The news that interested me the most last week was the DuckLabs acquisition. AWS has signed a definitive agreement to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind DuckDB, the popular open source analytical database that runs in-process and executes SQL directly against files like Parquet, CSV, and JSON. DuckDB stays open source under its independent foundation and the MIT license, and over time AWS plans to combine its speed at everyday queries with the enterprise scale of services like Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon Athena.

Co-founded by Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, DuckDB runs locally or on Amazon S3, which makes it remarkably fast for the everyday queries (a terabyte or less) that make up the bulk of real-world analytics. It also happens to pair beautifully with AI agents, which “poke” and experiment their way through data much like humans do. The co-founders will continue leading its technical direction while AWS combines DuckDB’s speed with analytics services like Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and Amazon SageMaker. For the bigger picture on why this matters, Andy Warfield, Vice President and Distinguished Engineer shared his thoughts on the post DuckDB and the changing physics of analytics on All Things Distributed.

Now, let’s get into this week’s AWS news…

Last week’s launches
Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

Amazon ECS now automatically detects and recovers container instances that lose agent connectivity – Amazon ECS now continuously monitors agent connectivity to the control plane and surfaces a new
AGENT_CONNECTIVITY
health event across AWS Fargate, Amazon ECS Managed Instances, and Amazon ECS on EC2. On Fargate and Managed Instances, ECS handles recovery automatically, draining tasks, launching replacements, and deregistering the impaired instance. On EC2, you can wire the event into your own workflow. Available at no additional cost in all AWS Commercial and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions.

AWS Lambda introduces public preview runtimes, starting with Node.js 26 and Python 3.15 – You can now test upcoming Lambda runtimes before they reach general availability. Preview runtimes use the same identifier as the eventual GA version, so your functions graduate automatically with no action required. Third-party tools and deployment frameworks can also validate compatibility ahead of GA. Not meant for production yet (breaking changes are possible), but a great way to get ahead of your next upgrade. Available in all AWS commercial, AWS GovCloud (US), and China Regions.

AWS IoT Core adds a native InfluxDB rule action – You can now route time-series data from your IoT devices straight into InfluxDB (Amazon Timestream-managed or self-hosted) without writing custom code or standing up an intermediate service. IoT Core formats data into InfluxDB’s line protocol and supports device-side and server-side batching. Available in all AWS Regions where Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB is offered.

Amazon GameLift Servers now includes enhanced DDoS protection – Your game servers now get automatic protection against network and transport layer (layers 3 and 4) DDoS attacks – UDP reflection, SYN floods, and similar vectors – with nothing to enable or opt into. Built on top of AWS Shield Standard with gaming-optimized traffic shaping, it turns on the moment your servers start running (Server SDK 5) at no extra cost. It’s available in all supported GameLift Servers Regions except China (Beijing) and China (Ningxia).

Amazon SageMaker HyperPod expands support for Ray – You can now run Ray workloads on SageMaker HyperPod with built-in observability, resilient training, and accelerated inference. Create and manage Ray clusters from Amazon SageMaker Studio, attach JupyterLab or your local IDE so a multi-node cluster behaves like a local dev environment, and get auto-provisioned Grafana dashboards. Node auto recovery, hung job detection, and tiered checkpointing keep large training runs healthy, while Ray Serve adds a tiered KV cache for inference. Your existing open source Ray code runs unchanged. Available for HyperPod clusters orchestrated by Amazon EKS.

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the What’s New with AWS page.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Other AWS news
Here are some additional posts and resources that you might find interesting:

Happy 20th birthday, Amazon EC2! – Amazon EC2 turns 20. Channy Yun looks back at how EC2 grew from a single
m1.small
instance type in one Region to more than 1,200 instance types across 39 Regions, along with the custom silicon journey from the first Graviton to Graviton5 and Trainium3. A fun and worthwhile read on the service that still underpins so much of AWS – including Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, AWS Lambda, Amazon SageMaker, and Amazon Bedrock.

Agentic Resource Discovery (ARD): an open specification for agent discovery – As organizations scale up agents, tools, and MCP servers, those resources end up scattered across clouds, on-premises infrastructure, and SaaS platforms – each with its own registry and metadata. ARD is a new open specification (Apache 2.0) that defines a common way to describe and discover agentic resources, so publishers “describe once” and consumers “discover everywhere” – think DNS, but for agents. AWS contributed feedback but doesn’t own the spec, and it complements the AWS Agent Registry by letting you federate across catalogs without migrating.

Get started with the Agent Toolkit for AWS in the AWS CLI – A single AWS CLI command (
aws configure agent-toolkit
) now equips AI coding agents like Kiro, Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor with curated, up-to-date AWS knowledge and a secure connection to thousands of AWS APIs through the AWS MCP Server. If you build with an AI coding assistant, this helps it choose the right services, use modern APIs, and follow security best practices – so it gets AWS code right more often the first time.

