That single post introduced resizable Linux virtual servers in the cloud, billed by the hour, with one instance type (
m1.small
) in one Region (US East). It was minimal yet useful, and it changed how the world thinks about computing infrastructure.

In 2021, Jeff covered the fifteen years of EC2 with the backstory and memorable EC2 launches. Over the last five years, AWS has continued to push the boundaries of what cloud computing can deliver, building custom silicon for general-purpose and AI workloads and expanding EC2 into new form factors and deployment models that our customers in 2006 could not have imagined.

The 20 years in brief
In his 15th anniversary post, Jeff chose important milestones of EC2 that established the foundational building blocks that customers still rely on today. Amazon Elastic Block Store (2008) provided persistent block storage. Elastic Load Balancing, Auto Scaling, and Amazon CloudWatch (2009) made applications scalable and highly available. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (2009) gave customers logically isolated networks. AWS Nitro System (2017) enabled faster innovation and enhanced security. AWS Graviton processors (2018) were designed for cost-sensitive scale-out workloads.

Over 20 years, EC2 grew from one to over 1,200 instance types to meet customer needs across general-purpose, compute-, memory-, and storage-optimized, accelerated computing, and high-performance computing families. These instances expanded from one AWS Region to 39 Regions globally. AWS also extended EC2 beyond the Region boundary with AWS Outposts (2018) running EC2 instances locally, AWS Local Zones (2019) place globally, and AWS Wavelength (2019) inside global 5G telecommunications carrier networks.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

While I hate to play favorites, I want to choose some of my favorite EC2 launches of the past five years:

AWS Inferentia for ML inference at scale (2019): We introduced purpose-built ML inference instances (inf1) with AWS Inferentia chips. Amazon EC2 Inf2 instances became generally available in April 2023 for large-scale generative AI inference workloads. Together with the Inferentia family, AWS Trainium instances now give customers a full stack of AWS-designed silicon optimized for every phase of the AI lifecycle both inference and training.

EC2 Mac instances (2020): The first Mac instances (mac1) were built on Apple Mac mini with Intel Core i7 (Coffee Lake) on the AWS Nitro System. Mac M1 (mac2) instances launched in July 2022 as the first Arm-based macOS instances on EC2. M2 Pro Mac instances followed in 2023, M4 and M4 Pro Mac instances in 2025, M3 Ultra Mac instances and M4 Max Mac instances in 2026, giving Apple developers a complete range of cloud-based build and test environments for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS apps.

AWS Trainium for full-stack AI workloads at scale (2021): In November 2021, we previewed Trn1 instances with AWS Trainium accelerators optimized for high-performance deep learning training. In December 2024, Trn2 instances powered by AWS Trainium2 launched, with Trn2 UltraServers linking 64 Trainium2 accelerators via NeuronLink for training trillion-parameter foundation models. At AWS re:Invent 2025, Trn3 UltraServers powered by AWS Trainium3 deliver the best token economics for next-generation agentic, reasoning, and video generation applications. A single Trn3 UltraServer interconnects up to 144 Trainium3 chips to train and serve the largest frontier models. Now, AWS Trainium3 delivers the leading price-performance for high-performance AI training and inference at scale.

EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML (2023): This new EC2 usage model further democratizes ML democratizes ML by making it easy to access GPU instances to train and deploy ML and generative AI models. You reserve the GPU capacity you need (initially P5 instances) for a future date and only for the duration you require. In November 2024, EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML added supported for provisioning in a matter of minutes and extending up to six months. Now, EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML supports P6-B300, P6-B200, P5e, P5en, P4d, P4de, Trn1, Trn2, and Trn3 instances in addition to P5.

AWS Graviton5 (2025): Building on eight years of Graviton innovation since 2018, we previewed Graviton5 chips in AWS re:Invent 2025 and launched M9g and M9gd instances powered by Graviton5 and built on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System. C9g and C9gd followed in June 2026. Now, Graviton5 features 192 cores, a 5x larger cache, and up to 33% lower inter-core latency, making it well suited for the growing demands of agentic AI workloads such as real-time reasoning, code generation, and multi-step task orchestration that require continuous, high-throughput CPU compute at scale.

AWS Nitro Isolation Engine (2026): Customers wanted to see, not just hear from us, proof of workload isolation in the Nitro Hypervisor. The Nitro Isolation Engine is a purpose-built component inside the Nitro Hypervisor, harnessing formal verification to provide mathematical assurance that customer workloads are isolated from each other and AWS operators, pioneering a new standard for mathematically proven cloud security. This feature is also based on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System which has continued to evolve since our introduction in 2017.

The foundation underneath it all
Despite two decades of innovation, the fundamental value proposition of Amazon EC2 has not changed. Customers use it to get secure, resizable compute capacity in minutes, pay only for what they consume, and scale on demand without long-term commitments. That same flexibility now extends to AI workloads at a scale no one anticipated in 2006.

EC2 remains the foundational compute layer of AWS. Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, AWS Lambda, AWS Fargate, AWS Batch, Amazon EMR, Amazon SageMaker AI, and Amazon Bedrock ultimately run on EC2 capacity. Every architectural pattern customers have built over the past twenty years, from simple web servers to trillion-parameter foundation model training clusters, starts with a decision to launch an instance.

Twenty years later, that strategy of creating services that are minimal-yet-useful, launching quickly, and iterating rapidly in response to your feedback continues to guide how we build. The next twenty years of cloud computing will demand capabilities we have not yet imagined. Amazon EC2 will continue to be the foundation where your workloads run.

Last week’s launches
Here are some launches that got my attention:

Amazon EC2 application status checks: Amazon EC2 introduces a new status check that helps you detect and respond to application-level issues on your EC2 instances. With application status checks, EC2 monitors applications to detect issues such as a web server that has stopped accepting requests, a Docker daemon that is not running, an incorrect networking configuration, or a network interface that is no longer passing traffic. To learn more, visit the Application status checks documentation.

AWS IAM role manager to set up IAM roles automatically: You can use a new role manager that automatically sets up the IAM roles your AWS services need. When you set up a supported service in the console, role manager creates a default role on your behalf, or reuses one that already exists in your account if it matches the required permissions. Role manager supports six AWS service consoles at launch. To learn more, read How AWS IAM role manager rethinks the starting point for IAM roles.

