. Take a look.

I think the images displayed on the screen are simulated because they don’t align properly with the Nokia N8. Nevertheless, watch the video below. Click here if it’s not visible in your RSS reader.

Video: Eldar Murtazin Denies Everything & TechCrunch Loves iPhone

Mobile insider Eldar Murtazin has gone on video with TechCrunch to say that he did not have Nokia’s prototype N8, did not receive Nokia’s letter for its return, and is not a current consultant to their competitors. Watch the whole video, and look out for surprising comments from TechCrunch like, “This isn’t the iPhone. I mean, who cares about Nokia?”

And here’s another comment from TechCrunch: “It’s the Nokia N8… you know… it’s the sequel to the N7. It’s not the next iPhone.”

N7? Never heard of it.

Prototype Nokia RM-626 Shown On Video Again. Has 4-inch Screen

We’ve seen photos and video of the prototype Nokia RM-626, but it was hard to determine the actual size of the display without a solid comparison. Thanks to Techno Buffalo’s latest video, they confirmed it has a 4-inch capacitive multi-touch display.

We don’t know the commercial name for this prototype yet, but my guess is Nokia N8-01. Others say N9, C7, etc, but right now, there’s no official confirmation.

Some other things that are worth mentioning are the 640×360 resolution, front-facing camera with LED flash (is that world’s first?), and HDMI out.

Nokia RM-626 next to iPhone 4 and HTC EVO 4G

I’m concerned that the resolution isn’t good enough for a display this size. Keep in mind the Apple iPhone 4 with a 3.5-inch screen has a 960×640 resolution while a Samsung Galaxy S with 4-inch screen has 800×480. Without even holding the actual device, I can tell you right now that the display on this prototype RM-626 isn’t sharp.

Prototype Nokia RM-626 Gets More Exposure on Video

Negri teased us earlier with 3 photos of an unnamed prototype Nokia device, but now they deliver a 4-minute hands-on video. It says Nokia C0-00 on the back of the device, but the model info within the phone settings shows N00. Whatever it’s called, this device is certainly getting attention from Qwerty keyboard-lovers.

The device looks thin enough and I like the reassuring clicks when they slide the keyboard. It features dual LED camera flash, instead of the stronger xenon flash on the Nokia N8. It seems to be running Symbian^3 as well.

Learning about this prototype creates a problematic question for me. Which do I want more? Xenon flash on the Nokia N8 or the Qwerty keyboard on this unnamed model RM-626? What do you think?

Nokia E73 Mode Spotted Early on Video

We’re just a few days away from the Nokia E73 Mode’s official launch on June 16th, but it looks like some T-mobile stores have them already. I’m not sure if they’re selling them yet, but we spotted several hands-on photos a few days ago and now there’s a video on Youtube which was clearly recorded from a T-mobile store .

If you look closely, it seems the video was recorded by a Nokia N900 user and you can hear one of the employees asking the person, “Do you have any questions?”

A Closer Look at the Nokia N8 Video Editor

Nokia released a video on Tuesday showing the photo/video browser and editor on the Nokia N8. I paid a lot of attention to the video editor because it’s a feature that I really want to test out. Read on for my findings.

The Nokia N8 video editor seems easy to use. You start out with an empty Storyboard and then insert some videos and photos.

Notice that selecting media scrolls left and right.

We can add titles and edit its size, color, and position

Trim clips to cut out sections from beginning or end.

I noticed 12 transition effects we can insert between clips.

What They Didnt Show

The video did not show what happens after we’re done editing. Can we choose the export size? How long does it take to process? Can we upload to Youtube easily? We also didn’t see a demo of inserting music to the movie, but it looks like an available option.

Compared to iMovie on iPhone

The video editor on the Nokia N8 will be compared to iMovie for iPhone by reviewers. They mostly share the same core features but I think the built-in theme transitions, texts, and music on iMovie makes it a step ahead of the Nokia N8’s video editor. There’s still time for Nokia to improve the video editor before the Nokia N8 goes on sale later this summer.

Weatherbug for Nokia N900 Now Available at Ovi Store

Weatherbug just showed up at the Ovi Store for the Nokia N900. I recorded a video overview of the app so you can see how it works before downloading the app. There aren’t many apps at the Ovi Store, so it’s kind of a big deal when something new shows up. Take a look.

When you first open the application, it asks you for the location either by zip code or city. You can enter more than one and toggle through them on the main panel.

