Nokia Symbian^4 UI Preview Videos

Fierce Wireless uploaded a couple of videos from Symbian showing a preview of the Symbian^4 UI. One is for the homescreen and the other for the photos album. They’re not the usual flashy marketing videos, but it gives you an idea of what to expect.

Symbian 4 Photos Symbian 4

From what I see, Symbian^4 looks like a combination of Maemo and Android UI. For example, the exit button on the upper right corner is replaced by a “back” or “previous” button that Android users are familiar with. The photos demo looks nice. I like the scrolling thumbnail below the larger photo.

What’s sad is that it will be a while until we see a Symbian^4 device. According to the Symbian roadmap, S^4 won’t be code complete until Q3 2010 and we won’t see any handsets until the first half of 2011.

Quick one, Nokia doesn't have anything to do with these videos.
They were made by the Symbian Foundation and represent few items of the potential of S^4.
  • Thanks for the clarification!

All this UI stuff doesn't look like anything maemo/meego can't do already with a bit of spit and polish. Makes you wonder the business decision of supporting two open source OS's. Nokia should simply focus on S40 for feature phones and maemo/meego for high end devices.

Imo it looks pretty nice. No reason why it couldn't beat plain Android look wise.
SF was right decission. They would have been much more hurt in the long rune if they would have kept their mid end for S40. Look at Samsung that will be selling Bada on 250-300 euros phone. It would ahve destroyed Nokia whole mid end in 2 years. Nokia might be hurt now because of the transition to Symbian Foundation, but in a long run it was right decision.
MeeGo can take the spotlight from Symbian in high end like it's meant.
  • looks nice :)
