There’s a particular energy to mid-September in New York. Pumpkin spice lattes are flowing, temperatures are dropping, and it’s nearly sweater weather. The city is back at full speed, and so is the AWS launch calendar. This week that energy showed up in a new frontier model on Amazon Bedrock, a desktop app for Amazon Quick, and a reminder that the developers seeing the biggest gains from AI agents aren’t just using better tools — they’re working differently.

Let’s dive in.

Headlines
OpenAI GPT-6 Astra is now generally available on Amazon Bedrock – GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s latest and most capable model to date, and you can now run it on Amazon Bedrock. It brings deeper reasoning and judgment, professional-quality writing and design, and advanced computer and browser use to demanding business workflows. The model supports a context window of up to 1 million input tokens, so you can send it large codebases, long contracts, or extensive document collections and ask it to reconcile competing inputs.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

You can call GPT-6 Astra through supported Amazon Bedrock APIs, or configure ChatGPT Work and Codex to use the model on Amazon Bedrock. Alongside the launch, OpenAI is introducing new enterprise plugins for ChatGPT Work that extend Astra’s browser-use capabilities across common business applications. Established AWS controls help you secure workloads, govern access, and audit model invocation activity, and your inference data isn’t used for model training. Read more

Last week’s launches
Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

Amazon Quick desktop app is now generally available on macOS and Windows – The Amazon Quick desktop app brings Amazon Quick to your computer, where it can work with local files and stay connected to your calendar, email, and business apps in the background. Conversations, context, and agents stay synchronized across desktop and mobile, so work you start on one surface carries over to the other. With this release, Quick agents also keep running after you close your computer, which means you can start a long-running task before you leave the office, add input from the mobile app on the way home, and review the result when you get there. Existing Quick users can download the desktop app, and the mobile app is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play. Read more

AWS Lambda now supports a 90-minute function timeout on Lambda Managed Instances – You can now configure a function timeout of up to 90 minutes for asynchronous and event source mapping (ESM) invocations on Lambda Managed Instances, a 6x increase from the previous 15-minute limit. That opens the door to data processing, media transcoding, financial calculations, AI inference, and batch jobs that need longer continuous execution, without splitting the work across multiple functions. Synchronous invocations keep the existing 15-minute maximum. The longer timeout also applies to steps inside Lambda durable functions, which can still run for up to a year when invoked asynchronously. Read more

Amazon EBS Volume Clones now copies volumes across accounts – Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) Volume Clones can now copy a volume into another AWS account and re-encrypt it with an AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) key in the target account. If you keep production and development in separate accounts, you can share a volume with AWS Resource Access Manager (AWS RAM) and let the target account create a fresh copy in the same Availability Zone, for example, cloning a production database volume into an isolated development account. Cross-account copy works for all volume types, including unencrypted volumes and volumes encrypted with customer managed keys. Read more

Second-generation single-rack AWS Outposts is now generally available – The new single-rack AWS Outposts is a self-contained 42U rack that puts compute, storage, and networking into one compact unit for locations that need low latency, local data processing, or data residency, and don’t have room for a larger footprint. A single rack delivers up to 2,688 vCPU and 100 TB of Amazon EBS storage, and supports the latest x86-powered Amazon EC2 instances, including general purpose (M7i, M8i), compute-optimized (C7i, C8i), memory-optimized (R7i, R8i), and Outposts accelerated networking instances. You get the same APIs, console, automation, governance, and security controls as multi-rack Outposts and AWS Regions. Read more

Amazon OpenSearch Serverless is now available on v0 by Vercel – You can now describe a search or AI application in natural language inside v0 by Vercel and get a full-stack app backed by Amazon OpenSearch Serverless. v0 provisions a collection, indexes your data, and uses the OpenSearch Serverless endpoint for full-text search and vector search for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workloads, without leaving the v0 interface. OpenSearch Serverless scales capacity up and down for you, so you can focus on the application instead of cluster management. You can provision under a new AWS account or link an existing one. Read more

AWS Transform for .NET modernization is now generally available via CLI – You can trigger an AWS-managed .NET modernization in AWS Transform custom with a single CLI command, then run it interactively or script it into an existing pipeline. The CLI sits alongside the existing AWS Transform for .NET experiences in the web application, Visual Studio IDE, Kiro Power, and MCP agents. Use it to upgrade language versions, migrate frameworks, optimize performance, and analyze codebases with transformations you can run as-is or customize. The .NET modernization transformation includes 50,000 free agent minutes per month. Read more

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the What’s New with AWS page.

