Nokia 8 Sirocco gets its hands on the September security patch

Did Nokia pull the trigger for all phones together? After Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 7, it is time for Nokia 8 Sirocco to receive the new update. All happening today, 12th of September! As with the other phones, the update only packs the Google’s Android security patch for the month of September. Nokia is certainly at an unbeatable position when it comes to the pace of releasing software updates!

September update for Sirocco

The update weighs just 82.1MB, which means that the installation process won’t take long. So, if you are one Sirocco user, then go ahead and manually check for updates if you haven’t received a notification yet. Also do let us know if you see any visible changes in the device’s UI.

Nokia 7 Plus receives a stability update, probably a preparation for Pie

Nokia 7 Plus users are reporting a new update hitting their devices. No, it is not the highly anticipated Android Pie update. It is not the September security patch either. The change-log only mentions 3 things:

  1. Improved system stability
  2. User interface enhancements
  3. Google security patch 2018-08

Stability update for Nokia 7 Plus

The August security patches were already rolled out to the Nokia 7 Plus and that tells us that the change-log is not so accurate. The update weighs 76.7MB and going by the remarks from the change-log, it fixes some minor issues with the device. This update could also be seen as the stage that bridges the upgrade to Android Pie (which should be rolling out soon).

Do let us know if you notice something new after installing the update on your devices.

Thanks you, Michael for the tip.

Updated: Nokia 6.1 Plus gets August update in India; Adds stability, but removes the ability to hide the notch

Nokia Mobile is pushing the first main software update to the recently launched Nokia 6.1 Plus. Users in India are reporting (at Nokia community) the arrival of a 380MB software update which mentions just two things in the change-log: 1. Improved system stability & 2. Update Google security patch 2018-08. The update is likely kicked off yesterday i.e. 1st of September but it is also possible that the update was already pushed and the users have just now started receiving the deliveries of the phone.

It’s just the start of September and the August update is pretty late. Anyhow, better late than never. Hopefully the September update will arrive faster. If the update is coming from the collected feedback, it should also be addressing the little camera lag and add some improvements to the ambient light sensor.

I’m yet to hear positive sides of the update from the Nokia 6.1 Plus users. However, complaints are flowing in from the users who do not like the “notch”. Apparently, the update removed the software setting (status bar style) to hide the notch. This won’t affect many who are happy (I’m assuming they are) with the notch, but some who do not like it are definitely speaking out now.

Update: Laura, the moderator at Nokia Community said (via Nokia Community) that the removal of notch hide option is per the requirement set by Google. No idea why would Google have such a requirement, but if that’s true, it is very alarming as we cannot expect even basic level of customization in our Nokia phones.

Update 2: Juho Sarvikas tweeted that the option to hide the notch (status bar style) will be re-introduced on the Nokia 6.1 Plus. Probably in a future software release and that would likely be September security patch. However, unless that happens, it’s just words.

Other than that, another Google app has been forcefully pushed to the device. This time it is Files Go, which replaces the previous simple file manager called “files”. Files Go is a nice app which can help clear unwanted images from the device, but I have some problems with the way Google forces its apps. Files Go is not a replacement to a proper file manager.

Another thing I feel is that the change-log should reflect most visual changes which are made to the OS. Hiding everything behind a security or stability tag is a weird scenario since the users do not get to know what exactly is expected to change with the update. Nokia Mobile should try to keep the change-log more clear.

Nokia 7 is the next to receive August 2018 Android security update

The China exclusive Nokia 7 is now receiving an OTA update which brings the Android security patches for August 2018. The update is tiny, weighing only 97MB and updates the security patch to August 2018. There’s nothing else mentioned in the change-log. The post update software version is 224F.B01.

Nokia 7 August Security update

The Nokia 7 is not an Android One certified device. It is also not among the Nokia phones which run vanilla Android. The China ROM has a number of enhancements and that doesn’t stop Nokia from regularly updating the phones in China. This is Nokia’s indirect answer to the people who feel that adding customization to Android code results in slower updates. It is more about the willingness and dedication.

If you are using a Nokia 7 in China or outside of China, then you can head to device settings to manually check for updates.

Nokia 5 & Nokia 6 start receiving security patch update for August 2018

Nokia Mobile is back to its monthly dose of Android security updates. After delivering it to the Nokia X6 in China, Nokia is pushing the August 2018 Android security release to the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) devices globally.

