A month ago, I shared that Amazon Web Services (AWS) is recognized as a Leader in 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services (SCPS), with Gartner naming AWS a Leader for the fifteenth consecutive year.

In 2024, AWS was named as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants, Cloud-Native Application Platforms, Cloud Database Management Systems, Container Management, Data Integration Tools, Desktop as a Service (DaaS), and Data Science and Machine Learning Platforms as well as the SCPS. In 2025, we were also recognized as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS), Desktop as a Service and Data Science and Machine Learning (DSML) platforms. We strongly believe this means AWS provides the broadest and deepest range of services to customers.

Today, I’m happy to share recent Magic Quadrant reports that named AWS as a Leader in more cloud technology markets: Cloud-Native Application Platforms (aka Cloud Application Platforms) and Container Management.

2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud-Native Application Platforms
AWS has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud-Native Application Platforms for 2 consecutive years. AWS was positioned highest on “Ability to Execute”. Gartner defines cloud-native application platforms as those that provide managed application runtime environments for applications and integrated capabilities to manage the lifecycle of an application or application component in the cloud environment.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

The following image is the graphical representation of the 2025 Magic Quadrant for Cloud-Native Application Platforms.

AI has introduced huge efficiencies for web designers and is frequently being touted as the key to unlocking sustainable design and development. But do these gains outweigh the environmental cost of using energy-hungry AI tools?

Artificial intelligence is increasingly automating large parts of design and development workflows — tasks once reserved for skilled designers and developers. This streamlining can dramatically speed up project delivery. Even back in 2023, AI-assisted developers were found to complete tasks twice as fast as those without. And AI tools have advanced massively since then.

Yet this surge in capability raises a pressing dilemma:

Does the environmental toll of powering AI infrastructure eclipse the efficiency gains?

We can create websites faster that are optimized and more efficient to run, but the global consumption of energy by AI continues to climb.

Read moreRose gold design

As awareness grows around the digital sector’s hidden ecological footprint, web designers and businesses must grapple with this double-edged sword, weighing the grid-level impacts of AI against the cleaner, leaner code it can produce.

The Good: How AI Can Enhance Sustainability In Web Design

There’s no disputing that AI-driven automation has introduced higher speeds and efficiencies to many of the mundane aspects of web design. Tools that automatically generate responsive layouts, optimize image sizes, and refactor bloated scripts should free designers to focus on completing the creative side of design and development.

By some interpretations, these accelerated project timelines could represent a reduction in the required energy for development, and speedier production should mean less energy used.

Beyond automation, AI excels at identifying inefficiencies in code and design, as it can take a much more holistic view and assess things as a whole. Advanced algorithms can parse through stylesheets and JavaScript files to detect unused selectors or redundant logic, producing leaner, faster-loading pages. For example, AI-driven caching can increase cache hit rates by 15% by improving data availability and reducing latency. This means more user requests are served directly from the cache, reducing the need for data retrieval from the main server, which reduces energy expenditure.

Read morePassion & work

AI tools can utilize next-generation image formats like AVIF or WebP, as they’re basically designed to be understood by AI and automation, and selectively compress assets based on content sensitivity. This slashes media payloads without perceptible quality loss, as the AI can use Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that can learn compact representations of data.

AI’s impact also brings sustainability benefits via user experience (UX). AI-driven personalization engines can dynamically serve only the content a visitor needs, which eliminates superfluous scripts or images that they don’t care about. This not only enhances perceived performance but reduces the number of server requests and data transferred, cutting downstream energy use in network infrastructure.

With the right prompts, generative AI can be an accessibility tool and ensure sites meet inclusive design standards by checking against accessibility standards, reducing the need for redesigns that can be costly in terms of time, money, and energy.

So, if you can take things in isolation, AI can and already acts as an important tool to make web design more efficient and sustainable. But do these gains outweigh the cost of the resources required in building and maintaining these tools?

