Featured App: Psiloc Connect For Auto-switching WiFi and Phone Network

Another must-have application I recommend for the Nokia S60 phones is Psiloc Connect. It creates an access point that connects to your existing wifi connection before it uses the phone network to get on the internet. You save money if you don’t have unlimited data and you don’t have to worry about switching between access points.

The Setup

The application is pretty much self-explanatory after running it. In fact, you only need to run it once, and forget about it. Select the option Connect via 3G/GSM if WLAN is not available, and then select the access point to your phone network. That’s it.

What’s left to do is selecting the Psiloc Connect access point in your browser or other applications that need to go online. From now on, you won’t need to change access points when you are out of range from the wireless router.

Where to Get

You can download and try it out for free for 10 days at the Psiloc shop. If you like it, then buy it for $16 USD or 10 euros.

Thoughts

This application should have been already built in with our Nokia phones. It’s a shame we have to spend extra and rely on a third-party company to do it the right way. Uh oh… I’m going to mention the iPhone again. When I use my girlfriend’s iPhone, I don’t have to bother with another application to handle my connections. If I’m at home, it’ll use the wifi connection. If I’m outside, it’ll use the network. Thankfully Psiloc came out with this application to cover Nokia’s shortcoming.

  1. The one thing this app does not do in my experience is switch back … it’s one way to Wifi which is fine in most situation, but it’s not smart enough (or was not the last time I tried) to switch back to 3G / Edge when you left a location.

  2. Hmm, this app works fine with browsing the net, but does not seem to support VoIP in any way…

  3. From what I understand the functionality of this app is built in to S60 3.2 (N78 & N96 and onwards).

  4. @Nick I hope so. I haven’t played with the new OS yet.

  5. Access point groups were available in e61i, but not in the e90 or the e71…

  6. @Nick - only for some application: Browser and Messaging seems to use “smart” connecting. For example “Share Online” is not smart enough to use it.

btw, Psiloc Connect has some problems with hidden WLAN’s, at least on my N78.

  8. grrr….

One thing I miss in my new e71 as oposed to my shiny new e71 is access groups. I am not about to pay on an app for my new phone to get functionality I had in a 2 years old phone !

  9. sorry it was my new e71 as opposed to my old e61