Other AWS news
Here are some additional posts and resources that you might find interesting:

Clare Liguori on frontier engineering – If you already use an AI coding assistant but don’t feel like you’re shipping much faster, start here. Clare Liguori, Senior Principal Engineer at AWS, published a practitioner’s manifesto on frontier engineering: ten principles, drawn from teams across Amazon, for changing how you build software with AI agents. The argument is direct. Software development has split in two, people who changed how they work with agents, and people who only changed their coding tools. Frontier engineering is not vibe coding. You spend the first weeks writing steering files, refactoring the codebase, and learning to decompose work for agents. Those weeks feel slower. The weeks after feel dramatically faster, because you’re no longer building the software directly — you’re building the agent setup that builds the software.

A free year of Kiro for students around the world – The Kiro Students program is expanding from 11 universities to 121 new schools across 16 countries. Eligible students get one year of Kiro with 1,000 credits per month and full access to paid features such as premium models and Kiro Web, no credit card and no trial timer. You can work in the IDE, the CLI, Kiro Web in a browser, or Kiro Crew. If you’re a student, sign up with your university email.

The state of AI for security: measuring what matters for trust – Security teams are using AI for triage, threat modeling, incident response, and code review, but a tool that flags everything doesn’t save time. In The state of AI for security, Anshumali Shrivastava and Neha Rungta introduce Deception Benchmark, a new evaluation that tests whether a model can tell a real vulnerability from code that looks risky but is actually safe. The benchmark includes 14,822 samples across 16 languages and more than 70 Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) categories. Under standard prompting, precision landed in the mid-50s, about as likely to be inaccurate as accurate, and none of the 12 models tested kept both false positives and false negatives below 10 percent. The post links to the dataset, whitepaper, and submission workflow for verified scoring.

Build full-stack AWS applications in minutes with AI-powered scaffolding – Version 1.0 of the Nx Plugin for AWS is an open source toolkit of deterministic generators for APIs, websites, databases, and AI agents, plus the AWS infrastructure to run them. Each generator writes working, deployable code with security, observability, and type-safety already in place, so an AI assistant can assemble the foundation and spend its effort on your application logic. Bingo Industries used it to take a multi-agent operations chatbot from idea to production in less than 3 weeks. The plugin is open source on GitHub. Create a workspace with
pnpm create @aws/nx-workspace
and point your coding agent at the included MCP server.

The oldest architecture in computing – On All Things Distributed, Werner Vogels starts from a question customers always ask “Will AI take my job?”, and lands on memory. After spending time with Kiro Crew, he traces a line from Jeff Hawkins’ A Thousand Brains to how Crew stores, consolidates, and forgets across markdown files, a vector database, and a key-value index. His conclusion: the brain is the oldest architecture in computing, and the people who think hardest about how it works will build the next tools. Now, go build.

That single post introduced resizable Linux virtual servers in the cloud, billed by the hour, with one instance type (
m1.small
) in one Region (US East). It was minimal yet useful, and it changed how the world thinks about computing infrastructure.

In 2021, Jeff covered the fifteen years of EC2 with the backstory and memorable EC2 launches. Over the last five years, AWS has continued to push the boundaries of what cloud computing can deliver, building custom silicon for general-purpose and AI workloads and expanding EC2 into new form factors and deployment models that our customers in 2006 could not have imagined.

The 20 years in brief
In his 15th anniversary post, Jeff chose important milestones of EC2 that established the foundational building blocks that customers still rely on today. Amazon Elastic Block Store (2008) provided persistent block storage. Elastic Load Balancing, Auto Scaling, and Amazon CloudWatch (2009) made applications scalable and highly available. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (2009) gave customers logically isolated networks. AWS Nitro System (2017) enabled faster innovation and enhanced security. AWS Graviton processors (2018) were designed for cost-sensitive scale-out workloads.

Over 20 years, EC2 grew from one to over 1,200 instance types to meet customer needs across general-purpose, compute-, memory-, and storage-optimized, accelerated computing, and high-performance computing families. These instances expanded from one AWS Region to 39 Regions globally. AWS also extended EC2 beyond the Region boundary with AWS Outposts (2018) running EC2 instances locally, AWS Local Zones (2019) place globally, and AWS Wavelength (2019) inside global 5G telecommunications carrier networks.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

While I hate to play favorites, I want to choose some of my favorite EC2 launches of the past five years:

AWS Inferentia for ML inference at scale (2019): We introduced purpose-built ML inference instances (inf1) with AWS Inferentia chips. Amazon EC2 Inf2 instances became generally available in April 2023 for large-scale generative AI inference workloads. Together with the Inferentia family, AWS Trainium instances now give customers a full stack of AWS-designed silicon optimized for every phase of the AI lifecycle both inference and training.

