Misty mornings, leaves shining in bright red, yellow, and orange hues, and spooky creatures making an appearance — October has a very special charm. So, how about some new desktop wallpapers to celebrate October’s beauty, and the upcoming Halloween season, of course? Well, we’ve got you covered.

Just like it has been a monthly tradition here at Smashing Magazine for more than 15 years already, the wallpapers in this post were created by artists and designers from across the globe. All of them come in a variety of screen resolutions and can be downloaded for free. A huge thank-you to everyone who shared their designs with us — you are truly smashing!

Now, before you pick your favorite for the month, did you know that you can also get featured in one of our upcoming wallpapers posts? We are always looking for creative talent, so please don’t hesitate to join in. We’d love to see what you come up with!

• You can click on every image to see a larger preview.
• We respect and carefully consider the ideas and motivation behind each and every artist’s work. This is why we give all artists the full freedom to explore their creativity and express emotions and experience through their works. This is also why the themes of the wallpapers weren’t anyhow influenced by us but rather designed from scratch by the artists themselves.

A Night Of Universal Magic And Joy

“From candlelit streets in Europe to vibrant festivals across the Americas, Halloween has become a global celebration that unites people of all ages. It is a magical night where children step into the shoes of their favorite heroes for candy-filled adventures, while adults rediscover the pure, playful excitement of childhood. Across cultures and continents, glowing pumpkins and festive costumes light up the autumn dark, bringing neighbors together, sparking laughter, and proving that joy knows no age limit.” — Designed by PopArt Studio from Novi Sad, Serbia.

“October football begins under the lights. This geometric illustration captures the quiet moment before kickoff: an empty pitch, warm floodlights, and a dark autumn sky. A few fallen leaves hint at the season, while the open composition leaves room for the everyday things on your desktop.” — Designed by Football Charts from Serbia.

Bird Migration Portal

Hello Autumn

“Did you know that squirrels don’t just eat nuts? They really like to eat fruit, too. Since apples are the seasonal fruit of October, I decided to combine both things into a beautiful image.” — Designed by Erin Troch from Belgium.

Transitions

“To me, October is a transitional month. We gradually slide from summer to autumn. That’s why I chose to use a lot of gradients. I also wanted to work with simple shapes, because I think of October as the ‘back to nature/back to basics month’.” — Designed by Jelle Denturck from Belgium.

First Scarf And The Beach

“When I was little, my parents always took me and my sister for a walk at the beach in Nieuwpoort. We didn’t really do those beach walks in the summer but always when the sky started to turn gray and the days became colder. My sister and I always took out our warmest scarfs and played in the sand while my parents walked behind us. I really loved those Saturday or Sunday mornings where we were all together. I think October (when it’s not raining) is the perfect month to go to the beach for ‘uitwaaien’ (to blow out), to walk in the wind and take a break and clear your head, relieve the stress or forget one’s problems.” — Designed by Gwen Bogaert from Belgium.

Shades Of Gold

“We are about to experience the magical imagery of nature, with all the yellows, ochers, oranges, and reds coming our way this fall. With all the subtle sunrises and the burning sunsets before us, we feel so joyful that we are going to shout it out to the world from the top of the mountains.” — Designed by PopArt Studio from Serbia.

Why design pugs specifically in costumes? Because no matter how you look at it, pugs are cute in whatever costume you put them in for trick or treating. The post Under Autumn’s Spell (October 2026 Wallpapers Edition) appeared first on The NOKIA Blog.

The templates in this collection cover many common production needs, including titles, logo reveals, slideshows, video openers, intros, lower thirds, animated typefaces, and icons. Some provide a complete sequence, while others handle one specific part of a larger edit. Colors, typography, footage, audio, and timing can usually be changed to suit personal and client projects.

Free templates vary considerably in quality. Some are carefully organized and include helpful documentation, while others may require fonts, plugins, presets, or older versions of After Effects. Checking these details before downloading will save time later.

The best results come from treating an After Effects template as a foundation rather than a finished design. Small changes to the pacing, type, color, and movement can make a familiar animation feel far more appropriate for your content. The collections below offer plenty of options for different styles, skill levels, and video formats.

What to Look for in an After Effects Template

A polished preview does not tell you everything about a template. Before downloading, check how the project was built and whether it will work with your version of After Effects.