Upcoming AWS events
Check your calendar and sign up for upcoming AWS events:

AWS Summits – Free in-person events where builders come together to learn, connect, and explore the latest in cloud and AI. Upcoming stops include Zurich (September 2), São Paulo (September 3), Tel Aviv (September 10), and Dubai (September 30). Can’t attend in person? You can stream sessions through the Global Livestream and On-Demand Hub. I’ll be presenting two sessions on generative AI and Amazon Bedrock at the São Paulo Summit – if you’re there, come say hello.

AWS Community Days – Community-led conferences where content is planned, sourced, and delivered by community leaders. Upcoming events include JAWS SONIC 2026 in Tokyo (September 5) and Warsaw, Poland (September 8).

Last week AWS Summit New York City brought together thousands of customers, partners, and builders for a free, one-day event showcasing the latest in cloud and AI innovation. Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of Agentic AI at AWS unveiled a stack of AI launches in his keynote, all built around one thesis: agents that compound value over time.

Agents for working – You can launch autonomous agents and access a smarter activity feed with new Amazon Quick features, which now let you create and run multi-step agents directly in the desktop app and consolidates email, Slack, calendar, and tasks into a single prioritized view with personalized rules.

Agents for securing – You can shift from reactive to proactive security with AWS Continuum, a new AI-native security service that reasons, validates, and acts at machine speed across the full code vulnerability lifecycle. AWS Security Agent (now part of AWS Continuum) adds new features: threat modeling; pull request code scanning with remediation across major Git platforms; and IDE integrations via Kiro power, Claude Code plugin, and MCP.

Agents for building – You can write, ship, and modernize code in one continuous loop with Kiro, AWS DevOps Agent, and AWS Transform. Kiro introduces a native iOS app; AWS DevOps Agent adds release management capabilities to assess code changes before production; and AWS Transform continuous modernization reduces tech debt autonomously.

Agents customers create – You can go from agent idea to production in minutes with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, which now includes a GA harness for infrastructure and orchestration, Web Search, Managed Knowledge Base, policy integrations with Guardrails, and the new AWS Context service for mapping organizational data relationships.

To learn more, visit the Summit recap from our top announcements blog post and Amazon News post.

Last week’s launches

Here are last week’s launches that caught my attention:

AWS Local Zone in Hanoi, Vietnam  —This new Local Zone is one of the first AWS Local Zones in the Asia Pacific with support for Amazon S3 and Amazon EBS Local Snapshots, enabling customers to meet data residency requirements by storing and backing up data locally. To get started, enable the Hanoi Local Zone (
ap-southeast-1-han-1a
) from the Regions and Zones tab in the AWS Global View or by using the ModifyAvailabilityZoneGroup API.

AWS Blocks, an open-source TypeScript framework for application developers (preview) — AWS Blocks runs a fully functional local environment with Postgres, authentication, and real-time messaging, no AWS account required. When you’re ready to deploy, the same application code runs on production AWS services with zero changes, and you can drop into AWS CDK at any point for direct resource configuration.

Grok 4.3 from xAI in Amazon Bedrock —You can use the Grok 4.3 model on Amazon Bedrock, giving you even more choice as you build generative AI applications across reasoning, agentic, and enterprise workflows. Grok 4.3 runs on a new inference engine in Bedrock designed for price performance, with support for tool calling, structured output, and response streaming.

Amazon S3 annotations: attach rich, queryable context directly to your objects — Amazon S3 now lets you attach up to 1 GB of rich, mutable, and queryable context directly to your objects using annotations, purpose-built for AI agents and autonomous workflows that need to discover, understand, and act on data at scale without maintaining separate metadata systems.

Amazon ECS announces faster service auto scaling — Amazon ECS service auto scaling now detects and responds to load changes faster with support for high resolution (20-second) metrics and metric publishing optimizations. In AWS benchmarking tests, time to trigger scale-out improved from 363 seconds to 86 seconds (76% faster), and total time to scale and provision new tasks improved from 386 seconds to 109 seconds (72% faster).

Amazon EC2 G7 instances accelerated by NVIDIA RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs — AWS is the first major cloud provider to support NVIDIA RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs. G7 instances are accelerated by these GPUs with custom sixth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, delivering up to 4.6x AI inference performance and up to 2.1x graphics performance compared to G6 instances.

Strands Agents introduces new capabilities — Strands is an open source toolkit for building production agents. You can now use better context management in Harness SDK, a new isolated execution environment with Strands Shell, and chaos testing and red teaming in Strands Evals.

