Some numbers are hard to picture until you sit with them for a moment. Last week we published the Prime Day 2026 metrics, and the one that stuck with me is 2.3 quadrillion: the daily requests Amazon ElastiCache peaked at during the event. Prime Day ran back in June, so this post always lands as a retrospective, and that gap is part of what makes it worth reading. By the time the numbers reach you, the only evidence that any of it happened is that nothing went wrong.

The rest of the week pulled in a different direction: smaller, cheaper, and more constrained. Claude Haiku 5.5 arrived on Amazon Bedrock at roughly 75 percent less than Haiku 4.5, Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic made voice agents quicker on their feet, and Strands Box showed up to put real boundaries around what an agent is allowed to do. Now, let’s get into this week’s AWS news…

Headlines
All the numbers: Amazon Prime Day 2026 powered by AWS is the latest entry in a tradition that goes back to 2016, and the scale is still difficult to hold in your head. Over the four days of Prime Day, Amazon DynamoDB processed more than 59 trillion requests while peaking at 192 million requests per second, and kept single-digit millisecond responses throughout. AWS Lambda handled over 2.3 trillion invocations per day. Amazon EBS peaked above 24.8 trillion I/O operations, moving more than an exabyte of data daily. Amazon ECS launched an average of 158.3 million tasks per day on AWS Fargate, a 47.7 percent jump over last year, and AWS Graviton powered up to 49 percent of the Amazon EC2 compute that Amazon.com used.

The number I keep coming back to, though, isn’t a throughput record. The team ran more than 44,000 AWS Fault Injection Service experiments ahead of the event, more than six times what they ran in 2025. Those are deliberate failures injected on purpose, months in advance, so that the trillions of requests above turn into an ordinary shopping afternoon. If you’re preparing for your own peak moment, AWS Countdown Premium is built for exactly that kind of planning.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Last week’s launches
Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

Claude Haiku 5.5 is now available on AWS – You can now use the fastest model in the Claude 5.5 family on Amazon Bedrock and Claude Platform on AWS, at around 75 percent less than Claude Haiku 4.5 for most tasks. It’s the first Haiku with effort controls, so you can tune cost against intelligence per task instead of fixing one setting for a whole workload. It pairs naturally with Claude Opus 5.5: Opus plans and makes the judgment calls, and because Haiku is fast and cheap, you can run many Haiku subagents in parallel for routing, classification, and small code changes across many files.

Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic for voice agents – You can now build real-time voice agents on a speech-to-speech Amazon Nova model with better reasoning, instruction following, and tool-calling accuracy, plus lower latency. That combination matters for multi-step work: a support agent can look up an order, check return eligibility, and start the return inside one conversation. It keeps expressive voices in seven languages, controllable turn-taking, and a 256K context window, and pairs with Strands Bidi Agents, now generally available, to get a production voice agent going in a few lines of code.

Amazon GuardDuty RDS Protection now detects data exfiltration and destruction – Amazon GuardDuty now looks past login anomalies to the queries themselves on Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL. RDS Protection for data activity builds behavioral baselines and uses ML-based anomaly detection plus threat intelligence to flag unusual data access, with no agents, extra infrastructure, or database configuration changes. This closes a real gap: once an attacker has valid credentials from phishing or a misconfiguration, their queries can look indistinguishable from your application’s.

AWS Lambda supports OAuth for self-managed Apache Kafka event sources – You can now authenticate Lambda Kafka consumers through your enterprise identity provider, such as Amazon Cognito or Okta. Event source mappings previously supported only SASL/PLAIN, SASL/SCRAM, and mTLS, which left teams in regulated industries unable to use Kafka ESM at all. Now you get the automatic scaling, batching, error handling, and event filtering of Kafka ESM with the same identity governance you apply everywhere else. It works with self-hosted clusters and managed offerings including Confluent Cloud, Aiven, and Redpanda.

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the What’s New with AWS page.