• After Effects compatibility: Confirm the minimum version required to open the project.
• Plugin requirements: Check whether the template relies on paid or third-party plugins.
• Included assets: See whether fonts, sound effects, music, footage, and images are supplied or need to be downloaded separately.
• Project dimensions: Check the resolution, frame rate, orientation, and duration.
• Layer organization: Clearly named compositions, layers, and placeholders will make editing much simpler.
• Documentation: Look for written instructions or a video showing how the main controls work.
• License terms: Confirm whether commercial and client work is permitted and whether attribution is required.

Titles After Effects Templates

A title sequence is often the first design element viewers see, so typography, timing, and movement all matter. Even a simple title can give a video personality and prepare the viewer for what follows.

Designing animated titles from scratch is rewarding, but it can also take hours of testing keyframes, transitions, and effects. A good template handles much of that groundwork while leaving plenty of room for your own creative choices.

This collection features free title templates for a range of styles and project types. Each can be customized in After Effects with your preferred text, colors, fonts, and timing to create an opening that fits your video.

How to Install an After Effects Template

Most After Effects project templates do not need to be installed. They are downloaded, extracted, and opened like any other project file. Keep all supplied folders together so After Effects can locate the linked assets.

• Download the template and extract the ZIP archive to a dedicated project folder.
• Read the included documentation before opening or moving any files.
• Check the required After Effects version, fonts, and plugins.
• Open the supplied .aep file through File > Open Project.
• If After Effects converts an older project, save the converted version as a new file.
• Relink missing footage, images, or audio when prompted.
• Open a .mogrt file through File > Open Project when it needs to be edited in After Effects. Templates intended for Premiere Pro should be added through its Graphics Templates panel.

How to Customize an After Effects Template

Template creators organize projects differently, but most use clearly labeled compositions and placeholder layers. Work on a duplicate of the original project so you can return to the untouched version if an edit causes problems.

• Open the main composition and identify the editable text, image, video, and logo layers.
• Replace placeholder media while preserving its position, scale, and timing.
• Edit the text, then check that longer words do not extend beyond the composition.
• Change the colors and fonts to match the project rather than the preview.
• Adjust keyframes or layer durations when the original animation feels too fast or slow.
• Review any controller, Essential Properties, or Effect Controls layers supplied by the creator.
• Preview the entire sequence before rendering to catch missing media, clipped text, or abrupt cuts.

Tips for Improving Performance

Templates can contain large footage files, complex effects, 3D layers, and many nested compositions. A few temporary adjustments can make editing and previewing them much more manageable.

• Reduce the preview resolution to Half or Quarter while editing.
• Use a Region of Interest when working on one small part of the composition.
• Keep source files and the disk cache on a fast local drive when possible.
• Close unused panels and other memory-heavy applications.
• Temporarily disable motion blur, depth of field, shadows, and demanding effects.
• Use proxies or pre-rendered compositions for large video files and complex scenes.
• Remove unused footage and compositions from a working copy of the project.
• Clear the memory and disk cache if previews become unreliable or storage space runs low.

Final Thoughts & Recommendations

The most useful After Effects template is rarely the one with the busiest preview. A simpler project with clear controls, organized layers, and restrained animation is often easier to adapt and more useful across different types of work.

Choose a template that suits the pace and purpose of the video. A rapid sequence may work well for an event promo but feel out of place in a documentary or portfolio presentation. Typography and movement should support the content rather than compete with it.

Before committing to a template, check its license, After Effects version, plugin requirements, and included assets. Open the project and test a short section before replacing every placeholder. This can reveal performance issues or missing dependencies early in the process.

Finally, spend time changing more than the sample text. Adjust the timing, type choices, colors, transitions, and sound so the finished sequence belongs to the wider project. Free After Effects templates can remove hours of setup, but thoughtful editing is what stops the result from looking like the original preview. Keep an untouched copy nearby, make deliberate changes, and give the animation enough space to do its job.

The goal was to capture that cozy, enveloping feeling of the changing seasons through a simple illustration, the way a woodland canopy naturally forms an archway, framing the workspace in rich amber, rust, and deep burgundy.” — Designed by Popart Studio from Serbia.