EC2 Mac instances (2020): The first Mac instances (mac1) were built on Apple Mac mini with Intel Core i7 (Coffee Lake) on the AWS Nitro System. Mac M1 (mac2) instances launched in July 2022 as the first Arm-based macOS instances on EC2. M2 Pro Mac instances followed in 2023, M4 and M4 Pro Mac instances in 2025, M3 Ultra Mac instances and M4 Max Mac instances in 2026, giving Apple developers a complete range of cloud-based build and test environments for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS apps.

AWS Trainium for full-stack AI workloads at scale (2021): In November 2021, we previewed Trn1 instances with AWS Trainium accelerators optimized for high-performance deep learning training. In December 2024, Trn2 instances powered by AWS Trainium2 launched, with Trn2 UltraServers linking 64 Trainium2 accelerators via NeuronLink for training trillion-parameter foundation models. At AWS re:Invent 2025, Trn3 UltraServers powered by AWS Trainium3 deliver the best token economics for next-generation agentic, reasoning, and video generation applications. A single Trn3 UltraServer interconnects up to 144 Trainium3 chips to train and serve the largest frontier models. Now, AWS Trainium3 delivers the leading price-performance for high-performance AI training and inference at scale.

EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML (2023): This new EC2 usage model further democratizes ML democratizes ML by making it easy to access GPU instances to train and deploy ML and generative AI models. You reserve the GPU capacity you need (initially P5 instances) for a future date and only for the duration you require. In November 2024, EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML added supported for provisioning in a matter of minutes and extending up to six months. Now, EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML supports P6-B300, P6-B200, P5e, P5en, P4d, P4de, Trn1, Trn2, and Trn3 instances in addition to P5.

AWS Graviton5 (2025): Building on eight years of Graviton innovation since 2018, we previewed Graviton5 chips in AWS re:Invent 2025 and launched M9g and M9gd instances powered by Graviton5 and built on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System. C9g and C9gd followed in June 2026. Now, Graviton5 features 192 cores, a 5x larger cache, and up to 33% lower inter-core latency, making it well suited for the growing demands of agentic AI workloads such as real-time reasoning, code generation, and multi-step task orchestration that require continuous, high-throughput CPU compute at scale.

AWS Nitro Isolation Engine (2026): Customers wanted to see, not just hear from us, proof of workload isolation in the Nitro Hypervisor. The Nitro Isolation Engine is a purpose-built component inside the Nitro Hypervisor, harnessing formal verification to provide mathematical assurance that customer workloads are isolated from each other and AWS operators, pioneering a new standard for mathematically proven cloud security. This feature is also based on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System which has continued to evolve since our introduction in 2017.

The foundation underneath it all
Despite two decades of innovation, the fundamental value proposition of Amazon EC2 has not changed. Customers use it to get secure, resizable compute capacity in minutes, pay only for what they consume, and scale on demand without long-term commitments. That same flexibility now extends to AI workloads at a scale no one anticipated in 2006.

EC2 remains the foundational compute layer of AWS. Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, AWS Lambda, AWS Fargate, AWS Batch, Amazon EMR, Amazon SageMaker AI, and Amazon Bedrock ultimately run on EC2 capacity. Every architectural pattern customers have built over the past twenty years, from simple web servers to trillion-parameter foundation model training clusters, starts with a decision to launch an instance.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

We made strong foundational decisions in 2006, and we left room for the service to grow. Twenty years later, that strategy of creating services that are minimal-yet-useful, launching quickly, and iterating rapidly in response to your feedback continues to guide how we build. The next twenty years of cloud computing will demand capabilities we have not yet imagined. Amazon EC2 will continue to be the foundation where your workloads run.

At the New York City Summit, I delivered a workshop called Building AI architectures with AWS Serverless, and it was a lot of fun watching builders wire up agents and serverless services to solve real problems in a single afternoon. This week I am heading down to the Washington, DC Summit, which always puts a spotlight on innovation in the public sector. If you are going to be there, come say hello.

A question I hear a lot at these events is how teams can put AI to work without waiting on a long engineering backlog, and this week’s biggest launch speaks directly to that, with Amazon Connect Customer introducing a no-code way for business teams to design AI powered customer experiences themselves. Now, let’s get into this week’s AWS news.

<ins>Headlines

</ins>
Amazon Connect Customer launched the Agentic CX designer (NLX) in preview, a no-code canvas for designing and deploying AI powered self service experiences. Business teams can build and launch voice and digital experiences that bring agentic and deterministic AI together in one governed flow, going from design to testing and simulation to production ready experiences in weeks rather than months. The launch also includes Live Sync in preview, a patented technology that drives a customer’s web or mobile experience in real time as they speak or type. A caller can complete a form or pull up the right product page without ever leaving the conversation. To see how this reshapes who designs customer experience, read the blog post on how the business user is the new architect of customer experience.

