Happy New Year! I hope the holidays gave you time to recharge and spend time with your loved ones.

Like every year, I took a few weeks off after AWS re:Invent to rest and plan ahead. I used some of that downtime to plan the next cohort for Become a Solutions Architect (BeSA). BeSA is a free mentoring program that I, along with a few other Amazon Web Services (AWS) employees, volunteer to host as a way to help people excel in their cloud and AI careers. We’re kicking off a 6-week cohort on “Agentic AI on AWS” starting February 21, 2026. Visit the BeSA website to learn more.

There is still time to submit your idea for the Global 10,000 AIdeas Competition and compete for $250,000 in cash prizes, AWS credits, and recognition, including potential featured placement at AWS re:Invent 2026 and across AWS channels.

You will gain hands-on experience with next-generation AI development tools, connect with innovators globally, and access technical enablement through biweekly workshops, AWS User Groups, and AWS Builder Center resources.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

The deadline is January 21, 2026, and no code is required yet. If you’re selected as a semifinalist, you’ll build your app then. Your finished app needs to use Kiro for at least part of development, stay within AWS Free Tier limits, and be completely original and not yet published.

If you haven’t yet caught up with all the new releases and announcements from AWS re:Invent 2025, check out our top announcements post or watch the keynotes, innovation talks, and breakout sessions on-demand.

Launches from the last few weeks

I’d like to highlight some launches that got my attention since our last Week in Review on December 15, 2025:

Amazon EC2 M8gn and M8gb instances – New M8gn and M8gb instances are powered by AWS Graviton4 processors to deliver up to 30% better compute performance than AWS Graviton3 processors. M8gn instances feature the latest 6th generation AWS Nitro Cards, and offer up to 600 Gbps network bandwidth, the highest network bandwidth among network-optimized EC2 instances. M8gb offer up to 150 Gbps of Amazon EBS bandwidth to provide higher EBS performance compared to same-sized equivalent Graviton4-based instances.

AWS Direct Connect supports resilience testing with AWS Fault Injection Service – You can now use AWS Fault Injection Service to test how your applications handle Direct Connect Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) failover in a controlled environment. For example, you can validate that traffic routes to redundant virtual interfaces when a primary virtual interface’s BGP session is disrupted and your applications continue to function as expected.

New AWS Security Hub controls in AWS Control Tower – AWS Control Tower now supports 176 additional Security Hub controls in the Control Catalog, covering use cases including security, cost, durability, and operations. With this launch, you can search, discover, enable, and manage these controls directly from AWS Control Tower to govern additional use cases across your multi-account environment.

AWS Transform supports network conversion for hybrid data center migrations – You can now use AWS Transform for VMware to automatically convert networks from hybrid data centers. This removes manual network mapping for environments running both VMware and other workloads. The service analyzes VLANs and IP ranges across all exported source networks and maps them to AWS constructs such as virtual private clouds (VPCs), subnets, and security groups.

NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Nano available on Amazon Bedrock – Amazon Bedrock now supports NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Nano 30B A3B model, NVIDIA’s latest breakthrough in efficient language modeling that delivers high reasoning performance, built-in tool calling support, and extended context processing with 256K token context window.

Amazon EC2 supports Availability Zone ID across its APIs – You can specify the Availability Zone ID (AZ ID) parameter directly in your Amazon EC2 APIs to guarantee consistent placement of resources. AZ IDs are consistent and static identifiers that represent the same physical location across all AWS accounts, helping you optimize resource placement. Prior to this launch, you had to use an AZ name while creating a resource, but these names could map to different physical locations. This mapping made it difficult to ensure resources were always co-located, especially when operating with multiple accounts.

Amazon ECS Managed Instances supports Amazon EC2 Spot Instances – Amazon ECS Managed Instances now supports Amazon EC2 Spot Instances, extending the range of capabilities available with AWS managed infrastructure. You can use spare EC2 capacity at up to 90% discount compared to On-Demand prices for fault-tolerant workloads in Amazon ECS Managed Instances.

See AWS What’s New for more launch news that I haven’t covered here. That’s all for this week. Check back next Monday for another Weekly Roundup!

Our News Blog team is finalizing posts to introduce the most exciting launches from our service teams. If you’re joining us in person in Las Vegas, review the agenda, session catalog, and attendee guides before arriving. Can’t attend in person? Watch our Keynotes and Innovation Talks via livestream.