September Vibes

“On September 1st, the first day of school in our country, schoolchildren across Serbia would write about what autumn feels like in their neighborhood. Usually, it’s the imagery of fallen leaves rustling under the feet, foggy and chilly mornings with the sun breaking between the murky clouds, a muffled sound of a chainsaw cutting firewood somewhere in the distance, the smells of fruits and vegetables being prepared for home canning. Autumn is the season of serenity, quietness, and reflection.” – Designed by PopArt Studio from Serbia.

Create stunning sliders in no time with Smart Slider 3’s slide library feature. The plugin offers premade slides ready for your custom content. The included slider templates will also come in handy for integrating popular styles with minimal effort.

Want to showcase your content? There’s also a dynamic slide feature that will fetch your site’s latest posts. It’s a good choice for those who want great looks without the extra work.

There’s a lot to like about fetching reviews from third-party websites like Google. New reviews are added automatically, and there’s no manual labor involved. WP Google Review Slider will download your company’s reviews and serve them locally – great for performance.

The plugin integrates with the Google Places API to grab new reviews daily. There’s also an option to display reviews in a static grid format – no slider necessary.

The beauty of Carousel Slider Block is that it’s a block-first solution. It supports all Gutenberg blocks, meaning you can add any type of content imaginable into a carousel.

This design also means you can preview your creations directly in the Block Editor. You’ll also find plenty of controls to personalize your presentation.

Accessibility shouldn’t be an afterthought when building a slider or carousel. Accessible Carousel outputs keyboard-navigable and screen reader-friendly presentations. It also features a graceful fallback when JavaScript isn’t enabled.

The plugin includes a hero carousel, card scroller, and premade block patterns. You can also turn off autoplay to put users in control.

Depicter helps you build interactive sliders and beyond. The included template library will get your project off to a fast start, while an array of visual effects will grab user attention. You also get tools to build carousels, notification bars, and popups. The plugin is a jack-of-all-trades for interactivity.

Here’s a plugin that lets you create compelling sliders without weighing you down. Super Block Slider uses a 5KB JavaScript file to power your slideshows – great for even slow connections. Sliders are responsive and allow you to set different backgrounds for mobile devices.

There are also settings for custom overlays, parallax effects, animations, and navigation styles.

Slideshows can be a great way to show off your WooCommerce products. Woo Product Slider offers a quick setup via templates and the ability to display new and featured products. No worries if your store has hidden products, as you can choose to add them to your slider.

There are also options for displaying product details and an add-to-cart button.

Sticking with e-commerce, Product Gallery Slider for WooCommerce adds interactivity to your product pages. It improves on the standard Woo product gallery with a responsive slider that can handle all your product images.

It’s perfect for displaying product variations, such as colors or styles. Other features include a lightbox, caption, and image zoom toggles.

This August is no exception, of course, so following our monthly tradition, we have a new collection of wallpapers waiting for you below. Created with love by the community for the community, all of them come in a variety of screen resolutions and can be downloaded for free.

A huge thank-you to everyone who shared their wallpapers with us this time around — this post wouldn’t be possible without your kind support!

The Sacred Code Of The Three

“Before complex treaties and endless debates, humanity forged a simpler pact. A timeless triangle of absolute balance. The Immutable Stone, unyielding in its silence. The Gentle Parchment, quiet yet capable of boundlessness. The Sharp Blade, precise and forever restless. None holds absolute power; each surrenders to another in an eternal, perfect loop. On World Rock Paper Scissors Day, we honor the swift wisdom of three simple gestures that can break any deadlock and remind us that every force has its match. Fist, palm, or shears — what is your first move?” — Designed by PopArt Studio from Novi Sad, Serbia.

The post Small Joys And Big Adventures (August 2026 Wallpapers Edition) appeared first on The NOKIA Blog.

Seriously, some of us are spending something close to a BMW’s (or perhaps a Ferrari’s) monthly payment on AI. What started as a small monthly fee to use ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot has turned into something completely different. We have become the proverbial kids in the candy store.

It’s a bad case of consumerism fueled by our desire to experiment with new toys. It doesn’t help that AI companies are making it easy to spend significant money without a second thought. Integrating with your favorite SaaS or even WordPress is easy. Yet, the virtual cash register silently rings with each prompt and automation we create.