<ins>Last week’s launches

</ins>
Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

AWS Lambda MicroVMs – A new serverless compute primitive that gives each user or job VM level isolation with near instant launch and resume speeds, plus the ability to suspend and resume execution for up to 8 hours. Built on Firecracker, it is made for running user or AI generated code in multi-tenant applications without managing virtualization infrastructure or trading off isolation, speed, and state.

Amazon EC2 AMI Watermarks – Lets you embed custom identifiers in your private AMIs that automatically carry forward to every derived AMI across copies, Regions, and account shares. You can combine watermarks with Allowed AMIs and Declarative Policies to restrict launches to approved images, available at no additional cost in all AWS Regions.

AWS Outposts self-service lifecycle management – Adds self service configuration, quoting, ordering, subscription management, renewal, and decommissioning directly from the console, CLI, and API. A new quoting tool generates real time cost estimates in seconds and surfaces account and regional constraints before you submit an order.

Amazon MSK AI Agent Skills – Gives AI coding assistants like Kiro, Claude Code, and Cursor expert, up-to-date guidance for operating Amazon MSK, covering troubleshooting, sizing, configuring, monitoring, and migrating external Kafka clusters to MSK Express. Tasks that once required specialized knowledge become a guided experience developers can complete on their own.

Amazon OpenSearch Service AI-assisted migrations – Migration Assistant now includes an agent guided experience that helps you move self managed Apache Solr, Elasticsearch, or OpenSearch deployments to OpenSearch Serverless or Managed Clusters using tools like Kiro and Claude Code, with new live traffic capture and replay support for Solr.

Amazon GuardDuty AI-powered investigations (preview) – Automatically analyzes findings and accounts to help you separate true threats from benign activity, examining context and related activity from the last 90 days with knowledge graphs and threat intelligence. Each investigation returns a disposition assessment with confidence scoring, MITRE ATT&CK classification, and actionable recommendations in minutes.

<ins>Other AWS news

</ins>
Here are some additional posts and resources that you might find interesting:

Open Governance for MySQL – Oracle announced a community governance model for MySQL that gives organizations outside Oracle a defined role in the project, including four non Oracle seats on a new Steering Committee and a public GitHub presence. AWS holds a seat and shares why it supports the move and how it already contributes fixes upstream for everyone running MySQL.

A new way to keep your AWS Certification current -You can now maintain an eligible AWS Certification for an additional year by completing curated training and hands on labs on AWS Skill Builder instead of retaking a full exam. The option is available today in open beta for several Associate and Professional certifications, with more coming later this year.

The All Builders Welcome Grant insider’s guide for 2026 applicants – A community guide on AWS Builder Center that walks early career builders through applying for the grant, which covers a full conference pass, airfare, and hotel for AWS re:Invent 2026. Applications are open now and close on July 14.

With a steady pace of innovation, AWS has grown to offer over 240 comprehensive cloud services and continues to launch thousands of new features annually for millions of customers. During this time, over 4,700 posts have been published on this blog—more than double the number since Jeff Barr wrote the 10th anniversary post.

AWS changed my life

Reflecting on what I was doing 20 years ago, I met Jeff in Seoul on March 13, 2006, when he came as the keynote speaker for the Korea NGWeb conference. At that time, Amazon was one of the first pioneers to initiate an API economy, introducing ecommerce API services. After the keynote speech, he returned home that evening, and I believe he wrote the Amazon S3 launch blog post on the flight back to the United States.

That short meeting with him brought significant changes to my life. He became my role model as a blogger, and I began building API-based services in my company and opening them to third-party developers. When I was a PhD student while taking a break from work, I realized that for individual researchers like me, AWS Cloud services are powerful tools for conducting large-scale research projects. After returning to work, my company became one of the first AWS customers in Korea in 2014. Countless developers—myself included—have embraced cloud computing and actively used its capabilities to accomplish what was previously impossible.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Over the past decade, the technology landscape has transformed dramatically. Deep learning emerged as a breakthrough in AI, evolving through generative AI based on large language models (LLMs) to today’s agentic AI technology. Jeff wrote, “When looking into the future, you need to be able to distinguish between flashy distractions and genuine trends, while remaining flexible enough to pivot if yesterday’s niche becomes today’s mainstream technology.” This principle guides how AWS approaches innovation—we start by listening to what customers truly need. The real trend isn’t pursuing every emerging technology, but rather reimagining solutions that address customers’ most critical challenges.

20 years of AWS

For the first 10 years, Jeff selected his favorite AWS launches and blog posts. Amazon S3, Amazon EC2 (2006), Amazon Relational Database Service, Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (2009), Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Redshift (2012), Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon Kinesis (2013), AWS Lambda (2014), and AWS IoT (2015).

