Nokia N8 To Be Announced at MWC with Symbian^3, 12MP, 720p Recording?

Tom’s Guide from France claims to have received exclusive information on upcoming Nokia devices. They report that Nokia will have five total ranges including the C, X, E, N, and S series. Perhaps the biggest scoop is about Nokia’s supposedly next major release named the Nokia N8.

The site is in French, so I’m trying to quote from the translation.

Symbian 3

According to the Tom’s Guide, here are the letters and numbers that identify the series.

  • C: lower end voice-based.
  • X: focus on entertainment, music for a young target
  • E: dedicated to business, solutions for e-mails
  • N: High-end
  • S: very upscale and limited editions

They highlighted some devices as major models.

  • Nokia C5-00 – Basic business device with GPS. Expected June.
  • Nokia C3-00 – A low-cost multitasking Symbian S40 Qwerty device that run emails in the background.
  • Nokia C5-01 – Qwerty device that’s a direct competitor to Blackberry.

And last but not least, the Nokia N8-00. It is scheduled for the summer with a capacitive multitouch 3.5in display and be the first to offer Symbian^3 OS. It carries a 12 megapixel camera and capture 720p at 30 frames per second. It will also feature an HDMI output. Another interesting mention is Video on Demand through the Ovi Store.

I don’t know how reliable this information is, but the web site looks legitimate. MWC is just a few days away. We’ll see if there’s any truth to these rumors.

So what's up with the N900? It's like Nokia's stepchild or something.

  • Jim

Honestly, the separation now between E-series and N-series devices is rather silly, especially when you consider that the N97 Mini handles email and Mail For Exchange better than the E72 which is a dedicated business device, not to mention the various reports that the E72 doesn't work with many bluetooth devices.

Once again announcing devices 6, 8 months before release. By then the Nexus Five will be out. FAIL!

  • http://thenokiablog.com Mark Guim

They haven't announced anything yet. We're still waiting to see this is just
    a rumor.

  • John

I thought Nokia wasn't going to be announcing any phone during MWC this year…

  • Jim

    I agree with josesxi.

Announce a product at MOST 60-90 days prior to release.

Announcing phones, say at Mobile World Conference, and not releasing them until December, dooms your product. It’ll be instantly out of date, due to the fast moving smartphone market.

wow. all people can do is whine.

    Fantastic rumorr/news!

i was waiting for mwc to see what nokia has in store for the mobile world. though most of america does not like symbian, they are in love the fancy iphone os and now falling deep in love with android. well, with symbian 3 being announced and most probably shown off and given beautiful hardware to go with, maybe their thinking will change.

but even if it doesn't make a huge impact stateside, and i don't see how, with an improved UI (what everybody is wishing for) capacitive screen, 12mp cam (higher than any android or iphone) 720p, hdmi out, and specs we have not seen and plus we have no idea what it will look like, the rest of the world will happily take it with open arms. also with symbian now open source, expect great apps from developers.

I heard Nokia's not coming to MWC, but this sounds quite interesting indeed.

    “…a direct competitor to Blackberry…”
Well, E75 was announced as a messaging device to compete with the blackberry family, and well – afaik it failed miserably.
Hoping that since that Nokia would learn from that fiasco and after waiting for half a year after they announced the E72 i went for it and bought it their “Blackberry replacement” smartphone and so far (have it for nearly two weeks) I can say, they once again fail to live up for the expectations as an “ultimate messaging device”.

Don't get me wrong, I love the phone, it's beautiful and has lots of features but the software is so unstable, so buggy and beta that it just ruins the experience alltogethrer.

That said, I really would like to see how a (cheaper!) device will perform as a “blackberry competitor”…

  • imransoorya

no news about e90″s successor.. its due this month at MWC.. i'll go crazy if i dont get to see a new communicator on 15th feb 2010.

  • surethom

Xenon Flash Please, Nokia have not used one since N82, which I still have, but I want a Nokia Touchscreen with Xenon Flash.

  • Jimster

But I think E72 is way more robust as a physical device and software-wise. And I think those things are essential when you compare E-series to N-series.

  • http://www.n97fanatics.com Mike Macias

If Nokia makes this 12mp phone WITH xenon flash, it will be a hit. If not then I will pass.

I wonder which processor Nokia will be using for N8. I hope it'll be featuring a super high end CPU since it support the 60 FPS UI for Symbian^60 and 720p recording.

  • Christian

If this is true, then – Wow. If these specs pan out, it looks like for the first time since the N82, Nokia will have released a complete dream phone. Xenon flash? Check. 720p recording? Check. Multi-touch? Check. If they keep in those three things, I'm sold, and I imagine lots of other people will be as well.

  • Nakael

Well… though nokia is not setting a big booth at mobile congress… cont u think Intel partnering with Nokia may results in a powerful processor for 3G standards with a new phone.

  • chris

Can't tell you how but i know for a fact that the Nokia N8 will be here in the summer with 12 mp camera and multi-touch, it will run on Symbian not Maemo…

  • http://electricmobile.ru/ Vitaliy

12mp cam and multitouch? Cool phone! But may be it price will be wery large (>500euro) :( (

  • mobilemaster

Guys, I read on a site Symbian 3 devices will be announced in quarter 2, so maybe this is not true. I would like to see the phone. :) By the way I am not a NOkia phone, but I like the N series very much! :D

  • mobilemaster

I heard Nokia will not participate at MWC. ABout the N8, I read Symbian 3 devices will be announced in quarter 2. I hope I am not right. :D

  • http://www.blastingmind.com/ Blasting Mind

    Looks interesting.. :D

  • Sofiagr

Wow, I was waiting for this, my digital camera is years outdated and I want a new phone. Looks that I don't have to pay for two devices now! Even with a price of 500+ Euros I would buy it the problem is, that the new Nokia models allway show up with a big delay here in Greece. (Problem of general importer Alpha Copy???)

  • LessThanDoug

3.5″ display on the N8-00?? Please, take a hint from HTC Nokia. Put at least a 3.7″ on there, and dump that 640×360 resolution for 854×480.

  • therohan

i highly doubt that the n98 is gonna be so ugly.. It looks more like a sony ericson really… I was expecting for the n98 to look like the n97 without the keyboard and half in thickness. And im pretty sure i read somewhere that nokia are releasing a phone with a snapdragon. Could this be it? Mark part of hemorrhoids treatment team.

I’m sure we all know the Nokia N8 is out and has been for awhile now.

The new C6 looks like enough for most but the temptation to get the ‘best’ always lingers.

  • http://www.pembrokemayball.com Russ Thompson

The N8 still can’t compare with the iPad – but then that’s a whole nuther market I guess.

  • http://sacalatarjetaroja.com Gary Musser

I just picked up the E7 Driver edition and I love it. The Querty keyboard is great.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I don’t think you can measure life in terms of years. I think longevity doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with happiness. I mean happiness comes from facing challenges and going out on a limb and taking risks. If you’re not willing to take a risk for something you really care about, you might as well be dead.