Read moreThe joy of art

Yet the carbon savings engineered at the page level must be balanced against the prodigious resource demands of AI infrastructure. Large-scale AI hinges on data centers that already account for roughly 2% of global electricity consumption, a figure projected to swell as AI workloads grow.

The International Energy Agency warns that electricity consumption from data centers could more than double by 2030 due to the increasing demand for AI tools, reaching nearly the current consumption of Japan. Training state-of-the-art language models generates carbon emissions on par with hundreds of transatlantic flights, and inference workloads, serving billions of requests daily, can rival or exceed training emissions over a model’s lifetime.

Image generation tasks represent an even steeper energy hill to climb. Producing a single AI-generated image can consume energy equivalent to charging a smartphone.

As generative design and AI-based prototyping become more common in web development, the cumulative energy footprint of these operations can quickly undermine the carbon savings achieved through optimized code.

Water consumption forms another hidden cost. Data centers rely heavily on evaporative cooling systems that can draw between one and five million gallons of water per day, depending on size and location, placing stress on local supplies, especially in drought-prone regions. Studies estimate a single ChatGPT query may consume up to half a liter of water when accounting for direct cooling requirements, with broader AI use potentially demanding billions of liters annually by 2027.

Resource depletion and electronic waste are further concerns. High-performance components underpinning AI services, like GPUs, can have very small lifespans due to both wear and tear and being superseded by more powerful hardware. AI alone could add between 1.2 and 5 million metric tons of e-waste by 2030, due to the continuous demand for new hardware, amplifying one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams.

Mining for the critical minerals in these devices often proceeds under unsustainable conditions due to a lack of regulations in many of the environments where rare metals can be sourced, and the resulting e-waste, rich in toxic metals like lead and mercury, poses another form of environmental damage if not properly recycled.

Compounding these physical impacts is a lack of transparency in corporate reporting. Energy and water consumption figures for AI workloads are often aggregated under general data center operations, which obscures the specific toll of AI training and inference among other operations.

And the energy consumption reporting of the data centres themselves has been found to have been obfuscated.

Reports estimate that the emissions of data centers are up to 662% higher than initially reported due to misaligned metrics, and ‘creative’ interpretations of what constitutes an emission. This makes it hard to grasp the true scale of AI’s environmental footprint, leaving designers and decision-makers unable to make informed, environmentally conscious decisions.

Do The Gains From AI Outweigh The Costs?

Some industry advocates argue that AI’s energy consumption isn’t as catastrophic as headlines suggest. Some groups have challenged ‘alarmist’ projections, claiming that AI’s current contribution of ‘just’ 0.02% of global energy consumption isn’t a cause for concern.

Proponents also highlight AI’s supposed environmental benefits. There are claims that AI could reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 0.1% to 1.1% through efficiency improvements. Google reported that five AI-powered solutions removed 26 million metric tons of emissions in 2024. The optimistic view holds that AI’s capacity to optimize everything from energy grids to transportation systems will more than compensate for its data center demands.

However, recent scientific analysis reveals these arguments underestimate AI’s true impact. MIT found that data centers already consume 4.4% of all US electricity, with projections showing AI alone could use as much power as 22% of US households by 2028. Research indicates AI-specific electricity use could triple from current levels annually by 2028. Moreover, Harvard research revealed that data centers use electricity with 48% higher carbon intensity than the US average.

Advice For Sustainable AI Use In Web Design

Despite the environmental costs, AI’s use in business, particularly web design, isn’t going away anytime soon, with 70% of large businesses looking to increase their AI investments to increase efficiencies. AI’s immense impact on productivity means those not using it are likely to be left behind. This means that environmentally conscious businesses and designers must find the right balance between AI’s environmental cost and the efficiency gains it brings.