While I also hate to play favorites, I want to choose some of my favorite AWS blog posts of the past decade.

As a European citizen, I understand first-hand the importance of digital sovereignty, especially for our public sector organisations and highly regulated industries. Today, I’m delighted to share that the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is now generally available to all customers. We first announced our plans to build this new independent cloud infrastructure in 2023, and today it’s ready to meet the most stringent sovereignty requirements of European customers with a comprehensive set of AWS services.

Meeting European sovereignty requirements

Organizations across Europe face increasingly complex regulatory requirements around data residency, operational control, and governance independence. Too often today, European organisations with the highest sovereignty requirements are stuck in legacy on-premises environments or offerings with reduced services and functionality. In response to this critical need, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is the only fully featured and independently operated sovereign cloud backed by strong technical controls, sovereign assurances, and legal protections. Public sector entities and businesses in highly regulated industries need cloud infrastructure that provides enhanced sovereignty controls that maintain the innovation, security, and reliability they expect from modern cloud services. These organisations require assurance that their data and operations remain under European jurisdiction, with clear governance structures and operational autonomy within the European Union (EU).

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

A new independent cloud infrastructure for Europe

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud represents a physically and logically separate cloud infrastructure, with all components located entirely within the EU. The first AWS Region in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is located in the state of Brandenburg, Germany, and is generally available today. This Region operates independently from existing AWS Regions. The infrastructure features multiple Availability Zones with redundant power and networking, designed to operate continuously even if connectivity with the rest of the world is interrupted.

We plan to extend the AWS European Sovereign Cloud footprint from Germany across the EU to support stringent isolation, in-country data residency, and low latency requirements. This will start with new sovereign Local Zones located in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal. In addition, you will be able to extend the AWS European Sovereign Cloud infrastructure with AWS Dedicated Local Zones, AWS AI Factories, or AWS Outposts in locations you select, including your own on-premises data centres.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud and its Local Zones provide enhanced sovereign controls through its unique operational model. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be operated exclusively by EU residents located in the EU. This covers activities such as day-to-day operations, technical support, and customer service. We’re gradually transitioning the AWS European Sovereign Cloud to be operated exclusively by EU citizens located in the EU. During this transition period, we will continue to work with a blended team of EU residents and EU citizens located in the EU.

The infrastructure is managed through dedicated European legal entities established under German law. In October 2025, AWS appointed Stéphane Israël, an EU citizen residing in the EU, as managing director. Stéphane will be responsible for the management and operations of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, including infrastructure, technology, and services, as well as leading AWS broader digital sovereignty efforts. In January 2026, AWS also appointed Stefan Hoechbauer (Vice President, Germany and Central Europe, AWS) as a managing director of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. He will work alongside Stéphane Israel to lead the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

Enhanced data residency and control

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud provides comprehensive data residency assurances so you can meet the most stringent data residency requirements. As with our existing AWS Regions around the world, all your content remains within the Region you select unless you choose otherwise. Beyond content, customer-created metadata including roles, permissions, resource labels, and configurations also stays within the EU. The infrastructure features its own dedicated AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and billing system, all operating independently within European borders.

Technical controls built into the infrastructure prevent access to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud from outside the EU. The infrastructure includes a dedicated European trust service provider for certificate authority operations and uses dedicated Amazon Route 53 name servers. These servers will only use European Top-Level Domains (TLDs) for their own names. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud has no critical dependencies on non-EU personnel or infrastructure.

Security and compliance framework

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud maintains the same core security capabilities you expect from AWS, including encryption, key management, access governance, and the AWS Nitro System for compute isolation. This means your EC2 instances benefit from cryptographically verified platform integrity and hardware-enforced boundaries that prevent unauthorized access to your data without compromising on performance, giving you both the sovereignty controls and the computational power your workloads require. The infrastructure undergoes independent third-party audits, with compliance programs including ISO/IEC 27001:2013, SOC 1/2/3 reports, and Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) C5 attestation.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud: Sovereign Reference Framework defines the specific sovereignty controls across governance independence, operational control, data residency, and technical isolation. This framework is available in AWS Artifact and provides end-to-end visibility through SOC 2 attestation.

