That single post introduced resizable Linux virtual servers in the cloud, billed by the hour, with one instance type (
m1.small
) in one Region (US East). It was minimal yet useful, and it changed how the world thinks about computing infrastructure.

In 2021, Jeff covered the fifteen years of EC2 with the backstory and memorable EC2 launches. Over the last five years, AWS has continued to push the boundaries of what cloud computing can deliver, building custom silicon for general-purpose and AI workloads and expanding EC2 into new form factors and deployment models that our customers in 2006 could not have imagined.

The 20 years in brief
In his 15th anniversary post, Jeff chose important milestones of EC2 that established the foundational building blocks that customers still rely on today. Amazon Elastic Block Store (2008) provided persistent block storage. Elastic Load Balancing, Auto Scaling, and Amazon CloudWatch (2009) made applications scalable and highly available. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (2009) gave customers logically isolated networks. AWS Nitro System (2017) enabled faster innovation and enhanced security. AWS Graviton processors (2018) were designed for cost-sensitive scale-out workloads.

Over 20 years, EC2 grew from one to over 1,200 instance types to meet customer needs across general-purpose, compute-, memory-, and storage-optimized, accelerated computing, and high-performance computing families. These instances expanded from one AWS Region to 39 Regions globally. AWS also extended EC2 beyond the Region boundary with AWS Outposts (2018) running EC2 instances locally, AWS Local Zones (2019) place globally, and AWS Wavelength (2019) inside global 5G telecommunications carrier networks.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

While I hate to play favorites, I want to choose some of my favorite EC2 launches of the past five years:

AWS Inferentia for ML inference at scale (2019): We introduced purpose-built ML inference instances (inf1) with AWS Inferentia chips. Amazon EC2 Inf2 instances became generally available in April 2023 for large-scale generative AI inference workloads. Together with the Inferentia family, AWS Trainium instances now give customers a full stack of AWS-designed silicon optimized for every phase of the AI lifecycle both inference and training.

EC2 Mac instances (2020): The first Mac instances (mac1) were built on Apple Mac mini with Intel Core i7 (Coffee Lake) on the AWS Nitro System. Mac M1 (mac2) instances launched in July 2022 as the first Arm-based macOS instances on EC2. M2 Pro Mac instances followed in 2023, M4 and M4 Pro Mac instances in 2025, M3 Ultra Mac instances and M4 Max Mac instances in 2026, giving Apple developers a complete range of cloud-based build and test environments for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS apps.

AWS Trainium for full-stack AI workloads at scale (2021): In November 2021, we previewed Trn1 instances with AWS Trainium accelerators optimized for high-performance deep learning training. In December 2024, Trn2 instances powered by AWS Trainium2 launched, with Trn2 UltraServers linking 64 Trainium2 accelerators via NeuronLink for training trillion-parameter foundation models. At AWS re:Invent 2025, Trn3 UltraServers powered by AWS Trainium3 deliver the best token economics for next-generation agentic, reasoning, and video generation applications. A single Trn3 UltraServer interconnects up to 144 Trainium3 chips to train and serve the largest frontier models. Now, AWS Trainium3 delivers the leading price-performance for high-performance AI training and inference at scale.

EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML (2023): This new EC2 usage model further democratizes ML democratizes ML by making it easy to access GPU instances to train and deploy ML and generative AI models. You reserve the GPU capacity you need (initially P5 instances) for a future date and only for the duration you require. In November 2024, EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML added supported for provisioning in a matter of minutes and extending up to six months. Now, EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML supports P6-B300, P6-B200, P5e, P5en, P4d, P4de, Trn1, Trn2, and Trn3 instances in addition to P5.

AWS Graviton5 (2025): Building on eight years of Graviton innovation since 2018, we previewed Graviton5 chips in AWS re:Invent 2025 and launched M9g and M9gd instances powered by Graviton5 and built on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System. C9g and C9gd followed in June 2026. Now, Graviton5 features 192 cores, a 5x larger cache, and up to 33% lower inter-core latency, making it well suited for the growing demands of agentic AI workloads such as real-time reasoning, code generation, and multi-step task orchestration that require continuous, high-throughput CPU compute at scale.

AWS Nitro Isolation Engine (2026): Customers wanted to see, not just hear from us, proof of workload isolation in the Nitro Hypervisor. The Nitro Isolation Engine is a purpose-built component inside the Nitro Hypervisor, harnessing formal verification to provide mathematical assurance that customer workloads are isolated from each other and AWS operators, pioneering a new standard for mathematically proven cloud security. This feature is also based on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System which has continued to evolve since our introduction in 2017.