Make Sure You Have A Strong Foundation Of Sustainable Web Design Principles

Before you plug in any AI magic, start by making sure the bones of your site are sustainable. Lean web fundamentals, like system fonts instead of hefty custom files, minimal JavaScript, and judicious image use, can slash a page’s carbon footprint by stripping out redundancies that increase energy consumption. For instance, the global average web page emits about 0.8g of CO₂ per view, whereas sustainably crafted sites can see a roughly 70% reduction.

Once that lean baseline is in place, AI-driven optimizations (image format selection, code pruning, responsive layout generation) aren’t adding to bloat but building on efficiency, ensuring every joule spent on AI actually yields downstream energy savings in delivery and user experience.

Choosing The Right Tools And Vendors

In order to make sustainable tool choices, transparency and awareness are the first steps. Many AI vendors have pledged to work towards sustainability, but independent audits are necessary, along with clear, cohesive metrics. Standardized reporting on energy and water footprints will help us understand the true cost of AI tools, allowing for informed choices.

You can look for providers that publish detailed environmental reports and hold third-party renewable energy certifications. Many major providers now offer PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) metrics alongside renewable energy matching to demonstrate real-world commitments to clean power.

When integrating AI into your build pipeline, choosing lightweight, specialized models for tasks like image compression or code linting can be more sustainable than full-scale generative engines. Task-specific tools often use considerably less energy than general AI models, as general models must process what task you want them to complete.

There are a variety of guides and collectives out there that can guide you on choosing the ‘green’ web hosts that are best for your business. When choosing AI-model vendors, you should look at options that prioritize ‘efficiency by design’: smaller, pruned models and edge-compute deployments can cut energy use by up to 50% compared to monolithic cloud-only models. They’re trained for specific tasks, so they don’t have to expend energy computing what the task is and how to go about it.

Using AI Tools Sustainably

Once you’ve chosen conscientious vendors, optimize how you actually use AI. You can take steps like batching non-urgent inference tasks to reduce idle GPU time, an approach shown to lower energy consumption overall compared to requesting ad-hoc, as you don’t have to keep running the GPU constantly, only when you need to use it.

Smarter prompts can also help make AI usage slightly more sustainable. Sam Altman of ChatGPT revealed early in 2025 that people’s propensity for saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to LLMs is costing millions of dollars and wasting energy as the Generative AI has to deal with extra phrases to compute that aren’t relevant to its task. You need to ensure that your prompts are direct and to the point, and deliver the context required to complete the task to reduce the need to reprompt.

Additional Strategies To Balance AI’s Environmental Cost

On top of being responsible with your AI tool choice and usage, there are other steps you can take to offset the carbon cost of AI usage and enjoy the efficiency benefits it brings. Organizations can reduce their own emissions and use carbon offsetting to reduce their own carbon footprint as much as possible. Combined with the apparent sustainability benefits of AI use, this approach can help mitigate the harmful impacts of energy-hungry AI.

You can ensure that you’re using green server hosting (servers run on sustainable energy) for your own site and cloud needs beyond AI, and refine your content delivery network (CDN) to ensure your sites and apps are serving compressed, optimized assets from edge locations, cutting the distance data must travel, which should reduce the associated energy use.

Organizations and individuals, particularly those with thought leadership status, can be advocates pushing for transparent sustainability specifications. This involves both lobbying politicians and regulatory bodies to introduce and enforce sustainability standards and ensuring that other members of the public are kept aware of the environmental costs of AI use.

It’s only through collective action that we’re likely to see strict enforcement of both sustainable AI data centers and the standardization of emissions reporting.

Regardless, it remains a tricky path to walk, along the double-edged sword of AI’s use in web design.

Use AI too much, and you’re contributing to its massive carbon footprint. Use it too little, and you’re likely to be left behind by rivals that are able to work more efficiently and deliver projects much faster.

The best environmentally conscious designers and organizations can currently do is attempt to navigate it as best they can and stay informed on best practices.

