Video How To: Calibrate Nokia N97 Compass in Seconds
July 20th, 2009 • Mark Guim • Filed Under •
Compass calibration on the Nokia N97 is a lot faster now. When I first got the Nokia N97, I complained about how long it takes the Nokia N97 to calibrate the compass. A video from Symbian World showed they did it in 3 seconds, but I was unable to reproduce the same result just by flicking my wrist. The trick was to turn off the auto-rotate sensor too. Watch how I did it.
You can also watch this video in HD on YouTube.
In this video, the Nokia N97 is sporting the Nokia Maps version 3.1 which showed up in Sofware Update on July 15th, 2009 at select regions.

wow, that is one hell of a lag for rotation.
julian22 on 20 July 2009:
But then your phone won't auto-rotate if you turn off the setting?
That's not worth it then if you ask me. I like using my phone in landscape mode.

ur welcome!
Mark Guim on 21 July 2009:
It's not that bad. Just slide it open for landscape view.

Hmm, it works for me just fine with auto-rotate left switched on (I always have it on and I'm not going to bother switching it off every time I use maps). I flicked the phone just like in the video and it worked straight away.
Thanks for this video anyway, I spent ages trying to get my compass to calibrate before this; the instructions in the user guide are terrible!

Hi Mark,
Never had an issue with the compass….always did the “wave a flag” method…only just using my wrist and not the entire arm.
Hint: Open maps, lock the keypad, do the wrist movement, unlock keylock and presto! compass callibrated!
no need to turn off autorotate……
Mark Guim on 22 July 2009:
just tried the keylock. Works! Thanks for the tip