Other AWS news
Here are some additional posts and resources that you might find interesting:

Introducing Strands Box: AI agent sandboxes powered by Dogwood – As more of us let agents run shell commands and call APIs without approving every step, isolation alone stops being enough. Strands Box is an open source sandbox (Apache 2.0, developer preview) that combines OS-level containment with fine-grained policies written in Dogwood, so permissions can depend on what the agent has already done. You can say “let the agent post to the incident channel, but no more than three times every 10 minutes” and have that enforced from outside the agent’s process. It also keeps real credentials out of the agent’s environment by attaching them at an egress gateway.

Upcoming AWS events
Check your calendar and sign up for upcoming AWS events:

AWS re:Invent – re:Invent returns to Las Vegas from November 30 to December 4, and reserved seating is now open. The session catalog is live, so register and claim your spots in chalk talks, workshops, and builders’ sessions before they fill up.

At the New York City Summit, I delivered a workshop called Building AI architectures with AWS Serverless, and it was a lot of fun watching builders wire up agents and serverless services to solve real problems in a single afternoon. This week I am heading down to the Washington, DC Summit, which always puts a spotlight on innovation in the public sector. If you are going to be there, come say hello.

A question I hear a lot at these events is how teams can put AI to work without waiting on a long engineering backlog, and this week’s biggest launch speaks directly to that, with Amazon Connect Customer introducing a no-code way for business teams to design AI powered customer experiences themselves. Now, let’s get into this week’s AWS news.

<ins>Headlines

</ins>
Amazon Connect Customer launched the Agentic CX designer (NLX) in preview, a no-code canvas for designing and deploying AI powered self service experiences. Business teams can build and launch voice and digital experiences that bring agentic and deterministic AI together in one governed flow, going from design to testing and simulation to production ready experiences in weeks rather than months. The launch also includes Live Sync in preview, a patented technology that drives a customer’s web or mobile experience in real time as they speak or type. A caller can complete a form or pull up the right product page without ever leaving the conversation. To see how this reshapes who designs customer experience, read the blog post on how the business user is the new architect of customer experience.

<ins>Last week’s launches

</ins>
Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

AWS Lambda MicroVMs – A new serverless compute primitive that gives each user or job VM level isolation with near instant launch and resume speeds, plus the ability to suspend and resume execution for up to 8 hours. Built on Firecracker, it is made for running user or AI generated code in multi-tenant applications without managing virtualization infrastructure or trading off isolation, speed, and state.

At re:Invent 2025, we introduced a completely re-imagined AWS Security Hub that unifies AWS security services, including Amazon GuardDuty and Amazon Inspector into a single experience. This unified experience automatically and continuously analyzes security findings in combination to help you prioritize and respond to your critical security risks.

Today, we’re announcing AWS Security Hub Extended, a plan of Security Hub that simplifies how you procure, deploy, and integrate a full-stack enterprise security solution across endpoint, identity, email, network, data, browser, cloud, AI, and security operations. With the Extended plan, you can expand your security portfolio beyond AWS to help protect your enterprise estate through a curated selection of AWS Partner solutions, including 7AI, Britive, CrowdStrike, Cyera, Island, Noma, Okta, Oligo, Opti, Proofpoint, SailPoint, Splunk, a Cisco company, Upwind, and Zscaler.

With AWS as the seller of record, you benefit from pre-negotiated pay-as-you-go pricing, a single bill, and no long-term commitments. You can also get unified security operations experience within Security Hub and unified Level 1 support for AWS Enterprise Support customers. You told us that managing multiple procurement cycles and vendor negotiations was creating unnecessary complexity, costing you time and resources. In response, we’ve curated these partner offerings for you to establish more comprehensive protection across your entire technology stack through a single, simplified experience.

Security findings from all participating solutions are emitted in the Open Cybersecurity Schema Framework (OCSF) schema and automatically aggregated in AWS Security Hub. With the Extended plan, you can combine AWS and partner security solutions to quickly identify and respond to risks that span boundaries.

