Nokia N97 Mini Preview by Mobile Review

Not to be outshined by the announcement of the Nokia Booklet 3G, Eldar Murtazin published an early preview of the Nokia N97 mini too. It’s practically the same flagship device, but a bit smaller, missing lens cover, altered keyboard layout, and 100 Euros cheaper.

Nokia n97 Mini 1

You should read the whole Nokia N97 mini preview written by Eldar, but I have summarized it down to what I think are important.

  • 3.2in touchscreen
  • It sports a metal battery cover.
  • The N97’s 32 Gb of built-in memory have been reduced to 8Gb.
  • The phone’s software features kinetic scrolling (which will be introduced in the N97’s second firmware scheduled for mid September).
  • It targets those who got put off by the original N97’s chunky casing.
  • It could be offered with unlimited navigation license.

I could see why current Nokia N97 owners would get mad at this release after spending a lot of money on the original. On the other hand, this is good news for those who waited. The missing lens cover means no scratches caused by sliding mechanism, but they still need to be careful putting the phone in the same pocket as their house keys. The smaller storage capacity effectively lowering the price also makes it a little more affordable to consumers.

What’s on your mind?

Are you a current Nokia N97 owner? What do you feel about the mini version? How about those who skipped the N97… Does the Nokia N97 mini interests you?

This type of move by Nokia is utterly ridiculous and I beg to see the reasoning behind someone's love for this device. Don't get me wrong the N97 is quite big but it's not uncomfortably big and it sure as hell looks better than this thing.

The N97 Mini is not all that smaller and that metal back cover, ughh! They should have left the cover off of the N97 or actually got the thing right before launching it (that would be a good answer). I like the idea of the reducing the memory to just 8GB because not a lot of people would even use 8GB of memory. I don't see the justification in just reducing it 100 euros though.

I don't believe the N97 should have ever been priced the way it was but the N97 Mini has significantly less memory, and it's still going to cost nearly £400 GBP? I'd settle for saving up and buying an iPhone 3G or 3GS.

… finally, what the heck is going on with that keyboard on the Mini? Nokia's response to customers wanting a cheaper N97. “Let's just put any old keyboard layout in there so it confuses them even more and looks even worse!”.

Well, that's enough for tonight me thinks!

I own the n97, will sell it on ebay and buy the mini or if something better comes out. Will wait for nokia world to see what's the best to come.

these days i never carry the same device for more than 2 weeks and own multiple phones. it's just the nature of the industry better things keep coming at you and then there's those you want to try.

And i'm not even a blogger.. lol

Utterly ridiculous. I own the N97 and have been a Nokia fan for years. I do feel they are tryign their hardest to alienate any loyal fans at the moment but charging the max they can then releaseing a better phone.
Look at the N96 and now the N97.

The N900 won;t be far behind and that has a much better processor and RAm and will be cheaper too!
