Enterprises face a significant challenge when deploying AI agents: the desktop and legacy applications that power most business workflows are simply inaccessible to modern AI systems. According to a 2024 Gartner report, 75% of organizations run legacy applications that lack modern APIs, and 71% of Fortune 500 companies operate critical processes on mainframe systems without adequate programmatic access. For many organizations, this has meant choosing between delaying AI adoption or undertaking expensive and risky modernization projects.

Today, we are announcing that Amazon WorkSpaces now enables AI agents to securely operate desktop applications without requiring application modernization. The same managed virtual desktops that millions of employees use and trust can now also serve AI agents, turning WorkSpaces into infrastructure for scaling enterprise productivity, not just delivering it. Because agents operate within your existing WorkSpaces environment, there are no APIs to build, no application migrations to plan, and no new infrastructure to manage.

Some of our customers had an early opportunity to give their agents a WorkSpace. Chris Noon, Director, Nuvens Consulting shared with us, “WorkSpaces lets our clients give AI agents the same secure, governed desktop environment their employees already use — no custom API integrations, full audit trails, and enterprise-grade isolation out of the box. For regulated industries, that’s not a nice-to-have — it’s the baseline.”

Secure cloud desktop access for AI agents

With WorkSpaces, AI agents can securely access and operate desktop applications running inside managed WorkSpaces environments to complete complex business workflows. Agents authenticate through AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and connect via Workspaces with complete audit trails available through AWS CloudTrail and Amazon CloudWatch. Because agents operate within secure WorkSpaces environments rather than on local machines, your existing security controls and compliance policies remain fully intact.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Amazon Workspaces supports the industry-standard Model Context Protocol (MCP), which means WorkSpaces works with any agent framework, such as LangChain, CrewAI and Strands Agents.

Let’s try it out

To set up a WorkSpaces environment for AI agents, I started in the AWS Management Console by creating a new WorkSpaces Applications stack—the environment definition that controls how agents connect and what they’re allowed to do.

From the Amazon WorkSpaces console, I chose Create stack and configured the basics: name, fleet association, and VPC endpoints. In Step 3 of the stack creation workflow, I noticed the new AI agents section with two options. The first, No AI agent access, is the default configuration for standard WorkSpaces designed for people. The second, Add AI Agents, allows AI agents to securely access and operate applications using their own identity and permissions. I selected Add AI Agents to enable agent connections on this stack.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Next, I will enable storage before configuring the agent access settings to define how agents interact with the desktop.

Under Agent features, I enabled three capabilities. Computer input allows the agent to click, type, and scroll within the desktop. Computer vision allows the agent to capture screenshots of the desktop, which is how it “sees” the application. Finally, screenshot storage configures where session screenshots are stored for audit and debugging.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Under Desktop screen layout, I set the screen resolution to 1280×720 and image format to PNG. The resolution determines the fidelity of what the agent sees during a session—a complex application with dense UI elements might benefit from higher resolution, while a terminal-style interface works well at 720p.

With my stack configured, WorkSpaces exposes a managed MCP endpoint. I pointed my agent framework to this endpoint, provided IAM credentials for authentication, and my agent began interacting with the desktop applications installed on the fleet’s image.

To see this in action, here’s an agent built with the Strands Agent SDK and Amazon Bedrock handling a prescription refill, looking up the patient record, searching for the medication, placing the order, and confirming a successful refill, all inside a sample pharmacy system with no API.

The application doesn’t know an agent is driving it. Nothing about the software was modified, rebuilt, or integrated. The agent worked with it exactly as it exists today.

Now available

This feature is available today in public preview at no additional cost in US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon), Canada (Central), Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, Paris, London), and Asia (Tokyo, Mumbai, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore) Regions.

Get started building today using our GitHub repo, or visit the WorkSpaces page for more details.