Perhaps all of this is happening too fast (maybe that’s the intention). We may be falling into an AI-powered trap that will be difficult to escape.

The Grumpy Designer likes to keep things rational. So, let’s hit the brakes, take a step back, and analyze what we’re doing. We’re the only ones who can stop the insanity, after all.

Your Monthly AI Plan Isn’t All-Encompassing

The early days of AI (a whole 2-3 years ago) were exciting. I had fun playing around with ChatGPT and seeing what silly or productive things I could accomplish.

Its coding abilities may pale compared to what we have today. But it was still incredibly handy for troubleshooting and building basic WordPress plugins. I decided that their $20-per-month Plus plan was a relative bargain. It offered access to the latest models and improved performance.

And it’s still a good deal, if you use it in your browser or their app. An individual performing occasional coding, image generation, or file analysis will get a lot for their money. It’s once you step outside of those boundaries that things become costly and confusing.

Such monthly plans typically don’t provide you with API access. For that, you’ll need to purchase tokens. It’s a common practice across the big AI companies.

I won’t argue with the premise of token-based usage. AI requires a lot of computing power to do its job. It must provide quick and accurate answers to user queries. Then there is the cost associated with training and improving each model.

The real problem lies in educating consumers on the differences. It’s not until you need an API key that you realize your monthly plan won’t cover you.

How Much Will That Task Cost?

Generating an API key and connecting your favorite AI model to a third-party service is simple. Figuring out how many tokens you’ll need isn’t so clear. That’s the downside of not having a good/better/best pricing model.

Reputable AI companies let you set spending caps and disable auto-purchasing once you hit your limit. This will save you from a massive bill. It’s also a good security measure, should your API key fall into the wrong hands.

However, experimentation is the only way to understand the costs of using AI tokens. Figure out what you want to do, ask AI to do it, and check your account dashboard to see how much you spent. The trick is to extrapolate that cost based on how many times you’ll perform a given task.

The other challenge is that some tasks will use more tokens than others. For example, generating a headline for your blog post will likely cost less than generating a featured image. Thus, you’ll want to watch your token usage carefully.

Setting a small spending limit may be fine for light-duty tasks. That strategy won’t work for organizations with multiple users who are highly dependent on AI, though. You’ll quickly run out of tokens and will have to go without the service or set a higher limit.

It appears that companies are beginning to realize that willy-nilly usage of AI is costly. Some will narrow the scope of what these tools do for them. It’s also an argument for developing local AI models. Maybe we still need humans after all?

Put AI in Its Place

Sure, AI can do just about everything. But the decision on when and how to use it is ours to make. The increasing and uncertain token costs are reason enough to scrutinize every task. Some of what we’re doing may not be worth the price.

There are other benefits to being less reliant on AI. Fewer tokens spent means less electricity (and less pollution). The environmental impact is real and only getting worse as more of us employ these models.

It’s also an opportunity to stay connected to our humanity. Imagine all the knowledge we might lose if we cede every task to machines. There is also the potential to lose personal and professional relationships. Do you want to trade that for efficiency?

All of this makes me want to treat tokens as something to spend wisely. From now on, I’ll ask myself: Is this task tokenworthy?

The scent of rain after a hot day, watching the moon rise on a summer night’s sky, or going for a swim in a nearby lake — July is full of small, distinctive moments that can quietly spark new inspiration. So, why not bring a bit of that summer joy to your desktop, too, this month?

For this post, artists and designers from across the globe once again tickled their creativity and designed desktop wallpapers that capture that very special July feeling, just as it has been a monthly tradition here at Smashing Magazine for more than 15 years already. You’ll find their creations compiled below, along with a selection of summery favorites from our wallpapers archives that are just too good to be forgotten.

A huge thank-you to everyone who shared their designs with us this month — this post wouldn’t be possible without your wonderful support! If you too would like to get featured in one of our upcoming wallpapers posts, please don’t hesitate to join in. We can’t wait to see your story come to life! Happy July!

The Sacred Geometry Of Calm

“There is a quiet, hypnotic rhythm that exists just beneath the surface of our busy lives. When we slow down enough to notice, we see that the universe moves in beautiful, repeating circles — in the way light filters through water, how leaves dance as they fall, and how we are drawn together in moments of shared peace. True balance isn’t about standing perfectly still; it is a fluid, continuous motion.” — Designed by PopArt Studio from Novi Sad, Serbia.