OpenAI Daybreak available to eligible customers on Amazon Bedrock: Daybreak is the cyber defense initiative from OpenAI that gives defenders governed access to frontier AI for cybersecurity work. For most security teams, Daybreak Blue, powered by GPT-5.6 Sol, serves as the starting point across defensive workflows including vulnerability discovery, detection engineering, and incident response. Daybreak Red, powered by a new GPT-5.6 Cyber, is designed for advanced, authorized tasks such as vulnerability research, exploit reproduction, and mitigation development. To enroll, contact OpenAI or reach out to your AWS account team for guidance on eligibility. To learn more, read the AI Blog post.

New foundation models in Amazon SageMaker JumpStart: We’re expanding the portfolio of foundation models available to AWS customers. These models address different enterprise AI challenges with specialized capabilities:

The deprecation of email validation in AWS Certificate Manager: ACM will discontinue support for email-validated public certificates by September 30, 2027. If you use email validation for your ACM public certificates, you need to migrate to DNS validation before that date. For Amazon CloudFront distributions, HTTP validation is also available.

The next-generation AWS VPN Client with CLI support and admin controls: You can use a new AWS VPN Client built on OpenVPN3. With the new client, you get full backward compatibility with existing AWS Client VPN endpoints while delivering the automation capabilities and security posture that enterprise networking teams have been asking for.

Oracle Exadata on Exascale for Oracle AI Database@AWS: ExaDB-XS brings Exadata-class performance and availability through a consumption-based model. With ExaDB-XS, you can scale compute and storage independently in small increments and pay only for what you consume.

Today, we’re announcing Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base, a new set of capabilities that enables developers to build enterprise-grade generative AI applications with their proprietary data in minutes. Organizations building agentic AI applications need secure, reliable, and up-to-date access to enterprise-wide data to deliver accurate, fast, and trusted outcomes. Managed Knowledge Base abstracts away the complexity of building and managing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, allowing developers to focus on business outcomes rather than infrastructure management.

Developers building knowledge bases for their agents face three key challenges today:

Connecting to enterprise data – Enterprise knowledge lives across disparate systems with different content types, access control lists, and document formats. Building and maintaining custom connectors for each source adds complexity that slows down development.

Optimizing RAG accuracy – Best practices for retrieval-augmented generation keep evolving. Developers need to experiment with different parsing strategies, chunking approaches, embedding models, and agentic retrieval behaviors to get accurate answers from their data.

Managing infrastructure at scale – Organizations need to serve large knowledge bases with millions of documents, or manage thousands of smaller knowledge bases across teams. Both patterns require reliable infrastructure, security enforcement, and cost control.

These challenges require developers to repeatedly perform undifferentiated work instead of focusing on their applications.

Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base addresses these challenges by abstracting away the multiple infrastructure components developers traditionally have to assemble and maintain themselves (storage, retrieval, embeddings, re-ranking, and foundation model selection) into a single managed primitive. By default, the service automatically selects and manages a default embeddings model, re-ranker model, and foundational model on your behalf, so you can get up to speed quickly without needing to pick or maintain one yourself. On top of this managed foundation, three core innovations further improve ease of use and accuracy:

Native data connectors – Six pre-built ingestion connectors that natively pull enterprise data and permissions from SaaS applications, eliminating the overhead developers face in managing application-specific requirements. At launch, we support Amazon S3, SharePoint, Confluence, Web Crawler, Google Drive, and OneDrive.

Smart Parsing – Different content types and sources require different approaches to achieve accurate retrieval. Smart Parsing handles this complexity automatically, selecting the right parsing strategy for each data type and connector to provide the highest accuracy for your agents.

Agentic Retriever – Optimized for complex queries that require multiturn, multihop retrieval within a single knowledge base or across multiple knowledge bases. Agentic Retriever automatically infers end-user intent and draws relevant context from institutional knowledge spread across data sources and modalities.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

With just a few lines of code, Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base automatically manages and scales the end-to-end RAG pipeline that powers your enterprise knowledge agents. For agent builders, it’s available as a pre-built target type in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, reducing integration to a few lines of code, auto-generating role-based permissions, and providing observability and evaluation metrics in the AgentCore Observability dashboard.

Getting started with Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base

Creating a Managed Knowledge Base is straightforward. Navigate to the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore console or the Amazon Bedrock console, open the Knowledge Bases page, and choose Create Managed KB. The experience is the same in both consoles. You will see that Unstructured Vector Store KB is now available as the recommended option, alongside the other knowledge base types you may already be familiar with:

An optimized set of defaults will be presented, allowing you to create your knowledge base in just a few clicks. Once the data is synced, you can integrate the knowledge base with your agent or provide it as a tool for your foundation model and start querying.

Smart Parsing for accurate data ingestion

One of the key challenges in building knowledge bases is preparing diverse data types for accurate retrieval. Once you point Managed Knowledge Base at your data sources, Smart Parsing automatically determines the optimal parsing strategy for each data type and connector, no extra configuration is required.

Smart Parsing combines multiple techniques:

Connector-specific data models – Optimized handling for each data source. For example, the Web Crawler connector preserves HTML structure including embedded images and tables, ensuring rich content is not dropped during ingestion. SharePoint connectors maintain document hierarchy and relationships between files.

Multimodal processing – Automatic detection and processing of different content types within documents. The system identifies bounding boxes in documents, then sends them to foundation models for data extraction, captioning, and scene description in video files.

Optimized chunking – Smart Parsing leverages foundation models to understand document structure and extract meaningful content, ensuring that complex documents with mixed formats are properly indexed. Intelligent defaults balance retrieval accuracy with performance based on document type and content structure, while advanced users can customize chunking strategies when needed.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

This automated approach eliminates weeks of experimentation typically required to achieve production-quality retrieval accuracy, while still preserving the flexibility to customize when needed.

Using Agentic Retriever for complex queries

After your data is ingested, you can start querying your knowledge base. Generative AI applications often struggle with complex user queries that require reasoning, recursive multi-step retrieval, and intermediate evaluations of results. Consider a user asking two related questions: “What is the cloud infrastructure budget for the ML platform team?” and “Does our expense policy allow prepaying annual commitments?” A single retrieval step might surface documents about the ML platform team but fail to connect the budget information with the expense policy needed to fully answer the question.

Picture 3 – Agentic Retriever decomposes complex user queries into a step-by-step plan, performing multi-hop retrieval across multiple knowledge bases and combining results to deliver accurate, grounded responses

Agentic Retriever solves this by creating a step-by-step query plan: 1. Which team owns the ML platform, and what is their cloud infrastructure budget? 2. What does the expense policy say about prepaying annual commitments? 3. Does the policy allow the ML platform team to prepay against this budget?