Conclusion

We can’t dispute that AI use in web design delivers on its promise of agility, personalization, and resource savings at the page-level. Yet without a holistic view that accounts for the environmental demands of AI infrastructure, these gains risk being overshadowed by an expanding energy and water footprint.

Achieving the balance between enjoying AI’s efficiency gains and managing its carbon footprint requires transparency, targeted deployment, human oversight, and a steadfast commitment to core sustainable web practices.

On August 4, 2025, Gartner published its Gartner Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services (SCPS). Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the longest-running Magic Quadrant Leader, with Gartner naming AWS a Leader for the fifteenth consecutive year.

In the report, Gartner once again placed AWS highest on the “Ability to Execute” axis. We believe this reflects our ongoing commitment to giving customers the broadest and deepest set of capabilities to accelerate innovation as well as unparalleled security, reliability, and performance they can trust for their most critical applications.

Here is the graphical representation of the 2025 Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services.

Largest cloud community – AWS has built a strong global community of cloud professionals, providing significant opportunities for learning and engagement.

Cloud-inspired silicon – AWS has used its cloud computing experience to develop custom silicon designs, including AWS Graviton, AWS Inferentia, and AWS Trainium, which enable tighter integration between hardware and software, improved power efficiency, and greater control over supply chains.

Global scale and operational execution – AWS’s significant share of global cloud market revenue has enabled it to build a larger and more robust network of integration partners than some other providers in this analysis, which in turn helps organizations successfully adopt cloud.

The most common feedback I hear from customers is that AWS has the largest and most dynamic cloud community, making it easy to ask questions and learn from millions of active customers and tens of thousands of partners globally. We recently launched our community hub, AWS Builder Center to connect directly with AWS Heroes and AWS Community Builders. You can also explore and join AWS User Groups and AWS Cloud Clubs in a city near you.

We have also focused on facilitating the digital transformation of enterprise customers through a number of enterprise programs, such as the AWS Migration Acceleration Program. Using generative AI on migration and modernization, we introduced AWS Transform, the first agentic AI service developed to accelerate enterprise modernization of mission-critical business workloads such as .NET, mainframe, and VMware.

Access the complete full Gartner report to learn more. It outlines the methodology and evaluation criteria used to develop their assessments of each cloud service provider included in the report. This report can serve as a guide when choosing a cloud provider that helps you innovate on behalf of your customers.

Ten years ago, we announced the general availability of Amazon Aurora, a database that combined the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases.

As Jeff described it in its launch blog post: “With storage replicated both within and across three Availability Zones, along with an update model driven by quorum writes, Amazon Aurora is designed to deliver high performance and 99.99% availability while easily and efficiently scaling to up to 64 TiB of storage.”

When we started developing Aurora over a decade ago, we made a fundamental architectural decision that would change the database landscape forever: we decoupled storage from compute. This novel approach enabled Aurora to deliver the performance and availability of commercial databases at one-tenth the cost.

This is one of the reasons why hundreds of thousands of AWS customers choose Aurora as their relational database.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Today, I’m excited to invite you to join us for a livestream event on August 21, 2025, to celebrate a decade of Aurora database innovation.

A brief look back at the past
Throughout the evolution of Aurora, we’ve focused on four core innovation themes: security as our top priority, scalability to meet growing workloads, predictable pricing for better cost management, and multi-Region capabilities for global applications. Let me walk you through some key milestones in the Aurora journey.

We previewed Aurora at re:Invent 2014, and made it generally available in July 2015. At launch, we presented Aurora as “a new cost-effective MySQL-compatible database engine.”

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

In June 2016, we introduced reader endpoints and cross-Region read replicas, followed by AWS Lambda integration and the ability to load tables directly from Amazon S3 in October. We added database cloning and export to Amazon S3 capabilities in June 2017 and full compatibility with PostgreSQL in October that year.

The journey continued with the serverless preview in November 2017, which became generally available in August 2018. Global Database launched in November 2018 for cross-Region disaster recovery. We introduced blue/green deployments to simplify database updates, and optimized read instances to improve query performance.