“The long-awaited vacation is coming closer. After working all year, we find ourselves with months that, although we don’t stop completely, are lived differently. We enjoy the days and nights more, and if we can, the beach will keep us company. Therefore, we’ll spend this month in Australia, enjoying the coral reefs and diving without limits.” — Designed by Veronica Valenzuela from Spain.

Everyone has a creative spark in them. Some bring their ideas to life with digital tools, others capture the perfect moment with a camera or love to grab pen and paper to create little doodles or pieces of lettering. And even if you don’t think of yourself as particularly creative, who knows? There might be a hidden talent waiting to be discovered!

That’s exactly what our monthly wallpapers series has been all about for over 15 years now. It’s a chance to step away from the everyday and dive into a fun, creative project. And this month is no different!

Talented artists and designers from all over the world have once again put their skills to work, creating unique and inspiring desktop wallpapers to brighten up your screens this June. You’ll find their designs below, along with some favorites from our archives that were just too good to leave out. A huge thank you to everyone who shared their creations with us this month — you’re smashing!

If you too would like to get featured in one of our upcoming wallpapers posts, please don’t hesitate to join in. We can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with! Happy June!

Drifting Into June

“June marks the beginning of summer and the end of the semester for many colleges. When I think of summer, I think of walks along the park with my family watching ducks swimming in the lake, and swimming in our pool with my siblings. Naturally from there I put them together to create an amusing scene of a duck slowly paddling around in an inner tube.” — Designed by Emma Kim from the United States.

Dancing In The Kitchen

“June is such an iconic summer month, filled with sunshine, hope, and possibilities. When we raise both hands above our heads in celebratory dance, we symbolically release our cares for the day. When we do this dance in the kitchen, we not only release but also celebrate our bodies, our souls, and nourishment we’re about to give ourselves. This digital collage represents the freedom of movement, of dance, of joyful expression, of nourishment, creativity, and hope. May we all dance in the kitchen.” — Designed by Sue Jenkins from the United States.

This plugin turns such stereotypes on their head. Install Gravity Forms, and you can certainly build a standard contact form. But you can also create polls, multi-step surveys, user registration systems, and sell products. Seriously, we could go on for hours with potential use cases.

There’s a ton of functionality built into the core plugin. However, an ever-growing selection of free and paid add-ons is what transforms a form into a Swiss Army knife for your WordPress website. You might be surprised at the possibilities.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best add-ons for Gravity Forms. You’ll find a mix of niche uses from a wide range of developers. Let’s blast off and do more with our forms!

We start here because form security is always an important consideration. Gravity Forms Zero Spam seamlessly protects your form from bots and other nuisances. Activate the plugin and… that’s it.

The plugin includes options for what to do with entries marked as spam (delete them or move them to a spam folder) and whether to send you a periodic spam summary. It’s the quickest way to get some peace of mind.

This add-on is included with certain Gravity Forms licenses and automates the publishing of user-submitted content. You can map form fields to WordPress post titles, content, and other custom data points. Users can even upload files for use as a featured image.

Best of all, you’ll have control of the entire process. For example, you can manually review posts before publishing, allow users to edit their posts on the front end, or password-protect submitted posts. It also works with third-party post types from WooCommerce, The Events Calendar, and more.

Use Gravity PDF to turn your form entries into custom PDF files that can be attached to form notifications. It’s perfect for creating printable invoices, gift certificates, or anything that needs to be archived.

The free version of the plugin includes features for customizing the look of your PDF (add your logo or fonts), while the commercial version offers more design options and on-screen previews.

Here’s a plugin that targets power users. Power Boost for Gravity Forms adds an array of handy features, including a “last entry” column in your form list, support for merge tags in HTML fields, the ability to resend feeds, and a “copy shortcode” link.

You can also replace a form by uploading a JSON file. In short, lots of little things add up to more convenience.

Gravity Forms Encrypted Fields helps you manage and secure sensitive user information. This commercial plugin encrypts chosen fields while still making their contents visible to approved users. Everyone else will see your custom “restricted data” message.

You can choose from several encryption types and control which fields to protect.

