App Review: Opera Mobile 10 beta on Nokia N97

Opera Mobile 10 beta just came out for Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition devices. I installed it on the Nokia N97 right away and shot it on video to show you how it looks. It’s a nice alternate browser, but prepare for occasional headaches because it’s still in beta.

It is very similar to Opera Mini 5 which I demoed previously. This version is optimized for Symbian meaning faster rendering, zooming, panning and almost everything else you do with a browser. Page downloading is now 50% faster than the previous version.

It’s still Beta
Sounds too good, right? I encountered some problems while using Opera Mobile. Clicking on links sometimes do not get recognized and I often get ‘Out of Memory’ messages when I have multiple tabs open or scrolling down a page.

  • Opera’s crap isn’t even close to what is available in other browsers. What they offer are the same thing you could put together yourself as a simple HTML file that you set as your default homepage.
  • Thanks for the good video review. It looks really awesome - I love how Opera is doing some great work. I was an early adopter of Opera... back before Firefox and of course back when Opera actually asked for money (or it would show ads). It's great to see they are still a very innovative company... it's also great to see a wicked browser on a Nokia.

    That "memory full" stuff is due to the low free RAM avaible on the N97, the N900 and samgsung omnia HD have 256 mb of RAM; while the N97 still has 128 MB :S and I don't know how much free RAM it has, my old N95 8GB had 90 MB of free RAM :S :S :S

    ‘Out of Memory' - I had this issue with something else on the phone and the solution was basically changing the storage location from Phone Memory to Mass Memory or Sim Memory (the two latter have more memory).

    Mark can you tell us the difference between Opera Mobile 10 Beta and Opera Mini 5 Beta?
  • Opera Mini is java-based while Opera Mobile is optimized for Symbian. But all you really need to know is that Opera Mobile is faster than Opera Mini.