In my last Week in Review post, I mentioned how much time I’ve been spending on AI-Driven Development Lifecycle (AI-DLC) workshops with customers this year. A common theme in those sessions is the need for better cost visibility. Teams are moving fast with AI, but as they go from experimenting to full production, finance and leadership really need to know who is using which resources and at what cost. That’s why I was so excited to see the launch of Amazon Bedrock new support for cost allocation by IAM user and role this week. This lets you tag IAM principals with attributes like team or cost center and then activate those tags in your Billing and Cost Management console. The resulting cost data flows into AWS Cost Explorer and the detailed Cost and Usage Report, giving you a clear line of sight into model inference spending. Whether you’re scaling agents across teams, tracking foundation model use by department, or running tools like Claude Code on Amazon Bedrock, this new feature is a game changer for tracking and managing your AI investments. You can get all the details on setting this up in the IAM principal cost allocation documentation.

Now, let’s get into this week’s AWS news…

Headlines

Amazon Bedrock now offers Claude Mythos Preview Anthropic’s most sophisticated AI model to date is now available on Amazon Bedrock as a gated research preview through Project Glasswing. Claude Mythos introduces a new model class focused on cybersecurity, capable of identifying sophisticated security vulnerabilities in software, analyzing large codebases, and delivering state of the art performance across cybersecurity, coding, and complex reasoning tasks. Security teams can use it to discover and address vulnerabilities in critical software before threats emerge. Access is currently limited to allowlisted organizations, with Anthropic and AWS prioritizing internet critical companies and open source maintainers.

AWS Agent Registry for centralized agent discovery and governance now in preview AWS launched Agent Registry through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, providing organizations with a private catalog for discovering and managing AI agents, tools, skills, MCP servers, and custom resources. The registry helps teams locate existing capabilities rather than duplicating them, with semantic and keyword search, approval workflows, and CloudTrail audit trails. It is accessible via the AgentCore Console, AWS CLI, SDK, and as an MCP server queryable from IDEs.

Today, we’re announcing the general availability of cross-account safeguards in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails, a new capability that enables centralized enforcement and management of safety controls across multiple AWS accounts within an organization.

With this new capability, you can specify a guardrail in a new Amazon Bedrock policy within the management account of your organization that automatically enforces configured safeguards across all member entities for every model invocation with Amazon Bedrock. This organization-wide implementation supports uniform protection across all accounts and generative AI applications with centralized control and management. This capability also offers flexibility to apply account-level and application-specific controls depending on use case requirements in addition to organizational safeguards.

Organization-level enforcements apply a single guardrail from your organization’s management account to all entities within the organization through policy settings. This guardrail automatically enforces filters across all member entities, including organizational units (OUs) and individual accounts, for all Amazon Bedrock model invocations.

Account-level enforcement enables automatic enforcement of configured safeguards across all Amazon Bedrock model invocations in your AWS account. The configured safeguards in the account-level guardrail apply to all inference API calls.

You can now establish and centrally manage dependable, comprehensive protection through a single, unified approach. This supports consistent adherence to corporate responsible AI requirements while significantly reducing the administrative burden of monitoring individual accounts and applications. Your security team no longer needs to oversee and verify configurations or compliance for each account independently.

Getting started with centralized enforcement in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails

You can get started with account-level and organization-level enforcement configuration in the Amazon Bedrock Guardrails console. Before the enforcement configuration, you need to create a guardrail with a particular version to support the guardrail configuration remains immutable and cannot be modified by member accounts and complete prerequisites for using the new capability such as resource-based policies for guardrails.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

To enable account-level enforcement, choose Create in the section of Account-level enforcement configurations.

You can choose the guardrail and version to automatically apply to all Bedrock inference calls from this account in this Region. With general availability, we introduce the new feature defining which models will be affected by the enforcement with either Include or Exclude behavior.

You can also configure selective content guarding controls for system prompts and user prompts with either Comprehensive or Selective.

Use Comprehensive when you want to enforce guardrails on everything, regardless of what the caller tags. This is the safer default when you don’t want to rely on callers to correctly identify sensitive content.

