S60 Web Browser Shortcut Keys

The web browser on my Nokia Nseries phones is my most used application and up until now I did not know the list of shortcuts available. I knew they existed, but I pressed buttons not knowing what will happen. If you feel the same, here are the shortcuts as well as a request for the S60 web browser developers.

Shortcut Keys

  • Press 1 to open your bookmarks.
  • Press 2 to search for keywords in the current page.
  • Press 3 to return to the previous page.
  • Press 5 to list all open windows.
  • Press 8 to show the page overview of the current page.
  • Press 8 again to zoom in and view the desired section of the page.
  • Press 9 to enter a new web address.
  • Press 0 to go to the start page.
  • Press * or to zoom the page in or out.

Request

Add a shortcut that adds .com to the end of the URL addresses. You can see this on the iPhone’s keyboard. This is really useful and I’m sure many will agree. I submitted this request in the feature wishlist. UPDATE: If you like this request, add your name to the list to request “.com” shortcut in s60 browser.

.COM.com button shortcut on the iPhone’s browser.

Do you know if there is anyway of disabling this? Google Reader mobile is a great app and also has numeric shortcuts but they don’t work in the Nokia browser.

No, I don’t think we can disable this.

I really wish there was such an option, because then I could finally turn it ON! Ever since I got my N95 all those wonderful and extremely useful shortcuts have simply not been working. Sigh! Well, at least this way I have had no problems using the Google Reader mobile shortcuts… :-)

Great post Mark – one more worth mentioning for all FP1 devices is that if you hold down the center d-pad key it will open the toolbar.

Regarding the .com there should be a “comma separated” setting that we can edit (like .com,.co.uk,.org etc) so that as soon as you type a dot it shows the possible addresses (similar to when you type an address, it shows the addresses from your history). This is already implemented in other browsers and I agree with you it’s a must.

Also, I don’t know if this solution existed before from somewhere else, but I uploaded a light page to my site that can be used to open a new tab (and use more frequently the 5 button) ;-)

As another request for the developers, please give us an option to EDIT the current pages URL rather than having to type in a new URL from scratch.

As an example if I visit finance.yahoo.com and then want to go to mail.yahoo.com I should only have to delete “finance” and type in “mail”. When you are using T9 every saved keypress helps.

Look at Opera Mini 4 or IE Mobile if you need examples of how this can be done.

I just came back to using a Nokia handset, got myself an E66 and was a bit disappointed that we can’t switch between “shortcut keys” mode and “access keys” mode. They should have allowed it. Most of the sites like Facebook and Twitter uses access keys extensively.