Amazon Prime Day 2025 was the biggest Amazon Prime Day shopping event ever, setting records for both sales volume and total items sold during the 4-day event. Prime members saved billions while shopping Amazon’s millions of deals during the event.

This year marked a significant transformation in the Prime Day experience through advancements in the generative AI offerings from Amazon and AWS. Customers used Alexa+—the Amazon next-generation personal assistant now available in early access to millions of customers—along with the AI-powered shopping assistant, Rufus, and AI Shopping Guides. These features, built on more than 15 years of cloud innovation and machine learning expertise from AWS, combined with deep retail and consumer experience from Amazon, helped customers quickly discover deals and get product information, complementing the fast, free delivery that Prime members enjoy year-round.

As part of our annual tradition to tell you about how AWS powered Prime Day for record-breaking sales, I want to share the services and chart-topping metrics from AWS that made your amazing shopping experience possible.

Prime Day 2025 – all the numbers
During the weeks leading up to big shopping events like Prime Day, Amazon fulfillment centers and delivery stations work to get ready and ensure operations run efficiently and safely. For example, the Amazon automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) operates a global fleet of industrial mobile robots that move goods around Amazon fulfillment centers.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

AWS Outposts, a fully managed service that extends the AWS experience on-premises, powers software applications that manage the command-and-control of Amazon ASRS and supports same-day and next-day deliveries through low-latency processing of critical robotic commands.

During Prime Day 2025, AWS Outposts at one of the largest Amazon fulfillment centers sent more than 524 million commands to over 7,000 robots, reaching peak volumes of 8 million commands per hour—a 160 percent increase compared to Prime Day 2024.

Here are some more interesting, mind-blowing metrics:

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) – During Prime Day 2025, AWS Graviton, a family of processors designed to deliver the best price performance for cloud workloads running in Amazon EC2, powered more than 40 percent of the Amazon EC2 compute used by Amazon.com. Amazon also deployed over 87,000 AWS Inferentia and AWS Trainium chips – custom silicon chips for deep learning and generative AI training and inference – to power Amazon Rufus for Prime Day.

Amazon SageMaker AI — Amazon SageMaker AI, a fully managed service that brings together a broad set of tools to enable high-performance, low-cost machine learning (ML), processed more than 626 billion inference requests during Prime Day 2025.

Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) and AWS Fargate– Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) is a fully managed container orchestration service that works seamlessly with AWS Fargate, a serverless compute engine for containers. During Prime Day 2025, Amazon ECS launched an average of 18.4 million tasks per day on AWS Fargate, representing a 77 percent increase from the previous year’s Prime Day average.

AWS Fault Injection Service (AWS FIS) – We ran over 6,800 AWS FIS experiments—over eight times more than we conducted in 2024—to test resilience and ensure Amazon.com remains highly available on Prime Day. This significant increase was made possible by two improvements: new Amazon ECS support for network fault injection experiments on AWS Fargate, and the integration of FIS testing in continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.

AWS Lambda – AWS Lambda, a serverless compute service that lets you run code without managing infrastructure, handled over 1.7 trillion invocations per day during Prime Day 2025.

Amazon API Gateway – During Prime Day 2025, Amazon API Gateway, a fully managed service that makes it easy to create, maintain, and secure APIs at any scale, processed over 1 trillion internal service requests—a 30 percent increase in requests on average per day compared to Prime Day 2024.

Amazon CloudFront – Amazon CloudFront, a content delivery network (CDN) service that securely delivers content with low latency and high transfer speeds, delivered over 3 trillion HTTP requests during the global week of Prime Day 2025, a 43 percent increase in requests compared to Prime Day 2024.

Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) – During Prime Day 2025, Amazon EBS, our high-performance block storage service, peaked at 20.3 trillion I/O operations, moving up to an exabyte of data daily.

Amazon Aurora – On Prime Day, Amazon Aurora, a relational database management system (RDBMS) built for high performance and availability at global scale for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and DSQL, processed 500 billion transactions, stored 4,071 terabytes of data, and transferred 999 terabytes of data.