The system performs multi-hop retrieval and reasoning at each step, and once it has gathered sufficient relevant passages, it stops the search process and returns the top results. By abstracting away the complexity of building a separate multi-hop reasoning pipeline, this approach dramatically improves accuracy for complex queries while letting developers focus on their agentic search applications instead of orchestration logic.

You can try Agentic Retriever directly from the test panel of your knowledge base in the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore console. Select Agentic retrieval only as the retrieval type to let the system automatically plan and execute multi-step queries across your knowledge bases:

Picture 4 – Test Knowledge Base panel showing Agentic retrieval with answer generation selected as the retrieval type, with model selection and maximum agentic iterations options

Enabling MCP with Bedrock AgentCore

Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base seamlessly integrates with AgentCore Gateway as a native target type. This integration eliminates the need for manual integration and provides built-in observability, policy enforcement, and automatic permission management.

You can navigate to the Amazon Bedrock AgentCore console or SDK and create an AgentCore Gateway or select an existing one. When adding targets to your gateway, you will find Knowledge Base as a new pre-built target type alongside other options such as MCP server, Lambda ARN, REST API, and other integrations. Simply select your knowledge base ID to expose it through the gateway:

Picture 5 – Add targets page in AgentCore Gateway showing Knowledge Base as a new pre-built target type, with the knowledge base ID selector and runtime retrieval mode options

Add targets page in AgentCore Gateway showing Knowledge Base as a new pre-built target type, with the knowledge base ID selector and runtime retrieval mode options

Gateway exposes the standard Model Context Protocol (MCP), so the knowledge base tools are automatically discovered by clients from any MCP-compatible framework, including Strands Agents, LangChain, CrewAI, LlamaIndex, and LangGraph. No custom integration code is required.

Model choice and flexibility

Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base preserves the flexibility developers expect from Amazon Bedrock. Every foundation model available on Bedrock can power the generation step, and developers can select from different embedding and re-ranking models to optimize retrieval for their specific use case, enabling teams to fine-tune accuracy and cost-performance without changing infrastructure.

Unlike managed solutions that lock you into specific model providers, Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base separates the infrastructure management (connectors, parsing, storage, retrieval orchestration) from model selection. This means you can:

Take advantage of the latest models – Adopt the latest embedding, re-ranking, and foundation models as they become available to improve accuracy, latency, and cost for your application without rebuilding your RAG pipeline.

Optimize for price-performance – Choose smaller, faster models for simple queries and more capable models for complex reasoning tasks, all using the same knowledge base infrastructure.

Use Bedrock embedding models – While Smart Parsing provides optimized defaults, you can configure Bedrock embedding models when your domain requires specialized semantic understanding.

Maintain consistency with existing applications – If you’re already using Bedrock Knowledge Bases APIs (
Retrieve
,
StartIngest
,
StopIngest
,
IngestKnowledgeBaseDocuments
), Managed Knowledge Base uses the same APIs, so migration requires no code changes, just point to the new knowledge base ID.

This approach ensures you can spend time on your generative AI application without losing the ability to change models based on evolving requirements or new model capabilities.

Get started today

Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base is available today in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Sydney, Tokyo), Europe (Dublin, Frankfurt, London), and AWS GovCloud (US-West) Regions. For Regional availability and future roadmap, visit AWS Capabilities by Region.

With Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base, you pay for what you use with no upfront commitments. Pricing is based on two dimensions: the size of indexed data stored and the number of retrievals performed (on-demand). For detailed pricing information, visit the Amazon Bedrock pricing page. Bedrock is also a part of the AWS Free Tier that new AWS customers can use to get started at no cost and explore key AWS services.

These capabilities work with any open source framework such as CrewAI, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, and Strands Agents, and with any foundation model. Bedrock services can be used together or independently, and you can get started using your favorite AI-assisted development environment with the AgentCore open source MCP server.

Startups operate at a different frequency: the urgency is real, the constraints are tight, and the stakes are personal. Helping them navigate the challenge of proving their business model requires not just technical depth but a willingness to move fast, challenge assumptions, and make bets on the right architecture before the perfect data exists.

What I love most is that the work is never abstract: every decision I help a startup make has a direct impact on whether they ship on time, stay within budget, and earn the next round of confidence from their investors.

Let’s dive into this week’s AWS news.

Headlines

Now Open — AWS Local Zones in Istanbul, Türkiye — AWS has opened a new Local Zone in Istanbul, Türkiye, bringing AWS compute, storage, and networking services to one of Europe’s largest metropolitan areas. AWS Local Zones place AWS infrastructure much closer to large population and industry, enabling organizations to store and process data within specific jurisdictions to meet data residency requirements, while delivering single-digit millisecond latency for applications that need to run closer to end users. This supports compliance needs across financial services, government, telecoms, and healthcare.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

A Local Zone is a significant infrastructure investment: it requires the same level of operational excellence as a Region, with consistent hardware, power, and networking infrastructure, and reflects AWS’s continued expansion into underserved markets.

For builders in Türkiye, this opens up a new set of architectural possibilities. You can now store and back up data within Turkish borders to help meet data residency requirements, and run latency-sensitive workloads in the Istanbul Local Zone while connecting seamlessly to the AWS Region—giving you the flexibility to architect hybrid applications without managing your own data center infrastructure.

To learn more about our decade-long commitment, available services, customers and partners in Türkiye, visit the launch blog post.

Last week’s launches

Here are some launches and updates that caught my attention:

Security Hub Extended expands to 21 curated partner solutions across 9 categories — AWS Security Hub Extended now integrates with 21 curated partner security solutions spanning 9 categories, including endpoint protection, cloud security posture management, threat intelligence, and more. You can now get consolidated, prioritized security findings from a broader ecosystem of tools directly within Security Hub, without requiring custom integrations. This is particularly valuable for enterprise security teams that want a unified view of their security posture across AWS and third-party tooling.

Amazon SageMaker AI now supports OpenAI-compatible APIs for inference endpoints — You can now call Amazon SageMaker AI inference endpoints using OpenAI-compatible APIs, making it significantly easier to migrate AI workloads from OpenAI to SageMaker — or to build applications that work across multiple providers — with no SDK changes required. This lowers the migration barrier for teams that started prototyping with OpenAI and are now looking to move to a more scalable, cost-controlled infrastructure on AWS. Your existing application code works as-is; you simply point it at your SageMaker endpoint.