Comprehensive service availability

You can access a broad range of AWS services in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud from launch, including Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock for artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) workloads. For compute, you can use Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and AWS Lambda. Container orchestration is available through Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) and Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS). Database services include Amazon Aurora, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS). Storage options include Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), with networking through Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) and security services including AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) and AWS Private Certificate Authority. For an up-to-date list of services, refer to the AWS Capabilities matrix recently published on the AWS Builder Center.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is supported by AWS Partners who are committed to helping you meet your sovereignty requirements. Partners including Adobe, Cisco, Cloudera, Dedalus, Esri, Genesys, GitLab, Mendix, Pega, SAP, SnowFlake, Trend Micro, and Wiz are making their solutions available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, providing you with the tools and services you need across security, data analytics, application development, and industry-specific workloads. This broad partner support helps you build sovereign solutions that combine AWS services with trusted partner technologies.

Significant investment in European infrastructure

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is backed by a €7.8 billion investment in infrastructure, jobs creation, and skills development. This investment is expected to contribute €17.2 billion to the European economy through 2040 and support roughly 2,800 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses.

Some technical details

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is available to all customers, regardless of where they are located. You can access the infrastructure using the partition name
aws-eusc
and the Region name
eusc-de-east-1
. A partition is a group of AWS Regions. Each AWS account is scoped to one partition.

The infrastructure supports all standard AWS access methods including the AWS Management Console, AWS SDKs, and the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI), making it straightforward to integrate into your existing workflows and automation. After having created a new root account for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud partition, you start by creating new IAM identities and roles specific to this infrastructure, giving you complete control over access management within the European sovereign environment.

Getting started

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud provides European organisations with enhanced sovereignty controls whilst maintaining access to AWS innovation and capabilities. You can contract for services through Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL, with pricing in EUR and billing in any of the eight currencies we support today. The infrastructure uses familiar AWS architecture, service portfolio, and APIs, making it straightforward to build and migrate applications.

Inoltre, sarà possibile estendere l’infrastruttura AWS European Sovereign Cloud con Zone locali AWS dedicate, AWS AI Factories o AWS Outposts in posizioni selezionate, inclusi i data center on-premises.

I controlli tecnici integrati nell’infrastruttura impediscono l’accesso all’AWS European Sovereign Cloud dall’esterno dell’UE.

Investimenti significativi nelle infrastrutture europee

Alcuni dettagli tecnici

Last week, Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5—the world’s best coding model according to SWE-Bench – became available in Amazon Q command line interface (CLI) and Kiro. I’m excited about this for two reasons:

First, a few weeks ago I spent 4 intensive days with a global customer delivering an AI-assisted development workshop, where I experienced firsthand how Amazon Q CLI boosts developer productivity. During the workshop, the customer was able to add a new feature in their application within a day using Amazon Q CLI, which would have traditionally taken them at least a couple of weeks. With Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5 in Amazon Q CLI, I know developer productivity will be enhanced further.

Second, I’ve started preparing for my code talk at AWS re:Invent 2025, where my co-speaker and I will show live coding to modernize a legacy codebase using Kiro. I can’t wait to use Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5 in Kiro to create a live demo. If you want to see this demo and over a thousand other sessions on cloud and AI, join us at AWS re:Invent 2025 in Las Vegas from December 1–5.

Last week’s launches
Here are some launches that got my attention:

Availability of Claude Sonnet 4.5 in Amazon Bedrock – Anthropic’s most intelligent model, best for coding and complex agents, is now available in Amazon Bedrock. By using Claude Sonnet 4.5 in Amazon Bedrock, developers gain access to a fully managed service that not only provides a unified API for foundation models (FMs) but keeps their data under complete control with enterprise-grade tools for security, and optimization.

AWS Outposts supports third-party storage integration with Dell and HPE – AWS Outposts third-party storage integration now includes Dell PowerStore and HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 systems, joining the list of existing integrations with NetApp on-premises enterprise storage arrays and Pure Storage FlashArray. This integration serves three key purposes. First, it helps you maintain your existing storage infrastructure while migrating VMware workloads to AWS. Second, it helps you meet strict data residency requirements by keeping your data on premises while using AWS services. Third, it means you can use AWS Outposts with third-party storage arrays through AWS tooling.

Amazon ECS Managed Instances now available – Amazon ECS Managed Instances for containerized applications is a new fully managed compute option for Amazon ECS designed to eliminate infrastructure management overhead while giving you access to the full capabilities of Amazon EC2. ECS Managed Instances helps you quickly launch and scale your workloads while enhancing performance and reducing your total cost of ownership.

Application map is now generally available for Amazon CloudWatch – Amazon CloudWatch now helps you monitor large-scale distributed applications by automatically discovering and organizing services into groups based on configurations and their relationships. With this new application performance monitoring (APM) capability, you can quickly visualize which applications and dependencies to focus on while troubleshooting your distributed applications.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Model Context Protocol (MCP) server now available – With built-in support for runtime, gateway integration, identity management, and agent memory, the AgentCore MCP server is purpose-built to speed up creation of components compatible with Bedrock AgentCore. You can use the AgentCore MCP server for rapid prototyping, production AI solutions, or to scale your agent infrastructure.