In 2023, we added vector capabilities with pgvector for similarity search for Aurora PostgreSQL, and Aurora I/O-Optimized to provide predictable pricing with up to 40 percent cost savings for I/O-intensive applications. We launched Aurora zero-ETL integration with Amazon Redshift which enables near real-time analytics and ML using Amazon Redshift on petabytes of transactional data from Aurora by removing the need for you to build and maintain complex data pipelines that perform extract, transform, and load (ETL) operations. This year we added Aurora MySQL zero-ETL integration with Amazon Sagemaker, enabling near real-time access of your data in the lakehouse architecture of SageMaker to run a broad range of analytics.

In 2024, we made it as effortless as just one click to select Aurora PostgreSQL as a vector store for Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases and launched Aurora PostgreSQL Limitless Database, a serverless horizontal scaling (sharding) capability.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

To simplify scaling for customers, we also increased the maximum storage to 128 TiB in September 2020, allowing many applications to operate within a single instance. Last month, we’ve further simplified scaling by doubling the maximum storage to 256 TiB, with no upfront provisioning required and pay-as-you-go pricing based on actual storage used. This enables even more customers to run their growing workloads without the complexity of managing multiple instances while maintaining cost efficiency.

Most recently, at re:Invent 2024, we announced Amazon Aurora DSQL, which became generally available in May 2025. Aurora DSQL represents our latest innovation in distributed SQL databases, offering active-active high availability and multi-Region strong consistency. It’s the fastest serverless distributed SQL database for always available applications, effortlessly scaling to meet any workload demand with zero infrastructure management.

Aurora DSQL builds on our original architectural principles of separation of storage and compute, taking them further with independent scaling of reads, writes, compute, and storage. It provides 99.99% single-Region and 99.999% multi-Region availability, with strong consistency across all Regional endpoints.

And in June, we launched Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for Aurora, so you can integrate your AI agents with your data sources and services.

Let’s celebrate 10 years of innovation
By attending the August 21 livestream event, you’ll hear from Aurora technical leaders and founders, including Swami Sivasubramanian, Ganapathy (G2) Krishnamoorthy, Yan Leshinsky, Grant McAlister, and Raman Mittal. You’ll learn directly from the architects who pioneered the separation of compute and storage in cloud databases, with technical insights into Aurora architecture and scaling capabilities. You’ll also get a glimpse into the future of database technology as Aurora engineers share their vision and discuss the complex challenges they’re working to solve on behalf of customers.

The event also offers practical demonstrations that show you how to implement key features. You’ll see how to build AI-powered applications using pgvector, understand cost optimization with the new Aurora DSQL pricing model, and learn how to achieve multi-Region strong consistency for global applications.

The interactive format includes Q&A opportunities with Aurora experts, so you’ll be able to get your specific technical questions answered. You can also receive AWS credits to test new Aurora capabilities.

If you’re interested in agentic AI, you’ll particularly benefit from the sessions on MCP servers, Strands Agents, and how to integrate Strands Agents with Aurora DSQL, which demonstrate how to safely integrate AI capabilities with your Aurora databases while maintaining control over database access.

Whether you’re running mission-critical workloads or building new applications, these sessions will help you understand how to use the latest Aurora features.

Register today to secure your spot and be part of this celebration of database innovation.

Gartner published the second Magic Quadrant for Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure (DHI), which includes Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a leader again. AWS has three products in this DHI portfolio: AWS Outposts, AWS Snowball, and AWS Local Zones. In the accompanying Gartner’s Critical Capabilities for DHI, AWS is ranked number one in four out of six use cases evaluated by Gartner—including hybrid infrastructure management, edge computing, assured workloads, and artificial intelligence & machine learning (AI/ML)—and among the top two in the use case of container management.