AWS Management Console Private Access – You can access the AWS Console from VPCs without internet connectivity, allowing enterprises to manage their AWS infrastructure through the console while maintaining strict network security controls in air-gapped environments.

AWS Marketplace Storefront is now generally available – AWS Partners can create and deploy their own branded catalog of solutions and services on their website or application in hours. Channel Partners and Independent Software Vendors can now simplify how they manage their cloud marketplace business and make it easier for customers to discover and purchase their solutions from AWS Marketplace.

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) Advanced DNS Security on Amazon Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall (preview) – You can now enforce DNS threat protections from Palo Alto Networks directly on Route 53 DNS Firewall rules, without deploying separate firewalls or modifying VPC configurations — by subscribing to PANW from the DNS Firewall console through the embedded AWS Marketplace widget.

Wow, can you all believe it? We’re nearing the end of the year already. Next thing you know, AWS re:Invent will be here! This is our biggest event that takes place every year in Las Vegas from December 1st to December 5th where we reveal and release many of the things that we’ve been working on. If you haven’t already, buy your tickets to AWS re:Invent 2025 to experience it in person. If you can’t make it to Vegas, don’t worry, make sure to stay tuned here on the AWS News Blog where will be covering many of the announcements as they happen.

However, there are plenty of new exciting new releases between now and then, so, as usual, let’s take a quick look at some of the highlights from last week so you can catch up on what’s been recently launched, starting with one of the most popular services: Amazon S3!

S3 updates
The S3 team has been working really hard to make working with S3 even better. This month alone has seen releases such as bulk target selection for S3 Batch Operations, support for conditional deletes in S3 general purpose buckets, increased file size and archive scanning limits for malware protection, and more.

Last week was another S3 milestone with the addition of a preview in the AWS Console for Amazon S3 Tables. You can now take a quick peek at your S3 Tables right from the console, making it easier to understand their data structure and content without writing any SQL. This viewer-friendly feature is ready to use across all regions where S3 Tables are supported, with costs limited to just the S3 requests needed to display your table preview.

Amazon Q Developer – You can now use an enhanced agent within the Amazon Q command line interface (CLI) to give you more dynamic conversations, help you read and write files locally, query AWS resources, or create code. This enhanced CLI agent is powered by Anthropic’s most intelligent model to date, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Read more about this agenic coding experience and how to try it out. Here’s a visual demo of the new capabilities of Amazon Q CLI, by Nathan Peck.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Amazon Q Business – Now supports the ingestion of audio and video data. This capability streamlines information retrieval, enhances knowledge sharing, and improves decision-making processes, by making multimedia content as searchable and accessible as text-based documents.

Amazon Bedrock – Bedrock Data Automation is now generally available, so you can automate the generation of valuable insights from unstructured multimodal content such as documents, images, video, and audio files. Learn more and see code examples in my blog post. Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases support for GraphRAG is now also generally available. GraphRAG is a capability that enhances Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) by incorporating graph data and delivers more comprehensive, relevant, and explainable responses by leveraging relationships within your data, improving how Generative AI applications retrieve and synthesize information.

Amazon Nova – The Amazon Nova Pro foundation model now supports latency-optimized inference in preview on Amazon Bedrock, enabling faster response times and improved responsiveness for generative AI applications.

AWS Step Functions – Workflow Studio for VS Code is now available, a visual builder you can use to compose workflows on a canvas.
Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

AWS Lambda – Now supports Amazon CloudWatch Logs Live Tail in VS Code. We previously introduced support for Live Tail in the Lambda console to simplify how you can view and analyze Lambda logs in real time. Now, you can also monitor Lambda function logs in real time while staying within the VS Code development environment.

AWS Amplify – Now supports HttpOnly cookies for server-rendered Next.js applications when using Amazon Cognito’s managed login. Because cookies with the HttpOnly attribute can’t be accessed by JavaScript, your applications can gain an additional layer of protection against cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

Amazon Cognito – You can now customize access tokens for machine-to-machine (M2M) flows, enabling you to implement fine-grained authorization in your applications, APIs, and workloads. M2M authorization is commonly used for automated processes such as scheduled data synchronization tasks, event-driven workflows, microservices communication, or real-time data streaming between systems.

AWS CodeBuild – Now supports builds on Linux x86, Arm, and Windows on-demand fleets directly on the host operating system without containerization. In this way, you can now execute build commands that require direct access to the host system resources or have specific requirements that make containerization challenging. For example, this is useful when building device drivers, running system-level tests, or working with tools that require host machine access. CodeBuild has also added support for Node 22, Python 3.13, and Go 1.23 in Linux x86, Arm, Windows, and macOS platforms.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Bottlerocket – The open source Linux-based operating system purpose-built for containers now supports NVIDIA’s Multi-Instance GPU (MIG) to help partition NVIDIA GPUs into multiple GPU instances on Kubernetes nodes and maximize GPU resource utilization. Bottlerocket now also supports AWS Neuron accelerated instance types and provides a default bootstrap container image that simplifies system setup tasks.

