Nokia N97 Mini Targeted For Fashionistas

Plenty of Nokia users are probably wondering why Nokia decided to make the Nokia N97 mini so soon after the release of the flagship Nokia N97. I asked this question to a spokesperson at Nokia World in Stuttgart, Germany and filmed the response. Check it out.

According to the Nokia rep, they are targeting a different audience for the Nokia N97 mini. These are people who are more fashion and design-centric than the regular Nokia N97 users. They want all the technical features, but also place importance on being able to flaunt the device.

As a Nokia N97 user, I’m a little confused at who they are targeting. I use the Nokia N97 and flaunt it to my friends whenever I get the chance. I also think it’s a beautiful device.

The Nokia N97 Mini and the regular Nokia N97 are pretty much similar except the missing lens cover, different keypad, smaller battery, 8GB built-in memory instead of 32GB. The size is smaller, but the difference isn’t very noticeable.

As a current Nokia N97 user, the Nokia N97 mini looks tempting because it looks like it can take night photos without the flash flooding. This problem is notorious on the regular Nokia N97.

The Nokia N97 Mini is arguably Nokia's most powerful handset to date, and it combines a large touch-sensitive display with a QWERTY keyboard, 3.5G high-speed data, a 5 megapixel camera plus GPS and mapping support, but will this be enough to catch up and beat the dominance of the iPhone. Well I been seeing a lot of iPhone killer also known as (MID) Mobile Internet Devices lately, but none has really lived up to it expectations.

  • No long until this is out in the UK now. Vodafone are taking pre-orders, but won't be until next week. Is the brown the only colour its gonna be available in?
  • That is one seriously good looking phone. Problem with the small form factor Nokia phones is the keyboard. If you have fat or clumbsy fingers you are going to be proding lots of keys at once.

Me parece absurdo la creacion del Nokia N97 mini. Yo tengo el NOKIA N97 y la verdad es que es ideal de tamaƱo y de caracteristicas. No entiendo la creacion de otro simil del N97.

  • I think the biggest difference is the price. It will be significantly lower - if not, Nokia has a pretty big blunder on their hand.

I think the size and weight improvements allow this product to be better marketed to women. Without trying to be sexist, anecdotally i've found that a lot of women find the N97 too heavy and large, whereas the N97 mini would be just acceptable to their taste. This also assumes women are less likely to use up the 32GB, plays as many games (gaming keys) and hence require less battery life as well (smaller screen, potentially less power draining activites). The mini's size and weight are also more comparable to the Iphone.

The question is: when can we expect a NAM release? I'm not particularly a fashionista but if this version of the n97 corrects a lot of the faults that we see in the original n97 (bug fixes, scratched lens, camera flash issues, low RAM) then maybe I'll take the plunge. I'm waiting to get a review regarding battery life too given the drop in mA.
