The Realme C1 (2019) might be the entry-level phone of your entry-level dreams

If you’re looking for a long-lasting phone that won’t break the bank, your search might be over — Realme announced the Realme C1 (2019), the company’s latest entry-level smartphone.

On the outside, the Realme C1 (2019) features a 6.2-inch display with HD+ (1,520 x 720) resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio. There’s no fingerprint sensor, but the front-facing 5-megapixel camera supports facial recognition. The software identifies 128 facial points to unlock the phone in 0.3 seconds.

Around back are dual 13 and 2MP cameras that support beauty and portrait modes.

Under the hood, the Realme C1 (2019) features Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 450 processor, either 2 or 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable storage. The phone runs ColorOS 5.1, which is based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

The real head-turner is with the huge 4,230mAh battery. Thanks to the large battery, low-end processor, and undemanding specs, the Realme C1 (2019) lets you make calls for 44 hours, listen to music for 18 hours, and browse websites for 18 hours.

The software further extends the battery life by restricting apps in the background and cutting off apps randomly waking up in the background. With the features enabled, the phone saves anywhere between five and 11 percent of power.

The Realme C1 (2019) will be available starting February 5 in India. Residents can pick up the phone in either Navy Blue or Mirror Black through Flipkart. The 2GB/32GB variant will sell for 7,499 rupees (~$106), while the 3GB/32GB version will sell for 8,499 rupees (~$120).

Realme U1 announced: Helio P70 chipset, 25MP selfie camera for $170

The Realme U1. Realme

  • Realme has announced the Realme U1 smartphone, packing a 25MP selfie camera.
  • The phone is also equipped with a Helio P70 chip, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of storage.
  • The Realme U1 starts at ~$170, and goes on sale from December 5.

Realme revealed the existence of the Realme U1 earlier this month, promising a mid-range device with top-notch selfie credentials. The company held the official launch event in India today, revealing all there is to know about the device.

The Realme U1’s key selling point is the selfie camera, packing a 25MP f/2.0 front snapper (IMX576) akin to the Oppo F9. The selfie camera is also equipped with four-in-one pixel binning, real-time beautification/bokeh/HDR previews, multi-frame noise reduction, and night shot functionality. Realme claims the selfie camera is also capable of recognizing 296 identification points to serve up to eight million personalized beauty solutions.

Switch to the back and you’ve got a 13MP+2MP camera pairing (f/2.2 and f/2.4 respectively), as you’d expect from a mid-range phone in 2018. The cameras are capable of bokeh effects, AI scene detection, and portrait lighting (natural, film, mono, rim, and bi-color options). The phone also supports 90fps slow-motion video recording (not a typo, by the way), which is a long way off 120fps and 240fps slow-mo seen in rival handsets.

As for the key specs, Realme previously confirmed that the phone would pack the Helio P70 chipset. We’ve also got a 6.3-inch full HD+ screen with a waterdrop notch, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage, a 3,500mAh battery, rear fingerprint scanner, and AI Face Unlock functionality.

Unfortunately the phone is using microUSB rather than USB Type-C, as well as Bluetooth 4.2 instead of Bluetooth 5. Additionally, you can expect ColorOS 5.2 based on Android 8.1, rather than a taste of Android Pie. At least the company has retained the headphone jack.

The smartphone will be available from December 5 on Amazon India, starting at 11,999 rupees (~$170) for the 3GB/32GB model, and 14,499 rupees (~$205) for the 4GB/64GB variant. The device will be available in blue, gold and black color schemes.

Realme U1 teased with ‘most powerful selfie camera ever’

The Realme U1 teaser. Amazon India

  • Realme and Amazon India have teased the Realme U1, a selfie-focused smartphone.
  • Oppo’s sub-brand claims the new phone will also have “the most powerful selfie camera ever.”
  • The device will have a Helio P70 chipset and waterdrop notch, according to the teaser.

The Realme series might be the breakout brand of the year, delivering a family of affordable phones. We’ve seen quite a few entries this year already, but it looks like the Oppo sub-brand isn’t done just yet.

The Realme Twitter account, in conjunction with Amazon India, has teased the arrival of the Realme U1. And Realme says the new phone will be the first device with MediaTek‘s Helio P70 chipset.

MediaTek’s latest processor is essentially a minor upgrade over the Helio P60, featuring slightly higher CPU and GPU clock speeds, for one. Nevertheless, the Helio P60 was a pretty capable mid-range chipset that offered AI silicon too, so an incremental improvement isn’t a bad thing.

The Realme U1 teaser also reveals the phone will have a waterdrop notch, which will play host to “the most powerful selfie camera ever.” Does this mean it’ll be the highest resolution selfie camera or that it’ll simply take the best selfies? I’m leaning towards the former, as Realme parent company Oppo has been touting a 25MP AI-powered selfie camera this year. Hopefully Realme puts the megapixels to good use if it indeed takes this route.

We don’t know much else about the new smartphone but, if it’s like previous Realme devices, we’d expect a few compromises of some kind. After all, the Realme 1 offered powerful internals and a full HD+ screen, but lacked a fingerprint scanner. The Realme 2, on the other hand, delivered a fingerprint scanner but served up a 720p display and weaker, Snapdragon 450 chipset.

We won’t have to wait too long for a full reveal, as Realme will host a November 28 launch event in India at 12:30PM (2AM ET). What would you like to see from the Realme U1? Give us your thoughts in the comments section!