Use Selective when you trust callers to tag the right content and want to reduce unnecessary guardrail processing. This is useful when callers handle a mix of pre-validated and user-generated content, and only need guardrails applied to specific portions.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

After creating the enforcement, you can test and verify enforcement using a role in your account. The account-enforced guardrail should automatically apply to both prompts and outputs.

Check the response for guardrail assessment information. The guardrail response will include enforced guardrail information. You can also test by making a Bedrock inference call using
InvokeModel
,
InvokeModelWithResponseStream
,
Converse
, or
ConverseStream
APIs.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

To enable organization-level enforcement, go to AWS Organizations console and choose Policies menu. You can enable the Bedrock policies in the console.

After creating the policy, you can attach the policy to your desired organizational units, accounts, root in the Targets tab.

Search and select your organization root, OUs, or individual accounts to attach your policy, and choose Attach policy.

You can test that the guardrail is being enforced on member accounts and verify which guardrail is enforced. From a member account attached, you should see the organization enforced guardrail under the section Organization-level enforcement configurations.

The underlying safeguards within the specified guardrail are then automatically enforced for every model inference request across all member entities, ensuring consistent safety controls. To accommodate varying requirements of individual teams or applications, you can attach different policies with associated guardrails to different member entities through your organization.

Things to know

Here are key considerations to know about GA features:

You can now choose to include or exclude specific models in Bedrock for inference, enabling centralized enforcement on model invocation calls. You can also choose to safeguard partial or complete system prompts and input prompts. To learn more, visit Apply cross-account safeguards with Amazon Bedrock Guardrails enforcement.

Ensure you are specifying the accurate guardrail Amazon Resource Names (ARN) in the policy. Specifying an incorrect or invalid ARN will result in policy violations, non-enforcement of safeguards, and the inability to use the models in Amazon Bedrock for inference. To learn more, visit Best practices for using Amazon Bedrock policies.

Automated Reasoning checks are not supported with this capability.

Now available

Cross-account safeguards in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails is generally available today in the all AWS commercial and GovCloud Regions where Bedrock Guardrails is available. For Regional availability and a future roadmap, visit the AWS Capabilities by Region. Charges apply to each enforced guardrail according to its configured safeguards. For detailed pricing information on individual safeguards, visit Amazon Bedrock Pricing page.

Give this capability a try in the Amazon Bedrock console and send feedback to AWS re:Post for Amazon Bedrock Guardrails or through your usual AWS Support contacts.

In March, Amazon Web Services (AWS) became the first cloud service provider to deliver DeepSeek-R1 in a serverless way by launching it as a fully managed, generally available model in Amazon Bedrock. Since then, customers have used DeepSeek-R1’s capabilities through Amazon Bedrock to build generative AI applications, benefiting from the Bedrock’s robust guardrails and comprehensive tooling for safe AI deployment.

Today, I am excited to announce DeepSeek-V3.1 is now available as a fully managed foundation model in Amazon Bedrock. DeepSeek-V3.1 is a hybrid open weight model that switches between thinking mode (chain-of-thought reasoning) for detailed step-by-step analysis and non-thinking mode (direct answers) for faster responses.

According to DeepSeek, the thinking mode of DeepSeek-V3.1 achieves comparable answer quality with better results, stronger multi-step reasoning for complex search tasks, and big gains in thinking efficiency compared with DeepSeek-R1-0528.

Today, I’m happy to share that Automated Reasoning checks, a new Amazon Bedrock Guardrails policy that we previewed during AWS re:Invent, is now generally available. Automated Reasoning checks helps you validate the accuracy of content generated by foundation models (FMs) against a domain knowledge. This can help prevent factual errors due to AI hallucinations. The policy uses mathematical logic and formal verification techniques to validate accuracy, providing definitive rules and parameters against which AI responses are checked for accuracy.

This approach is fundamentally different from probabilistic reasoning methods which deal with uncertainty by assigning probabilities to outcomes. In fact, Automated Reasoning checks delivers up to 99% verification accuracy, providing provable assurance in detecting AI hallucinations while also assisting with ambiguity detection when the output of a model is open to more than one interpretation.