Gartner evaluates 10 DHI providers based on their Ability to Execute, which measures a vendor’s capacity to deliver its products or services effectively, and Completeness of Vision, which assesses a vendor’s understanding of the market and its strategy for future growth.

Here is the graphical representation of the 2024 Gartner Magic Quadrant for DHI.

Gartner recognized AWS strengths as:

Leading public cloud provider – AWS DHI solutions appeal to AWS public cloud customers that want to extend their infrastructure to their data center and edge locations, while also migrating from their remaining private cloud infrastructure.

As-a-service delivery – The fully managed infrastructure delivery of AWS Outposts simplifies operations and enables a hands-off, single-vendor approach to infrastructure management, including integration with some on-premises technologies.

AWS support – Gartner clients report high satisfaction with the AWS worldwide support and services team.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

We believe this leader placement reflects our innovation at the edge of the cloud for workloads that require low latency, local data processing, data residency, or migration with on-premises interdependencies. At AWS, we extend the same AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools wherever you need them for a truly consistent cloud experience.

Whether your workloads are running in the AWS Regions, in metro areas with AWS Local Zones, on premises with AWS Outposts, in the telco networks with AWS Wavelength, or at the far edge with AWS Snow Family, you can standardize on the same cloud operating model for all your applications. You can streamline developer workflow by standardizing on a common set of continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. It also reduces the time, resources, operational risk, and maintenance downtime required to manage IT infrastructure.

As examples of accelerated innovation, we have added the latest generation of GPU-backed instances to Local Zones to better support ML workloads and expanded the number of locations. We have made Outposts available in more countries and added AWS services supported on Outposts to facilitate migration and disaster recovery, such as AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery and Amazon Route 53 Resolver to improve application availability and performance.

Today, we celebrate 10 years of Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) and its incredible journey of pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the cloud! What began as a solution to streamline running Docker containers on Amazon Web Services (AWS) has evolved into a cornerstone technology, offering both impressive performance and operational simplicity, including a serverless option with AWS Fargate for seamless container orchestration.

Over the past decade, Amazon ECS has become a trusted solution for countless organizations, providing the reliability and performance that customers such as SmugMug rely on to power their operations without being bogged down by infrastructure challenges. As Andrew Shieh, Principal Engineer at SmugMug, shares, Amazon ECS has been the “unsung hero” behind their seamless transition to AWS and efficient handling of massive data operations, such as migrating petabytes of photos to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). “The blazingly fast container spin-ups allow us to deliver awesome experiences to our customers,” he adds. It’s this kind of dependable support that has made Amazon ECS a favorite among developers and platform teams, helping them scale their solutions and innovate over the years.

In the early 2010s, as containerized services like Docker gained traction, developers started looking for efficient ways to manage and scale their applications in this new paradigm. Traditional infrastructure was cumbersome, and managing containers at scale was challenging. Amazon ECS arrived in 2014, just when developers were looking to adopt containers at scale. It offered a fully managed, and reliable solution that streamlined container orchestration on AWS. Teams could focus on building and deploying applications without the overhead of managing clusters or complex infrastructure, ushering in a new era of cloud-native development.

When the Amazon ECS team set out to build the service, their vision was clear. As Deepak Singh, product manager who launched Amazon ECS now serving as VP of Next Generation Developer Experience, said at the time, “Our customers wanted a solution that was deeply integrated with AWS, that could work for them at scale and could grow as they grew.” Amazon ECS was designed to use the best of what AWS has to offer—scalability, availability, resilience, and security—to give customers the confidence to run their applications in production environments.

Read moreHTML Element: select | Envato Tuts+

Evolution
Amazon ECS has consistently innovated for customers over the past decade. It marked the beginning of the container innovation journey at AWS, paving the way for a broader ecosystem of container-related services that have transformed how businesses build and manage applications.