The foundation underneath it all
Despite two decades of innovation, the fundamental value proposition of Amazon EC2 has not changed. Customers use it to get secure, resizable compute capacity in minutes, pay only for what they consume, and scale on demand without long-term commitments. That same flexibility now extends to AI workloads at a scale no one anticipated in 2006.

EC2 remains the foundational compute layer of AWS. Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, AWS Lambda, AWS Fargate, AWS Batch, Amazon EMR, Amazon SageMaker AI, and Amazon Bedrock ultimately run on EC2 capacity. Every architectural pattern customers have built over the past twenty years, from simple web servers to trillion-parameter foundation model training clusters, starts with a decision to launch an instance.

Twenty years later, that strategy of creating services that are minimal-yet-useful, launching quickly, and iterating rapidly in response to your feedback continues to guide how we build. The next twenty years of cloud computing will demand capabilities we have not yet imagined. Amazon EC2 will continue to be the foundation where your workloads run.

Today, we’re announcing exportable public SSL/TLS certificates from AWS Certificate Manager (ACM). Prior to this launch, you can issue your public certificates or import certificates issued by third-party certificate authorities (CAs) at no additional cost, and deploy them with integrated AWS services such as Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon CloudFront distribution, and Amazon API Gateway.

Now you can export public certificates from ACM, get access to the private keys, and use them on any workloads running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, containers, or on-premises hosts. The exportable public certificate are valid for 395 days. There is a charge at time of issuance, and again at time of renewal. Public certificates exported from ACM are issued by Amazon Trust Services and are widely trusted by commonly used platforms such as Apple and Microsoft and popular web browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

ACM exportable public certificates in action
To export a public certificate, you first request a new exportable public certificate. You cannot export previously created public certificates.

To get started, choose Request certificate in the ACM console and choose Enable export in the Allow export section. If you select Disable export, the private key for this certificate will be disallowed for exporting from ACM and this cannot be changed after certificate issuance.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

You can also use the
request-certificate
command to request a public exportable certificate with
Export=ENABLED
option on the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI).

aws acm request-certificate
--domain-name mydomain.com
--key-algorithm EC_Prime256v1
--validation-method DNS
--idempotency-token <token>
--options
CertificateTransparencyLoggingPreference=DISABLED
Export=ENABLED

After you request the public certificate, you must validate your domain name to prove that you own or control the domain for which you are requesting the certificate. The certificate is typically issued within seconds after successful domain validation.

When the certificate enters status Issued, you can export your issued public certificate by choosing Export.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Enter a passphrase for encrypting the private key. You will need the passphrase later to decrypt the private key. To get the public key, Choose Generate PEM Encoding.

You can copy the PEM encoded certificate, certificate chain, and private key or download each to a separate file.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

You can use the
export-certificate
command to export a public certificate and private key. For added security, use a file editor to store your passphrase and output keys to a file to prevent being stored in the command history.

aws acm export-certificate
     --certificate-arn arn:aws:acm:us-east-1:<accountID>:certificate/<certificateID>
     --passphrase fileb://path-to-passphrase-file
     | jq -r '"(.Certificate)(.CertificateChain)(.PrivateKey)"'
     > /tmp/export.txt

You can now use the exported public certificates for any workload that requires SSL/TLS communication such as Amazon EC2 instances. To learn more, visit Configure SSL/TLS on Amazon Linux in your EC2 instances.

Things to know
Here are a couple of things to know about exportable public certificates:

Key security – An administrator of your organization can set AWS IAM policies to authorize roles and users who can request exportable public certificates. ACM users who have current rights to issue a certificate will automatically get rights to issue an exportable certificate. ACM admins can also manage the certificates and take actions such as revoking or deleting the certificates. You should protect exported private keys using secure storage and access controls.

Revocation – You may need to revoke exportable public certificates to comply with your organization’s policies or mitigate key compromise. You can only revoke the certificates that were previously exported. The certificate revocation process is global and permanent. Once revoked, you can’t retrieve revoked certificates to reuse. To learn more, visit Revoke a public certificate in the AWS documentation.

Renewal – You can configure automatic renewal events for exportable public certificates by Amazon EventBridge to monitor certificate renewals and create automation to handle certificate deployment when renewals occur. To learn more, visit Using Amazon EventBridge in the AWS documentation. You can also renew these certificates on-demand. When you renew the certificates, you’re charged for a new certificate issuance. To learn more, visit Force certificate renewal in the AWS documentation.