Introducing pre-fetching and IAM role assumption for AWS Secrets Manager Agent — The AWS Secrets Manager Agent can now pre-fetch secrets at startup and assume IAM roles to retrieve them, eliminating the cold-start latency associated with on-demand secret retrieval in latency-sensitive applications. You can configure the agent to preload the secrets your application needs before it starts serving traffic, reducing the risk of secrets-related latency spikes in production. IAM role assumption support also makes it easier to share the agent across workloads with different permission boundaries.

AWS announces ExtendDB, an open-source DynamoDB-compatible adapter — AWS has open-sourced ExtendDB, a DynamoDB-compatible adapter that allows you to use the DynamoDB API and data model on top of alternative backend storage systems. This is particularly useful for local development and testing workflows — you can write against the DynamoDB API without requiring a live AWS connection. It’s also valuable for scenarios where you need DynamoDB-compatible semantics with more control over the underlying storage layer. It’s a practical tool for teams that want to build portability into their data access layer.

AWS SAM CLI adds AWS CloudFormation Language Extensions support to accelerate local serverless development — The AWS SAM CLI now supports AWS CloudFormation Language Extensions locally, meaning you can use transforms, dynamic references, and other CloudFormation language features directly in your local development and testing workflows. This closes a long-standing gap between what you can test locally and what runs in production, making local serverless development faster and more reliable. If you build serverless applications with SAM and encounter edge cases in local testing, this update will meaningfully improve your experience.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the What’s New with AWS page.

Other AWS news

Here are some additional posts and resources that you might find interesting:

Amazon Bedrock introduces new advanced prompt optimization and migration tool — This post covers the newly launched Advanced Prompt Optimization and Migration Tool in Amazon Bedrock, which helps you automatically tune your prompts for better model performance and assists you in migrating prompts across different foundation models. It’s a must-read if you’re iterating on prompt quality for production AI workloads.

Introducing Kiro Web — Kiro, AWS’s AI-powered development environment, now has a web-based interface. Kiro Web lets you access Kiro’s spec-driven development, AI chat, and agent capabilities directly from your browser, without needing to install the desktop IDE. This is a great step toward making AI-assisted development more accessible — whether you’re doing a quick review, prototyping from a new machine, or introducing your team to the Kiro workflow.

Announcing updated retry behavior for AWS SDKs and Tools — AWS has updated the default retry behavior across its SDKs and CLI tools, improving resilience for transient errors without requiring configuration changes from developers. The updated behavior includes smarter backoff strategies and better handling of throttling responses. If you’re running production workloads that occasionally hit API rate limits or transient failures, this update improves reliability out of the box. It’s worth reading to understand what changed and how it affects your applications.

Bitnami image removal from ECR Public — AWS has announced that Bitnami container images will be removed from Amazon ECR Public. If your workloads pull Bitnami images from ECR Public, you should review this post to understand the timeline and migration path. The Bitnami images remain available directly from Bitnami’s own registry, and this post explains how to update your image references to continue pulling them without interruption.

Late March took me to Seattle for the Specialist Tech Conference, one of the most energizing gatherings of AWS specialists from around the world. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with peers, exchange experiences, and go deep on the latest advancements in Generative AI and Amazon Bedrock — and a powerful reminder of something I truly believe in: when specialists come together to challenge each other, explore edge cases, and co-create solutions, the impact goes far beyond the meeting room. In a fast-moving space like AI, having a strong internal community isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a competitive advantage.

Now, let’s get into this week’s AWS news…

Headlines

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Anthropic partnership: Claude on AWS Trainium and Graviton, and Claude Cowork in Amazon Bedrock – This week, AWS and Anthropic deepened their product collaboration in meaningful ways for builders. Anthropic is now training its most advanced foundation models on AWS Trainium and Graviton infrastructure, co-engineering directly at the silicon level with Annapurna Labs to maximize computational efficiency from the hardware up through the full stack.

Claude Cowork is now available in Amazon Bedrock — Claude Cowork brings Anthropic’s collaborative AI capabilities directly to enterprise builders within the AWS ecosystem, enabling teams to work alongside Claude as a true collaborator, not just a tool. You can now deploy Claude Cowork within your existing Amazon Bedrock environment, keeping your data secure within AWS while leveraging the full power of Claude for team-based AI workflows.

Claude Platform on AWS (Coming soon) — A unified developer experience to build, deploy, and scale Claude-powered applications without leaving AWS. If you’re building with Generative AI on AWS, this is a significant step forward in what you’ll be able to do with Claude directly through Amazon Bedrock.

Meta signs agreement with AWS to power agentic AI on Amazon’s Graviton chips — Meta has signed an agreement to deploy AWS Graviton processors at scale, starting with tens of millions of Graviton cores to power CPU-intensive agentic AI workloads — including real-time reasoning, code generation, search, and multi-step task orchestration.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Last week’s launches

Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

AWS Lambda functions can now mount Amazon S3 buckets as file systems with S3 Files — You can now mount Amazon S3 buckets as file systems in AWS Lambda using S3 Files, enabling your functions to perform standard file operations without downloading data for processing. Built on Amazon EFS, S3 Files provides the simplicity of a file system with the scalability, durability, and cost-effectiveness of S3 — and multiple Lambda functions can connect to the same file system simultaneously, sharing data through a common workspace. This is particularly valuable for AI and machine learning workloads where agents need to persist memory and share state across pipeline steps.

Amazon EKS Hybrid Nodes gateway for hybrid Kubernetes networking — Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service now offers the Amazon EKS Hybrid Nodes gateway, which automates networking between your EKS cluster VPC and Kubernetes Pods running on EKS Hybrid Nodes. You can now eliminate the need to make on-premises pod networks routable or coordinate network infrastructure changes, greatly simplifying hybrid Kubernetes environments. The gateway automatically enables pod-to-pod traffic across cloud and on-premises environments, control plane-to-webhook communication, and connectivity for AWS services like Application Load Balancers, and is available at no additional charge.