Nokia 5 August Security update
Nokia 6 August Security Update

As we have learnt in the past months, the August security update for Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 is also very minimal. It weighs 148.3MB and 141.9MB (respectively) and mentions only the security release in the change-log. If you have a Nokia 5 or 6 in hand which has not yet shown the update notification, then it will be a good idea to manually check for updates in the Settings app.

Thank you, Shubham for the tip about Nokia 5.

Nokia 7 plus gets Android P DP4 update; Stable Pie release is potential fake news

Nokia Mobile has pushed the last developer preview release of Android P (Pie) to the Nokia 7 plus users. If you are already enrolled to the beta program, then you will receive the update notification shortly. If you have used the manual way to update, then you can download the new image and sideload on your Nokia 7 plus.

The new developer preview image brings the Android P DP4 with version V3.150. The security patch is still at July. Juho Sarvikas confirmed the release on Twitter.

Do note that if you upgrade via OTA then your user data will be automatically wiped, even if you are already running Android P DP3. There’s another warning to not switch the way you receive Android P DP updates.

Nokia 7 Plus Android P DP4 update

The stable release should be around the corner. However, it will still take some-time to perfect. So, I expect stable Android Pie releasing to Nokia 7 plus users towards the end of August, along with the August security patch. For now, the news of a potential Android Pie update being rolled to users in India is untrue. So, do not blame your device/operator if you do not get the update.

Nokia 8 Sirocco & Nokia 7 receive July security updates

Nokia Mobile’s promise to deliver regular security updates is here to stay. They have just started pushing the July security patches to the Nokia 8 Sirocco and also to the Nokia 7 which is not an Android One device.

Both devices are receiving updates lesser than 100MB in size and offer only the Android security release. You should receive an update notification, however, if you don’t, you can always perform a manual check.

As with the latest Android, the updates do install without requiring the phone to be shut down. You will only need to restart it after everything is done. So, that is just about 2 minutes of downtime for the security release which might fix some severe bugs.

Nokia 5 gets a system stability update in India & other countries

Nokia 5 is receiving a new update in India, which may also be available in other markets. The update brings some unexplained fixes to improve system stability. There is also a mention of user interface enhancements, whatever that means.

The update is bigger than the tiny monthly updates which Nokia pushes. The download size is 434.4MB, suggesting that there’s quite some code that will be updated/replaced. The Nokia 5 has already received the July security update. Hopefully this new update further improves the user experience on Nokia 5.

If you are in India and haven’t received the update, then you can do a manual check from the settings app. We’d like to know if the update is also available in other regions. So, do leave a comment if that is the case.

Update: The update is also available in Czech Republic and several other countries. So, seems like a global release.

Android P DP3 starts rolling to the Nokia 7 plus (OTA available too)

Nokia Mobile has started the rollout of Android P DP3 (beta 3) build to the Nokia 7 plus users. Nokia 7 plus is the only Nokia device participating in the Android P preview and it is good to see Nokia Mobile offering the latest builds (although they are a little slow about it).

The new build bumps the version to V3.110 from the V2.13B in the beta 2. Another good thing is that starting this time, Nokia Mobile is also offering the update via OTA. So, if you are already on DP2 (beta 2), then you can simply check for updates in the settings to receive it, hence saving yourself from downloading the package and sideloading via ADB.

The full package is B2N-3110-0-00WW-B03-update and can be downloaded off Nokia Developer website. You can downgrade to Oreo at any point by using the downgrade package which is also available on the Nokia Developer website.

Update: Here’s how the OTA update notification looks like.

Android security release for July 2018 now rolling to Nokia 8

Nokia Mobile has also started the rollout of July security patch to Nokia 8. The Nokia 7 plus also started receiving it today. So, it seems like a appy Thursday so far. The update is 79.1MB which should only take fractions to download and install.

Nokia 8 July security releaseThe security patches help your Nokia phone stay secure against recently discovered security issues. You should ideally install these patches immediately, but given that the May update brought some networking issues, you should wait for user reviews before installing it on  a business machine.

As always, the rollout is dependent on your region and carrier. So, it may not be immediately available in all regions. You can head to the settings on your Nokia 8 to do a manual check for software updates.

Thank you Baiju for the tip!
