Hermes for Nokia N900 Updated to 0.8.2 With Find-as-You-Type

Hermes for the Nokia N900 is an awesome tool that fills in your contacts’ missing info and photo with data found from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Gravatar. It was a pain doing it manually for unmatched names, but the new version 0.8.2 now contains find-as-you-type contact matching for faster results.

Hermes is a must-have app for the Nokia N900. I’m glad I had the opportunity to speak with the developer, Andrew Flegg, when the app was still in early development. You can watch that video below if you haven’t seen it yet.

Find-as-you-type contact matching makes it much faster to connect the dots between your unmatched friends and their online profiles. After Hermes does its magic, there might be a few people in your contacts list that remain unmatched. All you need to do in the new version is start typing at the screen with the online profiles. The N900 will try to filter the list for right person, and the user selects which profile matches the contact.

In the example below, I have a contact in my phonebook named Norm. Hermes could not automatically match it with an online profile. I start typing “Norman” and now the list shows 2 possible matches from my Facebook friends list. I click on the right person then click Update.

Now Norm from my contacts list gets a photo, birthday info, and even a webpage link instead of just the telephone number that was initially there.

Hermes is available for download within the Application Manager on the Nokia N900. It is also free.

    Great App.
I desperately need support for Orkut.

I am puzzled. I don't have Hermes and yet I still have the images from my contacts in facebook as the accounts I have in my phone for sharing and IM include facebook, yahoo and Google Talk. The N900 brings the images in and adds them to my contacts so how is Hermes different?

Hermes brings in additional info like birthday and their webpage too. I love that on the Nokia N900 you can merge all this data.

The N900 does that now too. I just checked to make sure I wasn't crazy. I am having a weird issue though with facebook. When I IM chat in facebook through the N900's conversations I am sent a text message of the message I send out to my contact. It only happens with facebook too.

@Johny: Orkut support is on the roadmap for 0. One of the reasons for the delayed release is an enormous refactor to make it easier to support new services.

So, we have LinkedIn and Gravatar now, and Orkut, Plaxo and many others are planned.

Now that “Facebook Chat” is enabled you can get the photo behaviour of Hernes, for Facebook, with that and Contacts Merger.

However, Hermes also does URLs and birthdays and other services like Twitter, LinkedIn and Gravatar. More services – including Plaxo, Hyves, Orkut, Google Contacts and MySpace – are on the roadmap.

Plaxo's very interesting as they expose other useful info like phone number.

What about support for xing.com? It is a big career network like linkedin or experteer. I really would like to see supprt there too.

i read about a google contact support. Actually i use google contactd as my central contact database and sync it with mail for exchange on my n900, but many information is lost like IM informations. Will it be possiblie to sync with your product in future or just pull data. Because sometimes i update contacts on my phone and sometimes on the computer and still want to stay up to date.

txx for the fine program so far

750$ device: problems with supporting MS exchange server 2003 (still most commonly used), no real forum support (maemo developers usually don't reply you, probably busy with meego preparations – I don't blame them), slow and old processor (in the brand's flagship phone), no real GPS navigation – low end Nokia phones got it for free :/, fMMS buggy as hell free-only way to use MMS – an argument that iphone also didn't have it – I don't buy. read the rest (there's a lot of stuff that N900 lacks – for example Nokia's support) here: http://tinypaste.com/36a2e