Since announcing second-generation AWS Outposts racks in April with breakthrough performance and scalability, we’ve continued to innovate on behalf of our customers at the edge of the cloud. Today, we’re expanding AWS Outposts third-party storage integration program to include Dell PowerStore and HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 systems, joining our list of existing integrations with NetApp on-premises enterprise storage arrays and Pure Storage FlashArray. This program makes it easy for customers to use AWS Outposts with third-party storage arrays through AWS native tooling. The solution integration is particularly important for organizations migrating VMware workloads to AWS who need to maintain their existing storage infrastructure during the transition, and for those who must meet strict data residency requirements by keeping their data on-premises while using AWS services.

This announcement builds upon two significant storage integration milestones we achieved in the past year. In December 2024, we introduced the ability to attach block data volumes from third-party storage arrays to Amazon EC2 instances on Outposts directly through the AWS Management Console. Then in July 2025, we enabled booting Amazon EC2 instances directly from these external storage arrays. Now, with the addition of Dell and HPE, customers have even more choice in how they integrate their on-premises storage investments with AWS Outposts.

Enhanced storage integration capabilities

Our third-party storage integration supports both data and boot volumes, offering two boot methods: iSCSI SANboot and Localboot. The iSCSI SANboot option enables both read-only and read-write boot volumes, while Localboot supports read-only boot volumes using either iSCSI or NVMe-over-TCP protocols. With this comprehensive approach, customers can centrally manage their storage resources while maintaining the consistent hybrid experience that Outposts provides.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Through the Amazon EC2 Launch Instance Wizard in the AWS Management Console, customers can configure their instances to use external storage from any of our supported partners. For boot volumes, we provide AWS-verified AMIs for Windows Server 2022 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, with automation scripts available through AWS Samples to simplify the setup process.

Support for various Outposts configurations

All third-party storage integration features are supported on Outposts 2U servers and both generations of Outposts racks. Support for second-generation Outposts racks means customers can combine the enhanced performance of our latest EC2 instances on Outposts—including twice the vCPU, memory, and network bandwidth—with their preferred storage solutions. The integration works seamlessly with both our new simplified network scaling capabilities and specialized Amazon EC2 instances designed for ultra-low latency and high throughput workloads.

Things to know

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Customers can begin using these capabilities today with their existing Outposts deployments or when ordering new Outposts through the AWS Management Console. If you are using third-party storage integration with Outposts servers, you can have either your onsite personnel or a third-party IT provider install the servers for you. After the Outposts servers are connected to your network, AWS will remotely provision compute and storage resources so you can start launching applications. For Outposts rack deployments, the process involves a setup where AWS technicians verify site conditions and network connectivity before the rack installation and activation. Storage partners assist with the implementation of the third-party storage components.

Third-party storage integration for Outposts with all compatible storage vendors is available at no additional charge in all AWS Regions where Outposts is supported. See the FAQs for Outposts servers and Outposts racks for the latest list of supported Regions.

This expansion of our Outposts third-party storage integration program demonstrates our continued commitment to providing flexible, enterprise-grade hybrid cloud solutions, meeting customers where they are in their cloud migration journey. To learn more about this capability and our supported storage vendors, visit the AWS Outposts partner page and our technical documentation for Outposts servers, second-generation Outposts racks, and first-generation Outposts racks. To learn more about partner solutions, check out Dell PowerStore integration with AWS Outposts and HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 integration with AWS Outposts.

Amazon Prime Day 2025 was the biggest Amazon Prime Day shopping event ever, setting records for both sales volume and total items sold during the 4-day event. Prime members saved billions while shopping Amazon’s millions of deals during the event.

This year marked a significant transformation in the Prime Day experience through advancements in the generative AI offerings from Amazon and AWS. Customers used Alexa+—the Amazon next-generation personal assistant now available in early access to millions of customers—along with the AI-powered shopping assistant, Rufus, and AI Shopping Guides. These features, built on more than 15 years of cloud innovation and machine learning expertise from AWS, combined with deep retail and consumer experience from Amazon, helped customers quickly discover deals and get product information, complementing the fast, free delivery that Prime members enjoy year-round.

As part of our annual tradition to tell you about how AWS powered Prime Day for record-breaking sales, I want to share the services and chart-topping metrics from AWS that made your amazing shopping experience possible.

