During my time at AWS, I have always looked for opportunities to work with students. I have delivered over 50 talks at universities across the region, and watching the potential in the room is always a strong motivator. It reminds me of why I do this work, and that the students I meet today may well become our customers and collaborators tomorrow. That is why I am happy to open this week with Student Rewards on AWS Builder Center.

Rick Suttles published Introducing Student Rewards on AWS Builder Center, a new benefit for verified higher education students. When you verify your enrollment through SheerID and complete your Builder Center profile, you unlock 12 months of premium AWS Skill Builder access (900+ courses, hands-on labs, certification exam prep, and game-based learning). From there, you earn badges through actions on Builder Center: publishing articles, commenting, and maintaining engagement. At 7 badges, you unlock $10 in AWS Credits. At 14 badges, another $20 in credits. At 21 badges, you earn an AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher ($100 value).

This represents a commitment of over $500 million in resources during this back-to-school season, providing students with the training, tools, and certification needed to start building their careers in cloud and AI. Student Rewards is available to students 18 years or older and enrolled at accredited higher education institutions worldwide, subject to verification and applicable terms.

Last week’s launches
Here’s what else happened this week.

A new AWS Local Zone in Las Vegas, Nevada – This new Local Zone supports Amazon EC2 C7i, M7i, R7i, and C8gn instances, Amazon EBS, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, Application Load Balancer, and AWS Direct Connect. AWS Local Zones are now available in more than 30 metropolitan areas worldwide. In addition, AWS added a fourth Availability Zone to the Europe (London) Region, delivering next-generation AI and ML capacity with Trn3 and P6 accelerated instances alongside general-purpose compute.

Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling now supports batch instance termination – You can now pass up to 100 instance IDs to the
TerminateInstanceInAutoScalingGroup
API to terminate them as a batch, reducing the number of API calls needed to scale down your Auto Scaling groups. Batch termination is designed for workloads that need to rapidly scale down, such as AI/ML training jobs, container orchestrators, or event-driven architectures that spin up large fleets temporarily.

AWS CloudShell now includes a built-in visual file editor – CloudShell now includes a visual file editor that you can launch directly from your shell session using a single edit command. The editor supports syntax highlighting, find-and-replace, multi-line selection, copy-paste, and undo-redo in a single browser session. Whether you are updating a deployment script, modifying an agent steering file, editing a CloudFormation template, or fixing a Lambda function, the editor provides a seamless edit-and-run experience without leaving CloudShell.

Amazon Bedrock now supports SpaceXAI Grok 4.6 with cross-Region inference – Grok 4.6, a frontier model built for coding, agentic tasks, and knowledge work, is now available on Amazon Bedrock. The model runs on the bedrock-runtime endpoint with support for the Responses, Chat Completions, and Converse APIs, and works with existing account-level controls including model invocation logging, Amazon CloudWatch metrics, and cost itemization in AWS Cost Explorer.

Amazon Bedrock expands API support and introduces cross-Region inference for OpenAI models – Amazon Bedrock now supports OpenAI GPT-5.6 models (Sol, Terra, and Luna) with the Responses, Converse, and Chat Completions APIs, and adds cross-Region inference. Geo cross-Region inference routes requests within a predefined geography (including new US Geo support with this launch), while Global cross-Region inference serves requests from any commercial AWS Region at a lower per-token cost.

AgentCore payments is now generally available in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore – At general availability, AgentCore payments includes Quick Create for Coinbase credential provisioning directly within the AgentCore console, a curated Coinbase Bazar MCP server of pay-per-use x402 endpoints via AgentCore gateway, support for the Machine Payment Protocol (MPP), and the “upto” scheme in the x402 protocol for pay-per-inference and dynamic pricing use cases. To learn more, visit the AI Blog post.

AWS Glue 6.0 delivers 30% price reduction and Iceberg v3 support – AWS Glue 6.0 is built on a fully modernized runtime, Apache Spark 4.1, Python 3.13, and Scala 2.13, delivering 30% lower pricing than previous AWS Glue versions. With Iceberg v3, Glue 6.0 adds the VARIANT data type with automatic shredding for faster reads on semi-structured data, deletion vectors for high-performance row-level updates, geometry and geography data types for spatial processing, and flexible schema evolution.