Do you need complete control over Gravity Forms notifications and confirmations? Advanced Merge Tags lets you tweak field output to your heart’s content. Change the text case of field values, append or prepend content, retrieve matching values from other forms, character conversion, and more.

There are also custom merge tags for the current timestamp, parent slug, and modifying an entry’s creation date. It’s everything you need to customize your form output.

A form can be so much more than a way to send a message. For example, Gravity Booking will turn your forms into a fully-fledged appointment scheduling system. Use it to build a custom booking form that allows customers to pay online.

Other features include support for multiple locations, email reminders, holidays/blackout dates, and Google Calendar synchronization.

This official Gravity Forms add-on turns your form submissions into Trello cards. Choose which Trello board entries are added to and set labels and due dates. Cards can be automatically assigned to team members, and attached files are included.

You can use Gravity Forms’ conditional logic feature to configure how and when cards are created.

Best Gravity Forms Add-ons at a Glance

Rocket Fuel for WordPress Forms

Gravity Forms can turn an ordinary form into something powerful. It’s one of the most versatile plugins in the WordPress ecosystem. That’s in no small part due to the library of official and third-party add-ons on the market. The items above are only the tip of the iceberg.

In all, it allows us to rethink what’s possible when building with WordPress. The right form could replace the need for other plugins. For example, eschew that shopping cart and create an order form instead. You might also use a form for common features like front-end posting and user registration.

So, check out the add-ons above and use your creativity. There are so many possibilities!

May has a way of sneaking in with longer days, softer light, and that first real hint of summer in the air. It’s the season of fresh ideas and just enough energy to start something new, or finally pick up something you’ve been putting off. And sometimes, all it takes to spark that little bit of inspiration is a fresh view… even if it’s just on your desktop.

That’s where our monthly wallpapers series comes in. For the past 15 years, artists and designers from around the world have been contributing their designs to celebrate each new month. This May is no exception. Created with care and a unique personal touch, every wallpaper in this collection comes in a variety of screen resolutions and can be downloaded for free. A huge thank-you to everyone who got creative — this post wouldn’t be possible without your wonderful support!

If you too would like to get featured in one of our upcoming wallpapers posts, please don’t hesitate to join in. We can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with! Happy May!

The post A Fresh View In May (2026 Wallpapers Edition) appeared first on The NOKIA Blog.

I’m excited to announce Amazon S3 Files, a new file system that seamlessly connects any AWS compute resource with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).

More than a decade ago, as an AWS trainer, I spent countless hours explaining the fundamental differences between object storage and file systems. My favorite analogy was comparing S3 objects to books in a library (you can’t edit a page, you need to replace the whole book) versus files on your computer that you can modify page by page. I drew diagrams, created metaphors, and helped customers understand why they needed different storage types for different workloads. Well, today that distinction becomes a bit more flexible.

With S3 Files, Amazon S3 is the first and only cloud object store that offers fully-featured, high-performance file system access to your data. It makes your buckets accessible as file systems. This means changes to data on the file system are automatically reflected in the S3 bucket and you have fine-grained control over synchronization. S3 Files can be attached to multiple compute resources enabling data sharing across clusters without duplication.

Until now, you had to choose between Amazon S3 cost, durability, and the services that can natively consume data from it or a file system’s interactive capabilities. S3 Files eliminates that tradeoff. S3 becomes the central hub for all your organization’s data. It’s accessible directly from any AWS compute instance, container, or function, whether you’re running production applications, training ML models, or building agentic AI systems.

You can access any general purpose bucket as a native file system on your Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, containers running on Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) or Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), or AWS Lambda functions. The file system presents S3 objects as files and directories, supporting all Network File System (NFS) v4.1+ operations like creating, reading, updating, and deleting files.

As you work with specific files and directories through the file system, associated file metadata and contents are placed onto the file system’s high-performance storage. By default, files that benefit from low-latency access are stored and served from the high performance storage. For files not stored on high performance storage such as those needing large sequential reads, S3 Files automatically serves those files directly from Amazon S3 to maximize throughput. For byte-range reads, only the requested bytes are transferred, minimizing data movement and costs.

The system also supports intelligent pre-fetching to anticipate your data access needs. You have fine-grained control over what gets stored on the file system’s high performance storage. You can decide whether to load full file data or metadata only, which means you can optimize for your specific access patterns.