Amazon Aurora Serverless: Up to 30% better performance, smarter scaling, and still scales to zero — Amazon Aurora Serverless just got faster and smarter, with up to 30% better performance than the previous version and an enhanced scaling algorithm designed to handle workloads where multiple tasks compete for resources — like busy APIs and agentic AI applications with bursts of activity and long idle windows. You can now run even more demanding workloads serverlessly, paying only for what you use, and automatically scaling to zero when not in use. All improvements are available in platform version 4 at no additional cost.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore adds new features to help developers build agents faster — Amazon Bedrock AgentCore introduces a managed harness (preview), the AgentCore CLI, and AgentCore skills for coding assistants, helping developers go from idea to working agent prototype faster. The managed harness lets you define an agent by specifying a model, system prompt, and tools and run it immediately with no orchestration code required — and when you’re ready for full control, you can export the harness orchestration as Strands-based code. The AgentCore CLI deploys your agents with the governance and auditability of infrastructure-as-code (AWS CDK today, Terraform coming soon), and is available in 14 AWS Regions at no additional charge.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Here are some additional posts and resources that you might find interesting:

Introducing granular cost attribution for Amazon Bedrock — This post walks through how Amazon Bedrock’s granular cost attribution works and covers practical example cost tracking scenarios. You can now tag and track Bedrock usage costs at a finer level of detail — useful for organizations running multiple teams or projects on Bedrock who need precise cost visibility and chargeback capabilities.

Automating Incident Investigation with AWS DevOps Agent and Salesforce MCP Server — This post (co-written with Salesforce) shows how AWS DevOps Agent, integrated with the Salesforce MCP Server, automates the full lifecycle of infrastructure incident investigation — from identifying issues and diagnosing root causes to notifying customers through Salesforce Service Cloud. It’s a compelling real-world example of how AI agents and MCP-based tool connectivity are reshaping DevOps workflows in production, dramatically reducing mean time to resolution.

Microcredentials from AWS are now free — Here’s why that matters — You can now access AWS microcredentials at no cost through AWS Skill Builder in all countries where the platform is offered. Unlike traditional multiple-choice certifications, microcredentials are hands-on assessments that place builders in simulated business scenarios where they configure, troubleshoot, and optimize directly in a live AWS environment — the same way they would on the job. A great opportunity to validate real cloud skills without a cost barrier.

Amazon SageMaker AI now supports optimized generative AI inference recommendations — You can now use Amazon SageMaker AI to automatically identify optimized deployment configurations for your generative AI models, including instance type, container, and inference parameters. This new capability takes the guesswork out of tuning inference infrastructure, helping you reduce costs and improve latency for your AI applications in production.

Today, we’re announcing AWS Elemental Inference, a fully managed AI service that automatically transforms and maximizes live and on-demand video broadcasts to engage audiences at scale. At launch, you’ll be able to use AWS Elemental Inference to adapt video content into vertical formats optimized for mobile and social platforms in real time.

With AWS Elemental Inference, broadcasters and streamers can reach audiences on social and mobile platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts without manual postproduction work or AI expertise.

Today’s viewers consume content differently than they did even a few years ago. However, most broadcasts are produced in landscape format for traditional viewing. Converting these broadcasts into vertical formats for mobile platforms typically requires time-consuming manual editing that causes broadcasters and streamers to miss viral moments and lose audiences to mobile-first destinations.

Let’s try it out

AWS Elemental Inference offers flexible deployment options to fit your existing workflow. You can choose to create a feed through the standalone console or configure AWS Elemental Inference through the AWS Elemental MediaLive console.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

To get started with AWS Elemental Inference, navigate to the AWS Management Console and choose AWS Elemental Inference. From the dashboard, choose Create feed to establish your top-level resource for AI-powered video processing. A feed contains your feature configurations and begins in CREATING state before transitioning to AVAILABLE when ready.

After creating your feed, you can configure outputs for either vertical video cropping or clip generation. For cropping, you can start with an empty feed. The service automatically manages cropping parameters based on your video specifications. For clip generation, choose Add output, provide a name (such as “highlight-clips”), select Clipping as the output type, and set the status to ENABLED.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

This standalone interface provides a streamlined experience for configuring and managing your AI-powered video transformations, making it straightforward to get started with vertical video creation and clip generation.

Alternatively, you can enable AWS Elemental Inference directly within your AWS Elemental MediaLive channel configuration. You can use this integrated approach to add AI capabilities to your existing live video workflows without modifying your architecture. Enable the features you need as part of your channel setup, and AWS Elemental Inference will work in parallel with your video encoding.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

After it’s enabled, you can configure Smart Crop with outputs for different resolution specifications within an Output group.

AWS Elemental MediaLive now includes a dedicated AWS Elemental Inference tab on the channel details page, providing a centralized view of your AI-powered video transformation configuration. The tab displays the service Amazon Resource Name (ARN), data endpoints, and feed output details, including which features, such as Smart Crop, are enabled and their current operational status.

How AWS Elemental Inference works

The service uses an agentic AI application that analyses video in real time and automatically applies the right optimizations at the right moments. Detection of vertical video cropping and clip generation happens independently, executing multistep transformations that require no human intervention to extract value.

AWS Elemental Inference analyzes video and automatically applies AI capabilities with no human-in-the-loop prompting required. While you focus on quality video production, the service autonomously optimizes content to create personalized content experiences for your audience.

AWS Elemental Inference applies AI capabilities in parallel with live video, achieving 6–10 second latency compared to minutes for traditional postprocessing approaches. This “process once, optimize everywhere” method runs multiple AI features simultaneously on the same video stream, eliminating the need to reprocess content for each capability.

The service integrates seamlessly with AWS Elemental MediaLive, so you can enable AI features without modifying your existing video architecture. AWS Elemental Inference uses fully managed foundation models (FMs) that are automatically updated and optimized, so you don’t need dedicated AI teams or specialized expertise.

Key features at launch

Enjoy the following key features when AWS Elemental Inference launches:

Vertical video creation – AI-powered cropping intelligently transforms landscape broadcasts into vertical formats (9:16 aspect ratio) optimized for social and mobile platforms. The service tracks subjects and keeps key action visible, maintaining broadcast quality while automatically reformatting content for mobile viewing.

Clip generation with advanced metadata analysis – Automatically detects and extracts clips from live content, highlighting moments for real-time distribution. For live broadcasts, this means identifying game-winning plays in soccer and basketball—reducing manual editing from hours to minutes.

Keep an eye on this space as more features and capabilities will be introduced throughout this year, including tighter integration with core AWS Elemental services and features to help customers monetize their video content.