Amazon DynamoDB – Amazon DynamoDB, a serverless, fully managed, distributed NoSQL database, powers multiple high-traffic Amazon properties and systems including Alexa, the Amazon.com sites, and all Amazon fulfillment centers. Over the course of Prime Day, these sources made tens of trillions of calls to the DynamoDB API. DynamoDB maintained high availability while delivering single-digit millisecond responses and peaking at 151 million requests per second.

Amazon ElastiCache – During Prime Day, Amazon ElastiCache, a fully managed caching service delivering microsecond latency, peaked at serving over 1.5 quadrillion daily requests and over 1.4 trillion requests in a minute.

Amazon Kinesis Data Streams – Amazon Kinesis Data Streams, a fully managed serverless data streaming service, processed a peak of 807 million records per second during Prime Day 2025.

Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS) – During Prime Day 2025, Amazon SQS – a fully managed message queuing service for microservices, distributed systems, and serverless applications – set a new peak traffic record of 166 million messages per second.

Amazon GuardDuty – During Prime Day 2025, Amazon GuardDuty, an intelligent threat detection service, monitored an average of 8.9 trillion log events per hour, a 48.9 percent increase from last year’s Prime Day.

Now a tradition, the blog team wrote a re:Cap post to summarize the announcements and link to some of the top blog posts.

To further summarize, several new security innovations were announced, including enhanced IAM Access Analyzer capabilities, MFA enforcement for root users, and threat intelligence integration with AWS Network Firewall. Other notable updates include exportable public SSL/TLS certificates from AWS Certificate Manager, a simplified AWS WAF console experience, and a new AWS Shield feature for proactive network security (in preview). Additionally, AWS Security Hub has been enhanced for risk prioritization (Preview), and Amazon GuardDuty now supports Amazon EKS clusters.

But my favorite announcement came from the Amazon Verified Permissions team. They released an open source package for Express.js, enabling developers to implement external fine-grained authorization for web application APIs. This simplifies authorization integration, reducing code complexity and improving application security.

The Cedar schema is generated from an OpenAPI specification and formatted for use with the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI).

Let’s look at last week’s other new announcements.

Last week’s launches
Apart from re:Inforce, here are the launches that got my attention.

Kafka customers use Avro and Protobuf formats for efficient data storage, fast serialization and deserialization, schema evolution support, and interoperability between different programming languages. They utilize schema registries to manage, evolve, and validate schemas before data enters processing pipelines. Previously, you were required to write custom code within your Lambda function to validate, deserialize, and filter events when using these data formats. With this launch, Lambda natively supports Avro and Protobuf, as well as integration with GSR, CCSR, and SCSR. This enables you to process your Kafka events using these data formats without writing custom code. Additionally, you can optimize costs through event filtering to prevent unnecessary function invocations.

Amazon S3 Express One Zone now supports atomic renaming of objects with a single API call – The
RenameObject
API simplifies data management in S3 directory buckets by transforming a multi-step rename operation into a single API call. This means you can now rename objects in S3 Express One Zone by specifying an existing object’s name as the source and the new name as the destination within the same S3 directory bucket. With no data movement involved, this capability accelerates applications like log file management, media processing, and data analytics, while also lowering costs. For instance, renaming a 1-terabyte log file can now complete in milliseconds, instead of hours, significantly accelerating applications and reducing costs.

Valkey introduces GLIDE 2.0 with support for Go, OpenTelemetry, and pipeline batching – AWS, in partnership with Google and the Valkey community, announces the general availability of General Language Independent Driver for the Enterprise (GLIDE) 2.0. This is the latest release of one of AWS’s official open-source Valkey client libraries. Valkey, the most permissive open-source alternative to Redis, is stewarded by the Linux Foundation and will always remain open-source. Valkey GLIDE is a reliable, high-performance, multi-language client that supports all Valkey commands

Valkey GLIDE 2.0 extends its multi-language support to Go (contributed by Google), joining Java, Python, and Node.js to provide a consistent, fully compatible API experience across all four languages. More language support is on the way. With this release, Valkey GLIDE now supports OpenTelemetry, an open-source, vendor-neutral framework that enables developers to generate, collect, and export telemetry data and critical client-side performance insights. Additionally, GLIDE 2.0 introduces batching capabilities, reducing network overhead and latency for high-frequency use cases by allowing multiple commands to be grouped and executed as a single operation.