Kiro is now generally available

Last week, Kiro, the first AI coding tool built around spec-driven development, became generally available. This tool, which we pioneered to bring more clarity and structure to agentic workflows, has already been embraced by over 250,000 developers since its preview release. The GA launch introduces four new capabilities: property-based testing for spec correctness (which measures whether your code matches what you specified); a new way to checkpoint your progress on Kiro; a new Kiro CLI bringing agents to your terminal; and enterprise team plans with centralized management.

Last week’s launches

We’ve announced numerous new feature and service launches as we approach re:Invent week. Key launches include:

Here are some AWS bundled feature launches:

Amazon EKS announces new Provisioned Control Plane, and fully managed MCP servers (preview) and enhanced AI-powered troubleshooting in the console with Amazon ECS.

Amazon ECR introduces managed container image signing, archive storage class for rarely accessed container images, and AWS PrivateLink for FIPS Endpoints.

Amazon Aurora DSQL provides an integrated query editor in the console, statement-level cost estimates in query plans, new Python, Node.js, and JDBC Connectors, up to 256 TiB of storage volume.

Amazon API Gateway supports response streaming for REST APIs, developer portal capabilities, and additional TLS security policies for REST APIs.

Amazon Connect provides conversational analytics for voice, persistent agent connections for faster call handling, and multi skill agent scheduling.

Amazon CloudWatch introduces scheduled queries in Logs Insights and in-console agent management on EC2.

AWS CloudFormation StackSets offers deployment ordering for auto-deployment mode. You can define the sequence in which your stack instances automatically deploy across accounts and Regions.

AWS NAT Gateway supports Regional availability to create a single NAT Gateway that automatically expands and contracts across availability zones (AZs).

Amazon Bedrock supports OpenAI GPT OSS models for Custom Model Import, coding use cases for Guardrails, and 10 additional languages for speech analytics for Data Automation.

Amazon OpenSearch supports Cluster Insights for improved operational visibility, backup and restore and audit logs for data plane APIs in Serverless through the console.

Today, we’re announcing a Controls Dedicated experience in AWS Control Tower. With this feature, you can use Amazon Web Services (AWS) managed controls without the need to set up resources you don’t need, which means you get started faster if you already have an established multi-account environment and want to use AWS Control Tower only for its managed controls. The Controls Dedicated experience gives you seamless access to the comprehensive collection of managed controls in the Control Catalog to incrementally enhance your governance stance.

Until now, customers were required to adopt and configure many recommended best practices which meant implementing a full AWS landing zone at the time of setting up a multi-account environment. This setup included defining the prescribed organizational structure, required services, and more, in AWS Control Tower to start using landing zone. This approach is helpful to ensure a well-architected multi-account environment, however, for customers who already have an established, well-architected multi-account environment and only want to use AWS managed controls, it was more challenging for them to adopt AWS Control Tower. The new Controls Dedicated experience provides a faster and more flexible way of using AWS Control Tower.

How it works

Here’s how I define managed controls using the Controls Dedicated experience in AWS Control Tower in one of my accounts.

I start by choosing Enable AWS Control Tower on the AWS Control Tower landing page.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

I have the option to set up a full environment, or only set up controls using the Controls Dedicated experience. I opt to set up controls by choosing I have an existing environment and want to enable AWS Managed Controls. Next, I set up the rest of the information, such as choosing the Home Region from the dropdown list so that AWS Control Tower resources are provisioned in this Region during enablement. I also select Turn on automatic account enrollment for AWS Control Tower to enroll accounts automatically when I move them into a registered organization unit. The rest of the information is optional; I choose Enable AWS Control Tower to finalize the process, and the landing zone setup begins.

The dashboard gives a summary of the environment such as the organizational units that were created, the shared accounts, the selected IAM configuration, the preventive controls to enforce policies, and detective controls to detect configuration violations.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

I choose View enabled controls for a list of all controls that were installed during this process.

The setup is completed, and now I have all the infrastructure required to use the controls in this account.

Good to know

Usually, an existing AWS Organizations account is required before you can use AWS Control Tower. If you’re using the console to create controls and don’t already have an Organizations account, one will be set up on your behalf.

Now available

Controls Dedicated experience in AWS Control Tower is available today in all AWS Regions where AWS Control Tower is available.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

To learn more, visit our AWS Control Tower page. For more information related to pricing, refer to AWS Control Tower pricing. Send feedback to AWS re:Post for AWS Control Tower or through your usual AWS Support contacts.

