Nokia Android Phone Unveiling at Nokia World 09

I asked when Nokia will come out with a device that gives a refreshing WOW factor, then the Guadian publishes an article a day later claiming a Nokia Android phone is going to be revealed in September at Nokia World 09. I’m excited to hear the possibility of Nokia delivering feature-packed hardware using a snazzy new OS.

Nokia Android

The sources cited were unnamed industry insiders so we can’t accept this as fact yet. I say bring it on! I think Nokia needs a facelift and Android could be what they need. What do you think?

Update: Nokia slams the rumor. A spokesman was quoted on Reuters, “Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever… Everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices.”

  • Here’s something. Maybe YOU AREN’T READY FOR android. When I bought my N78 (Symbian), it was cool. But the competition has long since caught up. Gimme a break, Android is not ready for you, and yet you throw us crap like the N97 and N96, 1990’s era phones that only a fanboy could love? Grow up Nokia, Symbian is a dying horse, you would be wise to abandon it as soon as possible. WinMo 6.5, Android, and the iPhone are the only platforms that will continue to innovate. Nokia, keep giving us this junk and watch the rest of the world move froward while you remain in your own dreamland, stuck in the past
  • Nokia can deny this rumor as much as they would like, but we all know Nokia is playing with the idea. As Mark notes, they need to do something to compete with the industry and this could be an easy way to do that but it would also have huge financial liabilities. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a Nokia tablet running on Android OS before phone.
  • payam I do not agree.
Did you ever think about why Google is in the game?
Googles Operating System is for free!! Do they want to make money with it? Yes they do. How? By tying people more in to the Google ecosystem. For example default search but also Gmail in your face.

What about Nokia? Yes, they also want to make money with Symbian and with Maemo. How? By selling and crating premium aps like the navigation for Nokia maps and getting commission on game sales (N-gage) etc pp.

So Nokia going Android is a definite no go at this moment and the story just proves how little research the Guardian editor made. See what Stefan Constantinescu has done a nice write up on IntoMobile: http://bit.ly/ZoVjz
  • Andre, I am very well aware of the positions that both Nokia and Google have in this market. In your argument, you fail to recoginze how Nokia plans to make money on game sales, Ovi maps, etc. I dont see anybody paying $ 9.99 for a mobile app on the Ovi store. Do you?

At the end, it comes down to what consumers want and if Nokia's market share keeps dipping like it has over the past 12 months (from 56% to 47% this year), they would have no choice to at least entertain the alternatives.I do agree that Nokia is not releasing an Android phone anytime soon but to think that their team has not looked into possibilities is just silly.

Also please read http://bit.ly/1a3Zjx that clarifies the Guardian article. At least this rumor helped get some positive discussions going and thats always a good thing :)
  • Thanks Payam for the link about QT I had read it earlier on today.

I am sure Nokia will find a way to monetize Symbian and Maemo. Nokia are already a good number of navigational licenses and went in to the right direction by including a 3 month trial. The version 3 is a lot better then the version 2 (which did not find streets here in chile).

Here is an article I found from Reuters about the revenue expected from location based services:

"Strategy Analytics expects revenues derived from services and applications that are enabled by location to rise to $7.8 billion in 2013 from $650 million in 2008, driven by location enabled search and use of mobile phones for voice guided navigation." http://bit.ly/t2q2q

They do have catching up to do on the UI and I hope they can pull it of but using Android makes them to a cheap hardware vendor and I am sure they are not at all interested in this.
  • Sven
    Hoax, hoax & hoax
  • sorry to spoil the party...
Nokia has already denied this: http://twi.gy/kWMS

Nokia wants to make money with the Symbian operating systems and make money through Software as an example take the overpriced Nokia maps. I do not see them running phones on Android before their Market share has declined to 20% I am hopeful that they will be able to improve Symbian touch and win a little of their competitiveness again. I am still on my N95 8gb as I see no reason to upgrade to a N97 which uses almost the same software and a slow (!) processor
  • Sociofranco
quite right, I agree 100% with you, I still can't believe on how many people havve fallen for the N97's hype and been ready to fork out the hefty price, considering that doesn't do much more than my N95 8GB does...
  • Sociofranco
ah ah ah ah....this just makes me laugh....they are LATE! they should have used Android on the N97 already, symbian looks absolutely ridiculous when compared to the elegance and fluidity of Android, Palm Pré and iPhone.
Nokia; a market leader should know best shouldn't it??..it shouldn't chase competition...should innovate!!!!
  • jonnimar
Hope they will use that new chip from intel as power horse toped up with Android= get one for sure
  • tony
Fantastic, My wife just bought the G1 and I love it. was tempted to get one myself, now I might wait for the Nokia version.
  • Is it possible that Nokia could put both Android *and* Symbian Foundation on one single device, through either virtualisation, emulation or dual boot?

It's a strategy that's served Apple remarkably well in the last few years.
  • Nels
I hope the android can be use for nokia n97 or have option to change os
  • It'd be awesome! I doubt it'll happen, though.

    Maemo, maybe. N900 anyone?
  • Yes, yes and YES!