For a full list of AWS announcements, be sure to keep an eye on the What’s New with AWS page.

Other AWS news
Here are some additional posts you may find useful:

Updates to your AWS Sign-In experience – AWS is gradually introducing updates to the sign-in and sign-up experience. The redesigned sign-in page introduces a unified email entry point for root users and customers using the new email-based sign-in method, while IAM users continue signing in with their account ID, username, and password. The page also includes sign-in options for customers whose AWS account was created using a supported identity provider (Google, GitHub, Apple, or Amazon.com). A redesigned session selection page simplifies viewing and managing multiple active account and role sessions. If your organization relies on browser automation or scripted workflows that interact with the sign-in page, review the post to understand how these changes might affect your configuration.

In the works: AWS Builder Lofts in Berlin, Hyderabad, and São Paulo – My colleague Channy announced plans to open new Builder Lofts in three cities. Since the first Builder Loft opened in San Francisco in July 2025, it has welcomed more than 22,500 developers through its doors. Each new location will be a permanent community space offering free workshops, networking events, pitch nights, content creation spaces, and co-working areas. Berlin will focus on digital sovereignty and security-readiness, Hyderabad on AI and cloud-native architecture, and São Paulo on supporting Latin America’s developer ecosystem.

AWS and Amazon WorkSpaces recognized as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Desktop as a Service – AWS has been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Desktop as a Service (DaaS) for the third consecutive year, evaluated on Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute. Gartner noted strengths in operations, geographic strategy, and overall viability. This is also the first year the evaluation includes Amazon WorkSpaces for AI agents, a capability that runs AI agents within the same desktop environment, security perimeter, and audit trail as human users.

We commuted together into the New York City office, his first real rush hour train ride, and spent the day exploring how Amazon uses AI, machine learning, and robotics to deliver packages to customers all over the world. Watching his eyes light up as he saw robots navigating a fulfillment center reminded me why so many of us got into technology in the first place. There’s nothing quite like seeing that sense of wonder when something complex clicks.

That same energy carried into the week’s launches. We’ve got updates across AI pricing, observability, multicloud networking, and data management. Let’s dive in.

Headlines

Amazon Bedrock announces up to 80% lower prices for OpenAI GPT‑5.6 models – If you’re using OpenAI’s GPT‑5.6 family through Amazon Bedrock, your costs just dropped significantly. Effective July 30, on-demand inference prices for GPT‑5.6 Luna are reduced by 80%, while GPT‑5.6 Terra prices are reduced by 20%. Luna now costs $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, making it one of the most affordable frontier-class models available. These price reductions apply automatically — no action required on your part. Read more

Last week’s launches

Here are some launches and updates from this past week that caught my attention:

Amazon CloudWatch announces managed Prometheus collectors – Amazon CloudWatch now supports collecting Prometheus metrics from your AWS infrastructure using fully managed collectors, enabling you to monitor Amazon EKS, Amazon EC2, Amazon ECS, Amazon MSK, and Amazon OpenSearch Service workloads without deploying or managing any agents. If you’ve been maintaining your own Prometheus scraping infrastructure, this removes a significant operational burden. Read more

AWS Interconnect — multicloud connectivity with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is now generally available – AWS Interconnect is the first purpose-built multicloud connectivity product of its kind, allowing you to quickly provision resilient, scalable private connections between AWS and other cloud providers. With this GA launch for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), you can establish private cross-cloud networking without traversing the public internet, making it easier to run multicloud architectures with the security and performance your workloads demand. Read more

AWS IAM Identity Center extends multi-Region support to Identity Center directory – You can now replicate IAM Identity Center from your primary AWS Region to additional Regions when using the Identity Center directory as your identity source. If IAM Identity Center is affected by a disruption in the primary Region, your users continue to have access to their AWS accounts using provisioned entitlements in additional Regions. This feature was previously available only for instances connected to external identity providers. Read more

Amazon S3 Tables now supports the Variant data type for Apache Iceberg V3 – Amazon S3 Tables adds support for the Variant data type, introduced in the Apache Iceberg V3 table format specification. Variant provides a high-performance, native solution for managing semi-structured data within your data lake — think IoT sensor data, application logs, and other schema-flexible payloads — without resorting to JSON blobs.
Twenty years ago today, on March 14, 2006, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) quietly launched with a modest one-paragraph announcement on the What’s New page:

Amazon S3 is storage for the Internet. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers. Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites.