Now available
You can now issue exportable public certificates from ACM and export the certificate with the private keys to use other compute workloads as well as ELB, Amazon CloudFront, and Amazon API Gateway.

You are subject to additional charges for an exportable public certificate when you create it with ACM. It costs $15 per fully qualified domain name and $149 per wildcard domain name. You only pay once during the lifetime of the certificate and will be charged again only when the certificate renews. To learn more, visit the AWS Certificate Manager Service Pricing page.

Give ACM exportable public certificates a try in the ACM console. To learn more, visit the ACM Documentation page and send feedback to AWS re:Post for ACM or through your usual AWS Support contacts.

This weekend offered one such treasure—while cycling along a quiet canal, golden rays broke through the typically gray Dutch sky, creating a perfect moment of serenity. These glimpses of brightness feel particularly special during January, when daylight can be scarce in our corner of Europe. As we move deeper into 2025, the third week of the new year brings both reflection and forward momentum. While global conversations swirl around technological advancements, it’s these small, personal moments that remind us to pause and appreciate the simple pleasures among our rapidly evolving world.

Let’s look at the last week’s new announcements.

Last week’s launches
Here are the launches that got my attention.

AWS Mexico (Central) Region – In February 2024, we announced plans to expand infrastructure in Mexico, and we’ve now launched the AWS Mexico (Central) Region with three Availability Zones and API code mx-central-1. This marks the first AWS infrastructure Region in Mexico and adds to our growing presence in Latin America. The new Region provides you with local workload management, data storage capabilities, enhanced performance with lower latency, and robust security standards. It features advanced cloud technologies, including cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities with purpose-built processors, comprehensive security capabilities with support for 143 security standards and compliance certifications. With this launch, AWS now spans 114 Availability Zones within 36 geographic Regions.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

AWS Management Console now supports simultaneous sign-in for multiple AWS accounts – Using multi-session capability in the AWS Management Console, you can now sign-in to multiple AWS accounts and manage your resources in a single browser. You can sign in to up to 5 sessions and this can be any combination of root, AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), or federated roles in different accounts or in the same account. You can scale your applications using multiple accounts following AWS best-practice guidelines. You can use accounts for different environments, such as development, testing, and production, and compare resource configurations and status across multiple accounts for troubleshooting application issues and other application related jobs.

Introducing new larger sizes on Amazon EC2 Flex instances – We’re announcing the general availability of two new larger sizes (12xlarge and 16xlarge) on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Flex (C7i-flex and M7i-flex) instances. The new sizes expand the EC2 Flex portfolio, providing additional compute options to scale up existing workloads or run larger-sized applications that need additional memory. These instances are powered by custom 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, which are available only on AWS, and offer up to 15% better performance over comparable x86-based Intel processors used by other cloud providers. Flex instances are the easiest way to get price performance benefits and lower prices for a majority of compute-intensive and general-purpose workloads. They deliver up to 19% better price performance than comparable previous generation instances and are a great first choice for applications that don’t fully utilize the compute resources. Flex instances are ideal for web and application servers, batch processing, enterprise applications, databases, and more. For compute-intensive and general-purpose workloads that need even larger instance sizes (up to 192 vCPUs and 768 GiB memory) or continuous high CPU usage, you can use Amazon EC2 C7i and M7i instances.

Announcing AWS User Notifications general availability on AWS CloudFormation – You can use AWS User Notifications to configure notifications to be sent using the AWS Management Console Notifications Center, email, AWS Chatbot, or mobile push notifications to the AWS Console Mobile App to keep you informed about important events such as Amazon CloudWatch alarms. With this capability, you can define notification configurations as part of your infrastructure-as-code (IaC) practices and specify notification configurations for specific resource types within your AWS CloudFormation templates. For example, you can set up notifications to trigger when an Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling group scales out, an Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) load balancer is provisioned, or an Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) database is modified. You have granular control over which events will trigger notifications and who should receive them.

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the What’s New at AWS page.

Amazon EC2 M8g instances are now available in AWS Europe (Stockholm) – These instances offer larger instance sizes with up to three times more vCPUs and memory compared to Graviton3 based Amazon M7g instances. AWS Graviton4 processors are up to 40% faster for databases, 30% faster for web applications, and 45% faster for large Java applications than AWS Graviton3 processors.

AWS announces new AWS Direct Connect location and expansion in Querétaro, Mexico – The Direct Connect service helps you establish a private, physical network connection between AWS and your data center, office, or colocation environment. These private connections can provide a more consistent network experience than those made over the public internet.

Amazon EC2 C7i-flex instances are now available in AWS GovCloud (US-West) Region – These instances expand the EC2 Flex instances portfolio to provide the easiest way for you to get price performance benefits for a majority of compute intensive workloads.