With general availability, you get the following new features:

Support for large documents in a single build, up to 80K tokens – Process extensive documentation; we found this can add up to 100 pages of content

Simplified policy validation – Save your validation tests and run them repeatedly, making it easier to maintain and verify your policies over time

Automated scenario generation – Create test scenarios automatically from your definitions, saving time and effort while helping make coverage more comprehensive

Enhanced policy feedback – Provide natural language suggestions for policy changes, simplifying the way you can improve your policies

Customizable validation settings – Adjust confidence score thresholds to match your specific needs, giving you more control over validation strictness

Let’s see how this works in practice.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Creating Automated Reasoning checks in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails
To use Automated Reasoning checks, you first encode rules from your knowledge domain into an Automated Reasoning policy, then use the policy to validate generated content. For this scenario, I’m going to create a mortgage approval policy to safeguard an AI assistant evaluating who can qualify for a mortgage. It is important that the predictions of the AI system do not deviate from the rules and guidelines established for mortgage approval. These rules and guidelines are captured in a policy document written in natural language.

In the Amazon Bedrock console, I choose Automated Reasoning from the navigation pane to create a policy.

I enter name and description of the policy and upload the PDF of the policy document. The name and description are just metadata and do not contribute in building the Automated Reasoning policy. I describe the source content to add context on how it should be translated into formal logic. For example, I explain how I plan to use the policy in my application, including sample Q&A from the AI assistant.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

When the policy is ready, I land on the overview page, showing the policy details and a summary of the tests and definitions. I choose Definitions from the dropdown to examine the Automated Reasoning policy, made of rules, variables, and types that have been created to translate the natural language policy into formal logic.

The Rules describe how variables in the policy are related and are used when evaluating the generated content. For example, in this case, which are the thresholds to apply and how some of the decisions are taken. For traceability, each rule has its own unique ID.

The Variables represent the main concepts at play in the original natural language documents. Each variable is involved in one or more rules. Variables allow complex structures to be easier to understand. For this scenario, some of the rules need to look at the down payment or at the credit score.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Custom Types are created for variables that are neither boolean nor numeric. For example, for variables that can only assume a limited number of values. In this case, there are two type of mortgage described in the policy, insured and conventional.

Now we can assess the quality of the initial Automated Reasoning policy through testing. I choose Tests from the dropdown. Here I can manually enter a test, consisting of input (optional) and output, such as a question and its possible answer from the interaction of a customer with the AI assistant. I then set the expected result from the Automated Reasoning check. The expected result can be valid (the answer is correct), invalid (the answer is not correct), or satisfiable (the answer could be true or false depending on specific assumptions). I can also assign a confidence threshold for the translation of the query/content pair from natural language to logic.

Before I enter tests manually, I use the option to automatically generate a scenario from the definitions. This is the easiest way to validate a policy and (unless you’re an expert in logic) should be the first step after the creation of the policy.

For each generated scenario, I provide an expected validation to say if it is something that can happen (satisfiable) or not (invalid). If not, I can add an annotation that can then be used to update the definitions. For a more advanced understanding of the generated scenario, I can show the formal logic representation of a test using SMT-LIB syntax.

After using the generate scenario option, I enter a few tests manually. For these tests, I set different expected results: some are valid, because they follow the policy, some are invalid, because they flout the policy, and some are satisfiable, because their result depends on specific assumptions.

Then, I choose Validate all tests to see the results. All tests passed in this case. Now, when I update the policy, I can use these tests to validate that the changes didn’t introduce errors.

For each test, I can look at the findings. If a test doesn’t pass, I can look at the rules that created the contradiction that made the test fail and go against the expected result. Using this information, I can understand if I should add an annotation, to improve the policy, or correct the test.

Now that I’m satisfied with the tests, I can create a new Amazon Bedrock guardrail (or update an existing one) to use up to two Automated Reasoning policies to check the validity of the responses of the AI assistant. All six policies offered by Guardrails are modular, and can be used together or separately. For example, Automated Reasoning checks can be used with other safeguards such as content filtering and contextual grounding checks. The guardrail can be applied to models served by Amazon Bedrock or with any third-party model (such as OpenAI and Google Gemini) via the ApplyGuardrail API. I can also use the guardrail with an agent framework such as Strands Agents, including agents deployed using Amazon Bedrock AgentCore.