Even Jeff Barr’s blog post was only a few paragraphs, written before catching a plane to a developer event in California. No code examples. No demo. Very low fanfare. Nobody knew at the time that this launch would shape our entire industry.

The early days: Building blocks that just work

At its core, S3 introduced two straightforward primitives: PUT to store an object and GET to retrieve it later. But the real innovation was the philosophy behind it: create building blocks that handle the undifferentiated heavy lifting, which freed developers to focus on higher-level work.

From day one, S3 was guided by five fundamentals that remain unchanged today.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Security means your data is protected by default. Durability is designed for 11 nines (99.999999999%), and we operate S3 to be lossless. Availability is designed into every layer, with the assumption that failure is always present and must be handled. Performance is optimized to store virtually any amount of data without degradation. Elasticity means the system automatically grows and shrinks as you add and remove data, with no manual intervention required.

When we get these things right, the service becomes so straightforward that most of you never have to think about how complex these concepts are.

S3 today: Scale beyond imagination

Throughout 20 years, S3 has remained committed to its core fundamentals even as it’s grown to a scale that’s hard to comprehend.

When S3 first launched, it offered approximately one petabyte of total storage capacity across about 400 storage nodes in 15 racks spanning three data centers, with 15 Gbps of total bandwidth. We designed the system to store tens of billions of objects, with a maximum object size of 5 GB. The initial price was 15 cents per gigabyte.

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Today, S3 stores more than 500 trillion objects and serves more than 200 million requests per second globally across hundreds of exabytes of data in 123 Availability Zones in 39 AWS Regions, for millions of customers. The maximum object size has grown from 5 GB to 50 TB, a 10,000 fold increase. If you stacked all of the tens of millions S3 hard drives on top of each other, they would reach the International Space Station and almost back.

Even as S3 has grown to support this incredible scale, the price you pay has dropped. Today, AWS charges slightly over 2 cents per gigabyte. That’s a price reduction of approximately 85% since launch in 2006. In parallel, we’ve continued to introduce ways to further optimize storage spend with storage tiers. For example, our customers have collectively saved more than $6 billion in storage costs by using Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering as compared to Amazon S3 Standard.

Over the past two decades, the S3 API has been adopted and used as a reference point across the storage industry. Multiple vendors now offer S3 compatible storage tools and systems, implementing the same API patterns and conventions. This means skills and tools developed for S3 often transfer to other storage systems, making the broader storage landscape more accessible.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

Despite all of this growth and industry adoption, perhaps the most remarkable achievement is this: the code you wrote for S3 in 2006 still works today, unchanged. Your data went through 20 years of innovation and technical advances. We migrated the infrastructure through multiple generations of disks and storage systems. All the code to handle a request has been rewritten. But the data you stored 20 years ago is still available today, and we’ve maintained complete API backward compatibility. That’s our commitment to delivering a service that continually “just works.”

The engineering behind the scale

What makes S3 possible at this scale? Continuous innovation in engineering.

Much of what follows is drawn from a conversation between Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec, VP of Data and Analytics at AWS, and Gergely Orosz of The Pragmatic Engineer. The in-depth interview goes further into the technical details for those who want to go deeper. In the following paragraphs, I share some examples:

At the heart of S3 durability is a system of microservices that continuously inspect every single byte across the entire fleet. These auditor services examine data and automatically trigger repair systems the moment they detect signs of degradation. S3 is designed to be lossless: the 11 nines design goal reflects how the replication factor and re-replication fleet are sized, but the system is built so that objects aren’t lost.