AWS Backup now supports organization-wide reports in AWS GovCloud (US) Regions – You can use AWS Backup Audit Manager to generate aggregated cross-account and cross-Region reports on your data protection policies and retrieve operational data about your backup and recovery activities.

Amazon OpenSearch Serverless is now available in Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Region – OpenSearch Serverless is a serverless deployment option for Amazon OpenSearch Service that makes it simple to run search and analytics workloads without the complexities of infrastructure management.

AWS Backup is now available in Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region – Using AWS Backup, you can centrally create and manage backups of your application data, protect your data from inadvertent or malicious actions with immutable recovery points and vaults, and restore your data in the event of a data loss incident.

Amazon GuardDuty is now available in Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region – You can now use this additional Region to continually monitor and detect anomalous behavior, security threats, and sophisticated multistage attack sequences targeting your AWS accounts to help protect your AWS accounts, workloads, and data.

Our well-known AWS News blog co-author Veliswa did an amazing demo. She live-coded a Duolingo-like app from scratch, just using suggestions and reviews from Amazon Q Developer.

Now, let’s turn to other exciting news in the AWS universe from last week.

Last week’s launches
Here are some launches that got my attention:

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Bring your conversations to WhatsApp — AWS has added support for What’sApp to AWS End User Messaging, so developers can reach users on WhatsApp with multimedia and interactive messaging options. This feature integrates with SMS and push notifications already available. Developers can get started quickly using AWS Management Console.

Amazon Redshift data sharing with data lake tables — This offers a secure and convenient way to share live data lake tables across different Amazon Redshift warehouses. Data sharing of data lake tables in AWS Glue Data Catalog provides live access to the data, so you always see the most up-to-date and consistent information as it’s updated in the data lake.

Zonal shift and zonal autoshift for cross zoned Network Load Balancer — Network Load Balancer (NLB) now supports the Amazon Application Recovery Controller zonal shift and zonal autoshift features on load balancers that are enabled across zones. With Zonal shift, you can quickly shift traffic away from an impaired Availability Zone and recover from events such as bad application deployment and gray failures. Zonal autoshift safely and automatically shifts your traffic away from an Availability Zone when AWS identifies a potential impact to it.

Console to Code to generate infrastructure as a service code — This is by far my favorite launch of the week. Console to Code makes it simple, fast, and cost-effective to move from prototyping in the AWS Management Console to building code for production deployments. You can generate code for their console actions in their preferred format with a single click. The generated code helps you get started and bootstrap your automation pipelines for tasks. Console to Code is powered by Amazon Q Developer.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

A new getting started experience for AWS CodePipeline — AWS CodePipeline introduces a simplified and new getting started experience so you can quickly create new pipelines. When you create a new pipeline using the CodePipeline console, you can now select from a list of pipeline templates across build, automation, and deployment use cases. After selecting a pipeline template, you will be prompted to enter values for the action configuration fields in the pipeline definition, and completing the process will render a fully configured pipeline that’s ready to run.

AWS Lambda detects and stops recursive loops between Lambda and Amazon S3 — Lambda recursive loop detection can now automatically detect and stop recursive loops between AWS Lambda and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). Lambda recursive loop detection, which is enabled by default, is a preventative guardrail that automatically detects and stops recursive invocations between Lambda and other supported services, preventing unintended usage and billing from runaway workloads.

Amazon MemoryDB for Valkey — Amazon MemoryDB is a fully managed, Valkey– and Redis OSS-compatible database service, which provides multi-AZ durability, microsecond read and single-digit millisecond write latency, and high throughput. It is ideal for use cases such as caching, leaderboards, and session stores. With MemoryDB for Valkey, you can benefit from a fully managed experience built on open-source technology while using the security, operational excellence, and reliability that AWS provides. MemoryDB for Valkey also delivers the fastest vector search performance at the highest recall rates among popular vector databases on AWS.

Amazon Polly adds four new English voices for the generative engine and expands to three Regions — Polly is a managed service that turns text into lifelike speech, so you can create applications that talk and to build speech-enabled products depending on your business needs. The generative engine is the most advanced Amazon Polly text-to-speech (TTS) model. With this launch, we add a variety of new synthetic generative English voices to the Amazon Polly portfolio: an Australian English voice Olivia and three US English voices Joanna, Danielle, and Stephen. These voices have more natural pronunciation and prosody. You can use this high-tier product in various industries and for different purposes such as education, publishing, or marketing.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the AWS What’s New Feed page.