Today marks the start of AWS re:Inforce 2025, where security professionals are gathering for three days of technical learning sessions, workshops, and demonstrations. This security-focused conference brings together AWS security specialists who build and maintain the services that organizations rely on for their cloud security needs.

AWS Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Amy Herzog will deliver the conference keynote along with guest speakers who will share new security capabilities and implementation insights. The event offers multiple learning paths with sessions designed for various technical roles and expertise levels. Many of my colleagues from across AWS are leading hands-on workshops, demonstrating new security features, and facilitating community discussions. For those unable to join us in Philadelphia, the keynote and innovation talks will be viewable by livestream during the event, and available to watch on demand after the event. Look out for the key announcements and technical insights from the conference in upcoming posts!

Let’s look at last week’s new announcements.

Last week’s launches
Here are the launches that got my attention.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Extend Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins with MCP tools – Amazon Q Developer now supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) in its integrated development environment (IDE) plugins, helping developers integrate external tools for enhanced contextual development workflows. You can now augment the built-in tools with any MCP server that supports the stdio transport layer. These servers can be managed within the Amazon Q Developer user interface. This makes it easy to add, remove, and modify tool permissions. The integration enables more customized responses by orchestrating tasks across both native and MCP server-based tools. MCP support is available in Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDE plugins, as well as in the Amazon Q Developer command line interface (CLI), with detailed documentation and implementation guides available in the Amazon Q Developer documentation.

AWS WAF now supports automatic application layer DDoS protection – AWS has enhanced its application layer (L7) distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection capabilities with faster automatic detection and mitigation that responds to events within seconds. This AWS Managed Rules group automatically detects and mitigates DDoS attacks of any duration to keep applications running on Amazon CloudFront, Application Load Balancer, and other AWS WAF supported services available to users. The system establishes a baseline within minutes of activation using machine learning (ML) models to detect traffic anomalies, then automatically applies rules to address suspicious requests. Configuration options help you customize responses such as presenting challenges or blocking requests. The feature is available to all AWS WAF and AWS Shield Advanced subscribers in all supported AWS Regions, except Asia Pacific (Thailand), Mexico (Central), and China (Beijing and Ningxia). To learn more about AWS WAF application layer (L7) DDoS protection, visit the AWS WAF documentation or the AWS WAF console.

AWS Control Tower now supports service-linked AWS Config managed AWS Config rules – AWS Control Tower now deploys service-linked AWS Config rules directly in managed accounts, replacing the previous CloudFormation StackSets deployment method. This change improves deployment speed when enabling service-linked AWS Config rules across multiple AWS Control Tower managed accounts and Regions. These service-linked rules are managed entirely by AWS services and can’t be edited or deleted by users. This helps maintain consistency and prevent configuration drift. AWS Control Tower Config rules detect resource noncompliance within accounts and provide alerts through the dashboard. You can deploy these controls using the AWS Control Tower console or AWS Control Tower control APIs.

Powertools for AWS Lambda introduces Bedrock Agents Function utility – The new Amazon Bedrock Agents Function utility in Powertools for AWS Lambda simplifies building serverless applications integrated with Amazon Bedrock Agents. This utility helps developers create AWS Lambda functions that respond to Amazon Bedrock Agents action requests with built-in parameter injection and response formatting, eliminating boilerplate code. The utility seamlessly integrates with other Powertools features like Logger and Metrics, making it easier to build production-ready AI applications. This integration improves the developer experience when building agent-based solutions that use AWS Lambda functions to process actions requested by Amazon Bedrock Agents. The utility is available in Python, TypeScript, and .NET versions of Powertools.

This extension provides additional resiliency and flexibility for moving data between instances, including writers located in different Regions. It helps maintain availability during operations like switching write traffic. Building on PostgreSQL’s logical replication features, pgactive adds capabilities that simplify managing active-active replication scenarios. The open source approach encourages collaboration on developing PostgreSQL’s active-active capabilities while offering features that streamline using PostgreSQL in multi-active instance environments. For more information and implementation guidance, visit the GitHub repository.

Many events are taking place in this period! Last week I was at the AI Week in Italy. This week I’ll be in Zurich for the AWS Community Day – Switzerland. On May 22, you can join us remotely for AWS Cloud Infrastructure Day to learn about cutting-edge advances across compute, AI/ML, storage, networking, serverless technologies, and global infrastructure. Look for events near you for an opportunity to share your knowledge and learn from others.