S3 engineers use formal methods and automated reasoning in production to mathematically prove correctness. When engineers check in code to the index subsystem, automated proofs verify that consistency hasn’t regressed. This same approach proves correctness in cross-Region replication or for access policies.

Over the past 8 years, AWS has been progressively rewriting performance-critical code in the S3 request path in Rust. Blob movement and disk storage have been rewritten, and work is actively ongoing across other components. Beyond raw performance, Rust’s type system and memory safety guarantees eliminate entire classes of bugs at compile time. This is an essential property when operating at S3 scale and correctness requirements.

S3 is built on a design philosophy: “Scale is to your advantage.” Engineers design systems so that increased scale improves attributes for all users. The larger S3 gets, the more de-correlated workloads become, which improves reliability for everyone.

Looking forward

The vision for S3 extends beyond being a storage service to becoming the universal foundation for all data and AI workloads. Our vision is simple: you store any type of data one time in S3, and you work with it directly, without moving data between specialized systems. This approach reduces costs, eliminates complexity, and removes the need for multiple copies of the same data.

Here are a few standout launches from recent years:

S3 Tables – Fully managed Apache Iceberg tables with automated maintenance that optimize query efficiency and reduce storage cost over time.

S3 Vectors – Native vector storage for semantic search and RAG, supporting up to 2 billion vectors per index with sub-100ms query latency. In only 5 months (July–December 2025), you created more than 250,000 indices, ingested more than 40 billion vectors, and performed more than 1 billion queries.

S3 Metadata – Centralized metadata for instant data discovery, removing the need to recursively list large buckets for cataloging and significantly reducing time-to-insight for large data lakes.

Each of these capabilities operates at S3 cost structure. You can handle multiple data types that traditionally required expensive databases or specialized systems but are now economically feasible at scale.

From 1 petabyte to hundreds of exabytes. From 15 cents to 2 cents per gigabyte. From simple object storage to the foundation for AI and analytics. Through it all, our five fundamentals–security, durability, availability, performance, and elasticity–remain unchanged, and your code from 2006 still works today.

Here’s to the next 20 years of innovation on Amazon S3.

Today, we’re announcing general availability of the new eighth generation, memory optimized Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) R8i and R8i-flex instances powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors, available only on AWS. They deliver the highest performance and fastest memory bandwidth among comparable Intel processors in the cloud. These instances deliver up to 15 percent better price performance, 20 percent higher performance, and 2.5 times more memory throughput compared to previous generation instances.

With these improvements, R8i and R8i-flex instances are ideal for a variety of memory intensive workloads such as SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches (Memcached and Redis), in-memory databases such as SAP HANA, and real-time big data analytics (Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark clusters). For a majority of the workloads that don’t fully utilize the compute resources, the R8i-flex instances are a great first choice to achieve an additional 5 percent better price performance and 5 percent lower prices.

Improvements made to both instances compared to their predecessors
In terms of performance, R8i and R8i-flex instances offer 20 percent better performance than R7i instances, with even higher gains for specific workloads. These instances are up to 30 percent faster for PostgreSQL databases, up to 60 percent faster for NGINX web applications, and up to 40 percent faster for AI deep learning recommendation models compared to previous generation R7i instances, with sustained all-core turbo frequency now reaching 3.9 GHz (compared to 3.2 GHz in the previous generation). They also feature a 4.6x larger L3 cache and significantly better memory throughput, offering 2.5 times higher memory bandwidth than the seventh generation. With this higher performance across all the vectors, you can run a greater number of workloads while keeping costs down.

R8i instances now scale up to 96xlarge with up to 384 vCPUs and 3TB memory (versus 48xlarge sizes in the seventh generation), helping you to scale up database applications. R8i instances are SAP certified to deliver 142,100 aSAPS, which is highest among all comparable machines in on premises and cloud environments, delivering exceptional performance for your mission-critical SAP workloads. R8i-flex instances offer the most common sizes, from large to 16xlarge, and are a great first choice for applications that don’t fully utilize all compute resources. Both R8i and R8i-flex instances use the latest sixth generation AWS Nitro Cards, delivering up to two times more network and Amazon Elastic Block Storage (Amazon EBS) bandwidth compared to the previous generation, which greatly improves network throughput for workloads handling small packets, such as web, application, and gaming servers.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

R8i and R8i-flex instances also support bandwidth configuration with 25 percent allocation adjustments between network and Amazon EBS bandwidth, enabling better database performance, query processing, and logging speeds. Additional enhancements include FP16 datatype support for Intel AMX to support workloads such as deep learning training and inference and other artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) applications.