Smartsheet proudly sings the praises of the significant impact that Amazon ECS, and especially AWS Fargate, had on their business to date. “Our teams can deploy more frequently, increase throughput, and reduce the engineering time to deploy from hours to minutes. We’ve gone from weekly deployments to deployments that we do multiple times a day. And from what used to be hours of at least two engineers’ time, we’ve been able to shave that down to several minutes,” said Skylar Graika, distinguished engineer at Smartsheet. ” Within the last year, we have been able to scale out its capacity by 50 times, and by leveraging deep integrations across AWS services, we have improved efficiencies and simplified our security and compliance process. Additionally, by adopting AWS Graviton with the Fargate deployments, we’ve seen a 20 percent reduction in cost.”

Amazon ECS played a pivotal role as the starting point for a decade of container evolution at AWS and today, it still stands as one of the most scalable and reliable container orchestration solutions, powering massive operations such as Prime Day 2024, where Amazon launched an impressive 77.24 million ECS tasks, Rufus, a shopping assistant experience powered by generative AI that uses Amazon ECS as part of its core architecture and so many others.

Rustem Feyzkhanov, ML engineering manager at Instrumental, and AWS Machine Learning Hero, is quick to recognize the increased efficiency gained from adopting the service. “Amazon ECS has become an indispensable tool in our work,” says Rastem. “Over the past years, it has simplified container management and service scaling, allowing us to focus on development rather than infrastructure. This service makes it possible for application code teams to co-own infrastructure and that speeds up the development process.”

Read moreSkipping the WHM Getting Started Wizard | cPanel Blog

Timeline
Let’s have a look at some of the key milestones that have shaped the evolution of ECS, marking pivotal moments that changed how customers harness the power of containers on AWS.

2014 – Introducing Amazon EC2 Container Service! – Check out this nostalgic blog post, which marked the release of ECS in preview mode. It shows how much functionality the service already launched with making a big impact from the get-go! Customers could already run, stop, and manage Docker containers on a cluster of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances, with built-in resource management and task scheduling. It became generally available on April 9, 2015.

2015 – Amazon ECS auto-scaling – With the introduction of added support for more Amazon CloudWatch metrics, customers could now automatically scale their clusters in and out by monitoring the CPU and memory usage in the cluster and configuring threshold values for auto scaling. I think this is a great example of how seemingly modest releases can have a huge impact for customers. Another impactful release was the introduction of Amazon ECR, a fully managed container registry that streamlines container storage and deployment.

2016 – Application Load Balancer (ALB) for ECS – The introduction of ALB for ECS, provided advanced routing features for containerized applications. ALB enabled more efficient load balancing across microservices, improving traffic management and scalability for ECS workloads. Windows users also benefitted from various releases this year including the added support for Windows Server 2016 with several AMIs and right and beta support for Windows Server Containers.

Read moreGone Phishing | cPanel Blog

2017 – Introducing AWS Fargate! – Fargate was a huge leap forward towards customers being able to run containers without managing the underlying infrastructure, which significantly streamlined their operations. Developers no longer had to worry about provisioning, scaling, or maintaining the EC2 instances on which their containers ran and could now focus entirely on their application logic while AWS handled the rest. This helped them to scale faster and innovate more freely, accelerating their cloud-centered journeys and transforming how they approached containerized applications.

2018 – AWS Auto Scaling – With this release, teams could now build scaling plans easily for their Amazon ECS tasks. This year also saw the release of many improvements such as moving Amazon ECR to its own console experience outside of the Amazon ECS console, integration of Amazon ECS with AWS Cloud Map, and many others. Additionally, AWS Fargate continued to expand into regions world-wide.

2019 – Arm-based Graviton2 instances available on Amazon ECS – AWS Graviton2 was released during a time when many businesses were turning their attention towards reprioritizing their sustainability goals. With a focus on improved performance and lower power usage, EC2-instances powered by Graviton2 were supported on Amazon ECS from day 1 of their launch. Customers could take full advantage of this new groundbreaking custom chipset specially built for the cloud. Another great highlight from this year was the launch of AWS Fargate Spot which helped customers to achieve significant cost reductions.