There are four panels on the right that can display maps, forecasts, video, and even a photo outside your nearest weather station. The Weatherbug application gives more information than I really need, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Nokia N8 Foosball Viral that Caused Trouble in April Now Out

Back in April, a tweet from a cameraman who supposedly worked on the project leaked info about a viral video that had something to do with foosball and the upcoming Nokia N8. I was asked to remove my post, but now the video is officially out for everyone to see.

It briefly shows off the TV-out and video feature of the N8, but I was more intrigued whether the foosball tricks were real. If you watch the until end, you can see some behind-the-scenes and slow-mo footage.

Video: Nokia N8 Design Team

The Nseries blog just released a video of the Nokia N8 design team talking about the inspiration and craftsmanship behind the upcoming device. People are definitely excited, but there’s a long wait until it hits retailers’ shelves. This video might help keep the excitement alive.

The Nokia N8 is built with aluminum material that is light yet strong. It also allows them to create details without the need of adding another material by using diamond cutting. Perhaps what’s more visible to users is that the aluminum material gave Nokia the opportunity to add different colors: Green, Orange, Blue, Silver, Black. Which color is for you? I’m thinking orange or blue.

Nokia N8 Web Browser Gets Demoed on Video

A video showing the Nokia N8 and its web browser popped up on YouTube. It didn’t have the cool professional lighting from Nokia’s official videos and you had to turn your head to watch it. However, it gave us a nice little preview of the web browser for the upcoming device. Unfortunately it was immediately taken down.

The video started with a preloaded page from Arab Nokia on the browser, then the Nokia N8 proceeded to demo kinetic scrolling, multitouch pinch-to-zoom, flash support, and the transition between landscape and horizontal orientation. Overall, it looked smooth and snappy, but zooming out seemed to be a little slow. Grey and white boxes were visible before re-rendering the page. It was a pre-production device, so I hope that gets fixed when the final version comes out.

First Nokia N8 HD Video Sample Revealed with Help from Tripod and Slider

The official Nokia Conversations blog showed off the first HD video sample captured by the upcoming Nokia N8. It looks amazing! However, it looks like they’ve got help from tripods and dolly slider for some of the shots which I’m sure average users don’t carry around. Take a look.

In the next sample videos, I’d like to see more handheld shots and hear some actual audio from the Nokia N8. According to a recent post on Conversations about the Nokia N8’s HD video, the device sports two mics. The N8 can capture the user’s voice and ambience in a loud room with music where competitors struggle.

Another cool video feature of the Nokia N8 is its active hyper-focal distance. Nokia claims this technology makes subjects from 60cm up to infinity remain in focus when you’re shooting. The sample video above does indeed show the object and background in focus.

I’m really liking the Nokia N8 after learning about its imaging and video capabilities. I love taking photos and videos. That’s the reason I carry my DSLR (it takes videos too) as much as I can. However, there are situations when it’s too big to carry around. Having a cameraphone that takes photos and videos comparable to standalone cameras makes a great backup to my DSLR. I look forward to testing it out myself.

3 Ways to Download & Manage Video Feeds and Podcasts on Symbian

Video feeds, podcasts, or vodcasts, tv show episodes, blog videos, news and much more can be downloaded and managed directly on your Nokia phone. In this guide, I’ll show you three ways you can add these video content to your Symbian^1 devices like the Nokia N97 or the N97 mini.

Podcasting

The Podcasting app can play audio and video files. The first thing you need to do is find your favorite podcasts and subscribe to it. You can either do this in the directories or the featured podcasts on your phone. Another option is to use the search feature. If you can’t find the podcasts of your favorite site, you can manually enter the address, too.

To update your podcasts, I recommend that you go to the settings and tweak in accordance to your desired setup. You can choose to manually or automatically update your list.

Settings for Download and Connection

In the podcast list, you can see its percentage of downloaded portion or a check when completed. You can also open the web page link of the corresponding item.

Podcasts Status

Note that you cannot watch video files that in your Music Player Podcasts library because only MP3s are transferred. You go to Videos & TV for the downloaded video podcasts.

Web Feeds

Web feeds can be found in the web browser where you can manage your XML files such as RSS. Unlike the Podcasting app, it downloads the articles or headlines which contains vodcast links for streaming or direct download in your phone.