Today, I’m happy to announce Amazon GuardDuty Extended Threat Detection with expanded coverage for Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), building upon the capabilities we introduced in our AWS re:Invent 2024 announcement of Amazon GuardDuty Extended Threat Detection: AI/ML attack sequence identification for enhanced cloud security.

Security teams managing Kubernetes workloads often struggle to detect sophisticated multistage attacks that target containerized applications. These attacks can involve container exploitation, privilege escalation, and unauthorized movement within Amazon EKS clusters. Traditional monitoring approaches might detect individual suspicious events, but often miss the broader attack pattern that spans across these different data sources and time periods.

GuardDuty Extended Threat Detection introduces a new critical severity finding type, which automatically correlates security signals across Amazon EKS audit logs, runtime behaviors of processes associated with EKS clusters, malware execution in EKS clusters, and AWS API activity to identify sophisticated attack patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. For example, GuardDuty can now detect attack sequences in which a threat actor exploits a container application, obtains privileged service account tokens, and then uses these elevated privileges to access sensitive Kubernetes secrets or AWS resources.

This new capability uses GuardDuty correlation algorithms to observe and identify sequences of actions that indicate potential compromise. It evaluates findings across protection plans and other signal sources to identify common and emerging attack patterns. For each attack sequence detected, GuardDuty provides comprehensive details, including potentially impacted resources, timeline of events, actors involved, and indicators used to detect the sequence. The findings also map observed activities to MITRE ATT&CK® tactics and techniques and remediation recommendations based on AWS best practices, helping security teams understand the nature of the threat.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

To enable Extended Threat Detection for EKS, you need at least one of these features enabled: EKS Protection or Runtime Monitoring. For maximum detection coverage, we recommend enabling both to enhance detection capabilities. EKS Protection monitors control plane activities through audit logs, and Runtime Monitoring observes behaviors within containers. Together, they create a complete view of your EKS clusters, enabling GuardDuty to detect complex attack patterns.

How it works
To use the new Amazon GuardDuty Extended Threat Detection for EKS clusters, go to the GuardDuty console to enable EKS Protection in your account. From the Region selector in the upper-right corner, select the Region where you want to enable EKS Protection. In the navigation pane, choose EKS Protection. On the EKS Protection page, review the current status and choose Enable. Select Confirm to save your selection.

After it’s enabled, GuardDuty immediately starts monitoring EKS audit logs from your EKS clusters without requiring any additional configuration. GuardDuty consumes these audit logs directly from the EKS control plane through an independent stream, which doesn’t affect any existing logging configurations. For multi-account environments, only the delegated GuardDuty administrator account can enable or disable EKS Protection for member accounts and configure auto-enable settings for new accounts joining the organization.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

To enable Runtime Monitoring, choose Runtime Monitoring in the navigation pane. Under the Configuration tab, choose Enable to enable Runtime Monitoring for your account.

Now, you can view from the Summary dashboard the attack sequences and critical findings specifically related to Kubernetes cluster compromise. You can observe that GuardDuty identifies complex attack patterns in Kubernetes environments, such as credential compromise events and suspicious activities within EKS clusters. The visual representation of findings by severity, resource impact, and attack types gives you a holistic view of your Amazon EKS security posture. This means you can prioritize the most critical threats to your containerized workloads.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

The Finding details page provides visibility into complex attack sequences targeting EKS clusters, helping you understand the full scope of potential compromises. GuardDuty correlates signals into a timeline, mapping observed behaviors to MITRE ATT&CK® tactics and techniques such as account manipulation, resource hijacking, and privilege escalation. This granular level of insight reveals exactly how attackers progress through your Amazon EKS environment. It identifies affected resources like EKS workloads and service accounts. The detailed breakdown of indicators, actors, and endpoints provides you with actionable context to understand attack patterns, determine impact, and prioritize remediation efforts. By consolidating these security insights into a cohesive view, you can quickly assess the severity of Amazon EKS security incidents, reduce investigation time, and implement targeted countermeasures to protect your containerized applications.