2020 – Bottlerocket – An open-source, Linux-based operating system optimized for running containers. Designed to improve security and simplify updates, Bottlerocket helped Amazon ECS users achieve greater efficiency and stability in managing containerized workloads.

2021 – ECS Exec – Amazon ECS introduced ECS Exec in March 2021. With it, customers could run commands directly inside a running container on Amazon EC2 or AWS Fargate. This feature provided enhanced troubleshooting and debugging capabilities without requiring to modify or redeploy containers, streamlining operational workflows. This year also saw the release of Amazon ECS Windows containers streamlined operations for those running them in their cluster.

2022 – Amazon ECS introduces Service Connect – The release of ECS Service Connect marked a pivotal moment for organizations running microservices architectures on Amazon ECS because it abstracted away much of the complexity involved in service-to-service networking. This dramatically streamlined management of communication between services. With a native service discovery and service mesh capability, developers could now define and manage how their services interacted with each other seamlessly, improving observability, resilience, and security without the need to manage custom networking or load balancers.

2023 – Amazon GuardDuty ECS runtime monitoring – Last year, Amazon GuardDuty introduced ECS Runtime Monitoring for AWS Fargate, enhancing security by detecting potential threats within running containers. This feature provides continuous visibility into container workloads, improving security posture without additional performance overhead.

2024 – Amazon ECS Fargate with EBS Integration – In January this year, Amazon ECS and AWS Fargate added support for Amazon EBS volumes, enabling persistent storage for containers. This integration allows users to attach EBS volumes to Fargate tasks, making it much more effortless to deploy storage and support data intensive applications.

Where are we now?
Amazon ECS is in an exciting place right now as it enjoys a level of maturity that allows it to keep innovating while delivering huge value to both new and existing customers. This year has seen many improvements to the service making it increasingly more secure, cost-effective and straightforward to use.

This includes releases such as the support for automatic traffic encryption using TLS in Service Connect; enhanced stopped task error messages which makes it more straightforward to troubleshoot task launch failures; and the ability to restart containers without having to relaunch the task. The introduction of Graviton2 based instances with AWS Fargate Spot provided customers with a great opportunity to double down on their cost savings.

As usual with AWS, the Amazon ECS team are very focused on delighting customers. “With Amazon ECS and AWS Fargate, we make it really easy for you to focus on your differentiated business logic while leveraging all the powerful compute that AWS offers without having to manage it,” says Nick Coult, director of Product and Science, Serverless Compute. “Our vision with these services was, and still is, to enable you to minimize infrastructure management, write less code, architect for extensibility, and drive high performance, resilience, and security. And, we have continuously innovated in these areas with this goal in mind over the past 10 years. At Amazon ECS, we remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering agility without compromising security, empowering developers with an exceptional experience, unlocking broader, simpler integrations, and new possibilities for emerging workloads like generative AI.”

Conclusion
Looking back on its history, it’s clear to me that ECS is a testament to the AWS approach of working backwards from customer needs. From its early days of streamlining container orchestration to the transformative introduction of Fargate and Service Connect, ECS has consistently evolved to remove barriers for developers and businesses alike.

As we look to the future, I think ECS will keep pushing boundaries, enabling even more innovative and scalable solutions. I encourage everyone to continue exploring what ECS has to offer, discovering new ways to build and pushing the platform to its full potential. There’s a lot more to come, and I’m excited to see where the journey takes us.

Learning resources
If you’re new to Amazon ECS, I recommend you read the comprehensive and accessible Getting Started With Amazon ECS guide.

When you’re ready to skill up with some hands-on free training, I recommend trying this self-paced Amazon ECS workshop, which covers many aspects of the service, including many of the features mentioned in this post.

Thank you, Amazon ECS, and thank you to all of you who use this service and continue to help us make it better for you. Here’s to another 10 years of container innovation! 🥂