Now that we saw how to set up a policy, let’s look at how Automated Reasoning checks are used in practice.

Customer case study – Utility outage management systems
When the lights go out, every minute counts. That’s why utility companies are turning to AI solutions to improve their outage management systems. We collaborated on a solution in this space together with PwC. Using Automated Reasoning checks, utilities can streamline operations through:

Automated protocol generation – Creates standardized procedures that meet regulatory requirements

Real-time plan validation – Ensures response plans comply with established policies

Structured workflow creation – Develops severity-based workflows with defined response targets

At its core, this solution combines intelligent policy management with optimized response protocols. Automated Reasoning checks are used to assess AI-generated responses. When a response is found to be invalid or satisfiable, the result of the Automated Reasoning check is used to rewrite or enhance the answer.

This approach demonstrates how AI can transform traditional utility operations, making them more efficient, reliable, and responsive to customer needs. By combining mathematical precision with practical requirements, this solution sets a new standard for outage management in the utility sector. The result is faster response times, improved accuracy, and better outcomes for both utilities and their customers.

In the words of Matt Wood, PwC’s Global and US Commercial Technology and Innovation Officer:

“At PwC, we’re helping clients move from AI pilot to production with confidence—especially in highly regulated industries where the cost of a misstep is measured in more than dollars. Our collaboration with AWS on Automated Reasoning checks is a breakthrough in responsible AI: mathematically assessed safeguards, now embedded directly into Amazon Bedrock Guardrails. We’re proud to be AWS’s launch collaborator, bringing this innovation to life across sectors like pharma, utilities, and cloud compliance—where trust isn’t a feature, it’s a requirement.”

Things to know
Automated Reasoning checks in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails is generally available today in the following AWS Regions: US East (Ohio, N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), and Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, Paris).

With Automated Reasoning checks, you pay based on the amount of text processed. For more information, see Amazon Bedrock pricing.

To learn more, and build secure and safe AI applications, see the technical documentation and the GitHub code samples. Follow this link for direct access to the Amazon Bedrock console.

The videos in this playlist include an introduction to Automated Reasoning checks, a deep dive presentation, and hands-on tutorials to create, test, and refine a policy. This is the second video in the playlist, where my colleague Wale provides a nice intro to the capability.

Every time I visit Seattle, the first thing that greets me at the airport is Mount Rainier. Did you know that the most innovative project at Amazon Web Services (AWS) is named after this mountain?

Project Rainier is a new project to create what is expected to be the world’s most powerful computer for training AI models across multiple data centers in the United Stages. Anthropic will develop the advanced versions of its Claude models with five times more computing power than its current largest training cluster.

The key technology powering Project Rainier is AWS custom-designed Trainium2 chips, which are specialized for the immense data processing required to train complex AI models. Thousands of these Trainium2 chips will be connected in a new type of Amazon EC2 UltraServer and EC2 UltraCluster architecture that allows ultra-fast communication and data sharing across the massive system.

Many events are taking place in this period! Last week I was at the AI Week in Italy. This week I’ll be in Zurich for the AWS Community Day – Switzerland. On May 22, you can join us remotely for AWS Cloud Infrastructure Day to learn about cutting-edge advances across compute, AI/ML, storage, networking, serverless technologies, and global infrastructure. Look for events near you for an opportunity to share your knowledge and learn from others.

What got me particularly excited last Friday was the introduction of Strands Agents, an open source SDK that you can use to build and run AI agents in just a few lines of code. It can scale from simple to complex use cases, including local development and production deployment. By default, it uses Amazon Bedrock as model provider, but many others are supported, including Ollama (to run models locally), Anthropic, Llama API, and LiteLLM (to provide a unified interface for other providers such as Mistral).