Amazon GameLift – Introducing Amazon GameLift Streams, a new managed capability that developers can use to stream games at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second to any device with a WebRTC-enabled browser. To learn more, explore Donnie’s blog post.

Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP – Starting March 5, 2025, the SnapLock licensing fees for data stored in SnapLock volumes has been eliminated, making it more cost-effective.

Since 2016, game developers have been using Amazon GameLift to power games with dedicated, scalable server hosting capable of supporting 100M concurrent users (CCU) in a single game. Responding to customer requests for additional managed compute capabilities beyond game servers, we’re announcing Amazon GameLift Streams — a new capability in Amazon GameLift to help game publishers build and deliver global, direct-to-player game streaming experiences. As part of this announcement, existing capabilities in Amazon GameLift are now known as Amazon Gamelift Servers, continuing to serve hundreds of developers including industry leaders Ubisoft, Zynga, WB Games, and Meta.

Amazon GameLift Streams helps you deliver game streaming experiences at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second across devices including iOS, Android, and PCs. In just a few clicks, you can deploy games built with a variety of 3D engines, without modifications, onto fully-managed cloud-based GPU instances and stream games through the AWS Network Backbone directly to any device with a web browser.

Amazon GameLift Streams helps you distribute your games direct-to-players, without having to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure and software development to build your own service. Players can start gaming in just a few seconds, without waiting for downloads or installs.

Here’s a quick look at Amazon GameLift Streams:

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

You can use the Amazon GameLift Streams SDK to integrate with your existing identity services, storefronts, game launchers, websites, or newly created experiences such as playable demos, and begin streaming to players. You can monitor active streams and usage from within the AWS console, and seamlessly scale your streaming infrastructure across multiple regions on the AWS global network to reach more players around the world with low-latency gameplay. Amazon GameLift Streams is the only solution that enables you to upload your game content onto fully-managed GPU instances in the cloud and start streaming in minutes, with little or no modification of your code.

Players can access AAA, AA, and indie games on PCs, phones, tablets, smart TVs, or any device with a WebRTC-enabled browser. Amazon GameLift Streams allows you to dynamically scale streaming capacity to match player demand, ensuring you only pay for what you need. You can choose from a selection of GPU instances that offer a range of price performance, and rely on the built-in security of AWS to protect your intellectual property.

Let’s get started
To begin using Amazon GameLift Streams, I need an existing Amazon GameLift Streams implementation. I prepare my game files by following the Amazon GameLift Streams documentation.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Then, I’ll upload my files to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). I can use the AWS Management Console or this AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) command to upload my game files:

aws s3 sync my-game-folder s3://my-bucket/my-game-path

The next step is to create an Amazon GameLift Streams application. I navigate to the Amazon GameLift Streams console. This is how the new AWS GameLift Streams console looks:

On the Amazon GameLift Streams console, I choose Create application.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

In the Runtime settings, I select the runtime environment for my game application.

Then, I need to select my S3 bucket and folder from the previous step, then set the path to my game’s main executable.

I also have the option to configure the automatic transfer of application-generated log files into a S3 bucket. After I’m done with this configuration, I choose Create application.

After my application setup is completed, I need to create a stream group, a collection of compute resources to run and stream the application. I navigate to Stream groups in the left navigation pane of the Amazon GameLift Streams console.

On this page, I define a description for my new stream group.

Here, I select the capabilities and pricing of my stream group. Since my application is using Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Base, I make sure to select one of the compatible stream classes.

Next, I need to link with the application I created in the previous step.

On the Configure stream settings page, I can configure additional locations for my stream group, bringing in additional capacity from other AWS Regions. There are two capacity options that I can choose, always-on capacity and on-demand capacity. The default capacity setting provides one streaming slot, which is sufficient for initial testing.

Then, I need to review my configuration and choose Create stream group.

With stream groups configured, I can test my game streaming. I navigate to the Test stream page on the console to launch my application as a stream. I select this stream group and select Choose.

On the next page, I can configure any command line arguments or environment variables to run my application. I don’t need any extra configurations and choose Test stream.

Then, I can see that my application is running as expected. I can also interact with my game. This test helps me verify that my game works properly in streaming mode and serves as an initial proof of concept.

After I’ve confirmed everything works, I can integrate the Web SDK into my own website. The Web SDK and AWS Software Development Kit (AWS SDK) with Amazon GameLift Streams APIs help me to embed game streams, similar to what I tested in the console, into any web page I manage.