Web Feeds Library

To add feeds, you need to visit the web page of your favorite sites then you can subscribe on their RSS. The hard things to find are the Vodcasts of your favorite sites or media groups and I suggest that you use the search engine for that.

Feeds which contain vodcasts can be downloaded directly to your phone and viewed in your gallery.

Video Feeds Episodes

For YouTube feeds, you can only see the links in your web feeds library and stream from your web browser.

Videos & TV

You can also add video feeds in the Videos & TV application. You can add the RSS or any XML file of your favorite blog shows or news.

Videos & TV

Adding video feeds can be done through manual typing the url address of your favorite shows. The video directories that Nokia included only link you to Audio & Video of Ovi Store.

Video Feeds Library

Both MP4 and WMV files can be played on your Nokia N97 and N97 Mini so all iPods & PSPs videos can be added in your feeds.

I lost the Apple Remote that came with my Macbook, but it’s not a problem thanks to a Nokia N900 widget called Raemote developed by Thomas Perl. RaeMote is a desktop widget for the Nokia N900 that allows you to use the device’s infrared port as an Apple Remote. I created a quick video to show you how well it works.

One of the latest additions to Gravity is the Google Reader integration. That’s right! Our favorite Twitter app for Symbian can now receive and manage updates for Google Reader. Go watch it in action.

Your feeds can be shared on Delicious, Instapaper, Read-it-Later, or Twitter. You can also add to favorites or open the link in your web browser. Searching feeds also find all the posts that contains your entered text.

In related news, build 6365 update was just released for Gravity. One of the many reasons we like this app so much is that it is constantly updated for new features and bug fixes. It was just a few days ago when build 6358 was released.

Video: How Maemo Looks on HTC HD2’s 4.3in Screen

HTC and T-mobile are bombarding the television shows I watch with their “ridiculously big screen” HTC HD2 ads. Wonder how the Nokia N900’s Maemo OS look on that beautiful screen? Well, Jykazu manages to get Maemo on the HD2 and shows it on Youtube for us to see. Take a look.

I wish there was an actual Nokia N900 next to the HD2 for comparison so we can see the big difference in size of the screen. Check this comparison done by Engadget between a 3.5, 3.7, and 4.3 inches displays.

Sygic Mobile Maps Now Available on Nokia N900 for Europe & USA

Initially launched for Europe a few days ago, I noticed Sygic Mobile Maps for the Nokia N900 now support the US as well. It is the first turn-by-turn voice guided navigation application on Maemo. I’m a little surprised that Sygic was able to deliver their app before Nokia implemented voice navigation to their built-in Ovi Maps.

So far, only the US and Europe are supported, and it appears you have to purchase them separately if you want both. It costs EUR 50 and 60 for US and Europe respectively. Sygic says on their website that further regions will be added and announced gradually.

I think it is a little expensive considering that Ovi maps for Symbian provides free worldwide navigation as well as Android offering free navigation in the US.

The DC-11 has a capacity of 1500mAh and recharges for about two and a half hours. If you’re at home, it is recommended to connect the AC adapter to the DC-11 and then the DC-11 to your device so that both gets charged at the same time. Since the DC-11 has both the 2mm and micro-USB connector, you can even charge an additional device.

Charging the DC-11 itself requires the 2mm connector. The sales package does not come with it so this could be a problem if you don’t have this type of power adapter lying around already and if you have newer devices like the Nokia N900 and the N97 mini that came with microUSB chargers.

The Nokia DC-11 can be found online for about $45 USD. I think power users and people who travel frequently will find it really handy.

Video How to: Use Bookmarklets on the Nokia N900’s Browser

Bookmarklets are bookmarks in the browser designed to add one-click functionality to a web page. On our desktops, we save bookmarklets by dragging a links to to our browser’s toolbar. It’s different on mobile devices. I checked the Nokia N900, Nexus One, iPhone, and the Nokia N97 mini and noticed only the N900 can quickly save bookmarklets.

Wordpress Press This. Here are 100 more that you might find helpful.

To save a bookmarklet on the Nokia N900, long-press on the link and add as a bookmark. You can access it later by clicking on the bookmarks button on the lower left corner. That’s it!

It’s not that easy on other devices. Saving bookmarklets on the iPhone requires syncing with a computer. There are other ways, but again, it’s not as intuitive as the N900. I also tried saving a bookmarklet on the Nexus One and the Nokia N97 mini, but failed.