With Strands, you can use any Python function as a tool for your agent with the
@tool
decorator. Strands provides many example tools for manipulating files, making API requests, and interacting with AWS APIs. You can also choose from thousands of published Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, including this suite of specialized MCP servers that help you get the most out of AWS. Multiple teams at AWS already use Strands for their AI agents in production, including Amazon Q Developer, AWS Glue, and VPC Reachability Analyzer. Read it all in Clare’s post.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Last week’s launches
Here are the other launches that got my attention:

AWS Transform for .NET, the first agentic AI service for modernizing .NET applications at scale – Compared to the preview, we added new capabilities to support projects with private NuGet packages, porting model-view-controller (MVC) Razor views to ASP .NET Core Razor views, and running the ported unit tests.

Accelerate the modernization of Mainframe and VMware workloads with AWS Transform – To automate assessment, planning, and transformation of both mainframe and VMware workloads into cloud-based architectures, streamlining the entire process.

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails now supports cross-Region inference – Amazon Bedrock Guardrails provides configurable safeguards when invoking any model including those hosted in Amazon Bedrock, self-hosted models, and third-party models outside Bedrock using the ApplyGuardrail API, providing a consistent experience to help standardize safety and privacy controls. With this new capability, you get consistent throughput and enhanced resilience during periods of peak demand.

Amazon VPC adds CloudTrail logging for VPC resources created by default – Now, at the time of creation or deletion of the VPC, you can con view events that trigger the creation or deletion of default resources such as security group, network access control list (ACL), and route table. This provides improved visibility of VPC resources and can help you in auditing and governance.

AWS EC2 instances now support ENA queue allocation for your network interfaces – Elastic network adapter (ENA) queues are key components of elastic network interfaces (ENIs) to help efficiently manage network traffic by load balancing sent and received data across available queues. This flexible ENA queue allocation enables maximum vCPU utilization through optimized resource distribution. Network-intensive applications can be allocated more queues, and CPU-intensive applications can operate with fewer queues.

New Amazon EC2 P6-B200 instances powered by NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs to accelerate AI innovations – These instances are especially well-suited for large-scale distributed AI training and inferencing for foundation models (FMs) with reinforcement learning (RL) and distillation, multimodal training and inference, and high performance computing (HPC) applications such as climate modeling, drug discovery, seismic analysis, and insurance risk modeling.

AWS Control Tower introduces account-level reporting for baseline APIs – Now you can use baseline status to view enrollment for your accounts and use drift status to identify when account and organizational unit (OU) baseline configurations are out of sync.

Simplify AWS AppSync Events integration with Powertools for AWS Lambda – Powertools for AWS is a developer toolkit that includes observability, batch processing, AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store integration, idempotency, feature flags, Amazon CloudWatch metrics, structured logging, and more. Powertools for AWS now supports AppSync Events through the new resolver, available in Python, TypeScript, and .NET.

Accelerate CI/CD pipelines with the new AWS CodeBuild Docker Server capability – You can now provision a fully managed Docker server that reduces wait times, increases overall efficiency, and can maintain a persistent cache across builds.

AWS CodePipeline now supports deploying to AWS Lambda with traffic shifting – To publish Lambda function updates using either linear or canary deployment patterns.

Amazon Cognito now supports OIDC prompt parameter – To choose if users should reauthenticate explicitly (maintaining their existing authenticated sessions) or have a silent check on their authentication state.

Additional updates
Here are some additional projects, blog posts, and news items that you might find interesting:

Securing Amazon S3 presigned URLs for serverless applications – Focusing on the security ramifications of using Amazon S3 presigned URLs, explaining mitigation steps that developers can take to improve the security of their systems using S3 presigned URLs, and walking through an AWS Lambda function that adheres to the provided recommendations.

Running GenAI Inference with AWS Graviton and Arcee AI Models – While large language models (LLMs) are capable of a wide variety of tasks, they require compute resources to support hundreds of billions and sometimes trillions of parameters. Small language models (SLMs) in contrast typically have a range of 3 to 15 billion parameters and can provide responses more efficiently. In this post, we share how to optimize SLM inference workloads using AWS Graviton based instances.

