8 Megapixel Nokia Nseries Cameraphone With Carl Zeiss Lens Coming to MWC 09

It looks like Nokia will be announcing a Nokia Nseries phone with 8 megapixels and Carl Zeiss lens at the upcoming Mobile World Congress a few days from now. They’ve posted a sample photo taken from the said device, and after analyzing the Exif data, some specs are “leaked”.

Here is the resized photo below. Click for the original file and check out the Exif data yourself.

8mp

The photo is 3274×2448 pixels which equals to 8 megapixels. Another major info is the Make and Model of the camera used. The exif data says Nokia Undisclosed (Carl Zeiss).

There’s an issue where people argue that megapixels isn’t that important. However, I came to realize that more megapixels do come in very handy. I don’t want the image quality to suffer in case I need to crop and resize photos.

It looks like Mobile World Congress 09 will actually be exciting for Nokia. I’ll be watching closely. You should too.

  • Its really cool, I came to know this really worth visiting, just bookmarked your site.

The place where fun never ends
  • Looks very promising. I agree about the resolution thing, I'm not the world's best photographer so I need to be able to crop to get a photo that I'm happy with.
  • I think the N86, which I'm guessing this was taken with may just be the replacement for my N95 8GB. It's my 1st N Series, and 1st Nokia for about 5 years, but there's no going back! I just looked at a photo I took on my N95 and noticed they shoot at 300dpi, which is print quality, too!

This post makes me think back to the days of owning my Nokia N95 8G. I loved that phone. 8G seems to be fairly standard now but Nokia was well aghead of the pack when it forst released the N95 handsets. Unwisely I was tempted by the Samsung Tocco Ultra. Goof camera but not a patch on my previous N95.

  • Crikey - 8 m/pixels!? Not so long ago I spent over 250 GBP (almost double in dollars) on a sony digital camera which is only 5.1 m/pixels and my phone of around the same time only had a VGA camera (whatever VGA resolution is). Now for the same price or less I can get a camera in a mobile phone that would blow both of them out of the water, combined? Crazy stuff.
  • I'm waiting for HD video

The picture quality looks great in that pic and if your going to resize the pictures once taken the more megapixels the better your final image will be. 8 maga pixel cameras are well on their way. I'm holding out to compare this new Nokia with the Samsung Taco which also boasts an 8pm camera but also has touchscreen functionality. I still use an N95 so do prefer nokias. An Nseries with touchscreen would be an awesome addition to teh collection if only Nokia would make one.
  • great job

I sincerely hope that this time Nokia releases a good 8MP cameraphone with Xenon flash for photos & LED for videos. Also I hope that it would have an OLED touchscreen with 16M colours and at least a VGA resolution(640x480).Not one with the resolution of N97(640x360).Now we just need to wait & watch...

That picture still sucks. All these camera phones might have decent quality, but capturing movement sucks. Just look at the skateboard, it is not arc shaped in real life, the camera screws up the shape of it since it is moving. I know this because I skate, and that picture looks retarded to me.
  • @Harrison, Looks pretty good to me, not much blurring. I find it odd that you think the camera is distorting the image as nothing else looks distorted. I do know that skateboards flex easily under load and considering the action he is performing, I don't doubt that the board is flexing. Most likely springing back from a heavy downward flex needed to launch into the air. Good boards act like a spring, not a solid plank. I hope in the future you can find a more eloquent word to describe your feeling about a camera phones picture quality.
I have been trying to decide between an E71 and an N85 as my N95-1 is showing its age. If there is a xenon flash 8 MP N85 coming I will be waiting..... Wish I could wait for the N97, but I have a feeling that the NAM version wont be here till around christmas. (at which point my good old N95 will be over two years old and will have quit on me) Still miss my 8801 but the smart revolution is here and so is brilliant picture quality from a phone.

Just be patient and wait for 3-4 more days and see what happens in MWC 2009. All this talk blows my mind off. Calm down =)

    phone is dashing
  • why it's not N85 8MP (like N95 8GB) !!

more megapixels can make image worse - smaller light sensors = more noise! the lens is the limit, on these phones 3 to 4Mpix is probably the resolving limit. just buy a big fast card so you can set the image quality to maximum to keep jpeg artifacts to a minimum.

a lot of people "damage" their photos unnecessarily. if you need to rotate, only do lossless jpeg rotations on the original file. NEVER edit or modify the original image! If you do crop and retouch or adjust colour and gamma etc, re-save the file as a lossless png and work on that! If you scale that copy, use a tool that does proper interpolated scaling, not just nearest neighbour.

I bought my N82 for the GPS and the 5 mp camera. It takes fair casual pics, but the small file size, as compared to a standalone camera makes it unsuitable for prints of any decent size. I wouldn't bother trying to print anything larger than a 3X5 with a 3 mb file. Most people who shoot pics with a camera phone show them on the phone itself, so I guess it will be OK if the screen is large enough. The N82's sure isn't.

If it has the 8MP than we are looking at the Nokia handset with the codename Corolla: 3" non-touch VGA display, 8MP camera, half QWERTY keyboard, 128MB RAM, 8GB ROM, WiFi, uPnP, HSPA, AGPS, and an FM transmitter. Sadly no information about the flash.

As for the N85 refresh: According to the roadmap it will feature a Xenon flash and will add 8 to 16GB of on-board memory, to the existing hardware.
  • Good to know! Thanks!
  • Egads ! About time I'd say !
  • I hope they bring back the xenon! I don't want the blue colour when the LED flashes!
  • @Mark Guim - Looks that way. I remember on the leaked roadmap there was an upgrade to N85 handset, supposedly with Xenon flash, but may be an 8MP camera instead now?