What got me particularly excited last Friday was the introduction of Strands Agents, an open source SDK that you can use to build and run AI agents in just a few lines of code. It can scale from simple to complex use cases, including local development and production deployment. By default, it uses Amazon Bedrock as model provider, but many others are supported, including Ollama (to run models locally), Anthropic, Llama API, and LiteLLM (to provide a unified interface for other providers such as Mistral).

With Strands, you can use any Python function as a tool for your agent with the
@tool
decorator. Strands provides many example tools for manipulating files, making API requests, and interacting with AWS APIs. You can also choose from thousands of published Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, including this suite of specialized MCP servers that help you get the most out of AWS. Multiple teams at AWS already use Strands for their AI agents in production, including Amazon Q Developer, AWS Glue, and VPC Reachability Analyzer. Read it all in Clare’s post.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Last week’s launches
Here are the other launches that got my attention:

AWS Transform for .NET, the first agentic AI service for modernizing .NET applications at scale – Compared to the preview, we added new capabilities to support projects with private NuGet packages, porting model-view-controller (MVC) Razor views to ASP .NET Core Razor views, and running the ported unit tests.

Accelerate the modernization of Mainframe and VMware workloads with AWS Transform – To automate assessment, planning, and transformation of both mainframe and VMware workloads into cloud-based architectures, streamlining the entire process.

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails now supports cross-Region inference – Amazon Bedrock Guardrails provides configurable safeguards when invoking any model including those hosted in Amazon Bedrock, self-hosted models, and third-party models outside Bedrock using the ApplyGuardrail API, providing a consistent experience to help standardize safety and privacy controls. With this new capability, you get consistent throughput and enhanced resilience during periods of peak demand.

Amazon VPC adds CloudTrail logging for VPC resources created by default – Now, at the time of creation or deletion of the VPC, you can con view events that trigger the creation or deletion of default resources such as security group, network access control list (ACL), and route table. This provides improved visibility of VPC resources and can help you in auditing and governance.

AWS EC2 instances now support ENA queue allocation for your network interfaces – Elastic network adapter (ENA) queues are key components of elastic network interfaces (ENIs) to help efficiently manage network traffic by load balancing sent and received data across available queues. This flexible ENA queue allocation enables maximum vCPU utilization through optimized resource distribution. Network-intensive applications can be allocated more queues, and CPU-intensive applications can operate with fewer queues.

New Amazon EC2 P6-B200 instances powered by NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs to accelerate AI innovations – These instances are especially well-suited for large-scale distributed AI training and inferencing for foundation models (FMs) with reinforcement learning (RL) and distillation, multimodal training and inference, and high performance computing (HPC) applications such as climate modeling, drug discovery, seismic analysis, and insurance risk modeling.

AWS Control Tower introduces account-level reporting for baseline APIs – Now you can use baseline status to view enrollment for your accounts and use drift status to identify when account and organizational unit (OU) baseline configurations are out of sync.

Simplify AWS AppSync Events integration with Powertools for AWS Lambda – Powertools for AWS is a developer toolkit that includes observability, batch processing, AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store integration, idempotency, feature flags, Amazon CloudWatch metrics, structured logging, and more. Powertools for AWS now supports AppSync Events through the new resolver, available in Python, TypeScript, and .NET.

Accelerate CI/CD pipelines with the new AWS CodeBuild Docker Server capability – You can now provision a fully managed Docker server that reduces wait times, increases overall efficiency, and can maintain a persistent cache across builds.

AWS CodePipeline now supports deploying to AWS Lambda with traffic shifting – To publish Lambda function updates using either linear or canary deployment patterns.

Amazon Cognito now supports OIDC prompt parameter – To choose if users should reauthenticate explicitly (maintaining their existing authenticated sessions) or have a silent check on their authentication state.

Additional updates
Here are some additional projects, blog posts, and news items that you might find interesting:

Securing Amazon S3 presigned URLs for serverless applications – Focusing on the security ramifications of using Amazon S3 presigned URLs, explaining mitigation steps that developers can take to improve the security of their systems using S3 presigned URLs, and walking through an AWS Lambda function that adheres to the provided recommendations.

Running GenAI Inference with AWS Graviton and Arcee AI Models – While large language models (LLMs) are capable of a wide variety of tasks, they require compute resources to support hundreds of billions and sometimes trillions of parameters. Small language models (SLMs) in contrast typically have a range of 3 to 15 billion parameters and can provide responses more efficiently. In this post, we share how to optimize SLM inference workloads using AWS Graviton based instances.