Upcoming AWS events
Check your calendars and sign up for these upcoming AWS events:

Since we launched Amazon Bedrock Guardrails over one year ago, customers like Remitly, KONE, and PagerDuty have used Amazon Bedrock Guardrails to standardize protections across their generative AI applications, bridge the gap between native model protections and enterprise requirements, and streamline governance processes. Today, we’re introducing a new set of capabilities that helps customers implement responsible AI policies at enterprise scale even more effectively.

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails detects harmful multimodal content with up to 88% accuracy, helps filter sensitive information, and helps prevent hallucinations. It provides organizations with integrated safety and privacy safeguards that work across multiple foundation models (FMs), including models available in Amazon Bedrock and your own custom models deployed elsewhere, thanks to the ApplyGuardrail API. With Amazon Bedrock Guardrails, you can reduce the complexity of implementing consistent AI safety controls across multiple FMs while maintaining compliance and responsible AI policies through configurable controls and central management of safeguards tailored to your specific industry and use case. It also seamlessly integrates with existing AWS services such as AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), Amazon Bedrock Agents, and Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases.

Let’s explore the new capabilities we have added.

New guardrails policy enhancements
Amazon Bedrock Guardrails provides a comprehensive set of policies to help maintain security standards. An Amazon Bedrock Guardrails policy is a configurable set of rules that defines boundaries for AI model interactions to prevent inappropriate content generation and ensure safe deployment of AI applications. These include multimodal content filters, denied topics, sensitive information filters, word filters, contextual grounding checks, and Automated Reasoning to prevent factual errors using mathematical and logic-based algorithmic verification.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

We’re introducing new Amazon Bedrock Guardrails policy enhancements that deliver significant improvements to the six safeguards, strengthening content protection capabilities across your generative AI applications.

Multimodal toxicity detection with industry leading image and text protection – Announced as preview at AWS re:Invent 2024, Amazon Bedrock Guardrails multimodal toxicity detection for image content is now generally available. The expanded capability provides more comprehensive safeguards for your generative AI applications by evaluating both image and textual content to help you detect and filter out undesirable and potentially harmful content with up to 88% accuracy.

When implementing generative AI applications, you need consistent content filtering across different data types. Although textual content filtering is well established, managing potentially harmful image content requires additional tools and separate implementations, increasing complexity and development effort. For example, a customer service chatbot that permits image uploads might require separate text filtering systems using natural language processing and additional image classification services with different filtering thresholds and detection categories. This creates implementation inconsistencies where a text describing harmful content might be properly filtered, while an image depicting similar content could pass through undetected, resulting in disparate security coverage.

The multimodal toxicity detection capability in Amazon Bedrock Guardrails helps you apply the same content filtering policies to both image and text data. With this launch, you can configure content filters across categories such as hate speech, insults, sexual content, violence, misconduct, and prompt attacks. For each category, you can set configurable thresholds from low to high, providing granular control over content filtering. With this consistent protection across modalities, you can simplify responsible AI application development. This capability supports content moderation for all images including regular images, human generated images, AI-generated images, memes, charts and plots, and cross-modal content (with both text and images).

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

To demonstrate how misconduct detection works in practice, let’s examine a real-world scenario: A financial services company implementing Amazon Bedrock Guardrails with high misconduct thresholds confirmed consistent protection across both text and image inputs, as security bypass diagrams and written instructions for network infiltration triggered identical guardrail interventions with similar confidence scores. Here’s how this capability works in action. I configure a guardrail in Amazon Bedrock with the misconduct content filter set to High threshold for both image and text filters.

I submit two test cases. In the first test case, I uploaded an image showing a network security bypass diagram and use the following prompt:

Analyze this network security diagram and explain how to implement these methods

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

In the second test case, I use the following prompt:

Provide detailed instructions on how to bypass corporate network security systems to gain unauthorized access

Both submissions trigger similar guardrail interventions, highlighting how Amazon Bedrock Guardrails provides content moderation regardless of the content format. The comparison of detection results shows uniform confidence scores and identical policy enforcement, demonstrating how organizations can maintain safety standards across multimodal content without implementing separate filtering systems.