The Resources section of the Finding details page shows context about the specific assets affected during an attack sequence. This unified resource list provides you with visibility into the exact scope of the compromise—from the initial access to the targeted Kubernetes components. Because GuardDuty includes detailed attributes such as resource types, identifiers, creation dates, and namespace information, you can rapidly assess which components of your containerized infrastructure require immediate attention. This focused approach eliminates guesswork during incident response, so you can prioritize remediation efforts on the most critical affected resources and minimize the potential blast radius of Amazon EKS targeted attacks.

Now available
Amazon GuardDuty Extended Threat Detection with expanded coverage for Amazon EKS clusters provides comprehensive security monitoring across your Kubernetes environment. You can use this capability to detect sophisticated multistage attacks by correlating events across different data sources, identifying attack sequences that traditional monitoring might miss.

To start using this expanded coverage, enable EKS Protection in your GuardDuty settings and consider adding Runtime Monitoring for enhanced detection capabilities.

For more information about this new capability, refer to the Amazon GuardDuty Documentation.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

As you can see on the navigation menu, AWS Security Hub is organized into five key areas to streamline security management:

Exposure: Provides visibility into all exposure findings, a security vulnerability or misconfiguration that could potentially expose an AWS resource or system to unauthorized access or compromise, generated by Security Hub, helping you identify resources that might be accessible from outside your environment

Threats: Consolidates all threat findings generated by Amazon GuardDuty, showing potential malicious activities and intrusion attempts

Vulnerabilities: Displays all vulnerabilities detected by Amazon Inspector, highlighting software flaws and configuration issues

Posture management: Shows all posture management findings from AWS Security Hub Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM), helping provide compliance with security best practices

Sensitive data: Presents all sensitive data findings identified by Amazon Macie, helping you track and protect your sensitive information

When you navigate to the Exposure page, you’ll see findings grouped by title, with severity levels clearly indicated to help you focus on critical issues first.

To explore specific exposures, you can select any finding to see affected resources. The panel includes key information about the implicated resource, account, Region, and when the issue was detected.

In this panel, you’ll also find an attack path visualization that is particularly useful for understanding complex security relationships. For network exposure paths, you can see all components involved in the path—including virtual private clouds (VPCs), subnets, security groups, network access control lists (ACLs), and load balancers—helping you identify exactly where to implement security controls. The visualization also highlights Identity and Access Management (IAM) relationships, showing how permission configurations might allow privilege escalation or data access. Resources with multiple contributing traits are clearly marked so you can quickly identify which components represent the greatest risk.

The Threats dashboard provides actionable insights into potential malicious activities detected by Amazon GuardDuty, organizing findings by severity so you can quickly identify critical issues like unusual API calls, suspicious network traffic, or potential credential compromises. The dashboard includes GuardDuty Extended Threat Detection findings, with all “Critical” severity threats representing these Extended Threat Detections that require immediate attention.

Similarly, the Vulnerabilities dashboard from Amazon Inspector provides a comprehensive view of software vulnerabilities and network exposure risks. The dashboard highlights vulnerabilities with known exploits, packages requiring urgent updates, and resources with the highest numbers of vulnerabilities.

Another valuable new feature is the Resources view, which provides an inventory of all resources deployed in your organization covered by AWS Security Hub. You can use this view to quickly identify which resources have findings against them and filter by resource type or finding severity. Selecting any resource provides detailed configuration information without needing to pivot to other consoles, streamlining your investigation workflow.