Now available

AWS Elemental Inference is available today in 4 AWS Regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Mumbai). You can enable AWS Elemental Inference through the AWS Elemental MediaLive console or integrate it into your workflows using the AWS Elemental MediaLive APIs.

With consumption-based pricing, you pay only for the features you use and the video you process, with no upfront costs or commitments. This means you can scale during peak events and optimize costs during quieter periods.

Last week, my team met many developers at Developer Week in San Jose. My colleague, Vinicius Senger delivered a great keynote about renascent software—a new way of building and evolving applications where humans and AI collaborate as co-developers using Kiro. Other colleagues spoke about building and deploying production-ready AI agents. Everyone stayed to ask and hear the questions related to agent memory, multi-agent patterns, meta-tooling and hooks. It was interesting how many developers were actually building agents.

We are continuing to meet developers and hear their feedback at third-party developer conferences.
Here are the notable launches and updates from last week that can help you build, scale, and innovate on AWS.

Last week’s launches

Here are the launches that got my attention this week.

Let’s start with news related to compute and networking infrastructure:

Introducing Amazon EC2 C8id, M8id, and R8id instances: These new Amazon EC2 C8id, M8id, and R8id instances are powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors. These instances offer up to 43% higher performance and 3.3x more memory bandwidth compared to previous generation instances.

AWS Network Firewall announces new price reductions: The service has added the hourly and data processing discounts on NAT Gateways that are service-chained with Network Firewall secondary endpoints. Additionally, AWS Network Firewall has removed additional data processing charges for Advanced Inspection, which enables Transport Layer Security (TLS) inspection of encrypted network traffic.

Amazon ECS adds Network Load Balancer support for Linear and Canary deployments: Applications that commonly use NLB, such as those requiring TCP/UDP-based connections, low latency, long-lived connections, or static IP addresses, can take advantage of managed, incremental traffic shifting natively from ECS when rolling out updates.

AWS Config now supports 30 new resource types: These range across key services including Amazon EKS, Amazon Q, and AWS IoT. This expansion provides greater coverage over your AWS environment, enabling you to more effectively discover, assess, audit, and remediate an even broader range of resources.

Amazon DynamoDB global tables now support replication across multiple AWS accounts: DynamoDB global tables are a fully managed, serverless, multi-Region, and multi-active database. With this new capability, you can replicate tables across AWS accounts and Regions to improve resiliency, isolate workloads at the account level, and apply distinct security and governance controls.

Amazon RDS now provides an enhanced console experience to connect to a database: The new console experience provides ready-made code snippets for Java, Python, Node.js, and other programming languages as well as tools like the
psql
command line utility. These code snippets are automatically adjusted based on your database’s authentication settings. For example, if your cluster uses IAM authentication, the generated code snippets will use token-based authentication to connect to the database. The console experience also includes integrated CloudShell access, offering the ability to connect to your databases directly from within the RDS console.

Then, I noticed three news items related to security and how you authenticate on AWS:

AWS Builder ID now supports Sign in with Apple: AWS Builder ID, your profile for accessing AWS applications including AWS Builder Center, AWS Training and Certification, AWS re:Post, AWS Startups, and Kiro, now supports sign-in with Apple as a social login provider. This expansion of sign-in options builds on the existing sign-in with Google capability, providing Apple users with a streamlined way to access AWS resources without managing separate credentials on AWS.

AWS STS now supports validation of select identity provider specific claims from Google, GitHub, CircleCI and OCI: You can reference these custom claims as condition keys in IAM role trust policies and resource control policies, expanding your ability to implement fine-grained access control for federated identities and help you establish your data perimeters. This enhancement builds upon IAM’s existing OIDC federation capabilities, which allow you to grant temporary AWS credentials to users authenticated through external OIDC-compatible identity providers.

AWS Management Console now displays Account Name on the Navigation bar for easier account identification: You now have an easy way to identify your accounts at a glance. You can now quickly distinguish between accounts visually using the account name that appears in the navigation bar for all authorized users in that account.

Amazon CloudFront announces mutual TLS support for origins: Now with origin mTLS support, you can implement a standardized, certificate-based authentication approach that eliminates operational burden. This enables organizations to enforce strict authentication for their proprietary content, ensuring that only verified CloudFront distributions can establish connections to backend infrastructure ranging from AWS origins and on-premises servers to third-party cloud providers and external CDNs.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Finally, there is not a single week without news around AI :

Claude Opus 4.6 now available in Amazon Bedrock: Opus 4.6 is Anthropic’s most intelligent model to date and a premier model for coding, enterprise agents, and professional work. Claude Opus 4.6 brings advanced capabilities to Amazon Bedrock customers, including industry-leading performance for agentic tasks, complex coding projects, and enterprise-grade workflows that require deep reasoning and reliability.

Structured outputs now available in Amazon Bedrock: Amazon Bedrock now supports structured outputs, a capability that provides consistent, machine-readable responses from foundation models that adhere to your defined JSON schemas. Instead of prompting for valid JSON and adding extra checks in your application, you can specify the format you want and receive responses that match it—making production workflows more predictable and resilient.

Upcoming AWS events

Check your calendars so that you can sign up for this upcoming event:

AWS Community Day Romania (April 23–24, 2026): This community-led AWS event brings together developers, architects, entrepreneurs, and students for more than 10 professional sessions delivered by AWS Heroes, Solutions Architects, and industry experts. Attendees can expect expert-led technical talks, insights from speakers with global conference experience, and opportunities to connect during dedicated networking breaks, all hosted at a premium venue designed to support collaboration and community engagement.

If you’re looking for more ways to stay connected beyond this event, join the AWS Builder Center to learn, build, and connect with builders in the AWS community.

Organizations face a challenging trade-off when adapting AI models to their specific business needs: settle for generic models that produce average results, or tackle the complexity and expense of advanced model customization. Traditional approaches force a choice between poor performance with smaller models or the high costs of deploying larger model variants and managing complex infrastructure. Reinforcement fine-tuning is an advanced technique that trains models using feedback instead of massive labeled datasets, but implementing it typically requires specialized ML expertise, complicated infrastructure, and significant investment—with no guarantee of achieving the accuracy needed for specific use cases.

Today, we’re announcing reinforcement fine-tuning in Amazon Bedrock, a new model customization capability that creates smarter, more cost-effective models that learn from feedback and deliver higher-quality outputs for specific business needs. Reinforcement fine-tuning uses a feedback-driven approach where models improve iteratively based on reward signals, delivering 66% accuracy gains on average over base models.