Under the hood, S3 Files uses Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) and delivers ~1ms latencies for active data. The file system supports concurrent access from multiple compute resources with NFS close-to-open consistency, making it ideal for interactive, shared workloads that mutate data, from agentic AI agents collaborating through file-based tools to ML training pipelines processing datasets.

Let me show you how to get started.

Creating my first Amazon S3 file system, mounting, and using it from an EC2 instance is straightforward.

I have an EC2 instance and a general purpose bucket. In this demo, I configure an S3 file system and access the bucket from an EC2 instance, using regular file system commands.

For this demo, I use the AWS Management Console. You can also use the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) or infrastructure as code (IaC).

Here is the architecture diagram for this demo.

Step 1: Create an S3 file system.

On the Amazon S3 section of the console, I choose File systems and then Create file system.

I enter the name of the bucket I want to expose as a file system and choose Create file system.

Step 2: Discover the mount target.

A mount target is a network endpoint that will live in my virtual private cloud (VPC). It allows my EC2 instance to access the S3 file system.

The console creates the mount targets automatically. I take notes of the Mount target IDs on the Mount targets tab.

When using the CLI, two separate commands are necessary to create the file system and its mount targets. First, I create the S3 file system with create-file-system. Then, I create the mount target with create-mount-target.

Step 3: Mount the file system on my EC2 instance.

After it’s connected to an EC2 instance, I type:

sudo mkdir /home/ec2-user/s3files sudo mount -t s3files fs-0aa860d05df9afdfe:/ /home/ec2-user/s3files

I can now work with my S3 data directly through the mounted file system in ~/s3files, using standard file operations.

When I make updates to my files in the file system, S3 automatically manages and exports all updates as a new object or a new version on an existing object back in my S3 bucket within minutes.

Changes made to objects on the S3 bucket are visible in the file system within a few seconds but can sometimes take a minute or longer.

# Create a file on the EC2 file system
echo "Hello S3 Files" > s3files/hello.txt

# and verify it's here
ls -al s3files/hello.txt
 -rw-r--r--. 1 ec2-user ec2-user 15 Oct 22 13:03 s3files/hello.txt

# See? the file is also on S3
aws s3 ls s3://s3files-aws-news-blog/hello.txt
2025-10-22 13:04:04 15 hello.txt

# And the content is identical!
aws s3 cp s3://s3files-aws-news-blog/hello.txt . && cat hello.txt
Hello S3 Files

Things to know

Let me share some important technical details that I think you’ll find useful.

Another question I frequently hear in customer conversations is about choosing the right file service for your workloads. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: AWS and its seemingly overlapping services, keeping cloud architects entertained during their architecture review meetings. Let me help demystify this one.

S3 Files works best when you need interactive, shared access to data that lives in Amazon S3 through a high performance file system interface. It’s ideal for workloads where multiple compute resources—whether production applications, agentic AI agents using Python libraries and CLI tools, or machine learning (ML) training pipelines—need to read, write, and mutate data collaboratively. You get shared access across compute clusters without data duplication, sub-millisecond latency, and automatic synchronization with your S3 bucket.

For workloads migrating from on-premises NAS environments, Amazon FSx provides the familiar features and compatibility you need. Amazon FSx is also ideal for high-performance computing (HPC) and GPU cluster storage with Amazon FSx for Lustre. It’s particularly valuable when your applications require specific file system capabilities from Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Amazon FSx for OpenZFS, or Amazon FSx for Windows File Server.

Pricing and availability

S3 Files is available today in all commercial AWS Regions.

You pay for the portion of data stored in your S3 file system, for small file read and all write operations to the file system, and for S3 requests during data synchronization between the file system and the S3 bucket. The Amazon S3 pricing page has all the details.

From discussions with customers, I believe S3 Files helps simplify cloud architectures by eliminating data silos, synchronization complexity, and manual data movement between objects and files. Whether you’re running production tools that already work with file systems, building agentic AI systems that rely on file-based Python libraries and shell scripts, or preparing datasets for ML training, S3 Files lets these interactive, shared, hierarchical workloads access S3 data directly without choosing between the durability of Amazon S3 and cost benefits and a file system’s interactive capabilities. You can now use Amazon S3 as the place for all your organizations’ data, knowing the data is accessible directly from any AWS compute instance, container, and function.