Prime Day 2025 – all the numbers
During the weeks leading up to big shopping events like Prime Day, Amazon fulfillment centers and delivery stations work to get ready and ensure operations run efficiently and safely.
Today, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to launch a new AWS Region in Chile by the end of 2026. The AWS South America (Chile) Region will consist of three Availability Zones at launch, bringing AWS infrastructure and services closer to customers in Chile. This new Region joins the AWS South America (São Paulo) and AWS Mexico (Central) Regions as our third AWS Region in Latin America. Each Availability Zone is separated by a meaningful distance to support applications that need low latency while significantly reducing the risk of a single event impacting availability.

Today we’re announcing the general availability of second-generation AWS Outposts racks, which marks the latest innovation from AWS for edge computing. This new generation includes support for the latest x86-powered Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, new simplified network scaling and configuration, and accelerated networking instances designed specifically for ultra-low latency and high-throughput workloads. These enhancements deliver greater performance for a broad range of on-premises workloads, such as core trading systems of financial services and telecom 5G Core workloads.

Customers like athenahealth, FanDuel, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Mercado Libre, Liberty Latin America, Riot Games, Vector Limited, and Wiwynn are already using Outposts racks for workloads that need to stay on-premises. The second-generation Outposts rack can provide low latency, local data processing, or data residency needs, such as game servers for multi-player online games, customer transaction data, medical records, industrial and manufacturing control systems, telecom Business Support Systems (BSS), and edge inference of a variety of machine learning (ML) models. Customers can now take advantage of the latest generation of processors and more advanced configurations of Outposts racks to support faster processing, higher memory capacity, and increased network bandwidth.

Latest generation EC2 instances

We’re excited to announce local support for the latest generation (7th generation) of x86-powered Amazon EC2 instances on AWS Outposts racks, starting with C7i compute-optimized instances, M7i general-purpose instances, and R7i memory-optimized instances. These new instances deliver twice the vCPU, memory, and network bandwidth while providing up to 40% better performance compared to C5, M5, and R5 instances on previous generation Outposts racks. They are powered by 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and are ideal for a broad range of on-premises workloads requiring enhanced performance such as larger databases, more memory-intensive applications, advanced real-time big data analytics, high-performance video encoding and streaming, and CPU-based edge inference with more sophisticated ML models. Support for more latest generation EC2 instances, including GPU-enabled instances, is coming soon.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Simplified network scaling and configuration

We’ve completely reimagined networking in our latest Outposts generation, making it simpler and more scalable than ever. At the heart of this upgrade is our new Outposts network rack, which acts as a central hub for all your compute and storage traffic.

This new design brings three major benefits to the table. First, you can now scale your compute resources independently from your networking infrastructure, giving you more flexibility and cost efficiency as your workloads grow. Second, we’ve built in network resilience from the ground up, with the network rack automatically handling device failures to keep your systems running smoothly. Third, connecting to your on-premises environment and AWS Regions is now a breeze – you can configure everything from IP addresses to VLAN and BGP settings through straightforward APIs or our updated console interface.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Specialized Amazon EC2 instances with accelerated networking

We’re introducing a new category of specialized Amazon EC2 instances on Outposts racks with accelerated networking. These instances are purpose built for the most latency-sensitive, compute-intensive, and throughput-intensive mission-critical workloads on-premises. To deliver the best possible performance, in addition to the Outpost logical network, these instances feature a secondary physical network with network accelerator cards connected to top-of-rack (TOR) switches.

First in this category are bmn-sf2e instances, designed for ultra-low latency with deterministic performance. The new instances run on Intel’s latest Sapphire Rapids processors (4th Gen Xeon Scalable), delivering 3.9 GHz sustained performance across all cores with generous memory allocation – 8GB of RAM for every CPU core. We’ve equipped bmn-sf2e instances with AMD Solarflare X2522 network cards that connect directly to top-of-rack switches.

For financial services customers, especially capital market firms, these instances offer deterministic networking through native Layer 2 (L2) multicast, precision time protocol (PTP), and equal cable lengths. This enables customers to meet regulatory requirements around fair trading and equal access while easily connecting to their existing trading infrastructure.

Bottom line, the new generation of Outposts racks deliver enhanced performance, scalability, and resiliency for a broad range of on-premises workloads, even for mission-critical workloads with the most stringent latency and throughput requirements. You can make your selection and initiate your order from the AWS Management Console. The new instances maintain consistency with regional deployments by supporting the same APIs, AWS Management Console, automation, governance policies, and security controls in the cloud and on-premises, improving developer productivity and IT efficiency.

Things to know

At launch, second-generation Outposts racks can be shipped to US and Canada and be parented back to 6 AWS Regions including US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (Oregon), EU West (London and France) and Asia Pacific (Singapore). Support for more countries and territories and AWS Regions is coming soon. At launch, second-generation Outposts racks locally support a subset of AWS services found in previous generation Outposts racks. Support for more EC2 instance types and more AWS services is coming soon.