Amazon Bedrock automates the reinforcement fine-tuning workflow, making this advanced model customization technique accessible to everyday developers without requiring deep machine learning (ML) expertise or large labeled datasets.

How reinforcement fine-tuning works

Reinforcement fine-tuning is built on top of reinforcement learning principles to address a common challenge: getting models to consistently produce outputs that align with business requirements and user preferences.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

While traditional fine-tuning requires large, labeled datasets and expensive human annotation, reinforcement fine-tuning takes a different approach. Instead of learning from fixed examples, it uses reward functions to evaluate and judge which responses are considered good for particular business use cases. This teaches models to understand what makes a quality response without requiring massive amounts of pre-labeled training data, making advanced model customization in Amazon Bedrock more accessible and cost-effective.

Here are the benefits of using reinforcement fine-tuning in Amazon Bedrock:

Ease of use – Amazon Bedrock automates much of the complexity, making reinforcement fine-tuning more accessible to developers building AI applications. Models can be trained using existing API logs in Amazon Bedrock or by uploading datasets as training data, eliminating the need for labeled datasets or infrastructure setup.

Better model performance – Reinforcement fine-tuning improves model accuracy by 66% on average over base models, enabling optimization for price and performance by training smaller, faster, and more efficient model variants. This works with Amazon Nova 2 Lite model, improving quality and price performance for specific business needs, with support for additional models coming soon.

Security – Data remains within the secure AWS environment throughout the entire customization process, mitigating security and compliance concerns.

The capability supports two complementary approaches to provide flexibility for optimizing models:

Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) uses rule-based graders for objective tasks like code generation or math reasoning.

Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback (RLAIF) employs AI-based judges for subjective tasks like instruction following or content moderation.

Getting started with reinforcement fine-tuning in Amazon Bedrock

Let’s walk through creating a reinforcement fine-tuning job.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

First, I access the Amazon Bedrock console. Then, I navigate to the Custom models page. I choose Create and then choose Reinforcement fine-tuning job.

I start by entering the name of this customization job and then select my base model. At launch, reinforcement fine-tuning supports Amazon Nova 2 Lite, with support for additional models coming soon.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Next, I need to provide training data. I can use my stored invocation logs directly, eliminating the need to upload separate datasets. I can also upload new JSONL files or select existing datasets from Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). Reinforcement fine-tuning automatically validates my training dataset and supports the OpenAI Chat Completions data format. If I provide invocation logs in the Amazon Bedrock invoke or converse format, Amazon Bedrock automatically converts them to the Chat Completions format.

The reward function setup is where I define what constitutes a good response. I have two options here. For objective tasks, I can select Custom code and write custom Python code that gets executed through AWS Lambda functions. For more subjective evaluations, I can select Model as judge to use foundation models (FMs) as judges by providing evaluation instructions.

Here, I select Custom code, and I create a new Lambda function or use an existing one as a reward function. I can start with one of the provided templates and customize it for my specific needs.

I can optionally modify default hyperparameters like learning rate, batch size, and epochs.

For enhanced security, I can configure virtual private cloud (VPC) settings and AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) encryption to meet my organization’s compliance requirements. Then, I choose Create to start the model customization job.

During the training process, I can monitor real-time metrics to understand how the model is learning. The training metrics dashboard shows key performance indicators including reward scores, loss curves, and accuracy improvements over time. These metrics help me understand whether the model is converging properly and if the reward function is effectively guiding the learning process.

When the reinforcement fine-tuning job is completed, I can see the final job status on the Model details page.

Once the job is completed, I can deploy the model with a single click. I select Set up inference, then choose Deploy for on-demand.

Here, I provide a few details for my model.

After deployment, I can quickly evaluate the model’s performance using the Amazon Bedrock playground. This helps me to test the fine-tuned model with sample prompts and compare its responses against the base model to validate the improvements. I select Test in playground.

The playground provides an intuitive interface for rapid testing and iteration, helping me confirm that the model meets my quality requirements before integrating it into production applications.

Today, we’re announcing two new AI model training features within Amazon SageMaker HyperPod: checkpointless training, an approach that mitigates the need for traditional checkpoint-based recovery by enabling peer-to-peer state recovery, and elastic training, enabling AI workloads to automatically scale based on resource availability.

Checkpointless training – Checkpointless training eliminates disruptive checkpoint-restart cycles, maintaining forward training momentum despite failures, reducing recovery time from hours to minutes. Accelerate your AI model development, reclaim days from development timelines, and confidently scale training workflows to thousands of AI accelerators.

Elastic training – Elastic training maximizes cluster utilization as training workloads automatically expand to use idle capacity as it becomes available, and contract to yield resources as higher-priority workloads like inference volumes peak. Save hours of engineering time per week spent reconfiguring training jobs based on compute availability.

Rather than spending time managing training infrastructure, these new training techniques mean that your team can concentrate entirely on enhancing model performance, ultimately getting your AI models to market faster. By eliminating the traditional checkpoint dependencies and fully utilizing available capacity, you can significantly reduce model training completion times.

Checkpointless training: How it works

Traditional checkpoint-based recovery has these sequential job stages: 1) job termination and restart, 2) process discovery and network setup, 3) checkpoint retrieval, 4) data loader initialization, and 5) training loop resumption. When failures occur, each stage can become a bottleneck and training recovery can take up to an hour on self-managed training clusters. The entire cluster must wait for every single stage to complete before training can resume. This can lead to the entire training cluster sitting idle during recovery operations, which increases costs and extends the time to market.

Checkpointless training removes this bottleneck entirely by maintaining continuous model state preservation across the training cluster. When failures occur, the system instantly recovers by using healthy peers, avoiding the need for a checkpoint-based recovery that requires restarting the entire job. As a result, checkpointless training enables fault recovery in minutes.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Checkpointless training is designed for incremental adoption and built on four core components that work together: 1) collective communications initialization optimizations, 2) memory-mapped data loading that enables caching, 3) in-process recovery, and 4) checkpointless peer-to-peer state replication. These components are orchestrated through the HyperPod training operator that is used to launch the job. Each component optimizes a specific step in the recovery process, and together they enable automatic detection and recovery of infrastructure faults in minutes with zero manual intervention, even with thousands of AI accelerators. You can progressively enable each of these features as your training scales.