Customers across industries are harnessing the power of generative AI on AWS to boost employee productivity, deliver exceptional customer experiences, and streamline business processes. However, the growth in demand for GPU capacity has outpaced industry-wide supply, making GPUs a scarce resource and increasing the cost of securing them.

As Amazon Web Services (AWS) grows, we work hard to lower our costs so that we can pass those savings back to our customers. Regular price reductions on AWS services have been a standard way for AWS to pass on the economic efficiencies gained from our scale back to our customers.

Today, we’re announcing up to 45 percent price reduction for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) NVIDIA GPU-accelerated instances: P4 (P4d and P4de) and P5 (P5 and P5en) instance types. This price reduction to On-Demand and Savings Plan pricing applies to all Regions where these instances are available. The pricing reduction applies to On-Demand purchases beginning June 1 and to Savings Plan purchases effective after June 4.

Here is a table of price reductions percentage (%) from May 31, 2025 baseline prices by instance types and pricing plans:

We offers two types of Savings Plans:

EC2 Instance Savings Plans provide the lowest prices, offering savings in exchange for commitment to usage of individual instance families in a Region (for example, P5 usage in the US (N. Virginia) Region).

Compute Savings Plans provide the most flexibility and help to reduce your costs regardless of instance family, size, Availability Zones, and Regions (for example, from P4d to P5en instances, shift a workload between US Regions).

To provide increased accessibility to reduced pricing, we are making at-scale On-Demand capacity available for:

P4d instances in the Asia Pacific (Seoul), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Canada (Central), and Europe (London) Regions

P4de instances in the US East (N. Virginia) Region

P5 instances in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Jakarta), and South America (São Paulo) Regions

P5en instances in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Regions

We are also now delivering Amazon EC2 P6-B200 instances through Savings Plan to support large scale deployments, which became available on May 15, 2025 at launch only through EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML. EC2 P6-B200 instances, powered by NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, accelerate a broad range of GPU-enabled workloads but are especially well-suited for large-scale distributed AI training and inferencing.

These pricing updates reflect the AWS commitment to making advanced GPU computing more accessible while passing cost savings directly to customers.

At re:Invent 2023, we introduced Amazon S3 Express One Zone, a high-performance, single-Availability Zone (AZ) storage class purpose-built to deliver consistent single-digit millisecond data access for your most frequently accessed data and latency-sensitive applications.

S3 Express One Zone delivers data access speed up to 10 times faster than S3 Standard, and it can support up to 2 million
GET
transactions per second (TPS) and up to 200,000
PUT
TPS per directory bucket. This makes it ideal for performance-intensive workloads such as interactive data analytics, data streaming, media rendering and transcoding, high performance computing (HPC), and AI/ML trainings. Using S3 Express One Zone, customers like Fundrise, Aura, Lyrebird, Vivian Health, and Fetch improved the performance and reduced the costs of their data-intensive workloads.

Since launch, we’ve introduced a number of features for our customers using S3 Express One Zone. For example, S3 Express One Zone started to support object expiration using S3 Lifecycle to expire objects based on age to help you automatically optimize storage costs. In addition, your log-processing or media-broadcasting applications can directly append new data to the end of existing objects and then immediately read the object, all within S3 Express One Zone.

Today we’re announcing that, effective April 10, 2025, S3 Express One Zone has reduced storage prices by 31 percent,
PUT
request prices by 55 percent, and
GET
request prices by 85 percent. In addition, S3 Express One Zone has reduced the per-GB charges for data uploads and retrievals by 60 percent, and these charges now apply to all bytes transferred rather than just portions of requests greater than 512 KB.