WOMWorld/Nokia put up 3 tickets for grabs over the weekend for an all-expenses-paid trip to SXSW in Austin, Texas. Spotted: Nokia X6 in Kesha’s Blah Blah Blah Music Video

The Nokia X6 was spotted in Kesha’s music video of her latest single, Blah Blah Blah featuring 3OH!3. I’m not sure, but I think they made the Nokia logo bigger for the video. The on-screen qwerty and camera were shown off. Check it out.

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Firmware Updated to v40 – Feels Incomplete

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition got a firmware update to software version 40.2.005, but it feels incomplete. Kinetic scrolling is not applied everywhere like in the Nokia N97 mini and the original N97. The new Ovi maps with free navigation isn’t included within the new firmware either, so you have another download to take care of if you haven’t installed it previously.

Heres a quick video of the firmware on the Nokia 5800 Nav edition. Some areas in the interface have kinetic scrolling like the phone settings. It could be confusing how to scroll through lists.

The Nokia 5800 Nav is just like the regular version I reviewed previously, with the addition of a car mount and car charger. It initially came out with a lifetime license for navigation, but the newer version of Ovi Maps gave all supported models free navigation. You can watch the unboxing to see the contents.

I haven’t found any changelogs yet, but I’ll assume the new firmware also fixed some bugs and improved stability.

Nokia Symbian^4 UI Preview Videos

Fierce Wireless uploaded a couple of videos from Symbian showing a preview of the Symbian^4 UI. One is for the homescreen and the other for the photos album. They’re not the usual flashy marketing videos, but it gives you an idea of what to expect.

From what I see, Symbian^4 looks like a combination of Maemo and Android UI. For example, the exit button on the upper right corner is replaced by a “back” or “previous” button that Android users are familiar with. The photos demo looks nice. I like the scrolling thumbnail below the larger photo.

What’s sad is that it will be a while until we see a Symbian^4 device. According to the Symbian roadmap, S^4 won’t be code complete until Q3 2010 and we won’t see any handsets until the first half of 2011.

Nokia Releases New Ovi Store Video

The official Nokia Conversations blog just shared a cool new video about the Ovi Store. Could it be somehow related to tomorrow’s press event? The Facebook, Gravity, and Qik apps get featured in an interesting animation. Take a look.

My main device right now is the Nokia N900. The Ovi store for this device is still in beta and doesn’t have a lot of apps or games available yet. I’m hoping that get’s fixed soon.

Video: How to Enable The Hidden Portrait Mode On Nokia N900 Web Browser

I noticed a bug report about portrait mode on the Nokia N900’s web browser. Wait… there’s portrait view now? It seems this hidden feature can be enabled on the web browser by pressing Ctrl-Shift-o. This works on the latest Nokia N900 firmware 2.2009.51-1 and seems to be an undocumented feature. I made a video to show you how it looks.

Pressing the three buttons toggle it on and off, maintaining the setting even after rebooting the Nokia N900. The screen automatically rotates when the keyboard is closed and the device is held upright. It goes back to landscape view if keyboard is slid open. The on-screen keyboard also appears in landscape view only.

Despite some of the drawbacks I mentioned above, it’s cool that Nokia left this “hidden feature” to be found by its users. I believe this option was hidden because it is simply not finished yet.

I actually prefer to use browser in landscape view, but some websites appear better in portrait mode. For example, my favorite Nokia N900 Twitter web app, Hahlo.com, looks great in that view.

One major thing missing from the Nokia N900 is an official Google Maps application. Fortunately, the mobile version of their website looks like a good solution until Google decides to release a native app for Maemo and the Nokia N900. I’ve created a video to show you how it looks.

Simply go to google.com/maps/m on the Nokia N900’s web browser. The browser have the Hover and Manipulation modes that are handy on the Google maps mobile website. You can use these modes in order to move and zoom on the map.

The Google Maps mobile website allows users to search, view traffic, satellite view, and even call places. This solution isn’t perfect and a proper application should make the experience better. ~~The web browser does not know your current location, so you have to double tap many times to zoom in from world view to to street.~~ Have a Nokia N900? Update: Thanks to a tip by @dsawhney, installing the maemo-geolocation plugin from Application manager enables the web browser to find my location for Google Maps! Awesome!

This is not a recommended method of installing applications on the Nokia N900, but follow this guide if you receive an app as a .deb file from a trusted developer. This is a fast and easy way to install from a file using the red pill mode on the Nokia N900.