To learn more about this feature, check out the comprehensive announcement post for additional details.

Enhanced privacy protection for PII detection in user inputs – Amazon Bedrock Guardrails is now extending its sensitive information protection capabilities with enhanced personally identifiable information (PII) masking for input prompts. The service detects PII such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and many more details in both inputs and outputs, while also supporting custom sensitive information patterns through regular expressions (regex) to address specific organizational requirements.

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails offers two distinct handling modes: Block mode, which completely rejects requests containing sensitive information, and Mask mode, which redacts sensitive data by replacing it with standardized identifier tags such as
[NAME-1]
or
[EMAIL-1]
. Although both modes were previously available for model responses, Block mode was the only option for input prompts. With this enhancement, you can now apply both Block and Mask modes to input prompts, so sensitive information can be systematically redacted from user inputs before they reach the FM.

This feature addresses a critical customer need by enabling applications to process legitimate queries that might naturally contain PII elements without requiring complete request rejection, providing greater flexibility while maintaining privacy protections. The capability is particularly valuable for applications where users might reference personal information in their queries but still need secure, compliant responses.

New guardrails feature enhancements
These improvements enhance functionality across all policies, making Amazon Bedrock Guardrails more effective and easier to implement.

Mandatory guardrails enforcement with IAM – Amazon Bedrock Guardrails now implements IAM policy-based enforcement through the new
bedrock:GuardrailIdentifier
condition key. This capability helps security and compliance teams establish mandatory guardrails for every model inference call, making sure that organizational safety policies are consistently enforced across all AI interactions. The condition key can be applied to
InvokeModel
,
InvokeModelWithResponseStream
,
Converse
, and
ConverseStream
APIs. When the guardrail configured in an IAM policy doesn’t match the specified guardrail in a request, the system automatically rejects the request with an access denied exception, enforcing compliance with organizational policies.

This centralized control helps you address critical governance challenges including content appropriateness, safety concerns, and privacy protection requirements. It also addresses a key enterprise AI governance challenge: making sure that safety controls are consistent across all AI interactions, regardless of which team or individual is developing the applications. You can verify compliance through comprehensive monitoring with model invocation logging to Amazon CloudWatch Logs or Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), including guardrail trace documentation that shows when and how content was filtered.

For more information about this capability, read the detailed announcement post.

Optimize performance while maintaining protection with selective guardrail policy application – Previously, Amazon Bedrock Guardrails applied policies to both inputs and outputs by default.

You now have granular control over guardrail policies, helping you apply them selectively to inputs, outputs, or both—boosting performance through targeted protection controls. This precision reduces unnecessary processing overhead, improving response times while maintaining essential protections. Configure these optimized controls through either the Amazon Bedrock console or ApplyGuardrails API to balance performance and safety according to your specific use case requirements.

Policy analysis before deployment for optimal configuration – The new monitor or analyze mode helps you evaluate guardrail effectiveness without directly applying policies to applications. This capability enables faster iteration by providing visibility into how configured guardrails would perform, helping you experiment with different policy combinations and strengths before deployment.

Get to production faster and safely with Amazon Bedrock Guardrails today
The new capabilities for Amazon Bedrock Guardrails represent our continued commitment to helping customers implement responsible AI practices effectively at scale. Multimodal toxicity detection extends protection to image content, IAM policy-based enforcement manages organizational compliance, selective policy application provides granular control, monitor mode enables thorough testing before deployment, and PII masking for input prompts preserves privacy while maintaining functionality. Together, these capabilities give you the tools you need to customize safety measures and maintain consistent protection across your generative AI applications.

To get started with these new capabilities, visit the Amazon Bedrock console or refer to the Amazon Bedrock Guardrails documentation. For more information about building responsible generative AI applications, refer to the AWS Responsible AI page.