The latest Amazon Nova models were trained using this technology on tens of thousands of accelerators. Additionally, based on internal studies on cluster sizes ranging between 16 GPUs to over 2,000 GPUs, checkpointless training showcased significant improvements in recovery times, reducing downtime by over 80% compared to traditional checkpoint-based recovery.

To learn more, visit checkpointless training GitHub page for implementation and HyperPod Checkpointless Training in the Amazon SageMaker AI Developer Guide.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Elastic training: How it works

On clusters that run different types of modern AI workloads, accelerator availability can change continuously throughout the day as short-duration training runs complete, inference spikes occur and subside, or resources free up from completed experiments. Despite this dynamic availability of AI accelerators, traditional training workloads remain locked into their initial compute allocation, unable to take advantage of idle accelerators without manual intervention. This rigidity leaves valuable GPU capacity unused and prevents organizations from maximizing their infrastructure investment.

Elastic training transforms how training workloads interact with cluster resources. Training jobs can automatically scale up to utilize available accelerators and gracefully contract when resources are needed elsewhere, all while maintaining training quality.

Workload elasticity is enabled through the HyperPod training operator that orchestrates scaling decisions through integration with the Kubernetes control plane and resource scheduler. It continuously monitors cluster state through three primary channels: pod lifecycle events, node availability changes, and resource scheduler priority signals. This comprehensive monitoring enables near-instantaneous detection of scaling opportunities, whether from newly available resources or requests from higher-priority workloads.

The scaling mechanism relies on adding and removing data parallel replicas. When additional compute resources become available, new data parallel replicas join the training job, accelerating throughput. Conversely, during scale-down events (for example, when a higher-priority workload requests resources), the system scales down by removing replicas rather than terminating the entire job, allowing training to continue at reduced capacity.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Across different scales, the system preserves the global batch size and adapts learning rates, preventing model convergence from being adversely impacted. This enables workloads to dynamically scale up or down to utilize available AI accelerators without any manual intervention.

You can start elastic training through the HyperPod recipes for publicly available foundation models (FMs) including Llama and GPT-OSS. Additionally, you can modify your PyTorch training scripts to add elastic event handlers, which enable the job to dynamically scale.

To learn more, visit the HyperPod Elastic Training in the Amazon SageMaker AI Developer Guide. To get started, find the HyperPod recipes available in the AWS GitHub repository.

Now available

Both features are available in all the Regions in which Amazon SageMaker HyperPod is available. You can use these training techniques without additional cost. To learn more, visit the SageMaker HyperPod product page and SageMaker AI pricing page.

Give it a try and send feedback to AWS re:Post for SageMaker or through your usual AWS Support contacts.

Imagine building AI applications that deliver accurate, current information without the complexity of developing intricate data retrieval systems. Today, we’re excited to announce the general availability of Web Grounding, a new built-in tool for Nova models on Amazon Bedrock.

Web Grounding provides developers with a turnkey Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) option that allows the Amazon Nova foundation models to intelligently decide when to retrieve and incorporate relevant up-to-date information based on the context of the prompt. This helps to ground the model output by incorporating cited public sources as context, aiming to reduce hallucinations and improve accuracy.

When should developers use Web Grounding?

Developers should consider using Web Grounding when building applications that require access to current, factual information or need to provide well-cited responses. The capability is particularly valuable across a range of applications, from knowledge-based chat assistants providing up-to-date information about products and services, to content generation tools requiring fact-checking and source verification. It’s also ideal for research assistants that need to synthesize information from multiple current sources, as well as customer support applications where accuracy and verifiability are crucial.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Web Grounding is especially useful when you need to reduce hallucinations in your AI applications or when your use case requires transparent source attribution. Because it automatically handles the retrieval and integration of information, it’s an efficient solution for developers who want to focus on building their applications rather than managing complex RAG implementations.

Getting started
Web Grounding seamlessly integrates with supported Amazon Nova models to handle information retrieval and processing during inference. This eliminates the need to build and maintain complex RAG pipelines, while also providing source attributions that verify the origin of information.

Let’s see an example of asking a question to Nova Premier using Python to call the Amazon Bedrock Converse API with Web Grounding enabled.

First, I created an Amazon Bedrock client using AWS SDK for Python (Boto3) in the usual way. For good practice, I’m using a session, which helps to group configurations and make them reusable. I then create a BedrockRuntimeClient.

try:
    session = boto3.Session(region_name='us-east-1')
    client = session.client(
        'bedrock-runtime')

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

I then prepare the Amazon Bedrock Converse API payload. It includes a “role” parameter set to “user”, indicating that the message comes from our application’s user (compared to “assistant” for AI-generated responses).

For this demo, I chose the question “What are the current AWS Regions and their locations?” This was selected intentionally because it requires current information, making it useful to demonstrate how Amazon Nova can automatically invoke searches using Web Grounding when it determines that up-to-date knowledge is needed.

# Prepare the conversation in the format expected by Bedrock
question = "What are the current AWS regions and their locations?"
conversation = [
   {
     "role": "user", # Indicates this message is from the user
     "content": [{"text": question}], # The actual question text
      }
    ]

First, let’s see what the output is without Web Grounding. I make a call to Amazon Bedrock Converse API.

# Make the API call to Bedrock
model_id = "us.amazon.nova-premier-v1:0"
response = client.converse(
    modelId=model_id, # Which AI model to use
    messages=conversation, # The conversation history (just our question in this case)
    )
print(response['output']['message']['content'][0]['text'])

I get a list of all the current AWS Regions and their locations.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Now let’s use Web Grounding. I make a similar call to the Amazon Bedrock Converse API, but declare
nova_grounding
as one of the tools available to the model.

model_id = "us.amazon.nova-premier-v1:0"
response = client.converse(
    modelId=model_id,
    messages=conversation,
    toolConfig= {
          "tools":[
              {
                "systemTool": {
                   "name": "nova_grounding" # Enables the model to search real-time information
                 }
              }
          ]
     }
)

After processing the response, I can see that the model used Web Grounding to access up-to-date information. The output includes reasoning traces that I can use to follow its thought process and see where it automatically queried external sources. The content of the responses from these external calls appear as
[HIDDEN]
– a standard practice in AI systems that both protects sensitive information and helps manage output size.

Additionally, the output also includes
citationsContent
objects containing information about the sources queried by Web Grounding.

Finally, I can see the list of AWS Regions. It finishes with a message right at the end stating that “These are the most current and active AWS regions globally.”

Web Grounding represents a significant step forward in making AI applications more reliable and current with minimum effort.
